yesterday two of my laptop keys fell apart. F & G. All the mechanisms has come out of it. I've tried fixing it but it wont work. The buttons theirselves work. the thing is my keyboard looks awful because there are two blank spaces. my laptop is a few years old so im not too bothered but i just wondered: how to re-assemble the keys?
I have an XPS 14z, which has been owned for a mere 10 months. And well, yesterday I went ahead and formatted and re-installed the Windows 7 64-bit Operating System. It seemed to install fine and booted to the desktop. I then had to leave the house to run some errands, so I shut the laptop down. When I came back, I went to turn on my laptop. The Dell screen popped up, but then right after appeared a black screen reading "Operating System Missing". And well, I have been at it trying to fix this issue all day long! I have already ran the diagnostic tests, and they all were passed. So far I have tried the following to no avail:
1.) Booted Windows Disc --> reinstalled Windows = Same Problem
2.) Booted Windows Disc --> "Repair Your Computer" --> "Command Prompt" --> after "X:Sources>" typed in "bootrec /FixMBR" and "bootrec /FixBoot" = Both said successful, restarted, only to run into same problem
3.) "Command Prompt" --> after "X:Sources>" typed in "chkdsk d: /f/r" = "failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50"
4.) "Command Prompt" --> after "X:Sources>" typed in "bootrec /rebuildbcd" = "Successfully scanned Windows installations. Total identified Windows installations: 0 The operation completed successfully."
I struggled with this on 2 occasions. I had found the answer once and couldn't remember the second time around. In searching I found many do not know how to use keys that do not appear on your laptop physical key board. The following info at least works on a Dell XPS 14Z. Let me know if this works for you.
Computer Info (Typing ASCII on XPS 14z)
To pull up On Screen Keyboard to type ASCII on XPS 14z Laptop, use the following process. To add text info into Photoshop using ASCII is may be easier to type it in word, then copy and paste.
Click Windows Icon (Open Windows Start Menu)
In the “Search Programs and Files” field, type OSK
all newbie nik here would love a bit of help with this please when i type certain letters on my dell vostro llaptopthey dont work nothing happens the cursor keeps flashing in the same place .....
For some reason when i press on the FN+F4 or F5 this brings up the small display showing the brightness level but it will only move the level one or two notches in either direction. It will not adjust the brightness of the LCD display on the laptop at all.
I tried to update some drivers on my laptop and now the network controller is missing on the laptop and I don't have Wi-Fi on it, have to plug in network cable to be able to access the internet. try to get windows to locate it online but cant find it.
I recently formatted my laptop to windows 7 ultimate and since then can not get my function keys to work. I've reinstalled drivers that I thought might work and nothing.
When I could no longer adjust my brightness is when I noticed that my function keys were not working. Is there any other way to adjust the brightness on my laptop besides the function keys? If so I have not figured it out.
I am having a problem with my keyboard on my dell studio 1737. When you press certain keys on the keyboard the adjacent keys are activated as well as the key itself. I've tried various techniques I've read about to correct the problem such as removing power from the laptop for an extended period of time and installing new bios drivers but nothing seems to work. From the information I can gather this is a common problem with this model of Dell laptop. What is the best way to correct this problem. Will replacing the keyboard correct this problem or is there some other problem causing the malfunction?
I have a SZ650N/C and I was using XP Pro but now to Vista Business 32bit. My Vaio Camera Capture Utility is getting a "NO INPUT" blue screen but the camera works on my msn.
I currently have the ver 2.1. does anyone know how to fix this?
I've tried googling but figure this would be a better place to ask. For some reason the VAIO Control Center won't let me map Snipping Tool to one of the keys.
Not only does it not show up in the explorer but it also wont recognize it as a program when typed in manually.
Its an .exe and it exists in the System32 folder and I just don't get why it won't work
I have upgraded to W7 pro, ran the companion DVD and everything is good except the FN brightness key (also changing brightness in W7 itself) they don't work.
I have been to the sonystyle.ca website and down loaded apparently the correct utility settings driver 5.0.0.07280 for W7 Pro 32-bit (at least it says on the website its compatable) and when I try to run it, it says it's for Vista only.
I have ruined the C key. Can anyone tell me if I can just replace the one key OR must I replace the WHOLE keyboard and if so, what sort of cost might I be looking at?
I have been having a bit of a nightmare with Sony support. Basically, when my laptop first arrived, my F7 key always looked a bit "off" - the backlight under it always seemed brighter, and it was slightly raised on one side, but I ignored it - how often does anyone use F7?
Anyway, I was cleaning the keyboard because it has that stupid type of keyboard that picks up every bit of oil (drives me mad!) and the F7 key just came off. It wasn't even a harsh cleaning
I've installed Windows 7 x64 (build 7077) successfully on my Sony VAIO VGN-FZ31M. Everything seems to work OK except for the Fn-keys. The volume controls however seem to have somekind of effect, just without the visual volume bar appearing.
I've tried looking at some other threads and downloaded some Sony Notebook Utilities -package from the U.S. VAIO support site but was unable to install it on my laptop since the installer wasn't too happy about my VAIO model (after all, this apparently is an European model).....
From the beginning, the A key on my Vaio VGN-Z590 keyboard has been typing aa instead of a. It sort of comes and goes - sometimes it's rare, sometimes almost always. I've had the same happen on o key just once or twice but no others. This never happened [just corrected aa here] to me on other keyboards [corrected again] incl Fujitsu and IBM laptops.....
I have a VAIO SZ3 an I decided yo make a win vista clean install, I installed all drivers and everything works correctly except the FN+brightness or FN+ any combination. But misteriously FN+volume and mute works, I don't know why.
I also realized that when I switch the button of speed and stamina the window that ask you if restart does not apear.
My Dad decided he wants to try out Skype, so I decided to set it up for him. The webcam function wouldn't work and after repeatedly reinstalling the webcam driver from the Sony website, I realized that it just wasn't showing up in the Device Manager. Repeated installations and hardware scans are just not picking it up. Let me clarify that this is the first time he's ever tried to use the webcam on the computer.
Is this likely an indication of a hardware problem?
This is the driver I've repeatedly tried installing: [url]
The strange part is that although the driver installation goes very quickly, no errors show up and it states at the end of the installation that it installed sucessfully and lists the following as the driver name:
Windows Driver Package - Ricoh R5U870 (UVC) (04/02/2007 6.1005.209.0)
Despite this, it's not showing up at all in the Device Manager or anywhere. It's basically as if the camera is non-existent physically.
If it is a hardware problem, then I'm just going to buy him an external webcam. The laptop is out of warranty.
I have a Sony FW285 with a clean install of Vista Ultimate done about 4 months ago.
I recently noticed that when I start up Vaio Control Center, Sony Battery Care and Power Management doesn't show up anymore. This is really bugging me since I have my battery set on 50% charge so I need a power outlet everywhere I go.
I've tried reinstalling Battery Care, Power Management and Vaio Control Center but like mentioned, Battery Care just refuses to show up in Vaio Control Center
This is almost a classic problem. I just installed XP SP3 on a Vaio G11. I did everything according to Sony's plan. But the brightness keys don't work.
Is there a chance that Sony's drivers were written for XP SP2, and that SP3 is the cause of my problems?
Reason I'm thinking this is that SP3 recognized some devices that SP2 doesn't recognize
I did a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate version x64 on my Sony VPC-CW13.
But the function keys are not working properly. The volume one work but no OSD. Contrast, and monitor selection one since like it is not working at all.
any tips?
I install all the driver available on the esupport.sony.com website, but still no luck
i upgraded my hard drive and installed windows 7 this weekend. Everything is working fine except for my fn keys will not work.
I have looked high and low through the forums to try to find a fix. I have been installing Sony drivers for the past 3 hours, rebooting between each installation, and it still isn't working perfectly.
I've gotten to a point where the Volume keys work, and when I push Fn+F5 to lower the brightness, the little brightness meter pops up and the sound is made. But, the brightness won't go any lower than maximum.
The screen is really bright and it's killing my eyes, and draining my battery crazy fast!
how to get these working? I know the folks here got it working for the AR but the same install insturctions dont work for FW. I also a post earlier about a guide for installing XP but it did not work.
how to get your FN keys working and for this particular laptop at that Sony Vaio S460. There were descriptions of installing drivers in certain orders, as well as going to a third party site for the contrast portion. Unfortunately, that thread was closed.... but i had a very important question:
I've recently switched from XP to Windows 7 completely bypassing Vista. I had to re-install all the drivers from Sony (i believe i have most of the important things working) however when it came to the FN buttons, those few keys took me longer than the whole process of changing windows. TO my surprise, many of the drivers adapted themselves from XP to WIndows 7. Anyways, after trying everything, i think I finally got MOST of the FN buttons working.. However, when it comes to the volume portion, it only allows me to control up to 1 bar.. So when I click FNF4 - the volume will go up but only to the max of 1 bar?
My Pg Up/Dwn/Home/End keys are with the arrow keys, but to access them, I have to press the function key. I like the arrows for a game, but for normal business work, I would prefer to have them locked as being Pg Up/Dwn/Home/End.
got my SR-430J. it's probably an older model since it came with Windows Vista...
So first thing I did was did a clean install of Windows 7 Enterprise (a RTM version, and the genuine key is applied so it should be the same as the market version)
I can't for the last 3 hours get the brightness key working... >_> the audio key works but not the brightness... can anyone offer a solution? If not is there another way through windows to change brightness on a laptop screen?
I followed several guides here.. installing the shared library, firmware parser etc... still doesn't work ;x
I am using Windows 7 Enterprise 64-Bit Japanese...
