I just got a new VGN-NW230 and the wireless seems very slow and has had problems connecting at times. The laptop has an Atheros AR9285 (it's N and the specs say it's 150 Mbps capable) and my router is a Netgear WNDR3700. I've updated the drivers on the Atheros and the router firmware is up-to-date.
The card only reports connecting at 65 Mbps. I have another laptop with an Intel 5100 card and it connects anywhere between 150-300 Mbps. For a "real world" test, I compared the speeds on speedtest.net. The Atheros (Sony) is getting at most 1.5 Mbps down, while the laptop with the Intel 5100 gets 17 Mbps down
I have an edge 530, i've had it about 2 weeks running windows 7 64.I have found that on default settings its fairly slow at waking up, i made one change which was to the wireless card, i unticked the allow my system to turn off wireless to save power (so it stays on). this seems to have made an instant difference and the laptop now wakes a lot faster. Â The problem now is with having that option unticked, when my laptop does wake up the wireless is off when it wakes and will not turn back on, i have to manually turn it on. If i leave the power save option ticked for the wireless card it does auto connect when my laptop wakes.Seems a little odd as i thought unticking the option to allow my laptop to turn wireless off means it should just stay on but it seems to be having the opposite effect.all i wanted was for my laptop to wake faster and the wireless either stay on or auto connect after it wakes.
First of all I have a dead pixel right in the middle of the screen - will be taking this up with Dell tommorrow as its really off putting especially on brand new laptop.
My second issue is with wireless - did have problems initially with wireless disconnects and genrally slow speeds
Im not entirely sure but removing Mcafee seemed to work with the disconnects at least - load of rubbish imo
Now my only other major issue is with wireless speeds on the 1703 card
I seem to max out at about 45mb on all broadband speed tests - while on another laptop I get the full speeds of 80mb on the same server at the same location
Im only getting a link speed of 72Mbps in the networking tab of Task Manager and this does seem rather slow - the other laptop gets 450Mbps (better wireless card - to go with my Asus N66U Router)
Anyway my thought process is that the 1703Â wireless card is not up to much - I understand that the 1703 card is wireless and bluetooth - with I think 1 antenna for bluetooth and one for wireless connected to the wireless card.
Now I dont use bluetooth much if at all - so does it make sense to buy just a wireless card and connect the two antennas to the card and therefore losing bluetooth connectivity but gaining better wireless connection

Recently bought a Acer Aspire Nitro v15 with windows 8.1 with a qualcomm atheros ar5bwb222 wireless network card. The connection is really unstable and often disconnects and have very few bars. This is not from the router since the connection on my phone and other computers are fine. The connection (when i have it) is also really slow compared to when i use my phone on the same network. I tried updating the drivers but it says my latest drivers are installed. Could this be a Windows 8.1 problem? this is my first time owning a windows 8.1 computer.
as of 2 hours ago my high speed has been stuck at 1 Mbps, much slower then its usual 65+ that I've had over the last 6 days since I got my laptop.
I'm thinking I may have received a faulty wireless card, since when I checked my wired desktop downstairs it's still at it's usual 100Mbps, and my sisters Inspiron 1420 has its normal high speed.
Now when I restart my wireless adapter (Intel 5100) the speed fluctuates between 4-38 Mbps for about a minute before dropping- and staying at 1 Mbps once again.
I checked if there are any computers stealing my wireless connection just in case, and as I thought no one is .....

So a while back I upgraded the the 4965AGN in my SZ750N to an Intel 5200, since that day, B&G has been noisy. I managed to arrange the antenna connections in such a way as to minimize it to within tolerable limits. I also talked to some experts and they said it wasn't going to hurt anything if there was a bit of static so I left it.
I have known for a while that is was the white antenna lead that was causing the static. Unfortunately disconnecting it caused a drop in signal. While working on my Windows 7 guide I had a problem and had to open the laptop. While doing so I noticed the white lead and the antenna it attached to. I hadn't ever really noticed where it sat before. Sony couldn't have hardly chosen a worse place for it.
Sony decided the best place for it, and I assume this is because they merely upgraded the old 2 wire wireless to 3 by adding this, is almost under the power button. Right next to... a speaker. The lead runs along a Speaker wire and puts the antenna right next to it. See pics 1 & 2................
I have Compaq Presario CQ42-273TU NBPC. Â In my laptop , if i play video , it becomes very slow. After video becomes slow, everything else on the laptop becomes slow. recently i gave laptop for service also, then also i have issue with video.
When I try to rip a CD, I'm getting some very slow rip speeds. Here's what I'm using:

Well, this morning working in the TZ wasn't at all the same..even the most simple task like opening the control panel it makes for ever...Is very strange, just from today! It doesn't even open some things as disk defragmenter, is incredibly slow, what can I do?
I checked the task manager, the processes are 64 but the strange is that the CPU Usage is stuck to 100%..
I own the VPCCW27FX from Best Buy. Last night, after burning a DVD, I experienced the blue screen of death. I noticed that my DVD writer only burns at 2.4x speed. I called Sony Customer Support and they could not provide me the with the optical speed of my drive and could not help me increase my burning speed. To the other people who own this computer or a similar model, what is your drive speed? Is there something wrong with my computer? It takes me 23 minutes to burn a DVD, a lot slower than my old Toshiba laptop.
i had this notebook from quite a while which i bought from ebay.
The configuration is as follows:-
Sony Vaio VGN-SZ58GN Intel core 2 duo T7700, 2.4ghz Ram= 2gb, Windows Vista Business and 160 gb hard drive.
Before it use to run pretty good but now the notebook is driving me nuts as it gets very slow and lags after running for a while. I had the latest version of avg installed into it and it does not have any viruses or spywares. I have never opened any website which suspects me, all i use it for checking my yahoo email and listening to music or movies.
Sometimes it works pretty good but after a while all of a sudden it starts lagging on me and gets so slow that i have to restart it. Takes a long time to boot as well and at times after restarting the problem remains the same. I don't play any high graphic games or any kinda games on it, just surf internet and with such a high configuration its running as a old pentium 1.
When I am working in speed more for a while, when I try drag around windows i get this really annoying lag.
The window will kind of sputter as I drag it... but if i do it a few times then the dragging gets smooth again. Its as if the nvidia chip needs to wake up and run fast or something. It feels like garbage
I'm the proud (?) owner of a new Sony Z117 bought in Australia. Not sure if it's the same specs as elsewhere in the world so: i7 M620, 2.67Ghz, 8GBram, GeForce GT 330M, 250GB SSD, 1080 HD screen.
My main question is why is this machine so slow at playing 3D games? Not that I have much time for games these days, but when you buy the most expensive laptop on the market you expect to be able to play a game on FULL 3D settings!
I have Just Cause 2 running on my HP DV7-2111x running very smoothly - admittedly not on high 3d settings and at 1600x900 resolution.
But the Sony z117 with an i7 only manages 15FPS on medium settings. On full settings it runs about 10FPS - using the inbuilt benchmark.
I've done a bit of research and found that the graphics card is really second rate in this machine. But then I looked into it further and found that the sony ships with very old drivers, with NVIDIA offering much improved drivers (with countless performance improvements and bug fixes), BUT NOT TO SONY USERS.
Sony it seems does not want us using the newest drivers from NVIDIA, but do not offer their own update.
Anyway, after hours more research I realised that with some modification of the .inf file on the driver you can use the NVIDIA drivers. This improved the benchmark FPS to about 20 on medium settings.
I have seen on several forums people averaging 30-60 FPS on JC2. Are their graphics cards really that much better than the Sony's?
I really don't see the point of an i7 with 1080 screen if you're going to team it up with an average video card!? What is i7 for if not for intensive graphical applications?
I'm using Windows 7 on my Sony Vaio Z21MN/B and it is slow. Whenever I'm doing two things at a time, it is lagging. When I move windows, its often slow and you have to stop working for a second or so. I am wondering whether the graphic drivers could be the reason for this.
I'm currently using the graphic drivers version 8.15.11.8684 which is the current driver on the sony homepage.
I'm wondering whether there are newer drivers and where I could get them from?
When I open an audio file with Windows Media Player, it takes about 3 seconds before it plays. The same thing happens whenever I jump to a different part of the track. It has been like this since I first got it.
I am having this problem with my USB flash drive (USB HDD powered from the USB itself seems to work fine). My flash drives are not operational after waking up from sleep in Vista. After a minute or so, it finally goes through, and it starts working. But right after sleep, for what seems to be an insanely long time, it doesn't respond at all. If I reconnect the flash drive, it starts working instantly.
I have a Sony Vaio VGN N130G with a Pro/Wireless driver.
I searched for a driver called Intel® PROSet/Wireless driver. This driver pulls down 2-3 bars of wireless signal while my Sony Vaio with Pro Wireless driver only pulled down 0-1 bars intermittently.
I'm having issues with my SR420's wireless connection. I'm running Vista (64-bit) and my wireless adapter is the Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN. My router is a Linksys WRT54G.
The problem: My connection overall is flaky, unless I'm within 20 feet of the router.
The connection drops intermittently, but when I'm able to maintain one, my system reports speeds of 1-2 Mbps.
I'm confident the router isn't the issue because I have two other laptops in the house (both running Vista—one 32-bit, another 64-bit) that have no issues connecting or maintaining a connection.
Both are able to maintain speeds of 54 Mbps (I've run speed tests on all three systems to verify).
Has anyone with the SZ series got the wireless switching utility to work on windows 7. I got everything else to work except that. I tried both the vista driver and xp.
I don't use bluetooth so i prefer to turn it off. But when it's disabled the blue bluetooth light is still lit
Ive had my FZ190 for about 2 years. Every time I move my laptop the wireless indications on the front will turn off, thus loosing my internet. Then I have to fiddle with the wireless switch on the front to get it to reconnect
I recently got a sony vaio CW at bestbuy yesterday. The link for it is below. Brought it home and started using it.
Everything worked perfectly for the first hour, and then the wireless just went out. It will no longer allow me to search for wireless networks. Two other laptops in my house are working fine so its not the router.
The wireless switch on the front is ON, however the little light is not lit. When I go to the SmartWi Connection Utility in the taskbar, it only lists an on/off option for Bluetooth, no Wifi option
i've been using the VPCZ1, and everything has been working great. but recently, i've been having this problem where out of the blue, my internet access gets cut off. And I cannot reconnect to the connect because it shows that there are no available networks. I have to restart the computer to get it to fix itself. 2nd time it happened was today.
My new Sony VAIO SR 390 arrived yesterday. When I turn on the computer, restart, awake from sleep, etc, I have to manually disconnect and reconnect to my wireless network. If I don't, I have the little yellow triangle in the tray saying "unidentified network" and the internet doesn't work.
I have turned the wireless switch on and off, disabled and enabled the connection, updated the driver, and changed the power settings in the device manager. All of this has not helped.
Other than that, I have had no problems and I'm very happy with the computer. I haven't noticed the battery drain issue either.
