Dell :: Odd Power Consumption Results Of M4400 Vs Studio XPS 13
Apr 2, 2009
The Studio XPS 13 should have a lower power consumption than the m4400 because of the small screen size(13"vs15"), lower power CPU(TDP of 25 vs 35), and a lower power graphics card (9200M vs 770M)...
Notebookcheck reports that the XPS 13 lasts 3hrs20min on idle, no wifi, and min brightness and 1hr10min under full load and max brightness...
In contrast they also report that the m440 will last 4hrs31min and 1hr35min respectively...

Thought i'd start a new one for this.
Experiences so far:
-Fan isn't on as much as with A09, not running on lower speed when cooling is unnecessary
-Still downclocking!! Though it seems weird because the GPU doesn't go over 81c even with OC @ 600/900/1590.
Besides that all is good actually.
I installed all other new updates etc. also HDD firmware for the seagate.....there is still a weird latency problem that's picked up by dcp latency checker but for me that doesn't give any audible problems (not even when producing music

I am looking for a laptop with a matte display (at least 15.4'') and low power consumption, and so far I've selected these ones:
- Latitude E5500 (WXGA anti-glare)
- Latitude E6500 (Led backlit)
- Vostro 1720 (WXGA anti-glare)
(always with P8600)
I really like the Vostro 1720 features, but I am a bit worried about its power consumption (having a 17'' display, a NVIDIA video card, ...). There are very complete reviews for both Latitude models here:

I recently bought a 5810 and Im having a far lower battery time then I expected. Even when running everything at maximum power saving in W7 I get no more then 3-3.5 hours or so. This is a huge bummer for me as it was the main reason I bought the laptop.

Just got my new 1810t delivered today. Mine is the one with the SU4100.
Notice that at idle it goes to 5.5-6w. Great. After anything intensive I do it always drops down to that level. However, when i watch DXVA x264 accelerated video in MPC or WMP, i notice that after quitting my idle power consumption jumps an average of two watts. The only way to get back to normal idle power consumption is by putting the laptop into sleep mode, then waking it back up again.
Watching the same x264 video in VLC which does not support DXVA doesnt result in the increase in idle power consumption.
Watching DXVA accelerated youtube HD content with flash 10.1 doesnt increase power consumption either.
Running the latest (15.16.2.64.1986) video drivers, but the same problem was present on the stock drivers that came with the laptop. Version of those drivers was unknown. Wattage was measured using both batterymon, and batterybar.

If I leave my M4400 idle with Windows (Vista Ultimate 32-bit) locked and the screensaver on for any length of time (e.g. 20 minutes), then the network card goes into power-saving mode even while on AC power, reducing the connection speed from 1Gbps to 100Mbps. I can see this because the colour of the LED on the port changes. The reduction in speed causes a brief disconnection from the network. When I unlock Windows, there is another brief disconnection as it reverts to 1Gbps, and this causes instant messaging applications to log out.
If I go to the Link Speed tab on the network card's properties in Device Manager and force it to 1Gbps instead of Auto Negotiation, it warns me that power-saving features will be disabled, but then I don't experience the problem and it never disconnects. "Reduce link speed during battery operation" is unticked, but this should not apply to AC power anyway. I've tried upgrading the driver to 9.50.14.2, A01 (released on 24/02/2009) but the problem still happens.
Does anyone else experience this?

Since the P8600 is a fairly common CPU on the XPS Studio 13/16 I thought this would be worth posting.
Stability was confirmed at each FID with Orthos for 60 minutes. I chose to disable SuperLFM and IDA. Under 100% load, at 2.4GHz the reported CPU temp dropped almost 12 degrees C. Obviously the difference was less at reduced speeds, but still worthwhile.
I do not notice any difference in the way the computer responds or performs, so as far as I am concerned this is free cooling. I was able to get 4hr 15min on the 9-cell battery with screen brightness @ 30% and low CPU demand (IE8 with wifi) so it probably modestly improves battery life too.

Running IntelBurnTest at the highest setting for 5 times, on my HP Laptop with a T9400-2.53ghz it causes the temps to go to 105 degrees which is the max temp and this causes an automatic downclock to 1.6Ghz for sometime. System is stable though. Also the times increase for each run meaning as the system gets hotter the clock downgrade to 1.6ghz is more frequent in each sucessive run.
Is this normal?

I finally got what is the old school Generation 2 look which IMO looks better. click here if you're interested to see how it looks like. Custom parts include the slot load DVD, keyboard, Atheros card and seagate hard drive. Future plans include quadro card sticker (being mailed) and maybe an internal camera mod.
After assembling everything, I continued to do more benchmarking using 3dmark05 and overclocking under vista. I've heard stories about vista hurting performance, but my god does it murder a good amount of framerates and performance. Non-overclocked, I got a best of 8582 on XP, and 7749 under vista.
After reflashing the vid bios and playing with rivatuner and atitools, I started at 575 core and 650 mem, ran 3dmark05, scored 9320. At first, I was pretty amazed at the score considered what vista did to it when it wasn't overclocked. I thought it would go somewhere where it was under XP (non overclocked). Anywho, I decided to up it a bit to 600 core and 700 mem. This time, 3dmark05 gave me a 9110. I tried it again, this time turning off any programs running in the background, and got a similar score. I lowered both clocks back to what it was when i scored the 9320 and ran it again. This time, it gave me an 8840.
Pretty interesting how these scores came about, but has anyone been in a similar situation? I'm thinking about going back to XP or just make a double partition for it, once i figure out how to w/o wiping half my HD.

Done some testing of chargers and charge rates. My non scientific findings as follows.
Battery start capacity 91.3%.
After 19 minute charge time -
Using 70watt charger :
Off 98%
On low power 98%
On full power 97%
Using 30watt charger :
Off 98%
On low power 97.5%
On full power 94.5%
To conclude the larger charger mostly maintains charge rate regardless of load on the computer.
The standard 30w charger maintains its charge rate on normal use, yet go to 100% CPU and charge rate drops by around 50%. It possible this could be far worse with an external USB HDD attached, 3G dongle and so on.
It seems that the computer can consume a little more than the 30w charger can output, but only of use in extreme circumstances.
Even with a larger charger the charge rate may drop if you had the computer consuming excessive levels of power, not sure what point this may occur.
Additionally batterymon charge rate indicator did not support the real world test.

I've browsed the discussions and have seen problems similar to, but not exactly the same as, my problem, hence the new thread.
Problem: I have a brand new Inspiron 1545 from Dell online. When I type text in Internet Explorer (e.g. webmail applications or this forum), even at a relatively slow speed, many of the keys don't seem to register --
that is, letters or spaces whose keys I press do not show up on the screen. As a result, I must type verrry slowly to make sure that every letter/space shows up, or else go back to re-type it. Strangely, I do not have this problem when typing text in, say, Notepad .....

One of the things that truly bugged me about this laptop was that it only shipped with 533MHz RAM (PC2-4200) when the hardware supported 667MHz (PC2-5300). When I started looking to upgrade I was bugged again that the 667MHz memory I was finding had a CAS Latency of 5 where the 533MHz ran at CL4. Then I finally located some 667MHz CL4 memory and decided to pull the trigger.
I am happy with the purchase and would recommend the upgrade to anyone with this laptop. I can't say if I used the best memory benchmarking program, but at the very least I can publish my results using SiSoftware Sandra Lite:
1) Memory Bandwidth test (HIGHER is better)
2) Memory Latency test (LOWER is better for both)
3) Cache & Memory test (HIGHER is better for Combined, LOWER is better for Speed factor)
PC4200 CL4 2x1GB (Original memory)
1) Memory bandwidth 3524 MB/s
2) Memory latency 138 ns, Speed factor 66.0
3) Cache & memory Combined index 9375 MB/s, Speed factor 14.2
PC5300 CL5 2x1GB (borrowed from a friend during the upgrade for reference)
1) Memory bandwidth 3588 MB/s
2) Memory latency 122 ns, Speed factor 63.7
3) Cache & memory Combined index 9645 MB/s, Speed factor 13.3
PC5300 CL4 2x1GB
1) Memory Bandwidth: 3663 MB/s
2) Memory Latency: 114 ns, Speed factor 55.2
3) Cache & Memory: Combined index 9910 MB/s, Speed factor 12.6.......

I just want to show you how much overclock you can expect from the HD4650 Mobile graphic card. Wait for 1080P Full HD results.
I don't have external monitor to do 1280x1024 standard test, I'll post the results next week when my monitor arrived.
( Due to poor 128Bit memory controller VGA can't handle 1080P res gaming even with No AA/All settings Low & Crysis FPS stay below 25. However 720P gaming is superb & Crysis stay above 36FPS all time with NO AA/ All Medium setting)
Notebook : Sony VAIO VGN-FW41M/H (UK Version)
VGA Card : ATI HD4650 Mobile Card (512MB DDR3)
ATI Driver version : 9.6
Benchmarked Resolution : 1280x720
Benchmarked software : 3DMark06

If your battery is mostly drained and you plug the thing in, within minutes the brick gets so hot that I'm afraid to let it sit on any surface, much less touch it.
I thought it might just be a defective piece so I got a replacement power adapter and it gets just as hot as the other one. Has anyone else noticed this?

how the power adapter of the Studio XPS 13 looks like, because the size of the power brick is essential to me. Although you can buy a separate one but that would be a waste of money.
So my question is, what's the difference between the 65W power adapter and the 95W power adapter? This is because choosing the Geforce 9500GE online would change the power adapter from 65W to 95W.
Why is this anyway? Isn't the 9500GE suppose to save more battery than the stock 9400GS?

My mom has a Dell Studio 1735 and when she tried to turn it on she says it maade a weird noise. I checked it and it doesn't power on at all. I cheked the power supply and it seems ok. The battery is fully charged.
When trying to turn it on the power button flashes quickly 3 times a long pause and sometimes it flashes a once very long and other times it flashes 10 short bursts.
No other light comes on. I've removed the battery and tried turning it on, but the same.
