Dell :: Dropped Laptop, Now Chkdsk Every Boot?
Apr 3, 2009
my girlfriend accidentally dropped her laptop from about a foot off the ground.
The laptop was on during the fall, and remained on afterward. However, needless to say the laptop froze. Did a hard reboot, and Vista took abnormally long to boot, only to find that the computer began to run check disk. After the check, everything past and it booted windows normally.
Seems to work ok, but once you try to run any program the computer eventually locks up and you have to hard power down to get anywhere (no, task manager doesnt work). Once it boots again, it once again wants to run check disk. Is there any way to repair such damage? Could the damage be physical to the drive sense it was dropped?

I dropped my Sony Vaio VGN-AW125J laptop, my foot broke the fall, but a portion hit a table on the way down. My AC jack was banged up, so I ordered the part from Sony. My computer repair guy said that the new jack hasn't made a difference and still can't get power. He said it wasn't the operating system since he pulled out hard drive and it still doesn't power up. My original symptoms were when I powered it up, it would pretty much shut down after a few seconds.
Is there anything I can ask my computer guy to check before we trash it?

So I bought my m1330 about 2 months ago with the 1 year complete care service. Approx. 2 days ago I dropped my laptop and it cracked the casing on the side of LCD. The crack does not affect the functioning of the laptop.
Am I still covered by DELL?

My daughter dropped her XPS15 laptop.
Trying to start it up now, we get beeping at about 1 second intervals.
A very brief message then pops up, part of which says: PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
We then get a screen showing options for the Boot Priority Order.
Choosing Hard Drive, the next message says no hard drive detected.
I've checked nothing has been dislodged by the fall and the hard drive is secure.
Can we retrieve data from the hard drive if that is what's the problem?

I have an XPS M1530 (just got it late august 08)
I recently, for the 1st time, tried to run chkdsk and had it scheduled for teh next time i restarted my computer. however, when i restarted, nothing happened. it went straight to the windows vista logon screen like normal.
i tried a lot of things. chkdsk through GUI (tools tab in properties of disk C and through command prompt.
anyone else have this problem, and if u solved it, how so?
i want to run chkdsk....and this is quite frustrating seeing as how my laptop is pretty new and it wont run something as simple as this.

I have a Sony VAIO VGN-N365E that worked great until my son knocked it to the floor. After that, it had trouble booting properly and was making that awful clicking sound.
I ran CHKDSK, and it identified several problems, so I ran CHKDSK /R but it also hung at 13% completed (after running it overnight).
I ran the VAIO Hardware Diagnositcs Quick test, which indicated no errors. But, I also did the Hard Disk verify & repair, and it got stuck at 1% (after 2 hours). When I stopped it,
it did indicate that it found and repaired a problem, so I ran it again, only to get stuck at 2% (overnight). When I stopped it again, it indicated that it found and repaired an problem, but it still can't complete the test .....

I have an INSPIRON E1505 with Windows XP. Â The McAfee protection was not working properly, so I contacted customer service. Â They checked my computer and said that I should contact the computer manufacturer because I have errors on CHKDSK. Â I've done some research on this website, but have not been able to find a solution yet. Â
I ran the full Dell PC diagnostics, and everything passed except my battery.
I used this page [URL].... to guide me through chkdsk, running it from "my computer" and choosing "scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors." Â Phase 2 appeared to be nearly down when I received the prompt, "Windows was unable to complete the disk check."
I'm not sure if this matters, but the computer was not used for 2 years from 2009-2011, as I was out of the country. Â After I got it running again and ran updates, it seemed to be working just fine until I recently discovered this issue with McAfee.

As a routine maintenance task, I ran chkdsk /r on my Inspiron 1545 last night and it hung at 69% in stage 5 for over 10 hours. I figured it was hung for good, so shut the machine off. When I turned it back on I got the black screen with a "missing operating system". Message.
Worst case, is it as simple to get a factory restore by hitting F8 at bootup like I;ve seen posted on the web? If not, I do have the factory system recovery disks I made, but I really want to save what's on the laptop already.

An hour ago, I accidentally dropped my Inspiron E1705. The notebook fell from 3ft high and hit the ground on its bottom side (the same position you use the laptop). I tried to turn it on to see if it worked and here's what I found:
The notebook turns on and the battery charges
The hard drive led is blinking like booting
The keyboard works
No beeps
Screen is blank, no video at all, I tried using an external monitor and got the same result

Looking for some help here and don't know where to turn.
My M1530 fell, it worked for a while, but then it crashed. On Vista startup, it will bluescreen with either an UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME or that IRQL_IS_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL (something like that anyway) error.
Dell's diagnostic tests gave an error on the Hard Drive DST Short Test of 2000-0142. Dell says that means a broken hard drive and they are sending a replacement.
I tried putting the M1530's hard drive into a Latitude D620, and it booted! Slowly, but it booted. I was able to see the drive and use it for a good 12 hours before I shut it down.

Dropped my computer and now it wont boot up. Instead it just keeps turning on and off. The screen is also cracked. HP tells me that the hard drive or motherboard have been shifted with the impact and are not being detected properly causing the power cycling. They are offering to fix it for $400. I would like to attempt to make the repairs myself, if possible.

I was setting my bag down and it slipped out of my hands from about a foot high. It dented the corner of the unibody, not the batter cover. It was in a bag with only a small amount of foam at the bottom.
I was sick about it. I called the apple store and they wanted $600, LA Computer wanted 500, and finally found a place in the midwest that only charged me 350 to replace it. I got it back and its as good as new. I DONT work for them or know them personally but Mission is the name of the place that helped me. They do deserve some credit.
I now carry it in a suspension laptop bag by Swiss.
The funny thing is that I have dropped my Thinkpads higher than that and they have never needed to be repaired.

I noticed that my laptop takes 1 minute to boot, you know when the black screen with windows xp logo appears, stays like that for 1 minute before I get to the blue screen where I can log in by choosing a user.
I remember my laptop used to take almost 30 seconds to boot and now is taking twice the time.
My system is a dell inspiron b120 with:
Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002 Service pack 3.
Intel Celeron processor 1.40 Ghz, 1.24GB of ram
I have had this laptop for few years so I know its getting old but sometimes we can do something to make it work better

I just tried to upgrade my current processor in a Dell Inspiron 1520 from an Intel C2D T5250 to an Intel C2D T8300.After replacing the old CPU with the new I put my laptop back together and then press the power button. The three lights by the power button light up and the caps lock button in the middle of the three lights starts to flash then after a minute or two the computer shuts off. I thought it may have been that the CPU was DOA so I popped the old one back in there and got the same thing. I have the most up to date BOIS from Dell A09 as well

Just a FYI for you, on Thursday i was nearly hit by a car and for some reason at that time i was carrying my DV9000 without any laptop bag or any protective anything at all... The thing dropped straight into three inches of snow.
Came back home, first thing i did was take out the hair drier and get rid of any water that the melting snow made. Second thing was to turn on the laptop, and it booted up first time. Third thing was to connect it to my amp and speakers, put on some Tech N9ne and have a beer. I actually finished the beer before the chorus ended... Then it was time to run to work, with laptop and all. Despite being exposed to cold yet again, she still did a flawless job. This going out to anyone who thinks HPs are unreliable.

My Dell Inspiron 1764 laptop will not boot up after using windows 7 installation disc in repair mode, as it has to restart several times during set up, it would not restart after first phase of operation. It never got to finish operation. Now it is just coming up with a black screen saying,Windows boot manager Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change it might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. insert windows installation disc and restart computer (which it will not let me do)
2. choose your language settings  and then click nextÂ
3. click repair your computer
if you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance
file: BootBcd
status: 0x000000f
info: an error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data
After start up even pressing F8 before logo disappears numerous times it will not let me into that menu, so I cant access start up in safe mode or last known good configuration. No matter what I do it will not go past the above message on screen. I do have 1 year left on my warranty..Even pressing power button for 30 seconds with power disconnected, or pressing F8 button several times on start up doesn't go into menu at all....

My husband dropped his Aspire 3680-2682 the other day and the screen went wonky. I booted it off a VGA monitor and it seems to be fine running from there, BUT I could not get it to boot to VGA except in safe mode, and when I choose to boot in regular mode it goes to the LCD screen and doesn't allow switching the display to the external monitor.
This is the only thing that concerns me that it might not be just the screen that sustained damage.
I was eventually able to get th bezel off (it doesn't come 100% off on this model but doesn't need to) and remove the lcd panel for inspection. The thin board taped to the back of the panel doesn't seem to be visibly broken or strained and the connectors to it were taped so firmly in place they didn't budge on impact. The small board that rests at the bottom of the top case under the bezel (the inverter?) can't be inspected well and I don't want to damage it by trying. In any case nothing appears damaged to the naked eye on or around the screen.
The first pic is how the screen looks when booted; it also (visibly) flickers and redraws continuously. The second shows that applying pressure allows a clearer view of the console and stops the flickering.

I have found a replacement screen online for 50.00 and feel comfortable enough trying to replace it rather than spend the cost of a new laptop on sending it for repairs.
However, if it's not just the screen I don't want to throw more money at this.
In your experienced opinions, does it look like the damage is typical of a broken LCD screen and not something in the motherboard? (no clue on how to get a closer look at that stuff. took every screw out of it last night and couldn't get the bottom case to reveal its secrets.)

I recently bought an acer v3 371 and was looking forward to using the webcam. Â For the first few days it was fine quality but then suddenly, possibly after an update of some sort, the quality went down and now it looks really terrible. Â I tried many things such as refreshing the computer back to default settings, installing various camera programs (I was using the standard camera that came with windows 8.1) such as Acer Crystal Eye but changing the resolution in these makes no difference at all to the terrible quality. Â
I look in device manager and it just seems to be a generic device 'HD Webcam' and the driver is from 2006, this seems to be the default one that windows selects but there must be a better one, I can't find it anywhere though. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the device several times but again no effect. Â I don't know exactly what the webcam is, because if you go to Acer's actual website to look for driver updates they list all of them EXCEPT the webcam drivers.

can't get my laptop to boot up/start. No sounds. No beeps. No nothing. Power cord indicates it is working fine. Battery should be charged since I rarely operate it under the battery. Has been running fine, no problems, I paused a movie and since then it is completely dark and not operating. Really disappointing since it is my main computer that I use every day.

Sometimes when I boot up my Dell XPS 12 laptop the keyboard doesn't work correctly. Â Certain keys don't type letters, sorta like the CTRL key or Windows key is stuck down. Â I have tried a lot of different things (pressing various keys, checking system logs, check keyboard status, etc.) and the only thing that works is to reboot the laptop. Â Most of the time this fixes the problem, but it is annoying to have to reboot when this happens. Â I have upgraded the drivers to the latest versions available on the Dell website. Â
