Sony :: Laptops That Are Dockable
Nov 10, 2009
I currently work work with an HP laptop that connects to a docking station. I have used several Dell machines that work this way as well. I would like to find a Sony laptop that has a dedicated video card (256Mb to 512MB) that I can connect to two monitors via docking station at home.
Ive done some searching and cant seem to find what models have docking capabilities and which don't.

so it looks like the SR has been discontinued and there is a Best Buy exclusive called the S. Is the S or another similar model going to be available through the Sony site and if so when? I called them in January and they said the S would be available shortly but I've only seen it through best buy. I ask because I'd like to custom order the specs through sony and also get a different color.

I would hope that Sony will consider a refresh with both the new Core I7 mobile cpu and a higher end video card. The competition is already lining up with just these items.

I recently purchased a Sony SR590, and while I love it, I'm personally VERY susceptible to fan noise.. thus I find problems with being able to hear the fan run constantly. The fan seems to turn on, as soon as I open skype and windows media player...
I recently discovered Sony's 'silent mode' function.. and it seems to cut the fan noise level down. What's the difference between performance mode and silent mode? Do you suppose it's alright for me to keep on silent mode, for my state of sanity (literally)?
From time to time, I run Lightroom CS2, which seems to be my most CPU intensive program... otherwise I usually just have a few internet tabs open, windows media player, and a few chat windows.

Sony VAIO product manager, Xavier Lauwaert, addressed the issue on the Windows Partner blog. His post [answers] to a specific comment about the lack of VT capability provides an astonishing explanation and fix roadmap:
It's great that Sony are "looking forward to leveraging [Windows 7] on their platforms." However some of their recent laptops are unable to leverage all the features of Windows 7.
Sony's decision to disable Virtualization Technology on the Intel chips on their high-end notebooks makes little sense when you consider that these machines are targeted at business consumers. It was also annoying to find this out _after_ I had bought the machine, since none of the pre-sales literature mentioned it.
Even more so when you realise that Windows 7 will include a virtual Windows XP installation to provide backwards compatibility. This will run with impaired performance on any Sony laptop where VT has been disabled. I would be interested to know what the Windows 7 team think about Sony crippling their customer’s ability to use their carefully constructed backwards compatibility feature?..........

Has anyone tried enabling Virtualization on Z series?

I just bought a Targus bag for my Sony Vaio, and one of the features of the bag is a magnetic flap that closes. Inside the bag has pockets where I store my portable harddrive. The magnetic button is right above my harddrive, so I'm a little concerned if this is going to be a problem or not.

Are Sony laptops purchased in Japan compatible with US voltage?
If not, is it possible to buy one that works in America? Also, does anyone know how sales tax in Japan works?

I'm so disgusted with Dell. I bought one of the Vostro 15" laptops when they first came out. Less than 2 years later the motherboard goes out. Last Christmas (2008), I bought my daughter a 13" XPS. It cost me about $1,000. 16 months later the mother board goes out on it and Dell wants $400 to fix it. Either I have the worst luck in the world when it comes to laptops or there is a problem with Dell's QC. My brother bought a cheap Toshiba 5 years ago and it still works fine. I'm not sure what to do about my daughter's laptop. Is it worth $400 to fix it?

Has anyone else had duplicate laptops for one order sent?
Now, this is the story. My old Inspirion died so I decided to buy a new one, 1525. I ordered it on the 12 February and was told it would be delivered by the 28 February.
On the 17th I am sent an email saying parts to my laptop aren't available - minor parts, the colour I wanted and the free bag colour. I check the online status and it has gone from Shipped from Factory to cancelled on the 19th.
I call Dell to ask why they cancelled my order without telling me, they tell me someone will call me back. No one does.
I get an email on 23rd February saying that my laptop has been upgraded due to parts not being available, 250GB hard drive from 160, Windows Office (never ordered it!), red instead of brown and it will be manufactored asap. A new order number is generated and everything.
On the 24th, my original laptop order is delivered to my work. With both the laptop colour and bag I ordered that apparenetly wasn't available.
On the 28th, I get an email saying the 2nd laptop is shipped. I am away so can't call them so I email them requesting they do not send it. However this second laptop was delivered on 2 March. I call Dell, they don't believe me and according to them the 1st laptop does not exist. They say they will call me back. They don't. However on 4 March, courier calls me to organise a date for the pickup.
I receive an email that day when I get home with a third order, I look at the order status, its the same as the second laptop. I get an email today, the 6th, saying its shipped from the factory.
Everyone I've talked to at Dell do not think my first laptop exists and I can't understand why they are sending me this third one. I don't know what to do, no one at customer service listens to me. There has been only one charge on my credit card.

What if you sent it back because it was defective? Will they strip the working parts and use it in their next new laptop build, or will it go into their spare parts collection?

I'm curious to hear what experiences you all have had with laptops from Dell Outlet (looking at Latitude D630). Was it a scratch-and-dent, refurbished, previously ordered new, etc.?
I would upgrade to 3-year Pro Support and Warranty and buy additional accessories (docking station, router, etc.).
Is it worth the risk? Will they take it back no questions asked or do I have to pay 15% restocking fee? (Dell was ambiguous about this).

I have an 5920G laptop I want to upgrade some components on it in the future. I was thinking in the meantime, I want to try get as much as I can from the current processor, a T5550 (living tissue over metal endoskeleton)
I'm actually surprised information on how to do this is so scarce. Surely there is a way to overclock this model?
The current cpu temps dont really go past 60c, so I think I'm comfortable even if it raises another 20c or so. But I cant find a single method to alter the clockspeed.
So has anyone done it? Or knows how to go about doing it?
Overclocking the 8600 was a no-brainer, just requiring non mobile drivers, and I've been running it permanently overclocked to I since the day I got the laptop about 2 years ago with no issues.
Its about a 25-30% increase in performance across the board! To be honest I dont see why anyone should be without it. I couldn't stand using it at stock speeds.
A overclocked 8600 just barely made games playable at decent settings even 2 years ago, although thats getting a bit slack now also.

I really can't figure out why I can't overclock my GPU (in sig) while others with the same cards and even the 9200M GS can overclock theirs..so, fellow Acer-mates, are there any of you who have problems overclocking? Or are there any of you who at least had success doing so? Check this post for the details of the problem..
I'm looking into doing a review of the laptop, but not until I really really know my lappy from the inside out.

however, there are some issues with the HP Envy 15 that I still find undesirable. I don't know if I can wait till it gets another refresh, since it was just recently renewed with the i5 processors (and as I gather from these forums, addressed squeaky build issues, monitor problems, touchpad firmware update, etc). Or perhaps I could wait a little longer for the rumored HP Envy 14, which may arrive before an Envy 15 refresh.
Having never been interested in HP computers before until now, I wonder if there is a general predictability to how often HP refreshes their laptops? (like Apple products, which results in purchase guides with timelines, like this: [url]

This is not an "us vs. them" thread, so please, let's not do that. I'm simply curious as to whether there are any other laptops -- save for HP's Envy line, of course -- which have a large trackpad like the MBPs.
Was just thinking of how it's an arguably good idea which just isn't used as often as you'd think. IMO, of course.

notice that many people on dell forums are complaing about a very large delay in shipping certain computers.
I know the XPS laptops are being delayed right now. So Make sure that you know if your model will be affected by the delay.
Mothers computer had been ordered around the 8th of december. orriginally the ship date was before christmas. later that had been extended to the 18th of january and now its nearly into febuary.

This certified refurbished Studio 1745 in dell outlet seems not bad with Core 2 Duo P8700 (2.53GHz)/ 500GB HD (7200 RPM) /4GB SDRAM/ 512MB ATI MHD 4570.
Which is $919, and the final price is $ 781 with the 15% off coupon.

I'm thinking of buying a laptop which is quite powerful and can run Linux (most of my work is in Linux). I'm an engineering student and frequently need to use computationally intensive applications,
which are also graphically intensive. Following a post on another subforum (http://forum.notebookreview.com/show...6#post4548016), I was asked to confirm with Dell users here as to what their Linux experiences are.
I would appreciate inputs and suggestions about purchasing laptops from users of Dell laptops, especially the Latitide and Precision.
I understand that the appropriate subforum for this is different, but since this is now only a matter of deciding which Dell model to purchase

I recently had the pleasure of having a laptop (inspiron 1520) crap out on me after only just two years (i bought it November 2007). I had a laptop cooler and used the laptop for ocassional LAN parties, gaming and also to do my homework until I broke. I know some of you might say it's my fault for not buying the extended warrenty but come on, a $1300 dollar machine should last at least four years with normal care. That's the least I expect from a normal laptop. Is that too much to ask for? Anyway after that whole expierience I'll never get another laptop for gaming again, especially from Dell.
If you are considering buying a laptop for gaming consider other options unless you really need to game on the go.
Flame on Dell lovers and laptop gamers!
