Sony :: Z External Monitor
Oct 21, 2009
I want to buy an external monitor for my sony z590. I was wondering what resolution the graphics card on the laptop can support. I want to maintain the same 16:9 aspect ratio, so i'm looking at monitors with 1600x900 or 2048x1152.
Does anyone have any experience with this? The only reason I'm looking at the 2048x1152 is because I want to have the same clarity and sharpness on the monitor as I do on the laptop screen.

I'm looking to get an external monitor for my z series.
1. Is it best to get an HDMI monitor - what are the advantages over a standard monitor?
2. Will the graphics card be able to power more than my current 1600x900 res?
3. I'm looking for a good 21-24 inch monitor, thinking about Samsung,
4. I'm assuming running dual monitors is out of the question?

I just picked up a Z laptop. Got the docking station the VGP-PRZ1. The dock has a vga and DVI connector. When I connect two monitors to the dock the software will only allow me to turn one on. I get an error "this gpu only supports a single display"
Does that mean I can not use 2 external monitors?

I am trying to use an extra monitor at work (in extended desktop mode, not clone mode) so that I can use by the laptop's display and the extra external display.
The external monitor is 24" with native resolution of 1920x1200. It works great when hooked to my desktop or other machines.
When I hook it to the laptop, it becomes fuzzy and slightly blurry. Not horribly, but enough to hurt your eyes and make you not want to use it. Anyone had this problem? I've tried several different cables to eliminate that as an issue, but like i said - it works fine when hooked to my desktop.

When I attach an LG 22" 1920x1080 monitor it eventually starts to slow down. Video won't load properly, the mouse starts jerking, etc. This is the secing F-11 I've had this issue with. I don't see memeory leakage but I have 8 gigs of ram, I loaded drivers carefully, and checked each, but the heck of it is that the laptop works perfectly when I remove the monitor. Could it be the monitor itself? It works with my SR & AW. Both are Vista machines though.

I've got a Sony VAIO Z690. I'm trying to connect it to my Westinghouse L2410M monitor - it is a 24" 1920 x 1200. Connection is through HDMI.
I've got it running at native resolution, but the text on Windows and applications look blurry. Colors also look dull.
Strangely, when I played a 1080p movie, the quality seemed ok. But once I closed the movie, the text is still blurry and the colors are dul

I have 2 identical VAIO laptops. Sorry don't remember the model. If important
I will check when come home. But they are last year model core 2 duo.
Silver ones
One of laptops fall down. The screen is not functionning (just all kind of lines).
It goes to windows prompt( I can see background of login box.
When I connect external screen, there is no output signal.
First, I thought that something is really wrong with the board. FN F7 make no changes.
But I decided to connect external screen to my second identical laptop.
And it not gives any external signal. But when I login to windows I can switch to external with FN F7.
Looks like F7 is managed by software inside the Windows.
Logically output from the laptop should be during the boot.
What are my options? Don't want to put a nice hardware in the garbage.

I just bought a used but fully working Vaio VGN-FW11e with a cracked screen (got it for a good price). The lcd-panel had been removed but the lid is intact. The cracked screen didn't bother me since I planned to have it permanently hooked up to my projekter using the VGA-output.
The problem is that it doesn't seem to turn on the VGA-out before Windows has loaded, i.e. it is impossible to see the POST/loading of BIOS. When trying to restore Windows to its factory settings (since the old owner had left all his files and folders all over the place) using the Vaio Recovery Center something went wrong and now I'm left with a dead system.
When turning the computer on I can hear and see what seems like a proper POST, i.e. the hard drive spinning, the dvd drive spinning etc. But a few seconds after start, when it's supposed to start loading Windows it just stay still, most likely with some kind of error message.
I desperately need to be able to activate the VGA out during BIOS to be able to reinstall Windows. According to Sony this is not possible. But it sound almost silly since every other laptop I have had has been able to output a picture to VGA directly during POST. Is there some way since the obvious Fn-F7 doesn't work?

I recently just purchased and received a fancy Dell e6400 from one of the many dell deals. My eyes are light sensitive from looking at many computer screens over the years and due to this I avoid LCD screens and much prefer flat CRT monitors. My goal is to use the e6400 as my workstation computer while using the VGA out to power my 19in Sony CRT .....

i dissasembled my presario cq60 and when i put it together the monitor won't activate.
i tried using an external monitor and the monitor refused to turn on from standby, a safety feature of the monitor. the small card in the underneath with 2 wires leading 2 the monitor, (i assume that is the laptop version of a graphics card) is fine, inserted properly, and i had a slight issue with the plugs fitting, but that was soon resolved.

I just submitted an order for a new vaio z and while waiting for it I thought I'd look into getting a nice external monitor for home use. After reading through the forum, I can't find any report of a vaio z owner successfully attaching an external monitor with a resolution of more than 1920 x 1200 (due to no dvi-dl compatibility). Specifically, I was hoping to get a 30" 2560 x 1600 monitor.
Is it safe to conclude that it is impossible to connect a 2560 x 1600 external monitor to my new vaio z?

I'm on the lookout for external monitors (20-24" WS) that work well with MBPs (13" 2.53 model in particular). I'm leaning away from Apple Cinema Displays (due to their lack of support for non-Apple computers which I own. Pl. correct me if I'm wrong in doing so).

I've hooked my Macbook Pro 15" to an external Dell monitor, keyboard and mouse and everything seems to be working fine - I can put the laptop to 'sleep', then wake it up via the external keyboard and then use the external monitor as the main monitor with the laptop screen 'asleep'.
All working fine, but only when I'm using the power adapter. If I try and run from just the battery the laptop keeps going back to sleep. It 'wakes', but after a couple of seconds goes back to sleep.

I was wondering if anybody else is having issues with using 2 external monitors with their M6400?
My configuration:
I have a M6400 Covet, FX3700M, 8GB, Vista Ultimate 64, A01 BIOS, updated drivers... connected to an E/Port Plus 210W Port replicator. I have a 24" Dell 2405FPW external monitor connected to display #1 (1920x1200) and a 19" 1908WFP connected to display #2. (1440 x 900). Both are connected via DVI connectors.
My problem:
The secondary monitor never has problems... However, the main monitor (24" @ 1920x1200) goes all crazy. It has red "dots" that appear all over the screen in dark areas. The bottom of the screen sometimes has horizontal bars. I see red and black vertical bars as well. The screen constantly flickers and the image hangs off the edges many times. If I change the resolution to BELOW 1440 x 900 the screen looks fine. Anything over 1440 x 900 goes crazy. (none of this occurs when using the LCD on the laptop itself)
The 24" monitor is fine. I have swapped cables and they do not help. If I plug up my desktop computer to the montior- it is perfect in 1920x1200. If I plug up my old Dell Precision M90 using it's old E/Port docking station- it too works fine in 1920 x 1200. So it's not the monitor.
Dell support doesn't know what the problem is. They say it's probably a driver issue. (I have the latest driver) They say they will contact me in the future if there is ever a solution and they are going to escalate it to their video hardware team.
Is there anybody else out there experiencing the same issues as me?
If you are running dual monitors successfully with the E/Port Plus 210W, what monitors are you using, at what resolution and what connector? (DVI or that new display port thing) If you aren't using the E/Port Plus 210W- what docking station did dell sell you?
I need to get a resolution to this ASAP.
I've attached two photos taken from my digital camera showing the screen issues.

I am about to take delivery of an XPS M1330 with the 128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS graphics card. When at my desk, I am looking to use the laptop with a Dell 19-inch Widescreen LCD Flat Panel Monitor [url] I am hoping to use the external monitor at the same time as the laptop monitor (for example, Outlook on one screen and Internet Explorer on the other).
- Is this possible? Does the graphics card support multiple monitors / dual view in this way?
The XPS screen resolution is 1280x800 and the resolution of the external monitor is 1440x900.
- Will the fact that the screens have different resolutions cause any problems?

I recently purchased an XPS M1330, with:Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T8300 (2.4GHz/800Mhz FSB/3MB cache)Intel Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X31004 GB DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz (2 DIMMs)Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium
I'll mostly use it for AutoCAD, SketchUp, etc.
I want to purchase a monitor, but I'm not sure about a few details:What's the difference between buying a laptop with an HDMI entry, versus just buying one with a DVI entry (which seem to be cheaper), and get a HDMI-to-DVI cable? What's WXVGA and all those 5-letter-acronyms

I just got my new XPS M1330 With 128MB Graphic Card.
Now when i connect to my XPS M1330 with my External Monitor (Dell 24" 2408WFP) Resolution: 1920X1200
I don't see good sharpness in fonts and image. I have set native resolution that is 1920X1200
I also have Inspiron 1720 (256 Mb Graphic Card)
There its show very fine and sharp fonts and pictures.
I use VGA cable in both the systems.
Now when i talk to Dell Teach Department.
They gave me few reasons as below.
My laptop screen is 13.3" and Monitor screen 24" (i know this is silly reason ) (but i argued with him and then he gave me 2nd reason)My XPS M1330 have lower graphic card (128MB Geforce 8400M GS) that is the reason i can't see clear display. To see clear sharp text and images i need batter graphic card (more then 128MB).
so he said he can't help me. It is not problem of XPS M1330.
Does anyone of you using XPS M1330 with 1920X1200 Resolution?

I have a 4820TG and just bought myself a HP ZR24W. When using the Intel graphic card I have no problems but the ATI-card refuses to give me anything higher than 1600x1200. If I force it into displaying all modes it still doesn't give me anything above 1280x1080 (which doesn't work by the way). The native display of the monitor is 1920x1200. I don't have clone-display activated or anything like that, just the one external monitor. The monitor has the latest INF file and the ATI drivers are the latest that Acer have provided.
I can ad that I am connected through the VGA port and that the Mobility Radeon 5650 is supposed to be able to handle resolutions way beyond 1920x1200.

I'm looking for a 24'' external monitor and was interested in one by Asus:
[url]
Well, technically it's 23.6''...But I noticed the resolution is 1920 x 1080, meaning it is 16:9. I know my MBP has a resolution of 1440x900 making it 16:10. I understand that most widescreen TV's use 16:9, however widescreen laptops use 16:10. Will connecting a 16:9 external monitor to my Macbook Pro have any problems?

Looking for a bit of information, Ive had my M1730 for about 1 1/2-2 years its been preety good (had to replace the PSU) no real problems. I have taken it apart a few times to clean the fans.
Just today I noticed something when I went to plug in an external monitor I only have 1 GPU core.
I only play wow casually and use it for design/work so I haven't noticed the FPS drop lol. I installed new nvidia drivers 3 weeks ago and at that time I had SLI so I must of lost one of my GPUs in that time span T.T
I have re-installed GPU drivers.

I've been reading this forum for a while just havent had a reason to post until now. I got my Studio 1735 in September with an ATI 3650 video card.
Recently i've started using an external monitor also from dell. Rather annoyingly every so often the screens start flickering and it says that the video driver has failed.
After that I get the BSOD. I've tried updating to the newest video drivers on dell site and it didnt change anything.

I was getting frustrated with my external monitor because the screen color was turning dark purplish at times, so I went into Device Manager and deleted both default monitor entries instead of just one under Monitors in hopes that it would've gotten rid of the purple haze so to speak.
I tried unhooking the monitor and unplugging everything before I deleted the default monitor entries in Device Manager, but it didn't get rid of the purple screen.
I have a fairly old notebook Dell Inspiron 4000 with WinMe installed and the display is no longer working assumed due to a bad or broken LCD, which is why I'm using the external monitor.
The external monitor has been working fine for months until it started turning purple on me when it was being used with the notebook. When the monitor is hooked up with my desktop, the screen color is just fine.
The notebook has got a lot of storage on it. During the boot process on the notebook, the external monitor lights up at one point (no longer purplish), but goes blank/dark after a few seconds and says it no longer is getting a signal from the notebook

I've had Windows 7x64 running on my E6400 (w 160m) for 4 months now and frequently use an external monitor (Dell E207FP widescreen 1680x1050).
Up until a few days ago, I could plug the monitor in and it would correctly and automatically scale my desktop to the native 1680x1050 resolution.
All of a sudden (with no driver updates on my part) I can no longer scale any output to this resolution via VGA cable.
I examined the device manager and found that the video driver date was not the Oct09 driver I had expected, but instead something from Jun09. Updated the driver to the most recent dated Dec-14-09 and I am still having the same scaling issue.
