View 5 RepliesI'm about to order the Studio XPS 16 but don't know which hard drive option to pick. Can someone please tell me the pros and cons of each?! Also how hot does the laptop get compared to a Macbook Pro (which I currently own)? Thanks!

View 7 Replies View Relatedwhich drive is the better choice between the 128GB SSD (MLC) vs 320GB 7200rpm options currenlty on the Z690.
I've heard the MLC SSD's are fast in certain areas, but arent always the best options vs the 7200rpm drives yet... and have some issues with multi-tasking, etc. So basically, my question is how is the 128GB Samsung MLC rated vs the 7200rpm drives Sony uses?
does it support the SATA 3.0gb/s hard drives?
looking at these in particular: ...
I am trying to decide between the following 2 Z's which are approx. the same price.
Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 2.53GHz / 4GB RAM / 128GB SSD / DVD±R/RW / Hybrid Graphics / 802.11AGN / WWAN / Bluetooth / GPS / Webcam / Windows 7 Professional [ SON VGNZ880GB ]
Intel Core 2 Duo P8800 2.66GHz / 4GB RAM / 500GB HD / DVD±R/RW / Hybrid Graphics / 802.11AGN / WWAN / Bluetooth / GPS / Webcam / Windows 7 Professional [ SON VGNZ850GB ]
I do everyday tasks like MS office,MS Streets, and use approx. 10GB for my multimedia files.
My first question is, will I notice the difference in speed? Will be the SSD with P8700 faster than the HDD 5400 RPM with P8800 in terms of boot,read-write documents etc?
If I go with the 128 GB SSD, how much free space can I expect to have on the drive after W7 ?
I am about to upgrade my laptop HD from 320GB 5.4k RPM to either 500GB 7,2K RPM or 750GB 5,4K RPM.
Which one do you think I should get?
Will 7200RPM will give noticeable different in speed compare to 5400RPM ?
How much in % do I get improvement in speed?
Has anyone installed this hard disc on the Sony Vaio SZ series notebooks:
Western Digital WD5000BEVT 5,400 rpm 500Gb SATA
[url]
If yes, then I would like to know how it performed (too hot etc?)
I don't know which hard disc my SZ came with.
I've worked out the physical process of replacing the installed 200GB 2.5 inch Hard Drive to a 500GB Werstern Digital 500GB 2.5 inch Hard Drive. Overall it looks pretty easy. It's what happens once the drive is fitted and I turn on the laptop that I'm a bit worried about.
Do I just load the recovery discs as usual or is there something I need to do in BIOS? Also will the motherboard cope with a 500GB Hard Drive?
I just bought a new 500GB 7200rpm Seagate HD and I plan to change my laptop harddrive with this new Seagate HD.
My question is,
After I install the new HD, can I use the Recover back up DVD that I created using my old HD
I want to make a thread dedicated to collect what we "know" of this new drive.
In the last week the 256GB SSD showed up as an option for some of the XPS machines...........................
XPS 16, which SSD do they use for the 256GB version and what speeds can I expect from it?

The drive can be bought by itself from their spare parts store for a very good price so I am interested in seeing the the hardware is good.
If someone could supply the OEM and even a model number it would be greatly appreciated.
this is the one I am looking at:

does anybody know what model of SSD hard drives apple offer on their website for macbook pros? for example is it intel, samsung etc... I just would like to know the model so I can compare it to other models out there.
View 7 Replies View RelatedJust got it and installed it - still playing around.
Steps to installation - existing HD WD 320GB 7200 (a truely good and silent drive)
New SSD - G.Skill 256GB SSD
1.Sell one small offspring to come up with the cash.
2.I cleaned up my HD - took all the stuff I did not use out
3.CCleaned it
4.Did the last defrag I should ever do
5.Installed the SSD in my Roswill USB case and connected to my M1330
6.Initialized the drive
7.Formated the drive
8.Downloaded the latest build of Acronis 2009
9.Cloned the HD to the SSD
10.Booted up quickly with no issues.
Works great. Boots fast.Everything "pops".
I will miss little Bobby but he kept touching my stuff.
By the way 8 months and no Nvidia issues.
I have a Studio XPS 13 with the 256GB SSD option and absolutely love it.
My wife uses a Mac... one of the new 13" Macbook Pro's. It came with a 160GB 5400RPM drive but she needs more room and after seeing my XPS fly with the SSD she has decided that she just has to have an SSD.
Looking out on the Dell website I see that they sell the 256GB Dell branded SSD for under $500 which seems like a really good deal but I'm not sure if it will work in the MBP .....
I have an E4300 coming today with a 256GB Encrypted Mobility SSD in it.
I had always thought that the encryption was totally SSD-based. But in thinking about it, if that was the case, then I could move the SSD to another notebook and it would still work, since the encryption is IN the SSD.
So, there must be something (TPM, etc) that ties the encrypted SSD to the notebook.
I upgraded the hdds in my DV9543 to 7200rpm's. I didn't copy anything onto the new drives I simply installed Vista onto them, after trying several times unsuccessfully to install XP.
The problem is windows doesnt see the 2nd drive when I go to my computer it only shows one of the drives. Has anyone ever experienced this? Anyone know how to fix it?
I tried to do a search but couldn't find anything, I thought I would try here before HP customer service I have asked them a few questions before and it seems to me that they are reading from a script or something and wouldn't be able to help if they didn't have a manual.
Just picked up a (seemingly) great deal on an E4300 from the Outlet with a 256GB Encrypted Mobility SSD for about $1100, and wondered which SSD actually comes with it? I'm hoping it's at least a 2nd Generation Samsung and not some old 1st Gen Samsung that's slow as molasses!
View 9 Replies View RelatedDefinitely it has faster reading and writing speed, but what about the heat and noise? Besides,
I also heard that with a 7200rpm HDD the body of e6400 may even vibrate when in use.
I have a compaq nc6320 business notebook with a SeaGate Momentus 7200.4 that's done crashed 2 times what would be better than this drive with 7200 rpm's?
View 6 Replies View Relatedwhat I can safely do with my new 17rse? I'd like to do something along the lines of putting a 32gb mSata (no option pre-purchase) as cache for my HDD but does this become pointless if I'd also like to add a larger 256gb SSD as a primary drive with OS on it?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI skimped a little on the hard drive when I ordered my xps1640. Since then I have set up raid on my desk top & notice a huge improvement. Since doing that my xps has started to seem very sluggish. Would there be much of a noticeable speed increase taking out my xps 5400rpm hdd & replacing with a 7200rpm hdd?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI am about to receive my brand new XPS 1530 and it was ordered with the 320gig 5400RPM drive. I will mainly be using the system as a light weight gaming/entertainment laptop as i travel.
I am considering buying a new 500gig 7200rpm HDD but i want to know first if it will make that big of a performance different?
I'm trying to grasp this one... but my mind can not wrap around it, so here goes. I just got off the phone with Dell University sales and talked to the rep. Since the i1720 came out in July I have spec'ed and spec'ed and seen that IT DOES NOT COME WITH OR HAVE OFFERED A 7200RPM HD.
I have a e1705, my dad has one, my girlfriend has one, and my uncle has one... all on my recommendation. I have dabbled/worked in the IT industry since I was 10 and I can't believe that this speed RPM is not offered.
5400RPM existed clear back in 1994.
I just bought my GF a 7200RPM 7k200 200GB Hitachi HD with 16mb of cache for her e1705 from NewEgg.
When we ordered all of our e1705's we intentionally ordered them with the cheapest HD's cause we ordered 7k100 7200RPM 100GB Hitachi's from Froogle searches.
Am I the only one that can't wrap his/her mind around this one....
I am hating this drive big time.. performance is good, but the heat on left side of the palm rest is unberable. After few mins of placing the palm on left hand rest it is burning my veins... I still feel the burn sensation for long time even after taking the hand out.
All the guys w/ Segate 250G 7200rpm experience the same? I have 2 E6400s, both have same HD, same heat problem. Seems like a bad designed drive... probably have to start looking at SSDs, but damn those too expensive!
I got the new MBP 13" and I want to upgrade the HDD to a 7200rpm one.
So, which hard drive from newegg (since Im gonna buy the RAM from them) should I get (320GB is what Im looking at)?
