Feb 13, 2009Here in the UK I'm having some trouble extending my warranty on an XPS M1530 tha bought from the Dell Outlet (its a refurbished machine).
Dell are investigating for me.

Jun 24, 2009I am considering getting a Latitude e6400 from the dell outlet, but was wondering whether any of you remember/know whether refurbished systems normally qualify for microsoft's free operating system upgrade? Here it would be for a free upgrade from vista business to Windows 7 professional (manufacturers including dell supposed to announce these programs on friday)
If the system doesn't qualify, I'll go ahead and order a refurbished system from Dell Outlet before Friday, or buy a new system on Friday.

Nov 12, 2009I recently purchased a VGN-SR490PBB which came with preinstalled XP Pro. According to all the literature, I am entitled to a Windows 7 Pro (32-bit) upgrade.
I proceeded to install the Recovery Media Kit that came with my laptop. The recovery media says basically, "Use this Recovery Kit to recover the preinstalled operating system and applications..."
It installed Vista Ultimate (64-Bit). I am being shipped the Windows 7 Pro (32-bit) upgrade from Mentor Media. So you can probably see the issue already, 64-Bit OS installed, 32-Bit upgrade disks in the mail. Not going to work.
So here's what happened so far (whole process below took 2-hours).
1. Chatted with a live person from Sony's Tech Support person, who directed me to Mentor Media .....

Sep 29, 2009I bought the FW460J/T with $50 mail in rebate, and I also get a free upgrade to Windows 7 from Sony. I have a few questions regarding the Windows 7 upgrade:
1. Do I have to mail in the UPC bar code? If yes, it might be impossible because I have to send the UPC bar code along with the $50 mail in rebate.
2. Should I buy the full version of Windows 7 for a fresh clean install even though I get a free copy of the upgrade version of Windows 7?

Nov 20, 2009I have just received my upgrade discs for both my new Z620D laptops, followed the rather vague instuctions to the letter, clicked Upgrade. All went well until it asked for the licence key. Does the W7 upgrade licence key come with the discs or in an email? The original vista key does not work.

The computer can't detect it's bluetooth hardware. I tried installing the driver from esupport, but still no luck. how I can get this working?

I am having a problem with the function keys though.
Everything works except the brightness controls both in stamina and speed mode.
I tried reinstalling numerous drivers but nothing seems to work.
Does anyone know the fix for this issue?

Oct 22, 2009I have a FZ280 E/B. I spent over $1800 on it 2 years ago. Sony is not providing support for the upgrade. Not only are they stating they won't upgrade they offer us the opportunity to buy a new notebook that will support the OS. How nice is that?
I don't know if we have any recourse here. I have already sent a scathing email to Sony support. I will continue to do so until I hear a response I like. I've been a life long Sony supporter/customer. Unless this is resolved that will stop. If anyone has any ideas feel free to chime in.
I realize we may be powerless here but I know I don't enjoy being screwed continually by Sony. They know Vista was terrible and didn't offer the 'downgrade' to XP option for our model. Now the 'better' (remains to be seen yet) OS comes out and they won't support that either.

Nov 24, 2009I just did a clean install to Windows 7 professional 64-bit from Windows vista home premium 32-bit as my laptop is capable of running 64-bit version of windows.
However, i completely wiped out my drivers for my sony buttom functions such as the utility button for FN keys and also control centre, power management, event service and etc.
I have went to the Sony Europe esupport to get the drivers. Is there a particular order I need to follow while installing them since I read from somewhere that you need to install the drivers in a particular order for them to work since they are dependent. Also, many threads say to install the 'sony DLL utilities' or 'original utility package' file which does not apply to my Sony Vaio version. However, I did notice 'setting utility series' folder in the download driver section. Are they the same?

Oct 27, 2009I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FW290 with Vista Home Premium 64x that I’ve had for approximately one year. I would like to upgrade it by replacing the original 5400rpm HD with a 7200rpm HD and a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium 64x.
Here are the questions I have:
Is there a preferred hard drive that works well in this style of laptop? I’m considering a Seagate Momentus 7200.4 or WD Scorpio Black.
If I install the new hard drive, can I boot from the Windows 7 installation disk and go? Will the basic hardware function properly at this point; CD drive, internet connection for Windows installation, etc.? Is there anything else I need to be aware of?
According to Sony eSupport, the VGN-FW290 model is “Windows 7 upgradeable”. Does this mean all the Sony Windows 7 drivers are available to provide the full functionality of the computer with a fresh install? There’s only a handful of Windows 7 Home Premium 64x drivers, on the Sony website, compared to the Vista Home Premium 64x OS. Do I use a combination of Vista drivers along with Windows 7 drivers? For example, I have the ATI Radeon HD 3650 video adapter and a Blu-ray read/write drive, but don’t see a Windows 7 driver for them.

1) Insert your upgrade DVD into your DVD Drive and load up "Windows Explorer"
2) Browse to your DVD rom drive and expand it, there should be a bunch of directories, and you should have 2 that are called "Win7OS32" and "Win7OS64".....

Oct 26, 2009With all the hand wringing folks have been doing about the lack of drivers for a clean install of Win7 I thought I'd jump in to the deep end of the pool with my FZ190 and investigate an alternative. My good friends Rajesh and Dr. Pratik have done clean installs of Win7 on FZ models, but I decided to take a different approach... the "dreaded" OS in place upgrade. Partly out of curiosity, I wanted to see if it would work, but mainly because I have a ton of software that would need to be reinstalled, if I did a clean install. That would mean days or weeks of inventorying every thing I have installed, digging up installation media and then installing all the stuff. I just don't have the spare time. So...
This past weekend I imaged my C: drive (all my data and I mean ALL my data is on D:, I am a fanatic about that). MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP OF YOUR C: DRIVE BEFORE YOU TRY AN UPGRADE! I ran the Windows 7 Update adviser and it said I had some issues:
