View 3 RepliesHas anyone installed Windows 7 x 64 on your VGN-z540 laptop? I tried nvidia's web site, guru3d, sony etc. but I can't can't find drivers that Windows 7 will accept on my 540 laptop. Every other piece of hardware works including the intel video it natively detected. I can't seem to get it to recognize the nvidia driver. The driver won't install from setup. I can manually try to force it by selecting the device, update drivers, select manually but it says it wasn't the right driver even though it is the 64 bit driver for nvidia and it has the 9300m GS listed many many times in the list.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've recently successfully installed Win7 on my S170 and I'd like to share my experience with other S series owners. The how-to guide is posted on a different forum so I'll post a link to that. I hope it is helpful since Sony will not support this install even though the machine is fully capable. [url]
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Vaio VGN-CS16G/R and why is is that after installing Win7 RTM x64 and installing the necessary drivers, I DON'T see the "adjust brightness slider" on the power options? With my other laptops with the same OS, I can see that slider completely.
Also, I when I install Vaio Launcher which I got from the extracted Sony Notebook Utilities installer, it returns an error of:
" Error Number: 0x80040703
Description: Failed to find DLL function: SnyUtils.SuOpen
Setup will now terminate. "
Are there workarounds on this?
So I guess two questions wrapped into 1:
1. If I clean install Win7 on this Z, what isn't going to work right off the bat and what steps can I take to get it fully functional? I saw a nice guide for the TZ, but not for the Z.
2. Has anyone attempted a straight upgrade to Win7?
I have a fresh copy of win 7 ultimate (legit of course.. got it from a microsoft event).
I have seen a few threads about clean installing vaios (boy do they put a bit of crapware there...) but not sure whats best to do..
I dont think I need/want any of the free apps (are there any good ones?) so I reckon I am going to blast the harddrive (I imaged the whole lot with another backup prog)
Whats the best strategy for this? i.e. whats best for getting drivers etc?
I noticed some files in c:windowsdrivers (an exe and a inf diretory, not sure which is for which) should that contain all I need?
Will I have issues with sony system stuff?
Also what about registering it? I guess there will be no issue as far as warranty is concerned (as said, it is a proper legit win 7)
installing Windows 7 on CR series that I may have missed?
I'm basically trying to get the AV buttons and FN keys to work, everything else seems to be detected by Win7.
SZ Series Windows 7 Clean install (32bit and 64bit)
Primarily for the SZ750, but works most other SZ models.
Yes, it's long, but it overs a lot and makes it very, very simple.
A Note about the "new" Sony utilities on their website.
Don't bother, you end up with FAR less functionality than you will with this guide. Sony simply put up utilities that work with Windows7, they didn't check to see if there is a driver to allow them to work.

32bit 100% working – Use the Vista drivers and Utilities.
64bit 99.9-100% WWAN is possibly working (depends on the model, see below under “issues”)....................
i found this Vaio Z really cheap and want to upgrade the harddrive and RAM (it comes with only 1 GB of ram)
Will all PC 8300 1033 Mhz DDR3 Ram slots work ?
What specifications do i need to look for aobut the harddrive? -can i pop in a SSD drive
At last the day came.. after almost a month of waiting i got my new Z540 - very stylish and nice machine.. but unfortantly i noticed the top-panel (keyboard) seemed un-attached to the buttom.. see the pics:
here you can see the top-panel is unattached.
here you can see the top-panel "wobbles
Someone said the 6xx drivers work fine on the 5xx series if you extract them from the model wrapper, but looking at the drivers, it looks like some hardware is different.
The Sony site only lists a little amount of 64 bit drivers (they didn't used to list any about 6 months ago) but there are some hardware components that don't have 64 bit drivers listed and are different in the 6xx series.
Could I get everything 100% working on a Z540 with Vista or 7 64-bit?
How much battery power can you save with a good SSD for a Z540 ?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have just bought one Sony vaio Z - Model VGN-Z540 NCB( Series Nr: 3109242; PC Nr 28399382)- in Vietnam but it . My question is How can I know it is a real one or refurbished one? what site I can get information for this products?.
View 5 Replies View RelatedThinking of buying a Vaio X from Conics for use in the UK. Anybody who has experience with this? They seem to ship it with an English Windows 7 version, keyboard in their base model is Japanese international however.
Still a good deal it seems at 760GBP+shipping for the Z540 with 64gb SSD.
I'm trying to upgrade my VAIO Z540 from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7, but I am afraid of the incompatibility of the internal parts with the new system.
So, I would like to inquire if anyone has tried before and what results?
Also for the drivers, because I tried to search for it but unfortunately I have not found it. So I'll be grateful if you could help me to find them.
normally, when the battery power is low, PCs should go to 'standby/sleep mode' and save all current tasks in Memories. PCs will wake up and restore all previous tasks after plugging in AC power supply.
however, my z540 is weird, when the battery power is low, it does go to standby/sleep mode, but then it will wake up itself and go to standby/sleep mode again..Over And Over... until it runs out of all battery power. so all current opened operations will be lost, the only thing I can do to prevent form losing my job is to connect AC power supply immediately before the battery power is used up.
does any z owner encounter the same situation as mine?

I guess I've got a year (minus a week) to send in for repair if it continues to go blinky, and I'll be checking with my seller on their return policy. Overall I'm happy with my Z, but this combined with the battery drain issue (I loose 10% overnight) is making me regret buying VAIO.
The problem got waaay worse today, less than two weeks of use Now the whole screen goes completely black except 4 or 5 of the backlights and others that flicker randomly (see picture below). I can temporarily get it back to normal if I reboot or even close the lid. But if I change the brightness to anything but 100%, then whole screen goes dark.
what sort of memory should i purchase for the machine? i know it's ddr3 but what pin count?

Problem with my 2 week old sony vgn-z540 laptop.
Heres the problem:
When I try to use the brightness level in between LOW and HIGH, my LCD backlight would go off, and the screen would be dark and almost not visible at all. There are also vertical bars at random spots, stretching from the top of the screen to the bottom of the screen. I can only use it with either LOW setting or HIGH setting, nothing in between.
This problem just started on its own. I have not installed anything such as drivers or programs. No updates(was updated after the problem occured to try to fix it).
I love this laptop to death and has been the best laptop in the past 15 years. I would hate to see it go so I need this fixed.
I will update later with pictures when it gets dark here b/c the pictures now are not showing up with the bars.
I want to swap out the hard drives on it and it doesn't have an easy access panel on the bottom for the hard drive.
Anyone know where I can find a step by step procedure on how to replace the hard drive?
I am considering the two following models: SR290 and Z540. My question relates to the overall build quality of these models as well as battery life with the extended battery.
Basically Im deciding between these 2 and a lenovo. The lenovo is heavier than both, is well made, and has ridiculous battery life. Just curious as to how the sony's stand up over time.
I want to format.. and I like everything to be clean, like, really clean.
Never dealt with HP computers before so I want to be sure..
HP has a separate RECOVERY partition, so I made the 3 recovery discs and a backup of all the Driver folders. (C:/SwSetup)
I figure I could format and delete the additional partition. (make a bigger one later on)
Now that Ive inserted my Win7 DVD and I need to select a partition to install 7 on.. all of the sudden Windows sees 4 partitions in total:
Is it safe to carelessly delete every single one of 'm .. merging them into 1?
And later on creating another one being that I want 2 in total.
Just received my XPS 14 with Windows 8 pre-installed. I would like to use Windows 7 on the laptop instead. I was able to install Windows 7 just fine but I am not able to get SRT working on there. I have the Intel Rapid Storage Technology application installed but the Accelerate button is not showing up for me.
When installed Windows 7 with SRT enabled in the BIOS and loaded the driver so that both drives (mSATA and SATA) are seen. I installed the OS on the non-SSD SATA drive and left the mSATA alone. After installing Windows 7, I loaded the drivers and application software for RST but the Accelerate button still doesn't show up. Both drives shows up in RST application. how to get the Accelerate button to show up so that I may use the mSATA SSD drive for caching?
Is there any possibility to interact with ePower in Windows 7 clean installation? In original Vista that came wit notebook it had tray icon, but when I install this app in Win7 from provided archive (ePower_Acer_4.07.3008_Win7x86x64), there is no tray nor any launcheable app, even through there is epowertray.exe running in memory. An when I press ePower button (green battery with leaf), nothing actually happens, only indication is that icon is green lit and if I install launchmanager, there is visual indication on display too...

I do have a Win7 CD already from my other computer, but that one is Professional. Will that allow me to install Home?
I've recently formatted my hard drive and put my own copy of Win7 on my Thinkpad Edge 14 (0579-A62). There's no more recovery partition. After being surprised that Win7 didn't have any built in drivers for the display or WiFi, I plugged an ethernet cable in and went to the Lenovo support site. I tried all of the Networking: WLAN drivers but none of them let wireless work. I installed the Intel PROSet software and it just says "Driver is not installed" so I'm assuming it doesn't have anything to do with the WiFi key on the keyboard.
View 6 Replies View Relatedour laptop keeps throwing a flakey when trying to install Win7 Ultimate over the current crappy Vista OS.
Laptop passed the compatibility checker no probs & has all the updates installed, but every time we try, we get either
1. windows 7 install failure message then black screen with cursor
or
2. straight to black screen with cursor.
This is even after changing to the low res setting that is mentioned so often when googling the issue.
I've looked on the Acer site, but it says if I got it from pc world I should take it up with them?
Anyone here have any advice to get it to work, or should we just smash the laptop off a wall?

After trying multiple times (both automatically and manually) to install the Nvidia drivers it shows an error saying "you must install an Intel driver first". I realize this is the HP forum, but i've tried contacting Intel with no luck on top of trying every Intel driver that looks even remotely relevant. (most of which error while installing mentioning my computer lacks the requirements for the install).

I've tried updating the drivers automatically through windows on top of disable/uninstall and restart, but the same problem keeps arising.
if I can clean install Vista 32-bit or Win7 32-bit on current FW laptop, such as FW355 or FW378? FW comes pre-installed with Vista Home Premium 64-bit.
I want to buy FW, however I am using an application that runs only on 32-bit Windows. If I cannot run 32-bit Windows on FW it is kind of a deal breaker for me.
