Sony :: Vaio FW21L Display Driver Timeout
Feb 24, 2009
Recently I have been receiving a ridiculous amount of BSOD's. Today alone I have received at least 15 of them and they all display the same message "There was a display driver timeout".
It always happens randomly and I can never repeat the exact situation. It just BSOD when it wants.
The error code which appears is:
atikmdag 0x00000116 (0x86eb9510, 0x8f228c14, 0x00000000, 0x00000002)

I own a VAIO VGN-N395E/B laptop. One day I found that the display is not working. The laptop boots fine but there is no display.
Is the display card a separate unit or integrated with mother board. If that is the case will I have to change the mother board?

I'm trying to update my Sony VAIO VGN-CR510D/W graphic's driver (GM965). Intel's site has the newest one 7.15.10.1666 and mine is currently at 7.14.10.1295. I go to "Update Driver" in my Device Manager but It does not find a new one. I downloaded the new one manually but it won't let me install it (Not supported). I am running Vista Home Premium 32bit.

When Installing the Sony Drivers, it is NECESSARY to install 01, 02, and 03, in that order (and it may be necessary to run 01 as an administrator). Otherwise you may not have functioning FN keys and other anomalies.
System Drivers
01 - Sony Firmware Extension Parser Device Driver v8.0.1.1
02 - Sony Shared Library v5.5.0.10160
03 - Sony Notebook Utilites v1.0
04 - Intel Chipset Driver v9.1.1.1023
05 - Intel SATA Driver v8.9.4.1004
06 - Intel Turbo Boost v1.0.0.1030
07 - NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M Video Driver v8.16.11.8783

I recently downgraded my sony vaio from Vista to Xp. And with the help of this site and others, have tracked down nearly all of the drivers needed to make it work. The only thing I am having problems with is the sound card. In the device manager, it shows that the SigmaTell High Definition Audio Codec has an error code 10 (will not start) I am not sure what else to try to cure this and get sound back on the laptop.

I've problems starting my Vaio SZ2. They occured one day without changing anything (Hardware or Software) before.
If i push the power button, the screen backlight turns on but remains grey/black. No vaio logo, no boot screen, no bios access! I unscrewed the whole computer (3 years old) and checked all the cables. Then i released the screen cable from the graphic chip and tried booting with an external display! And that worked!
It seems to be a problem of the display/display cable or the graphic card.

Has anyone seen this error on their VPC-Z series?
I've seen it twice now... it flashes up something about "188.8" or something but that vanishes quick. In Event Viewer, it says:
Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.
Is it bad, or just iffy drivers? It recovers instantly.

I have a Sony Vaio N130G that has the original drivers for the wireless card.
Is there a way to get something like PROset/Wireless software to work on my model?
Or anything that helps get a better signal than the standard software/drivers?

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FS93S laptop. It is about 4-5 years old. I bought it in Thailand so I think it is a Sony Asian region model.
I installed Windows 7 on it today without any problems. It runs fine, but I am having some driver problems as expected. Even though there are a couple of red lights in the Device Manager, all my hardware is working fine except for the wireless network card. I don’t mind the errors in the Device Manager as long as everything works somehow. But I also can’t get the function keys working on the laptop, which I would like to have working too.
I called Sony in Thailand and they said the laptop is too old so Sony won’t be supporting it with new drivers for Windows 7.
Are there any Windows 7 drivers from other Vaio models which might be compatible with my laptop?

I've noticed on several occasions that the sound output is not restored after unplugging the noise-cancelling headphones. Volume up and down (via FN key) have no impact. Usually, Muting and then Unmuting resolves the issue, which seems to point to a driver issue.

Anybody know what the solution is to the toshiba bluetooth driver that keeps causing explorer errors? I have a VGN-SZ660N. Toshiba makes a update to the driver, but it is only for Toshia brands. As of now I do not know of a solution to this problem from Sony.

How much would the difference in the Display be if I choose:
i) 16.4" VAIO Display (1600x900) with NVIDIA® GeForce® 310M GPU (512MB VRAM)
While customizing the F instead of:
ii) 16.4" VAIO Premium Display (1920x1080) with NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 330M GPU (1GB VRAM)
The second option is Full HD and seems to have a more powerful graphics card but I heard with the first one I would have more battery life?
What are the positives and negatives of each?

I just bought a second-hand Sony Vaio TZ 390, which came with Vista. I updated to Windows 7 and installed all the drivers. Everything seems to work but I cannot get the Vaio TZ to output to the external display. What happens is the external lcd gets a signal initially when I turn on the Vaio TZ (connected to the lcd) but it loses the signal shortly after I log into Windows 7. Btw, the lcd I use is a Samsung 2333HD.

I have a VGN-AR550U laptop. According to the property page for the Display adapter it is: NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT. I want to be able to run a Powerpoint presentation where the slides are being shown on a big screen and the notes are shown on the laptop screen. I understand this has to be done thru a dual monitor type of setup. Can I test this without actually hooking up the big screen or does it automatically go into a dual monitor mode when you plug in the second monitory. When I select presenter view it says I don't have a second monitor.

From browsing the forums, i see that everyone is having trouble updating their drivers. Mobility modder currently does not support the ATI 4 series but there is still a way to install the drivers for us fortunuately . By doing this, you are able to install the display driver v9.6 but no CCC unforunately; however you can still retain the CCC v9.2 from Sony's official drivers.
1> Download the appropriate version OS of the 9.6 driver from [url]
2> Double click the file you just download and click install. It will unzip a folder to C:ATI (default). These are driver files. When the actual installation wizard comes up, cancel it.
3> Browse to C:ATI9-6_beta_win7_64_dd_CC (Driver name, e.g.)PackagesDriversDisplayW7_INF (For 32-bit) OR W76A_INF (for 64-bit)
**Btw, I am doing this example based on the Window 7 Install. (Other versions of the OS should be the same except the INF file name may be different)**
4> I am under 64-bit so I will use W76A_INF as an example for this guide. Double click on the INF file (for W7, it is named C7_81757)
5> Scroll down the file until you see a list like;
"ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT" = ati2mtag_RV610, PCIVEN_1002&DEV_94C1&SUBSYS_0D021002
"ATI Radeon HD 2900 PRO" = ati2mtag_R600, PCIVEN_1002&DEV_9400&SUBSYS_30001002
"ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT" = ati2mtag_R600, PCIVEN_1002&DEV_9400&SUBSYS_25521002
6> Add this anywhere between the entries you see above (does not have to be exact, just place this entry somewhere along the lines of the WHOLE list)
"ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570" = ati2mtag_M9x, PCIVEN_1002&DEV_9553&SUBSYS_9033104D
Congratulations, the display driver can now be installed ONLY VIA the HAVE DISK method.
7> Quick review on HAVE DISK method; Device Manager > Right Click ATI 4570 then Update Driver Software > Browse my computer > Let me pick a list of Device drivers... > Have Disk > (Now browse to the INF file you just edited, in this example; the C7_81757 inf file.) Install, voila, DONE.
8> Now, to get the CCC v9.2 (Can't get 9.6 yet), get Sony's ATI drivers, run it and click on CUSTOM install, NOT EXPRESS, install CCC only and anything that is mandatory (DO NOT INSTALL THEIR DISPLAY DRIVERS!!!) .Voila, CCC 9.2 function (which is the same as 9.6 essentially).
I believe this method works for NW series w/ ATI 4570 too.

I guess I have similar issues re drivers on win7 Home Premium 64bit. I recently did a clean install of the W7x64 (full retail) on my tt11wn/b (Core 2 Duo 1.2ghz, 4gb ram). Everything seems to be working fine, except for some driver problems:
- Light sensor doesn't work, even though it has been enabled in the vaio control center.
- Base System Device issue in the 'Device Manager', unrecognised device perhaps a card reader, but under 'SD host adapters' there is SDA standard compliant SD host controller recognised.
- Lastly, modem issues, recognised incorrectly - Globetrotter HSUPA Modem.
Have been surfing internet past few days for solutions, but didn't find any, also checked Sony Europen Support Portal for 64 bit drivers, which provides some but apparently not for the above. For me, the most important thing is get the light sensor working properly, otherwise I don't use the later 2 much anyway, but fixing them is good too.

However, poking around the European Vaio link site I've found a couple of news: first an updated Graphics driver here, but also poking around (in the Originally Installed section) saw an updated Alps Pointing device driver. The version I have installed is 7.2.* while the one for the VGN-Z51XG is a 7.5.*. Downloading the driver I could see that it supports two finger browsing, pinching to zoom and a couple of other features.
Nifty I thought; however I cannot install the driver in my computer - it says "Your operating system is not supported".
Has anyone else tried this? I thought that the pointing HW in all Vaio Zs was the same? Surely Alps cannot build a driver that only works in Win 7 x64 Professional but not Ultimate?
Can someone with a Win7 x64 Professional try to install the driver and then report back with both succcess or failure?
