Sony :: Linux In The New Z11
Apr 20, 2010
I have been using Ubuntu Linux as my primary OS for the past two years and although i find Win7 that came with my new Z11 ok, i really want to go back to linux. However after a few google searches (and some more search in this forum) i understand that there are problems with the dual gfx adapters and the fake raid that these beasts come with, which is also locked in the default bios. On top of that, there are worries that the GC scheme of the Samsung drives only works with ntfs (although i am a bit skeptical on that, especially since the raid configuration might block this anyhow). Could someone please provide answers/pointers on any of the above? when i tried to boot the latest ubuntu beta from usb i got a complete messed up display.

Anyone have any luck being able to enable their Nvidia card within Linux? I could care less about trying to switch... But I have spent some serious time trying to do it and unfortunately you cannot just turn off the intel graphics card in the BIOS..

Was going to use the second hard drive for a second OS and since I am waiting on Proper Windows 7 driver support for it was going to try something else out.

What a great forum! Well well, I've been reading a lot about the M6400 and the M4400. I'm still undecided on what to get. A basic M6400 or a well loaded M4400, but that thread is already up right?
My main question is, what would be the best rig for Linux? For what I've been reading almost everyone is getting these computers because they are the best balance in features and quality while they also serve for gaming. That's why I have decided to narrow my search to these 2 specific models anyway.
Even when these computers come with RHEL 5.2 (Am I right?), I'd be opting for CentOS 5.2 64 bits, which is basically the same. Maybe Ubuntu 8.10 or OpenSUSE 11.1 for all my day-to-day needs and Matlab. Gaming is not that important but its a nice plus.
Who has tried one of those on these machines as hosts (not as Virtual Machines)??? From what I've read, the M4400 is ISV certified while the M6400 uses a desktop chipset to achieve its maximum of 16GB of RAM. Which one is the most reliable, stable, compatible machine .....

I'm thinking of buying a laptop which is quite powerful and can run Linux (most of my work is in Linux). I'm an engineering student and frequently need to use computationally intensive applications,
which are also graphically intensive. Following a post on another subforum (http://forum.notebookreview.com/show...6#post4548016), I was asked to confirm with Dell users here as to what their Linux experiences are.
I would appreciate inputs and suggestions about purchasing laptops from users of Dell laptops, especially the Latitide and Precision.
I understand that the appropriate subforum for this is different, but since this is now only a matter of deciding which Dell model to purchase

I spoke to Dell India today and received a quote from them regarding Studio 15...but surprisingly they say that they don't have drivers for XP/Linux...
I know that the laptop comes with Vista Premium but I thought I could always change it later if I wanted to...whats this weird thing about not providing drivers for other OS?
Could someone from India who's got Studio 15 help me out?

I have searched the forum for options on dual booting my xps 1330 with either linux or XP however I cannot seem to find what I am looking for.
Basically, i already have vista installed and I do not want to format that hard drive to install either xp or linux.
I am fully aware of the fact that If i install XP after vista it will mess up my boot record. Is there any way around this?

UPDATED FOR UBUNTU 10.04 LUCID LYNX
Here it comes, updated guide for Lucid.
Packard Bell / Gateway clones:
This guide has also been tested on a Packard Bell Dot M/U with bios v3303, and it should also work on the Gateway clone. If you have a 1410/1810 and something doesn't work, please report back.
What's working after a standard Ubuntu 10.04 install:GraphicsAudio out, speaker mutes when pluging in headphones. Good volume.Networking, both wireless (intel wifi 1000) and wired (the atheros gigabit)FN +:F4, suspends fineF6, monitor goes blackF7, touchpad on / offF8, muteF9, Bloq NumRePag: HomeAvPag: EndUp: increase volumeDown: decrease volumeRigh: increase brightness: skips steps.Left: decrease brightness: skips steps.J,K,L, etc: numeric keyboard ok.What's not working:Audio in: the integrated mic doesn't work.FN + F5: not recognised, doesn't toogle displaysAutomated Install (recommended): I've done a script that should do it all automatically. In detail:
What the script does:Configure gnome-power-manager backlight dim and hard disk power savingDownload, patch, install and setup acerhdfInstall the power saving scriptInstall the debugging scriptIf laptop-mode-tools is installed, suggest uninstalling and, if you want, uninstallFix the brightness hotkeys issue (jumps 2 levels on every key press)Disable ethernet Wake on Lan (doesn't enable when on AC)Disable uneeded services: cron, anacron and atd (they don't enable when on AC)What the script doesn't:Add the noatime parameter to the ext2/3/4 partitions in fstab. You'll have to do it manually. How it works:In a terminal, run ./InstallAcer_11.6_PowerSaving.sh --help to get a full list of options. If you want to install everything: ./InstallAcer_11.6_PowerSaving.sh --installDisclaimer:This script comes with no warranty. Use it at your own risk. I won't be responsible for any damage this could do to your system or data.Manual Install:
Power saving tips:The Script:By default, an ubuntu install won't take too much care of saving power, which is very important in an ultra mobile laptop. You can easily setup the system to enter some power saving modes, specifically the sata controller and the sound chip......................

I'm tryng to install Linux Mint 16 on my new Envy 17-j113el, completelly removing Windows 8.1 (no dualboot needed)
I was able to install Ubuntu 14.04 but no previous version, like Ubuntu 13.10 or my standard OS, Linux Mint 16, which is based on Ubunto 13.10.
Seems that I have to wait for Mint 17 based on Ubuntu 14.04, right ? Any workaround ?
Why is this so ?
I dasabled UEFI going in "Legacy mode".

I've installed ubuntu netbook remix, and it really works great out of the box. Didn't try 720P youtube streaming yet.
Pros I found out so far (which are relevant):
- Great battery life, I had 35% left, and I still managed to get 3.5 hours out of it, including one hour streaming (reasonable quality), and half an hour playing Diablo II (game). I'm gonna give an update tomorrow!
- looks are quite nice
- very responsive
- plays 720P and 1080P fluently
- camera works
- wifi works good
- volume of speakers is good
- can be installed from within the windows OS
- pinguin
Cons
- two finger scrolling doesn't work yet, only one finger (using the edge) scrolling.
- keyboard layout had to be set to US
- unfamiliar applications, for some windows applications you might not have a substitute, but that's a con of Linux in general...
- different

I have the 13" Macbook Pro 7,1 and everytime I try to install Linux/Windows they come up with errors which basically say that they can't find my HDD or the Optical Drive during installation.
I don't like the idea of being stuck with OS-X.
Turns out it's a MBP 7,1...not 6,1.

I've always said MacBook's would be my next notebook because frankly I don't care at all for Windows. But now that it's time for me to upgrade, I'm more cautious to make the jump because I'm still a poor college student. The higher price is obviously a drawback, but I'm always curious how about software (being a programmer and all).
Since Mac's are Unix-based, I know my most used programs will run just as easily as my Linux distro (VIM, LaTeX, gcc/python/etc.) Other than having more open-source packages and an open-source kernel, I can't think of any software-related differences to OSX. Mac's of course have better proprietary (Apple, Adobe) and driver support. Leopard is one sexy and reliable operating system, and getting the iPhone SDK is a plus as well since I just upgraded to the iPhone (and love it btw).
Anyway, I know most of the advantages of getting a Mac over a PC. But not as much about getting a Mac over a PC that dual boots Linux. (BTW, I know OSX and Linux can be dual booted or Virtual Machine'd, but I prefer to just have one primary OS for work/school/fun). I'd get the $1300 13.3" MB if I got a Mac and a 3rd party memory upgrade. A similar spec'd Core 2 Duo PC runs at about half that or a little more. So it's either shell out the money for a Mac or get a PC and install Linux alongside Windows as my primary OS.
