Was working fine. When I turn the machine on it freezes on the dell splash screen about 60% threw. When the hard drive is out the computer boot fine. (obviously no OS though). The hard drive is also making a beeping noise. Dell said they would send me a new hard drive, but I want to know what caused this as of yesterday when I received it I did a diagnostics and the hard drive was in perfect condition. These things happened today could they have caused it?
1) Laptop did not go to sleep in my backpack and was totally on for about 15min. (Overheat?)
2) Windows froze today and I had to hold down the power button to turn it off.
3) I had used another Dell power supply to power my machine as I did not have the regular cord, but it worked while attached and this problem did not happen till around 30-40min later after it had been unplugged.
I am puzzled to see that part of my 320 gb 7200 drive is not recognized. A right click on C drive states that I have 282 GB left out of 297GB. I do not want to move forward with my install before accounting for this space. So...anyone have any advice?
As I have a Dell Studio XPS 1640 it has a a few of Dell specific driver I must install or I wil not have certain features. I am not thinking dock here. Bios ,chipset, IDT Sc. Windows grabbed the latest driver for the Radeon 3670 but not the Catalyst SW. Nor would I want it to. Has anyone dl'd the latest Catalyst suite? Any fellow xps owners out there test driven Dell's drivers on Win 7 pro yet?
I had to install a new hard drive onto Dell Inspiron 17R (5720, Mid 2012). Ordered new hard drive from Dell, and also Operating System reinstall DVD. Windows was loading, but computer shut down and did not restart. I pressed the power button to restart, but now get 'BOOT MGR is missing' error, and don't know what to do next. I chose 'Custom Installation' and selected the only hard drive that was visible when prompted. Computer will not restart with DVD or without DVD. What now? Windows 7-
I recently got a Sony Vaio Sr-210J/H through some private deal...but when I got it I noticed that I got scammed and the laptop didn't have a Hard Drive . So, I buy a 250 Gb Hard Drive, I open the hard drive slot, and i notice that I don't have anywhere to connect the hard drive to. I finally found this thread: Guide to : Upgrading Sony SR HDD & Ram which helped a lot and confirmed that i wasn't crazy. I'm missing the metal part and whatever connects the HDD to the motherboard. Does anyone have any idea where I could get the parts, or what to do?
I've just run into a major headache with a Travelmate 4404WLMi given to me by a friend. It appears that when he decided to keep the hard drive, he also lost track of the hard drive caddy for the machine.
I haven't had too much luck finding a caddy on eBay. I think part of the problem is, though I was able to find a service manual for the computer, Acer seems to have gotten confused and listed the part number for the TM4000 caddy in the service manual instead of this one. There's a picture right next to it for a caddy that looks entirely different from where the screw holes are on my 4404. The notebook disassembly guide is also all wrong for this unit.
Now, my question is, in the search for caddies on eBay I happened to notice that the one for the Aspire 3610 looks exactly like what I need. Would anyone happen to know if that caddy's the solution to my dilemma?
I have a newish (4/2014) Thinkpad E440 with a 500 GB HD. All of a sudden, the hard drive has filled up. I cannot account for all of the space. Here's what the system says: Â 35.2 GB available of 452 GBApps: 31.4 MBPictures: 76.1 GBVideos: 137 MBMusic: 20.9 GBDocuments: 8.14 GBDownloads: 0 bytesRecycle bin: 0 bytesÂ
So you can see this is a wee bit over 135 GB. Where in the world is the rest of the space? Here's what I've looked at / done so far:  "System Protection" is turned on and is currently using 10.48 GB. I have the max set at 3% (13.59 GB). There are currently 3 saved restore points. --> EDIT now it says it's using 5.97 GB and there are only two restore points now.I've run "Disk Cleanup" and it says I could regain 33.6 MB. Whoo-whooooo!The disk was 1% fragmented so I ran defrag.I ran the error checking tool on the drive and it said there were no errors on the drive. Now, after finishing the defrag, I've lost more space "as we speak"20.4 GB available of 452 GBApps: 31.4 MBPictures: 76.1 GBVideos: 137 MBMusic: 20.9 GBDocuments: 8.14 GBDownloads: 0 bytesRecycle bin: 0 bytesÂ
FYI: When I go to Lenovo Solution Center and click on Support and then go to Configuration History, the calender there shows the yellow triangle with the exclamation point in it for "System Events" on every single day that I use the laptop. When I click on one of those days, it shows multiple "Application Errors". This has been going on since the day I got it. I don't know if there is a log somewhere that is spiraling out of control.  I forgot to say I use Kaspersky Pure 3.0 for virus software and I have it performing a Full Scan, a Vulnerability scan and a Critical Areas scan every day. I also scanned the drive with Malware Bytes and it did not find any malware. Also I am running Win 8.1 - it came that way from Lenovo.
Something recently happened to my laptop, and now whenever I boot up my laptop, I get a message stating that "No drive detected", and I don't know if the hard drive might be damaged or not.
I tried connecting the hard drive directly to a desktop pc since it's a sata hard drive, but my desktop pc just froze on the boot screen whenever this hard drive was connected.
I also was going to try and use a hard drive external case to maybe connect it to the pc this way, but I wasn't sure if it would work
I have a HP 15 Notebook PC with no dvd drive recently I was sent the system recovery cds from HP. I dont have an external dvd drive. What i do have is a Toshiba Satelight laptop with Widows 7 and a good dvd drive. Also I have a 500 GB external hard drive. I was thinking maybe I could copy the disks onto the external harddrive with the Toshiba dvd drive. Then attach the external hard drive to my HP 15 Notebook by usb port and install Hp recovey disks from the external hard drive.
Laptop was working fine with the factory Hitachi HTS541680J9AT00 80gb drive.
I purchased a Samsung HM160HC 160gb drive as it's supposed to be the fastest PATA laptop drive available.
I put it in and the laptop just kept saying "no operating system found" with the XP disk in the drive.
I tried several optical drives and got the same issue with all of them.
I then hooked a USB optical drive up and it wouldn't boot from it.
I removed the internal optical drive and the system then booted from the USB drive and loaded Windows fine.
I just assumed it was a fluke and once Windows was done loading I removed the USB drive, installed the factory internal optical again and turned it on...
"No operating system found".
This is where I'm stuck. If I remove the optical the system boots into Windows fine. There were no issues like this with the other hard drive.
I have tried setting the hard drive as Master, Slave, and Cable Select with no change.
Laptop has the newest BIOS.
Samsung does not offer firmware updates on their hard drives.
So I bought my m1330 about 2 months ago with the 1 year complete care service. Approx. 2 days ago I dropped my laptop and it cracked the casing on the side of LCD. The crack does not affect the functioning of the laptop.
My laptop hard drive is about to fail and I plan on replacing it myself. However, if I'm unable to locate the original system drives, rescue disk, or Windows 7 software, what files do I need to make sure I copy before installing the new drive? Â I may go ahead and purchase a new copy of Windows and do a clean install but I'm concerned about the BIOS and other drivers.
my girlfriend accidentally dropped her laptop from about a foot off the ground.
The laptop was on during the fall, and remained on afterward. However, needless to say the laptop froze. Did a hard reboot, and Vista took abnormally long to boot, only to find that the computer began to run check disk. After the check, everything past and it booted windows normally.
Seems to work ok, but once you try to run any program the computer eventually locks up and you have to hard power down to get anywhere (no, task manager doesnt work). Once it boots again, it once again wants to run check disk. Is there any way to repair such damage? Could the damage be physical to the drive sense it was dropped?
I have done some research, and found some 500gb SATA HDD's for laptops, but I have noticed that they are 5400rpm. The fastest large drive I have found is a new Hitachi, 320 7200rpm drive (which is supposedly coming out and will probly cost a fortune) Some told me that the speed doesn't make a difference when they are a big drive. If I get a 5400 rpm drive will it kill my gaming (oblivion, Half life 2, Bioshock, etc.
I have Dell XPS 2013 laptop purchased in June 2013 with Windows 7 professional OS install in it. Suddenly the laptop stopped working giving an error message with complete black screen:
error: no such partition. grub rescue >
When I took it to the service center they told me the hard drive of the system might have failed leading to such error. I am still unsure is it due to hard disk failure? On the top of that I have many important working files stored in the system for which I could not able to take back up. Is there any way I can retrieve my files? If I need to purchase a new hard drive which specifications I need to order. Unfortunately the system had only 1-year warranty period...
my computer was fixed and he replaced the hard drive...on my hp computer...but now im noticing that is no longer centrino, bbut dual core....let me know if he sneaked and took it...or if when u fix a hard drive, the processor is replaced as well...
my laptop has failed the hard drive diagnostic with an error code of 2000-0142, and looking here in the forum I see it means that I should replace the hard drive. That being said, I am not actually having any problems with my computer. I ran the f12 diagnostic after a routine scan notified me of a smart short test fail and it came up on the diagnostic as well. Does that mean that at any moment I would actually see something happen?
I dropped my Sony Vaio VGN-AW125J laptop, my foot broke the fall, but a portion hit a table on the way down. My AC jack was banged up, so I ordered the part from Sony. My computer repair guy said that the new jack hasn't made a difference and still can't get power. He said it wasn't the operating system since he pulled out hard drive and it still doesn't power up. My original symptoms were when I powered it up, it would pretty much shut down after a few seconds.
Is there anything I can ask my computer guy to check before we trash it?
I dropped my laptop and while the computer hardware all still works, the LCD is broken. However, I do not know how to get the broken one out, let alone a new one in. Does anyone know how to replace the screen on the dv4-1430us?
I have an almost-new Z series, bought in the US (I am in the UK) in December.
It seems the hard drive has failed, as it started BSODing on boot. I tried to run the recovery partition and also Windows 7 recovery mode from a Windows 7 install disc, and these simply hung. Further attempts to fix it using Windows XP and Windows Vista media also failed with similar issues.
I was able to boot using NTFS4Dos, although it didn't seem to read my data partition very well, as files were missing.
Booting with Knoppix was more fruitful, as everything seemed to be there. I rewrote the MBR and didn't get anywhere, so then I deleted the three partitions (recovery, Windows reserved, and data partition) and started again.
Now Windows installs, but it BSODs after the first reboot.
I guess my hard drive has failed, somehow (there are no mysterious noises, and I don't recall any impacts, it's remotely possible my kids took a magnet to it, however).
I run into my 1st issue in 4 years of ownership. when I turn on my computer (pavillion dv8305) it turns off while booting. Now my battery has been dead for like 2 years but I always have it plugged in anyway when using it. Let's just say if it can't be fixed to turn on how can I access my info on the hdd? I have documents and some files/programs I need.
Can I connect an "Apple" hard drive into a laptop of another brand? I've been looking at this old IDE 60Gb harddrive but it says it's for Apple. It's basically the same, right?
I have a HP Pavilion dv7 Laptop not booting. I ran memory test, checked OK. Ran hard drive test message said smart check passed but long DST failed.Â
Failure ID : GLP5BR-66R7AO-QFPKOJ-61FSO3Â Â Â Â Hard Drive 1.
My old Aspire 1690WLMi runs Windows 7, but can`t run Aero cause it has an integrated graphics card. Hard drive space is super tight since it`s only 80gb. Thinking of getting a new laptop around $1000, but also considering just getting a new 320gb hard drive for $100. What do you think i should do - new laptop or new hard drive.
I have owned my hp envy 17 laptop for almost 2 years now. Recently my computer has been making a really loud noise and it seems it is working a lot harder than it needs to be. I suspect the fan or the hard drive is the culprit but I have convinced myself it is the hard drive.  When I start up my computer the loud noise begins almost immediately after startup. This noise sounds like the computer is working as hard as it possibly can, almost making a grinding noise. Even after the computer has booted up, this noise continues for another minute or two before it stops, then my laptop becomes quiet. What puzzles me, and leads me to believe it is the hard drive, is the fact my computer get unreasonably hot when the noise occurs; it never used to do this before.  This situation is something I have never heard of before. My laptop for some reason ,when it is moved or bumped, even the slightest, start to "rev" and the hard drive roars; it does this for five minutes or so. It also does this when the laptop is closed, and in "sleep mode"; the slightest bump lets it off like a baby. I suspect that there is a switch, flap or wire that is not attached properly and when moved it triggers the hard drive.  The main thing I do when the sound occurs is I close the laptop lid which puts it in sleep mode and turns off the hard drive, silencing it for the time being. This solution I came across by accident; I turned my laptop sideways when the sound occurs and the sound stops until I put the laptop upright again(Laptop is open).Â
My Aspire 5720 z laptop was accidentally dropped, and now the screen whites out to black. Do I need to replace the monitor screen ??Is a new video card needed ??
My father’s notebook has been acting up for awhile. It beeps continuously at startup.
You would have to "F2" to the BIOS then exit the BIOS, then start up screen to come up again, beeps again repeat "F2" back to BIOS, but eventually XP would load. Unfortunately everything was sluggish, keyboard wouldn’t work right. So in my limited computer knowledge I decided to reformat the notebook. I could not find any back up disk that came with the notebook so I created a back up disk from factory settings via the Acer eRecovery Management process. I have ran this recovery disk twice. Both times I have installed the recovery disk I get NTLDR missing as well as the beeps have not gone away. From some online research beeps mean computer is telling us something is wrong with the hardware. Number of beeps tells what specifically; unfortunately I can’t find what continuous beeping means. NTLDR missing I found usually means that the computer is looking in the wrong place for the file.
I have no idea what I should do next to resolve the problem. Should I go out and buy an OME copy of XP Pro. Will friends XP Pro disks work as long as I use the XP Key found on the bottom of my laptop? How can i figure what hardware is causing the notebook to beep?
Ideally what I would like to achieve is a clean install with the most limited amount of Acer bloat ware installed. I am trying to find a list of what programs are needed and what programs are bloatware.
Using my inspiron 2330 (only 18mths old ) as normal next thing it tells me it encountered fault and has to reboot anyway it keeps saying scanning and repairing drive (c) then does not allow me to log in so i manage to get into bios to do a scan and it guves me a error code of 2000-0142 Â validation code of 112406 and and then says harddrive 0-s/n wd-wmc152946178
When i finally manage to log in my desk top screen is flashing and keeps telling my hard drive fault ....
