I am interested in trying out the linux OS that dell provides for the mini 9
I'm looking at buying the dell studio xps 13 but i need to run linux on it. Whilst the laptop itself shouldn't have any problems with the linux kernal -
I need to know if the multimedia shortcut keys hardwired on the laptop will work under a linux environtment.
Does anyone know anything about this?
I've noticed drivers for Red Hat Linux are available, does anybody tried to install it in the Precision M6400
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhich distribution will run better ? meaning which one has the more drivers available and will make better use of the existing hardware inside the M6400 ?
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhat a great forum! Well well, I've been reading a lot about the M6400 and the M4400. I'm still undecided on what to get. A basic M6400 or a well loaded M4400, but that thread is already up right?
My main question is, what would be the best rig for Linux? For what I've been reading almost everyone is getting these computers because they are the best balance in features and quality while they also serve for gaming. That's why I have decided to narrow my search to these 2 specific models anyway.
Even when these computers come with RHEL 5.2 (Am I right?), I'd be opting for CentOS 5.2 64 bits, which is basically the same. Maybe Ubuntu 8.10 or OpenSUSE 11.1 for all my day-to-day needs and Matlab. Gaming is not that important but its a nice plus.
Who has tried one of those on these machines as hosts (not as Virtual Machines)??? From what I've read, the M4400 is ISV certified while the M6400 uses a desktop chipset to achieve its maximum of 16GB of RAM. Which one is the most reliable, stable, compatible machine .....
I'm thinking of buying a laptop which is quite powerful and can run Linux (most of my work is in Linux). I'm an engineering student and frequently need to use computationally intensive applications,
which are also graphically intensive. Following a post on another subforum (http://forum.notebookreview.com/show...6#post4548016), I was asked to confirm with Dell users here as to what their Linux experiences are.
I would appreciate inputs and suggestions about purchasing laptops from users of Dell laptops, especially the Latitide and Precision.
I understand that the appropriate subforum for this is different, but since this is now only a matter of deciding which Dell model to purchase
I spoke to Dell India today and received a quote from them regarding Studio 15...but surprisingly they say that they don't have drivers for XP/Linux...
I know that the laptop comes with Vista Premium but I thought I could always change it later if I wanted to...whats this weird thing about not providing drivers for other OS?
Could someone from India who's got Studio 15 help me out?
i have got an extra internal HDD which is 250gb. so i m planning to install some other operating system just to see how they work. like linux. where can i get the driver if i want to install Linux. and what about Linux Operating system.

I want to remove Vista & dual boot XP & Linux
I have searched the forum for options on dual booting my xps 1330 with either linux or XP however I cannot seem to find what I am looking for.
Basically, i already have vista installed and I do not want to format that hard drive to install either xp or linux.
I am fully aware of the fact that If i install XP after vista it will mess up my boot record. Is there any way around this?
I was very pleased after I installed Mandriva 2010 on my system. WiFi driver, sound driver,
touchpad even nvidia's graphic's driver's installed like a charm. Highly recommended OS.
I have been using Ubuntu Linux as my primary OS for the past two years and although i find Win7 that came with my new Z11 ok, i really want to go back to linux. However after a few google searches (and some more search in this forum) i understand that there are problems with the dual gfx adapters and the fake raid that these beasts come with, which is also locked in the default bios. On top of that, there are worries that the GC scheme of the Samsung drives only works with ntfs (although i am a bit skeptical on that, especially since the raid configuration might block this anyhow). Could someone please provide answers/pointers on any of the above? when i tried to boot the latest ubuntu beta from usb i got a complete messed up display.

Was going to use the second hard drive for a second OS and since I am waiting on Proper Windows 7 driver support for it was going to try something else out.
I was wondering if i buy a linux version of the aspire one to save money, can i switch it to XP myself? Or, since i know nothing about linux, I need to be able to use the office suite and windows based internet explorer add-ins...i dont think i can with linux, or can i?

Trying to run PC Linux 2009. Let me know.
For anyone waiting to buy a Mini 9 or Mini 12, the price of the Mini 9 is now $299 and the Mini 12 is $399.
I think this is going to make the Mini 12 a much better offering for those that might need a little bit more screen and hard drive.
My E7440 is new and shipped with Ubuntu (12.04), it has the A11 firmware version

Is there fix for this coming in a firmware update and/or is Dell working on a patch for the linux kernel?
I own a Dell Inspiron 17R 7720 and recently my HDD crashed and I can't access the Windows 8 PRO partition anymore, so I bought a SSD to reinstall it.The problem is that my Windows is OEM and I need to backup the PBR Image and WINRETOOLS using only Linux (I can't access Windows) but I don't know how and I'm afraid to miss anything and lost my Windows Key or the diagnostics tools provided by Dell.

Anyone have any luck being able to enable their Nvidia card within Linux? I could care less about trying to switch... But I have spent some serious time trying to do it and unfortunately you cannot just turn off the intel graphics card in the BIOS..

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to figure out the difference between the two other than the casing (one's metal and one's plastic). The 2140 uses a SATA connector vs a PATA connector. So for $25 extra(lowest config 2140 vs highest config 1000) you get a metal case and SATA connector?
Why would anyone buy the 1000? Am I missing something? Oh and the 2140 has a higher volatage adapter for 'fast charging'...what's left for the 1000?
I'm experiencing very strange problem with my Dell Vostro 3750. This machine is equipped with USB 2.0 capable USB ports and USB 3.0 capable ports. During the power-up any USB devices (or even multiple devices via hub) can be connected to the USB 2.0 capable port. However if even a single device is connected to one of the USB 3.0 capable ports, the system doesn't start.
I've reported the problem on the Linux kernel related lists: 59561
But the only answer was, that I should report it to Dell suggesting fixing of BIOS. Maybe this is a BIOS related problem, but Windows 7 starts on the same hardware configuration without problems.
As I'm mainly using Linux for my work, two USB ports are practically useless for me, I have to connect all my USB stuff via hubs to USB 2.0 ports.
My current BIOS (after last BIOS upgrade) is:
DMI: Dell Inc. Dell System Vostro 3750/0VP036, BIOS A12 02/22/2012
I own a Dell Inspiron N7110, i7 processor, 4GB of RAM with a Nvidia Geforce 525 optimus/intel integrated GPU. I need to install a Linux distro (preferrably ubuntu or debian) and dual-boot windows7. Is it possible?
