Sony :: Free Windows 7 Upgrade For Z590 Owners
Sep 2, 2009I'm trying to determine if owners of Z590s that were purchased after the win7 upgrade start date (6/26) have been able to register for Sony's upgrade program.

View 6 RepliesI bought the FW460J/T with $50 mail in rebate, and I also get a free upgrade to Windows 7 from Sony. I have a few questions regarding the Windows 7 upgrade:
1. Do I have to mail in the UPC bar code? If yes, it might be impossible because I have to send the UPC bar code along with the $50 mail in rebate.
2. Should I buy the full version of Windows 7 for a fresh clean install even though I get a free copy of the upgrade version of Windows 7?
Are the components that come in a 2.26 ghz motherboard compatible with a 2.53 or 2.66 or higher ghz processor? I plan on ordering a Z590 as I fear the 690 will end up starting at a higher base price (ie like in Canada), and then upgrading it with a faster processor, more ram, etc. I just want to make sure I can do all of those things without issue.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI am considering the Dell Vostro 1520 as a laptop but I am confused about the windows upgrade option (I would get Vista Home Premium to be able to get it as a start). Here's a link to the page:
http://www.dell.com/us/en/business/n...20&s=bsd&cs=04
I was under the initial impression that any dell laptop sold in the few months before Win 7 released would be eligible for the free upgrade.
But when I look in the lineup there's one that says "Windows 7 ready" for an extra $140?? Is that the only one that gets the free upgrade? It's not really free then and why not just buy it separately?
I just made my weekly call to Mentor Media and this is the first time someone spent enough time to tell me something potentially encouraging about my Windows 7 upgrade. She indicated that this week they finally (her word) have given them some information when things would ship. She said my order would ship within 3-5 business days – maybe before – and encouraged me to call back Friday for an update. She said that e-mails typically go out 24-48 hours after it has actually shipped, and to not necessarily expect the web site status to change. Somehow I sensed she maybe knew something concrete this time instead of just having to say that they didn’t know.
I’m cautiously optimistic.
I already bought a new upgrade license for Windows 7 and was about ready to install it on my Acer, but hearing this am going to hold off a bit longer in hopes that I can save it to use on my older Vista desktop. Hope I’m not hung out to dry again being suckered into waiting just a bit longer …
Has anyone that has received their upgrade kit found that it does a BIOS upgrade? The BIOS on my Acer M1202 is SLIC 2.0 compliant and presumably won’t allow any OEM activation key to work on it until it’s 2.1 compliant. Just curious how they are doing this.
Does anyone else have a problem registering for the free upgrade to windows 7. Whenever I try to validate my service tag it says I should wait 10 days because my order might not be in the system. I order my E6400 early mid July. And it also says my system isn't eligible when it is.
I've chatted with a Dell person online and he was no help. He just gave me a number to call. I called that number and I had to talk to a lady with an Indian accent that didn't understand what I was saying. And I got transfer a couple times until some guy gave me a number to call, but I couldn't because they were closed or something. Now I call that number and they give me another number to call. Everyone keeps saying "I am not trained to handle this issue."
I am receiving a replacement laptop soon. I have not received it, but I have a couple of questions. It has the 1 gb ATI gfx card.. 4670 i think?? Now from what I understand, this is relatively new. On dell's website it says any laptops ordered between june 26th and december 31st qualify.
View 10 Replies View Relatedafter seeing that Sony had updated it's drivers page with Windows 7 drivers, I decided to take the plunge and install Windows 7 on my VGN-Z590.
Everything worked out fine, and seamlessly (well, except video, that one got a little weird for a bit, but I eventually figured that out), except for one thing.
I have a Sony SRS-BTM30 Bluetooth speaker. This used to work just fine with my VGN-Z590, when I was running Vista on it, but now that I've installed Windows 7, it refuses to connect.
I can pair it just fine, it shows up amongst my bluetooth devices, but unlike previously, it does not show up in the list of "Playback Devices" (in the Windows 7 mixer/audio controls), and if I go to Audio tab of the Windows 7 Bluetooth Settings, it shows up in the list of devices, but if I select it and click on Connect, it will flash "Connecting" for a second, then return to its previous "Disconnected" state without connecting.
So, I was wondering if anyone else had any similar experiences with their Bluetooth gear.
Also I am wondering what Bluetooth driver you guys (people who have upgraded their Zs to Windows 7) are using? I noticed that there are no Bluetooth drivers listed in the Sony eSupport site for the VGN-Z590's Windows 7 drivers. I tried, uninstalling the Bluetooth drivers that came along from my previous OS (Vista) install, during the Windows 7 upgrade process and tried reinstalling the Windows Vista Broadcom drivers for the VGN-Z590, but that didn't seem to make a difference.
Got Display working great. Used Euro drivers. However
Flag says power management driver not installed- Sony programmable i/o driver
and i cannot get the protector suite to work, it installs but states i need to plug in fingerprint reader into usb port.
I attempted to upgrade my Win 8.1 ENVY DV7-7230US laptop to Win 8.1 via the App store. It said I had to clear all the updates first. So I went the System Updates Screen. When I clicked on it to see what updates were needed. The circling wait symbol appeared and never went away. I can not do any system updates, thus I can not download and install the FREE Win8.1 upgrade.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently updated my bios and decided to do a new full install of Windows 7. (Previously running Windows 7 Beta).
After doing a clean install and installing the Sony Notebook Utilities. I started getting this pop up message.
"The installed battery may not be properly connected to the computer or may not be compatible with the computer.
Click OK to enter Hibernate Mode, and remove reinsert the battery
See the electronic VIOA(R) User guide for more information about using the battery"
At first I thought this was an issue with Windows 7 - so after searching the forums and no results I figured I would revert back to Vista. Now I am getting the same error.
I also have two Sony Notebook batteries here - both bought direct from Sony. One extended and one standard - both give same error message.
Could this be a BIOS issue? Is there a way to revert to an older bios?
I should be getting my upgrade (Pro 64) within the next week and was wondering which method is better. I obviously know that it will run a bit faster for the first month or so with clean install, however, my concern is with the activation of the dell free upgrade version. Will it simply be boot the free upgrade disk and install and it will be activated fine? Or, is there more to it? Also, say a year from now I wanted reformat/reinstall win 7... How would I go about doing that with the dell free upgrade DVD?
View 10 Replies View RelatedHas anyone had any luck getting dell to upgrade anything because of shipping delay? Or offer discounts?
Specifically, I am thinking about trying to convince them to upgrade my warranty. I ordered a studio 17. the basic warranty is 1 year limited warranty with 1 year return to depot service. This is included in the base price. When I placed my order i upgraded (for $198 CND) to the 2 year limited warranty, with 2 year return to depot service, lojack+ accidental damage service.
I have been given the usual order delayed bullcrap like most of you. But is it possible to use this to get them to upgrade it to the 2 year NBD onsite service, lojack, and accidental? ($80 value over my original 2 year return to depot)
I am going to give it a shot this week when I can manage to find the time to sit on hold for a few hours. I will let you know what comes of it.
Anyone try anything similar? share your results
I ordered a Macbook Pro (and no, I don't really care that the 17" came out now, it'd have been too hulking for me to carry around anyway) the day after Christmas and received it last Wednesday, the 31st of December 2008.
I see that Apple just released iLife '09. To be honest, I'd feel kinda ripped of if I had to pay for a new version so soon... do you think there would be any way for me to get an upgrade to iLife '09 for free?
I bought an HDX16t on Saturday and got the default DVD drive w/out blu-ray support because the blu-ray was $50 more and I don't think I'd use it that much. With that said, I'd definitely like to have a blu-ray drive if it was free. So this morning I looked and the upgrade is now free.
It's probably unlikely, but would HP allow me to add the blu-ray drive to my order? Has anyone had success getting HP to do something like this? I placed the order on the 7th and it's estimated to be built by the 16th.
I was just wondering about a couple of things since people started getting the free upgrade disks for Windows 7.
1. Can you use the media to perform clean install?
2. If not can you use the Key with another Media? Retail or OEM?
3. How will the activation process fall into place?
I know some tweaking will have to be involved to get it to work.
I got my upgrade kit for one of the laptops I have already but I haven't had time at all to play with them.
Not sure who moved my post to "price check", but if I wanted it there I would have put it there as I am looking for opinions from Sony users and owners who frequent this specific thread and possibly not the price check thread. Thanks
I am preparing to sell my Z590, it has 4GB of RAM, original Sony restore disks, 320GB 7200 RPM HD and I believe a 2.4Ghz P8600 processor, slimline ac adapter and the Sony high resolution screen.
Is there no wireless N just bought a linksys n router and could have sworn the Z590 had wireless N. I want to use it for streaming on my network

I just got a CTO Z590 2.4 GHZ, 3 GB ram, Vista Business "Fresh Start". I'm getting a feel for its performance.
When I attempt to play a HD video with my from within IE, Chrome, Firefox, or quicktime at full screen the video is choppy, less than 10fps. I've got the newest versions of webbrowers, flash, and quicktime.

I've let the videos buffer so internet connection isn't an issue, and I'm in "speed" mode.
I'm upgrading from 6 year old 1.4Ghz Athlon, so I had expected the Z590 wouldn't have a problem, am I expecting too much?
Do others have an issue with these videos?
Should I make use of my XP downgrade disk?
What's the difference among these three?
I configure(CTO) the same spec (color, CPU, Harddrive and so on) for all these three. But the prices are a little bit different. They have same graphic card 256MB too. Does anyone know about the difference?
Another question is... Are Sony SR series good? I configure them as Z series, the only difference is DDR2(SR) and DDR3(Z) and SR even has 512 graphic memory.
I didn't make the disks when I first bought the computer (not sure why not) but I want to make disks for just in case I need to reformat in the future. What are the steps I need to take to do so? I am using Windows Vista Business.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI ordered the 14z about a week ago and I dont remember them offering a free Windows 7 update. I guess I assumed it was included. I went to the website a few minutes ago and I see that its in red as an offer.
Do you think if I call Dell and tell them I want the upgrade or I will just cancel my order and reorder they will give it to me? Its seems silly for them to stop production of my laptop just for a free O.S. upgrade.
