I want to share my experiences because many of us are on a budget but a little timid about refurbished goods.
I'd never bought a refurbished laptop before but decided to test it out with a refurbished Z890.
I paid about $1500.The specs - 3.06 GHz, 500 gig, 7200 rpm HDD, Blu-Ray read/write, large capacity battery.....
I am about to order a new VGN-Z890 CTO but I was thinking on ordering a default 250GB HDD and 4 GB of memory to later upgrade it to a SSD disk and 8 GB of RAM.
My questions are,
Does this laptop support installing this SSD drive?: Intel X25-M Mainstream SSDSA2MH160G2C1 2.5" 160GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid state disk (SSD) - OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820167017

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy brand new Z 890 series came directly from Sonystyle with Win 7 Ultimate installed and lots of additional 'junk' software that I don't want. This is not the fresh start veresion. Since the recovery discs that I made does not allow for a clean install, I figure I'll just have to UNINSTALL as much stuff that I don't need as possible.
Is there a post or guide somewhere as to all the stuff that I can safely uninstall using Windows Uninstall program? (It does have Bluray so I need to keep whatever is necessary for that.)
I want to take out all the demo software such as Office 2007 trial, Norton trial etc but thought I'd ask if there are more that I can uninstall safely.
I wanted to post the review of the VGN-Z890, but I cannot seem to put it in the review section, or maybe I am not suppose to? >< If that is the case feel free to delete this post moderators...

Operating System Used in Review: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit Edition
Pros: High quality construction. Attractive, Successful Patented Hybrid Graphics System (requires no reboot), lightweight and slim design. DDR3 Memory, great battery life, HDMI Connectivity with Audio Transmission, Windows 7, Very Portable.
Cons: Same outdated video card as previous VGN-Z790 model, highly priced. Lots of bloatware, slightly fragile design, quiet speakers.....................
How complicated is it to upgrade to a P9700 CPU[ 2.8 GHx with 6MB L2 Cache) on a Z-VGN 890.
Is it the same motherboard or a totally different motherboard. My Laptop currently has a P8800 [ 2.66 GHz 3MB L2 cache)
So the white list of cards the DV7 will allow in the mini PCI-e slots pisses me off (in a MASSIVE way)
If we could find a way around or just get a new bios would any of you fellow owners be interested? Possibly make a way to use a SSD drive as a boot device on these laptops.
So I'm looking to buy a notebook, and I like my girlfriend's 2 year old Vaio. I was wondering what options I would have with Sony.
My budget is $700-900ish and I need 15" screen or larger, it also needs to play Sims 3/Team Fortress 2 on high settings. Prefer an i3 CPU or better
I'm in the UK - what is the difference between the VPCF11Z1E/BI and VPCF11X5E? The first one is available on the Sony UK site, and the second the Sony Style site. If I spec up the X5E to the same spec, it's £70 cheaper!
i.e. - i7 720QM, 8GB RAM, 500GB Hard Disk
A few questions though:
I really want the best screen possible. Do these both have it? Is it Adobe RGB?
I need 8GB of RAM - is it cheaper to get it with 4GB and buy the extra 4GB seperately?
Is a 128GB SSD worth the £120 extra over the standard 500gb 7200rpm disk (currently included free)? Is the SSD that Sony include any good, or should I buy a 128GB or 256GB one seperately? Do they have a limited life span?
Finally - is it full of bloatware? Will I need to flatten it and reinstall Windows to get it running well, or is the VAIO stuff worth having? Are the disks for Windows 7 supplied, and are the drivers easy to find?
I'm considering buying the Sony Vaio Z online at Amazon or Ebay. New.
If the seller has like 1000+
positive reps and is like a star-seller. Would you consider the purchase safe? I'm a newbie when it comes to amazon/ebay
Thinking of buying a Vaio X from Conics for use in the UK. Anybody who has experience with this? They seem to ship it with an English Windows 7 version, keyboard in their base model is Japanese international however.
Still a good deal it seems at 760GBP+shipping for the Z540 with 64gb SSD.

I was trying to configure a very powerful system (Precision) but didn't want the crappy widescreen monitor, need ultrasharp as it's for graphics work, but there is no option to deselect or select ultrasharp.
Another annoyance was that for some reason it wouldn't let me select a second drive - no incompatibilty message, nothing.
I'm thinking of buying the SXPS 16 from Dell Hong Kong as my bro lives there and he should be able to bring it down within the next two months. Unfortunately the only screen available is:

Does anyone know the exact resolution of this. I've heard amazing things about the screen but I think this is has less resolution and not RGB?

I'm interested in buying a good portable notebook and the E4300 is one of the main contenders because of the solid build, good batterly life and its weight and size
So I've been reading many mixed reviews about the latitude e4300 where many people thought it didn't live up to what you would expect from a premium business notebook with a premium price.
So I have been looking into something bigger than a 17' (yes i know im getting greedy as far as size) However Im not sure of the quality, performance and other things and was wondering if you guys could fill in the gaps.
Will be used for
-Light gaming, but i definately want a low 'response time'
-Watching movies
-Browsing internet
My main questions are.
-what is a good 'response time'?
Ive seen 2ms, 5ms as the lowest times and im guessing these times are more than reasonable for playin a few games.
-Will a 7900GS be strong enough to handle displaying a resolution of say 1600x1200 or 1920x1200 and play a game or two w/o any issues?

Dell sent me a nice coupon for dell outlet and I can get a refurb dell mini 9 with the following specs for $191. Kind of an impulse buy if I get it but i've been wanting a netbook for a while.
Specs: Inspiron Mini 910
Intel Atom 1.6
1 GB ram
8 GB solid state drive.
Ubuntu loaded .....
So I see lots of refurb'd Studio XPS 16s on ebay at very competitive prices (like a couple of hundred $ off dell.com).
The ones I am looking at includ warranty transferred to buyer - seller has 100% (or near) feedback.
I want to replace my current hard drive which is 7200rpm 500gb seagate with SSD. Problem is on vista scoring chart there is either lower ranked ones or high ranked ones. obviously i want something higher ranked that my current Hard drive score of 5.9

I had a chat with a agent today and asked, If he can give some discount on my online config ? He was ready to give discount of $50 on $1250 config and $75 on $1394 config ! Is it worth (means should I bargain more with him :-) ) and safe to place the order through the agent ?

Im thinking on buying a Vostro 3300 from the Dell website.
Seems as a good lappy for editing text and watching some videos and movies.
How much ram can I add to it? Im planning on buying it with only 2GB and planning to upgrade it to its max. Which I don't know exactly what is.

The default OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit.

I am intending to buy a Vostro 1320, I will use it for text editing, Internet surfing, occassional photoediting, so I don't have high hardware demands only that computer works smoothly.
There are some things which I dont understand:
1) they offer processors with fsb 800 Mhz and fsb 1066 Mhz, but the RAM memory works on 800 Mhz
I am prepared to pay for little bit better processor but do I have advantage of better CPU when I have slower Ram ?
2) they have also half-height and full-height wireless card,
is it some particular advantage with half-height ?
3) is it worth to buy 256 MB Nvidia instead of onboard Intel X4500MHD graphics card, and as I said my demands on graphics are not so high ?
Some guy is selling an E6400 for $750 with 3 year warranty left. It's $300 cheaper than a simliar configuration brand new.
What things should I check for? this will be my first laptop. Of course i'll check to make sure all the parts work, test everything out.
anyway to test if there are overheating issues? build quality issues? can i see if the seller exchanged any parts?
He says he has a service # that i can check with Dell, not sure what this is though.
Is the GPU meltdown inevitable? Would i be able to avoid this ever happening with the copper mod? It would be for music and multimedia so the cooling set up i read about here sounds like it would handicap the laptop too much.
