Jan 31, 2009I've a VGN-SR290 with Vista 64, I'm thinking to downgrade to XP but using official downgrade discs, are these discs available somewhere to buy them?

Oct 5, 2008I'm looking at buying a Dell. I already have an old Dell machine.
If I buy the Dell it will come with Vista Home Basic. Can I use my old Dell recovery discs to downgrade the laptop to XP Home?
Will there be any issues with drivers, etc?

Mar 22, 2009I installed the 9.2 catalyst + driver and it messed things up big time, so I got rid of it and installed the original driver from Sony site, but it didn't come with the catalyst panel

Jan 13, 2009I got my SR on Christmas Eve. Everything has been great, until now. Today I connected a VAIO USB mouse to use instead of the touch-pad for the first time. Now, it seems like the touch-pad has gotten a mind of its own.
The touch-pad responds, but it seems to be very sporadic. When moving the cursor around, it seems to jump. The movement has also become slow even though in the mouse settings I have it set on fast .....
Sony :: Flashing New BIOS Sr290 Froze, Now It Won't Boot At All
Apr 1, 2009I was flashing the newest BIOS to my SR290 last night and in the middle of flashing it froze. I waited quite a while to make sure it wasn't just taking its sweet time but eventually had to pull the battery as holding the power button didn't even do anything.
So I wait a few and then try to boot it back up and it won't power up at all. I plug it in and the charging light won't turn on.

Jan 5, 2009I'm having a problem with my SR290. The hard drive free space keeps on decreasing. Its fallen from 200 to 175gb, and I haven't installed any new programs. Is this somehow related to Vista Business and does anyone have a solution?

Jan 16, 2009Im having a major issue with my SR290 and Sony Repair Center specifically.
Ok, I just noticed that my hard drive have been running constantly and never under an idle state about 3 weeks ago.
I restored the computer twice but every time I turn it on, the hard drive and the fan makes really loud noises. Even when there are absolutely no applications running,
the hard drive runs and makes obvious noises. I used to be sitting late at night surfing the internet and having absolutely no noise from the laptop, but now even when I just turn it on, its really loud. If I leave it on for over a few hours, the fan exhaust starts to expel really warm air

Jan 19, 2009I am considering the two following models: SR290 and Z540. My question relates to the overall build quality of these models as well as battery life with the extended battery.
Basically Im deciding between these 2 and a lenovo. The lenovo is heavier than both, is well made, and has ridiculous battery life. Just curious as to how the sony's stand up over time.

Sep 10, 2009I have SR490PBB bought from CDW last week and its recovery partition that contain Window XP has been deleted. Of course, I didn't create my discs as I was stupid. I tried to get support from Sony and it is not covered under warranty and they have hard time getting Recovery Discs as they said it new model.
If any of you have VGN-SR490PBB, help me get recovery discs. I think it will work for me too. I really need and want Window XP.

Feb 18, 2009One of my users has a Vaio SR and is trying to create recovery discs (DVDs) using Sony's tool. Sony's application fails at 24% every time with the following error:
"The disc could not be created.: Missing source folder or files."
It's running Vista and is pretty new, although they repartitioned the drive recently have installed a lot of additional software and may have uninstalled some Sony software. I'm thinking these could be the cause.
If not, any recommendations for third party software that provide similar functionality (full system backup images to disc)?

"Cannot use this recovery disc for this computer. Confirm the model type"
I have the right discs per the label on the discs (discs are labeled for VGN-600 Series), which I purchased directly from Sony. I contacted Sony, who was worthless on the matter.

Apr 23, 2009A few days ago sony replaced mobo in my BZ model, because there was a problem with onboard GPU chip.
Now I am unable to do a system recovery with my discs that were made from the same laptop before sending it to repair. I also noticed BIOS was upgraded, but I doubt this is the case.

Jul 12, 2009what Sony's policy (Sony USA) is on providing a 32-bit version of Vista with the laptops that now only include the 64-bit version (such as the Sony VAIO Z7xx series)?
From the information I have come across, apparently it is at your laptop manufacturer's discretion to provide you with a 32-bit OEM copy (which would also need a different product key than the one provided with the laptop for the 64-bit version, since it is OEM and not retail) or leave you to purchase your own copy. Does anyone have experience with Sony in this regard?
if the Windows 7 upgrade kit will also be 64-bit only?
Sony :: 'Downgrade' From Vista To XP
May 20, 2009trying to "Downgrade" my Laptop from Vista to XP, I have a legal copy of XP and when I boot from disk it wont install it just says that it cannot find a HD to install to. I downloaded a copy of XP to see if my disc was just broken or something and it let me format my HD and install XP, the only problem i have with that is i wont be able to perform updates and i only have a small screen in the middle of my display (i assume this is because some drivers are missing) also i cant connect to the internet because there are drivers missing. I have been on the sony website and downloaded some but they dont work, i think its because there designed for Vista.
So my question is this, does anyone know how I can get my LEGAL copy of XP to install and also does anyone know where I can get compatible drivers for it? My Laptop is VGN-NR38E/S.
Sony :: VGN TZ330E XP Downgrade
May 28, 2010I have spent many hours trying to downgrade my TZ330E from Vista to XP. I need to load a couple of programs that will not work under Vista. I have all the XP files from Sony esupport ready to go and a valid XP installation cd. However, when the XP installer finally runs I get an abort message "A problem has been detected and Windows..." with the error message:
STOP: 7B-F78DA63C-C0000034-0-0. The disk is partitioned: C=20G, D=74G. The machine works fine under Vista.
I assume it is something to do with the disk, but I have tried downloading a variety of Sony drivers for Raid and SATA disks and using the F6 and S options but to no avail. Sony says the TZ330E disk drive is "ultra ATA" which I thought the XP installer should know about.

Jan 4, 2009I am hoping to avoid Vista all together and jump straight from XP to 9. I am sure I have read in some reviews that the Z comes with a downgrade disk but I now can't find mention of it! does it?
Also if you do downgrade do all the features like speed/stamina mode etc... work as they do under Vista?
Sony :: Z540Window XP Pro Downgrade
Feb 19, 2009My z540 seem to have an great deal of unwillingness to install window xp pro.
1. Blue screened right after it boot into the installation disk
2. Blue screened right before where you would go partition the drive
3. Black screen right after restart from copying files to hardrive - does not want to boot
What is going on? is my z540 curses? Or is there others?
I had the laptop warranty once already for other reason (keyboard and screen problem) cough. and they also ran a diagnostic check on hardware and it passed everything.
I am so tired of vista kept bugging out on me - half the time , my fn keys and stamina/speed switch does not even work after i used for a couple of days -.- and other reasons
Sony :: SZ71 XP Downgrade
Mar 3, 2009I needed to downgrade one of my SZ's to XP, and all went fine until the network driver install - but the automated driver install for the rest of the components seems not to have 'taken'. I followed the instructions to the letter and every time I boot Windows it asks me for the drivers fo the video, fingerprint reader, sound, etc etc.
What did I do wrong, and how do I get around it? It was for a piece of software which is XP only that I'm required to run, but if I can't solve this easily I'm just going to say to the guy I only run Vista and let him worry about it.
