Sony :: Vaio Sz Display / Graphics
Oct 12, 2009
I've problems starting my Vaio SZ2. They occured one day without changing anything (Hardware or Software) before.
If i push the power button, the screen backlight turns on but remains grey/black. No vaio logo, no boot screen, no bios access! I unscrewed the whole computer (3 years old) and checked all the cables. Then i released the screen cable from the graphic chip and tried booting with an external display! And that worked!
It seems to be a problem of the display/display cable or the graphic card.

Whats the major difference between 16.4" VAIO Display (1600x900)
and 16.4" VAIO extra-wide HD display (1920x1080). Upto what angle I could see my display in VAIO Display (1600x900)? Can I watch HD movies perfectly in VAIO Display (1600x900) ?

I use my Sony Vaio SZ691N for the most part playing games on Speed mode. Yesterday while I was playing a game the screen started getting really fuzzy and blocky with static and then shut down and whenever I tried to restart it, the screen would be fuzzy/blocky/staticky from startup and then go into startup repair. Startup repair couldn't fix it as well as restoring from an earlier point.
I tried switching to Stamina mode and it worked fine. The screen was normal (just had to adjust the resolution) but when I try switching back to Speed mode, its the same problem and my laptop wouldn't start up.

VGN - SZ79GN.
It's running an NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS graphics card.
Problem is that it won't properly support the new 1920 x 1080 resolution monitor he's got, therefore I'm assuming it needs a driver update from the 11/05/07 Nvidia Driver its currently got.
Problem is Sony Australia/Asia-Pacific doesn't list any Vista compatible drivers, only XP, and the Nvidia site says the driver for the 8400M isn't suitable for the Vaio range.

I'm looking to buy the new Sony Vaio E series laptop which has a ati mobility radeon 5650. Thing is, the graphics card is underclocked to 450mhz so I was wondering is it possible to overclock it to its default clockspeed of 650mhz?
I've heard that the temperature is barely affected when overclocking this graphics card to its default speed. So would it be safe if this is true?
Also is it possible to install new ati drivers as I've heard that Sony doesn't allow you to. Alternatively does anyone know if Sony actually keeps up to date drivers on its site?

I've got a Sony Vaio FE model. The screen, processor, ram, wifi, etc. all work well except the graphics card (geforce go 7600). I can get my computer working but only at a resolution of 640x480. If I go to display properties and increase the resolution, the screen shows a bunch of white lines all across for a second and then restarts.
Its very hard to use a pc at that resolution! Sometimes I can change it to 1280x800 if i get the computer hot enough (weird, i know) but then (i guess) as soon as it starts to cool down the screen goes blank (after some time it will go back to 640x480 in 8-bit colour mode and show a nvidia nv4 error) and then I usually hold the power button to turn it off cuz I don't want to wait for the nv4 error which takes 10-15 mins.

I have owned my Vaio Z21WN/B since april.
Over the last few months the graphics seem to have deteriorated dramatically, particularly when using the 'speed' mode. The laptop will not play any high definition videos (even with a resolution of just 720p as well!) remotely smoothly, videos which play without a hitch on my 7 year old Pentium 4 with 1gb of ram and 256mb graphics! In fact, graphics and the whole PC itself seem to run much more smoothly when using the 'stamina' setting. This really makes no sense in my mind. It's quite irritating and disappointing since I wanted to be able to attach this laptop to the 42inch plasmascreen with the HDMI cable and watch films!
I upgraded to a new driver to see if it would help (using one of the driver packs made by nautis/dox in the 'discoveries on Vaio Z hybrid graphics' thread) but it has not helped at all, just made the 'stamina' setting even slower!
Will I get around a complete re-instal to factory settings?

The standard graphics card is an Nvidia GeForce GT 330m, but the laptop's gaming performance could be higher with a 335m or even a 360m (for its premium price, I would like the ultimate machine if possible). How do these two other cards compare to the first in terms of size/motherboard compatibility/power drain? In other words, could I buy the Sony Vaio Z and successfully upgrade the graphics card aftermarket, and if I did so how would the new card(s) affect the laptop's battery life?
Are there any guides that would help me into the guts of the machine, and could I possibly proceed without voiding the warranty?

It seems for some reason my Z690 does not work well in the speed setting. This results into videos that seem to refresh a lot, games that are slow and have jagged edges and in general slow video performance.
Whats funny is that on stamina setting, all my graphics actually do quite well. Videos play fine as do the games /w smooth edges

I'm fairly sure that my graphics card has died, the startup screen has a green grid whenever I turn the laptop on, and it only runs in safe mode.
I'm aware that in terms of pricing this could either be quite modestly priced, or really horrific, depending on whether or not the card is part of the motherboard.
if it's seperate or not?
The Spec of the laptop is here

when I turn on my Z, the screen glitches two or three times upon hitting the login screen. Does this happen for anyone else?
Sometimes, (it's happened once or twice) my graphics card even failed upon logging in and had to be reloaded, and even, on one occassion, completely shut down my computer (Straight to black, green light turned red) in the middle of casual browsing.
Are these causes for concern? Should I return my laptop?

Can anyone be kind enough to share a flash ROM copy of Nvidia Geforce 8400M GT notebook graphics display for
Sony Vaio VGN-AR61M? A backup copy done with Nvflash, NiBiTor or any similar flash app perhaps will do.
I need to flash my video graphics display which is no longer recognized. For some unknown reasons,
after installing and playing some high resolution games, my pc crashed and suddenly Windows 7 display won't accept any video driver except the standard VGA adapter

I own a VAIO VGN-N395E/B laptop. One day I found that the display is not working. The laptop boots fine but there is no display.
Is the display card a separate unit or integrated with mother board. If that is the case will I have to change the mother board?

How much would the difference in the Display be if I choose:
i) 16.4" VAIO Display (1600x900) with NVIDIA® GeForce® 310M GPU (512MB VRAM)
While customizing the F instead of:
ii) 16.4" VAIO Premium Display (1920x1080) with NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 330M GPU (1GB VRAM)
The second option is Full HD and seems to have a more powerful graphics card but I heard with the first one I would have more battery life?
What are the positives and negatives of each?

I just bought a second-hand Sony Vaio TZ 390, which came with Vista. I updated to Windows 7 and installed all the drivers. Everything seems to work but I cannot get the Vaio TZ to output to the external display. What happens is the external lcd gets a signal initially when I turn on the Vaio TZ (connected to the lcd) but it loses the signal shortly after I log into Windows 7. Btw, the lcd I use is a Samsung 2333HD.

I have a VGN-AR550U laptop. According to the property page for the Display adapter it is: NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT. I want to be able to run a Powerpoint presentation where the slides are being shown on a big screen and the notes are shown on the laptop screen. I understand this has to be done thru a dual monitor type of setup. Can I test this without actually hooking up the big screen or does it automatically go into a dual monitor mode when you plug in the second monitory. When I select presenter view it says I don't have a second monitor.

Recently I have been receiving a ridiculous amount of BSOD's. Today alone I have received at least 15 of them and they all display the same message "There was a display driver timeout".
It always happens randomly and I can never repeat the exact situation. It just BSOD when it wants.
The error code which appears is:
atikmdag 0x00000116 (0x86eb9510, 0x8f228c14, 0x00000000, 0x00000002)

I now own a Sony Vaio AW31 S/B notebook with full HD display (double lamp but non-LED).
Quite impressive machine, but I have one problem: In windows and IE8, the colours look a bit too "punchy" and contrasty for my taste.
I found that there's an ICC profile included for the display which by default is applied in the Windows colour management. When I watch my photos in the Vista photo gallery, the profile seems to be applied correctly, as the photos look very good and natural, but when I use a photo for example as a desktop wallpaper, it looks much more contrasty and not so natural anymore.
Vista itself also looks quite contrasty, and also many websites in IE8.
I already tried to turn off the colour management in the Vaio control center and find proper settings in the GPU driver (as I did with all my previous laptops without colour profiles) but didn't succeed in finding a natural setting.
So my questions:
How do you overcome this "problem"? Anyone maybe found good screen settings without colour management (which doesn't make so much sense if you don't calibrate your screen by yourself)? Or did you get used to the punchy look of Windows?
Is there any way to make Vista use the colour profile also for its user interface?

I want to use my notebook to do a presentation in class. However, no matter which projector I connect to my Vaio SZ440, the display is unable to be shown on the projector.
I've tried Fn+F7, not working, tried stamina mode, not working, tried speed mode, not working. I've tried "Connect to a projector or other external display", not working. I've no idea what I should do. I really need to fix this or else I'll get screwed this semester. Every other notebook the projector connects to, it will automatically detect and show the display. Only mine is like this.
Please help. About 1 year ago I didn't experience any problem when connecting to a projector. I didn't remember what exactly I do to make it go bad. But I really need it to work this semester.

I've got a european Sony Vaio Z (first generation), which seems to have some major overheating issues, especially when it's connected to an external display.
Setup:
Sony Vaio Z11VN -> Docking station -> NEC2690WUXi (running at 1920x1200)
Here's a summary of temperatures when this machine is in SPEED mode (Nvidia 9300gs) in Windows XP (idle)
GPU: 92C(198F)
HD0: 41C(106F)
Temp1: 66C(151F)
Core0: 78C(172F)
Core1: 78C(172F)
Clearly, the temperature drops if I switch to STAMINA mode, or if I unplug the laptop from the docking station, however, in the latter case the temperature drops to perhaps 70C.. so that is without running it on the external 1920x1200 display.
and when running 3d applications or games, the laptop can simply shut itself off for no reason whatsoever (overheated?)
I've heard about overheating problems of the NVIDIA GPUs.. is this such a case? (NVIDIA 9300GS)
I'd like to know if anyone else have had this problem with their Vaio Z (i've seen ppl having problems with the FZ)
My model is a VGN-Z11VN (swedish, although distributed via the UK)

I am planning to get 2x 23inch monitors 1920x1200. So now here is the situation. I want to connect both of these to my sony vaio z. I have found solutions such as the Matrox DualHead2Go box and what not.. But i was wondering if i can get the sony z docking station and use that for dual output. Unlike some other threads that i've read my situation would be to plug the hdmi on the laptop to monitor1 and the dvi from the docking station to monitor 2.

I think it was time for my 8600M GT to die as well... I restarted my 2007 MBP and no display came up on my monitor (connected to MBP). So, I restarted and tried again...no display. I proceeded with unplugging my monitor and restarting to see if anything came up on my MBP display; it remained black. I tried resetting PRAM three times and still, no display came up. I have lost my display before, but not after this many attempts on trying to "revive" it.
I guess I need to take it in to have the graphics card replaced as well as the Superdrive as it is spitting all CDs and DVDs out (mind you, they worked perfectly on another MBP). I have a password at the log-in screen. That shouldn't be a problem for the guys repairing my MBP, will it?
