Acer :: TEST CHART: Power Consumption Of Various Activites On Timeline 1810T
Feb 4, 2010
Just did some tests on my new laptop:
(No, I don't write this software -- but some people are mighty interested in detailed power consumption statistics)
The BatteryBar Pro software has a Watt-Meter...
I decided to play with the power consumption of my new Timeline 1810T 11.6" laptop (Core2 Duo ULV 1.3 Ghz, 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD). These are really high performance laptops in a netbook-size form factor.

Just got my new 1810t delivered today. Mine is the one with the SU4100.
Notice that at idle it goes to 5.5-6w. Great. After anything intensive I do it always drops down to that level. However, when i watch DXVA x264 accelerated video in MPC or WMP, i notice that after quitting my idle power consumption jumps an average of two watts. The only way to get back to normal idle power consumption is by putting the laptop into sleep mode, then waking it back up again.
Watching the same x264 video in VLC which does not support DXVA doesnt result in the increase in idle power consumption.
Watching DXVA accelerated youtube HD content with flash 10.1 doesnt increase power consumption either.
Running the latest (15.16.2.64.1986) video drivers, but the same problem was present on the stock drivers that came with the laptop. Version of those drivers was unknown. Wattage was measured using both batterymon, and batterybar.

I actually have a Gateway EC1815U and heard it is identical to the acer 1810t.
In the Gateway bios (insyde) I see an option for a device on IDE1. IDE0 is used for the internal hard drive.
I am wondering if there is either
1- a way to expose the 2nd IDE externally to use like a eSATA device with it
or
2 - Be able to install a 2nd IDE device like a SSD to use that interface
I'm wondering out loud and checking here to see if anyone can offer some advice.

I recently bought a 5810 and Im having a far lower battery time then I expected. Even when running everything at maximum power saving in W7 I get no more then 3-3.5 hours or so. This is a huge bummer for me as it was the main reason I bought the laptop.

This is the follow-up thread to Phil's great Timeline Tweaks thread.
I've decided to leave out 13"+ timelines for now and focus on the 11.6" models.
3810T, 4810T, 5810T and Travelmate users are welcome to create dedicated tweaks threads.
Some tweaks in this thread work for other timelines too, though.

Anyone who has compare the two?
Similiar price, similiar specs, similiar 3 pound weight, similiar form factor, same 11.6" screen, except for CPU and graphics.
I've got an Acer Aspire One 11.6" netbook, which I had to purchase in an emergency to replace a failing laptop two days before travel. It's great, except it's a bit too slow. I managed to make it perform miracles such as smooth YouTube playback and 100% stutterfree AVCHD video file playback (from my Panasonic camera), but I need to use heavyweight apps now, plus a little lightweight video editing (just trimming clips) and much faster copying and synchronization of big files between computers over Ethernet (gigabit) and faster USB performance. And possibly, occasional Blu-Ray quality playback, which both alternatives can do.
So.... I'm looking for a full-performance laptop in the same form factor, and it has boiled down to the Acer Timeline 1810T (SU7300 Core2 Duo version and Intel GMA4500), and the Acer Ferrari One (with the AMD Turion64 X2 and Radeon HD3200). Some love/hate the Ferrari branding, but I don't really care about the Ferrari branding, however red is my favourite color, and is the color of my ao751h anyway.
Which CPU and graphics perform better than the other?
I would bet the 1810T with the Core2 Duo would have better CPU scores, while the Ferrari One would have the better graphics score (being a Radeon HD3200).

Today i went to a computer store to check the 2 above mentioned laptops.
1. Gateway EC1815u
[url]
2. Acer Timeline 1810T
[url]
Both are identical in screen size, weight, features... The only difference is that the Gateway has 500gb Hdd whereas the Acer Timeline has 320gb.
So i was deciding to buy the Gateway however on close inspection of both the laptops side by side i found that the Acer Lcd was slightly brighter and more crisper than the Gateway Lcd.
At this point in time i searched the internet but could not find any reviews for the gateway laptop though there are quite a few for the Acer Timeline which all praise the Acer's Lcd Screen Quality.
Now i'm totally confused as to which one to buy...? I was more keen on the EC1815u since it has 500gb hdd compared to 1810T which only has a 320gb hdd but i found the 1810t screen quality to be better than EC1815u...!
1. Has anyone compared both these laptops screen..? I was told that Acer owns Gateway and that the EC1815u is the exact copy of 1810T then how come the screen quality of both the Laptops is different...?

I just got the Aspire 1810t last night and upgraded my OS to windows 7 ultimate 64 bit.
I finally got all the right drivers on here and launch manager which fixed my Fn keys, however the Fn+F1 still doesn't work, that is what launches the power manager.
I'm only getting 5 hrs battery life without it, how to reinstall the epower manager and empowering technology software...

I am looking for a laptop with a matte display (at least 15.4'') and low power consumption, and so far I've selected these ones:
- Latitude E5500 (WXGA anti-glare)
- Latitude E6500 (Led backlit)
- Vostro 1720 (WXGA anti-glare)
(always with P8600)
I really like the Vostro 1720 features, but I am a bit worried about its power consumption (having a 17'' display, a NVIDIA video card, ...). There are very complete reviews for both Latitude models here:

The Studio XPS 13 should have a lower power consumption than the m4400 because of the small screen size(13"vs15"), lower power CPU(TDP of 25 vs 35), and a lower power graphics card (9200M vs 770M)...
Notebookcheck reports that the XPS 13 lasts 3hrs20min on idle, no wifi, and min brightness and 1hr10min under full load and max brightness...
In contrast they also report that the m440 will last 4hrs31min and 1hr35min respectively...

I have an Acer Timeline 4810T, and recently, I have been having a really weird issue with power. When I first got the laptop, I would plug in the power adapter and it would immediately start charging. Now, when I plug it in, it takes 30 seconds to a minute for the adapter to be recognized and the laptop to start charging. I'll plug it in and nothing will happen, and then after a while, the green battery off icon will appear on the screen and the charging light will come on.
Its a really weird issue, and I really hope is not going to get worse. I already had to return one of these because keys on the keyboard stopped working. I really don't want to have to send this one back.

I have a Dell Latitude D800 that will not power on. When the power button is pushed the green power indicator light comes on, the CDROM spins for a moment, but then nothing happens, there is no BIOS information displayed, no power on self test, no Dell logo. It just sits there with the green power light on.I have tried removing the power & battery then pressing the power button for 10 seconds (actually, I have tried as long as 60 seconds). I have tried to turn on with the power connected but not the battery. I have tried removing the connector cable for the power button and the connector cable for the display and then reseating them.

Has anyone noticed that Optical Drive Power Management occassionally stop working, i.e., pressing the eject button on your laptop, Windows does not detect your optical drive? Does anyone know how to get Windows to detect the drive, short of restarting?
(my OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 64. I am using Optical Drive Power Management for Windows Vista Home Premium 64 - I just installed the program in compatibility mode. Before anyone suggests this is the cause of the problem, I was experiencing this same problem in Vista Home Premium 64 and was hopeful that Windows 7 would fix it...)

My Bluetooth keyboard goes to sleep after a period of idle and it takes 15 seconds for the Acer Aspire 1810T to wake up and notice the Bluetooth keypresses.
However, I found out my Bluetooth keyboard works reliably when I have a second Bluetooth device connected and active at the time (such as either a headset or bluetooth tethering to a cellphone as modem), the computer doesn't have a 15 second lag in noticing the Bluetooth keyboard again - the keyboard works almost right away even after being unused for sometime.
So that means the culprit is in the power management on the Acer Bluetooth module. Is there a way to force the Bluetooth module to never go to sleep? Any checkbox somewhere, a register setting? Even going as far to purchase a different Bluetooth driver? Or any other option? Sometimes the sleep is useful, but it definitely isn't useful with the Bluetooth keyboard. This problem does not happen if I use an external Bluetooth dongle.
(With BatteryBar Pro, I notice that power consumption falls suddenly whenever the Bluetooth module goes to sleep when the keyboard goes idle for more than 30 seconds, and at this point, it has difficulty 'waking up' when I start typing on the Bluetooth keyboard. But the problem also still happens when the laptop is plugged in!)

Only couple of days back I have installed HP2545 printer on my PC. I do not know wheher this has something to do with present status of laptop. Also I am using Kaspersky internet security 2014. I recently bought a N-wireless gigabit router. It is DLink DIR-655. It is reporting the connect to my 1810T AGN wireless is using G. I'm wondering why if my computer supports N and the router supports N, why am I not getting N?
When I checked properties of my wireless card in my 1810T it tells me it is a Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN. If I check the properties and it shows N is enabled. However, under Wireless Mode it is set to 802.11a/b/g. Also, while there are several options that include a, b, and g, there is no option for N.

I've found out that the webcam is a Suyin, I installed drivers from acer website.. and the result is still terrible.
The webcam is so slow, like 1 fps. Even when not in videocall and using acer crystal eye webcam to set it, it's slow, pixelated and sloow.. I don't mind about the colour, yellowish but adjustable, but I do mind about the fps and quality.
I guess it's a driver matter, because the driver installed is the microsoft's standard one. But I couldn't manage to get better results, also some of the settings like auto and white balance or camera control are not selectable.

After a few days of happy 1810T ownership, the computer has begun to have a problem where the screen locks up tight. Nothing revives the computer except holding the power button down to force a powerdown. It reboots OK but shows the screen to optionally boot into Safe Mode.
The screen is a random color when this happens: sometimes green, blue or red. It is NOT the traditional "blue screen of death".
At first I thought it was due to some problems I was having with a conflict between The KM Player and Adobe Flash (as detailed here and here, for example). Luckily I had done Acronis 2010 images at each step of the way in the "new notebook" process:
- image made right out of the box by booting from Acronis disc first, before ever running Win7 on the computer (I call this the "Day 0 Image")
- image made after doing Windows Updates, Windows Security Essentials, installing apps (KM Player, IrfanView, FireFox, etc) and user data
Thinking the problem was due to the KM Player conflicts, I restored the computer back to when there was no KM Player, i.e. out-of-the-box Day 0 Image. This went fine and Acronis worked smoothly.
I did the Windows Updates but did not install any apps or user data... and the screen lockup still happens! Sometimes it happens soon after login, other times things run OK for a while first.
I am really concerned about this. If I can't rely on the computer to not lock up regularly, it is essentially useless to me. I am very surprised to see the problem even after an "out of the box" disk restore.
Any suggestions? Even if you don't have knowledge of how to deal with this problem specifically, do you know where else I can ask? What will Acer's take on this be? I am afraid they will just pass it off as "user error" and leave me stuck...
To Add:
1) I can't remember if this has happened only when on battery, or also when plugged in. I will check and see if it happens in both modes. If it only happens when on battery, at least that shows a path forward.
2) I have not tried to restore via the Acer eRecovery DVDs yet, though I don't know why this would be any better than the Acronis 2010 Day 0 image. I was in the process of burning the first Acer recovery DVD last night when... the screen locked up!
3) I have emailed Acer Support about the problem, though I suspect they won't trust Acronis 2010 and they'll tell me to restore via Acer eRecovery DVD...

I'm looking at picking up an AS1810T to replace my Samsung NC10 netbook and my HP DV8230US laptop.
I was looking at an MSI earlier due to its better warranty (3 years) and better price ($450 as opposed to $600)...but unfortunately, the lack of VT on the T6600 is a deal-breaker.
Does Acer have Virtualization enabled on the AS1810T? The SU7300 has it, but I want to make sure that there's nothing else that would prevent me from being able to use the laptop properly...as VMWare and XP Mode are requirements for what I'll be doing with it.

I thought Win 7 would pick up all poss hardware for the most part. I never had this prob on my 1810T-6188.
