Acer :: 5930G Cooling Solution
Nov 3, 2008
I got myself 5930G a week ago.
I removed all of the unnecessary programs that Acer put in (they do make decent laptops but really overbload the OS with stupidities) and optimized Vista as much as I could (which is working nicely if i do say so myself ... but I'm still considering on going back to XP SP3 until Windows 7 comes out.).
Right ... I also played Mass Effect for a while on the laptop (maxed out at native res of 1280x800 works without a problem).
Now the only thing is, I'd like to reduce the temperatures of the laptop.
The idle CPU temp is at about 52 degrees, while under load reaches about 72 degrees Celsius (which is pretty good considering the casing).
I will buy myself the ZALMAN ZM-NC2000B cooler ... but what I would also love to do is to undervolt both the CPU and the GPU.
I'm aware the RMClock is not exactly effective when it comes to P7350 cpu.
I tried to undervolt it last night, and as much as I reduced the current going to the multipliers, the temperatures remained the same under stress for prolonged periods of time.
So ... until I find a way to undervolt the cpu and get myself the forementioned cooler, I'd like to undervolt the gpu (9600m GT GDDR3)
If it's possible (and I know it is), I need to know of programs that can be used to acomplish this.
As much as I like my new laptop, it would be nice to further extend it's lifespan (even though it's brand new) and reduce the heat output.
I was also thinking on getting the thermal paste and applying it to cpu/gpu.
Although I'm not sure I want to go ahead with it as I don't want to void the warranty.
how to overclock the cpu/gpu in question without significant gains in temps.

this is my HD it was prepartitioned into these 4 Primary Partitions (i did resize C and extended the D partition) any way i know the 1st partition is the recovery but what about that last one?
now i wanna install windows 7 beta to try it out for real (I did try it in VM) so i want to dual boot it with the pre installed Vista Home premium SP1, the problem is i can't create any partitions bcuz i already have 4 primary partitions.
with Paragon Partition manager i can convert the D partition to Logical partition but will my data be safe ... i wanna be sure about that first.

I have a 5930g and I'm thinking of going from my Vista home premium to the Windows 7 beta, has anyone else tried it? I'm mostly thinking of issues with the media touch buttons, wireless, touchpad and the battery settings.

The settings are "IDE" in BIOS for the HDD.
Bios Ver: v1.21 (got that version by default)
So I got REAL problems when trying to install Win XP Pro SP2 on my brand new Acer Aspire 5930G-733G25Mn.
First I tried to slipstream the ahci driver and making a custom XP disk, that didn't work, I got BSOD before the first part (blue background and white text) of the Windows installation.
Ok so I bought a USB-floppy only for this problem and loaded "f6flpy32_85.zip" onto a floppydisk and pressed "F6" to load SATA drivers under the Win XP installation boot.
EDIT: I extracted the files onto a floppy, there are no .zip file on the floppy only the contents of that .zip file.
I then chose "Intel(R) ICH8M-E/ICH9M-E SATA RAID Controller" then I can get past the "first phase" of the Win XP installation.
BUT when I get to the end of the first installation with an automatic reboot within 15sec or enter to do it directly the following happends:
(I remove the floppy before rebooting).......................

I got myself the Acer Aspire 5930G this past Sunday. I can also mention that my friend bought the exact same computer just a couple hours before, from the same store here in Stockholm, Sweden.
The problem now is that the built in speakers make a fizzing, or I don't know exactly how to describe it, sound, when I play a song for example. The sound became more obvious when having a voiceconversation through Msn with a friend and playing musicvideos on youtube.
Now, my friend appeared to have the same problems with his speaker, just slightly less obvious. It bugged me enough to make a trip back to the store in order to set things straight. Listening to the Demoex at the store, the speakers were even worse, so I just had to accept the fact that "speakers on laptops generally suck"...
I still can't though, and I'd like to know how you experience your built-in speakers, are they "crystal clear" no matter how high of a volume you play (75% and up)?

i recently installed WinXP on my Acer 5930G (went from vista). i managed to find all the drivers (including the ICH9M SATA ACHI-mode driver) except one called the SM Bus Controller which is showing up in device manager with a little yellow ! symbol. Does anyone know where I can find this driver? the Intel website and their chipset identifier tool seems to be quite useless. The chipset identifier can't identify anything except the I/O controller (82801MB ICH9M SATA AHCI-mode) which was installed from the '32-bit floppy configuration files'
5930G Specs:
C2D P7350
3GB RAM
Geforce 9600M GT
Intel 965 Express (i think)
does anyone know which SM Bus Controller driver i need for XP?

I would like to know where i can get windows XP drivers for Acer Aspire 5930G. I want to dual boot XP with the Vista that came preinstalled.
I have two partitions on factory setup: one for VISTA OS and the other is labelled as DATA. I thought of formatting the second partition and installing XP on it. Is this possible? Would a boot menu be created? Or is there any other sequence in which i should install this.
The Specification is as follows:
Intel Core2Duo P8400 2.26 GHz
512 MB nVidia GeForce 9600M GT
4GB DDR2
250 GB HDD
and the rest...

So I wanted to try out WinXP, to see the performance difference.
At first, the WinXP setup wasn't able to see the HDD. So I changed the SATA Controller Bios mode to IDE mode. (was AHCI for Vista).
I managed to install so have a dual booted system. However I can't use IDE mode for Vista. (must switch SATA bios each time).
Everything installed fine. Even got 3dMark06 increase of 150 points (not much lol). Oh and CrystalMark of 100K instead of 90K on Vista.
But I'd like to use AHCI mode for WinXP. Saw a link in a WinXP 5930g Guide, however that link was out of date.
The driver was called: "Intel(R) ICH9M M-E Family 4 Port SATA AHCI Controller - 2929 Driver".

Computer: Acer 5930G-733G25Mn
Just finished installing all drivers in Win XP but I can't get the HDMI audio to work.
When I go to "Control Panel" then "Sounds and Audio" and change to "NVIDIA HDMI Audio" the volumebar is down at its lowest and the entire bar is "greyed out". Also if I play some music I hear a "thumping" sound from my TV:s speakers.
The driver I am using is 1.0.0.30 taken directly from the drivercd that I burned out together with recoverydiscs so its an "orginal" Acer (although Vista) driver.
I have also tried 1.0.0.26 to no luck.
My graphic driver is 180.70 with the modded .inf from Laptopvideo2go.
The other device is "Realtek HD Audio output" and it works fine, that driver ought to be me primary audio driver if I'm not misstaken.

I own a 5930G for almost a year.It has an NVidia 9600M GT and it says "1080p full hd" on a sticker.
3 questions:
Using Vlc media player,I have minor sound problems with 720p .mkv files.Particularly, every 3-4 seconds, the sound seems discontinuous for an instant. Is there something I can do about it?
How can I check if I have the latest graphics card drivers and if not, update them?
This and my former aspire acer model, can only burn a few brands of cd/dvds without error.Lots of common brands, like TDK,philips etc get a failure while burning always at the time that the burning process is beyond 80% complete.I start to think that this is a common problem for acer laptops. Can you suggest brands of cd's/dvd's that work well?in my former acer aspire model,"that's write" were the only ones that I could find that worked 100% of the time. And I had tried about 12 known brands. In my 5930g model,I haven't tried to test a lot of brands yet,but the "that's write" brand doesn't work any more.I have burned less than 10 cds and the problem occured right from the beginning.
my battery life is reduced to a mere 30 seconds. Is there a way to recalibrate it?can't seem to find it in the acer e-power management

I've got problem with my webcam. She worked well when I had got linux Fedora 9 and preinstalled MS Windows Vista. Later I changed Vista 32 bit on Vista 64 bit and I long didn't used the webcam. Later I updated my bios under MS Windows Vista x64 (to v1.19 earlier I had got v1.15). One day I wanted to make a foto with webcam but with no success because Suyin application say Camera not found. Webcam "Vendor ID" is 0c45 and "Product ID" is 63e0. These values indicate on Sonix Webcam but I'am sure that I've got Suyin Webcam and that before I had corect Vendor ID and Product ID for Suyin Webcam. I want to add that i have tried to downgrade to older bios but it makes no difference. I want my Webcam back.

I have got a Acer 5930G John Lewis model. I flashed my Nvidia 9600M GT 512mb to overclock it. Everything was ok initially and I was able to play most games maxxed out.
After about 9 months things started going wrong. Initially the laptop would only crash when playing a heavy game such as FEAR or crysis for a long period of time. Then as time went on, the laptop become less tolerant to any GPU processing and now crashes even crashes when playing Quake Live or CS 1.6.
Migrating to Win 7 temporarily fixed the problem, but then things quicky went wrong again.
Before making any modifications, I had backed up all my files on a USB drive as I had no optical media at the time, unfortunately, the drive was placed into a mac by a friend by accident and subsequently formatted. OOPS.
So, I have lost all my original NVflash files and Im stuck with a 9600M that can't take it anymore. Is there anyway I can reclock the timings on the Gfx card or am I screwed?

I decided to restore my aspire 5930g laptop to factory defaults, and started out with creating the restoration discs. At this point, i wasn't really aware that one could restore from the harddrive.
So i booted up the discs and started the restoration process. But now, the dialog tells me to insert the third disc, while i only have two. What should i do? I could try to kill the restoration process and start over from the harddrive, but im afraid to harm the system.

recently bought an acer aspire 5930 with an Nvidia geforce 9600M gt,3GB RAM,and an intel core 2 duo @ 2.00 Ghz.
When I play games I often notice annoying small horizontal wave-like distortions even at the intro videos of some games(Pro Evolution Soccer 09 for example).
I read that it might have been V-sync that cause these horizontal distortions, however turning it off doesn't help at all.
Vertical movement in the scenery seems to cause these wave like effects to occur and I really don't know what do to, I've tried mostly everthing.
I am using Dox's 180.7 drivers, forcing V-sync off etc.

I just reinstalled my Acer Aspire 5930G (844G32BN) with Vista Home Premium. Everything looks fine except the wireless connection. My computer cannot find any wireless networks (although my other notebook finds all 3 around me). It looks like as if the notebooks WiFi signal would not work.
Could anyone tell me what exact drivers the original installation have? I tried the Intel ProSet/Wireless drivers now. The WiFi led flashes, but cannot find any networks. With the original installation I had no problem regarding the WiFi.

Since my laptop gets quite hot and my nvidia 8 serie is dying slowy I was thinking, since I only use my laptop as a dekstop replacement anyway, of unscrewing the bottom of my laptop so the laptopcooler would have more effect.
My question is:
is this a good idea? or will my computer become polluted with dust which will make my hardware components defect?

I just replaced the T5550 cpu with a T9500 (SLAYX) in my Acer Aspire 5920. I cleaned and applied Arctic Silver 5 to the cpu and gpu. It started right up, but now it seems like the cooling fan doesn't ever shut down. When the temp. hits about 55 deg C.
(according to speedfan 4.39), the fan runs at full speed. With the T5550, it would need to reach about 65 deg before running full speed, but not for long.
I have system BIOS v.1.3810
Is it possible that I did a poor job of applying the Arctic Silver 5? Any settings that
I need to change for the fan to stop continuously running?

I've bought my Acer Aspire 5570 with T2450 Core Duo 2.0 CPU and Intel GMA950 Video 1.5 years ago and back then I wasn't into fiddling around with it, plus I also had warranty on it and didn't feel like voiding that.
But lately it has been pissing me off, because if I actually use it for anything other than browsing text-based web pages it gets hot. And if put under max load after 10minutes you run the risk of burning your hand if you touch the laptop underneath (75C according to RMClock Utility).
But now, since warranty is long over i decided to see what I can do to improve cooling.
After spending a good amount of time looking for service manual I found one on ed2k network and set it download. Eager to get the things rolling I took it apart blindly (wasn't hard at all) and of course, right when I was done with the last screw the service manual finished downloading... *sigh* (To save you from the same fate I've uploaded the service manual at the end of this post.)
I have cleaned the heatsinks (there wasn't much hair, since i used to blow it out with compressed air occasionally), reapplied thermal paste and then I noticed that about 3/4 of air vent on the bottom of the laptop (where air gets sucked in for cooling) was blocked by a piece of removable plastic, whereas the fan was big enough to use the whole vent......................
