Acer :: Timeline 4810 Strange Noise

Jul 24, 2009

I bought a 4810 about a week ago & so far I'm pretty happy with it, but one things bothers me & I'm not sure if it's normal or not.

After the laptop's been on for awhile (maybe 30 minutes+) it will make a strange snapping or clicking noise (definitely not the hard drive.) It seems to come from the screen area although I'm not positive on that. It's pretty rare that it happens, but lately I've noticed it happening when the laptop powers off.

Acer :: Timeline 4810 Win7 Battery (and Other)

Jan 8, 2010

For the past 5 months that ive owned m laptop, i have been running the Windows 7 RC.

However, given that i will be leaving the country for the next four months (during which time my RC license will expire) i did a clean install to an RTM (retail) copy of windows 7 ultimate 64 a few days ago. Since then, ive noticed some bothersome issues:

battery life is fluctuating heavily, and the predictions are nowhere near as high as they used to be (with the win7 RC i got 7 hours or so in practical use)

the Launch Manager software is not really working, when i unplug i dont see the battery logo come up on screen like i used to when i unplug, and instead get random changes in brightness and beep sounds when nothing seems to be happening (i think thats related to the optical drive management software) the other touch buttons, like wifi do show a logo on screen when clicked, but the battery button does not.

in the time i have spent writing this post, the battery indicator has predicted 5 hours, 5 hours 30 min, 7 hours 30 min, and 6 hours, all between 85 and 83%. i know it fluctuates some because its calculated based on usage, but this is way more than it ever did before.

in addition i cant install the VGA drivers from acer because it says my computer doesnt meet the minimum specs when i try to install.

Acer :: AspireŽ 4810 Timeline Vs. Lenovo T410s

Mar 23, 2010

First of all I will admit that I have never used an Acer before (I am a Lenovo/IBM person) and I don't get how this whole brand works. I hope you will be able to help me out. So my notebook is Lenovo 410s and i am very happy with it; now I am helping to buy a notebook for my friend who has similar needs as I and I would recommend her Lenovo again, but hey I just stumbled across Acer and found it interesting. So I'd like to ask a few questions in the hope you will help:

1. Who are the best sellers in the US of Acer computers? It seems to me that Acer, unlike Lenovo, is being sold everywhere and I can't make sense of this mess - i.e. who to buy from.

2. Would be e.g. an Acer 4810 Timeline (or suggest any other type) be able to meet the following:
a) need a quite computer (noise of any kind is especially annoying)
b) need a light computer (carry it everyday ..anything around 4lb should do)
c) need more of a business model: don't do any gaming, only office, web surfing and an occasional video watching
d) need a solid and sturdy build
e) need an integrated webcamp, SD card reader

Now I have to say that Lenovo 410s meets basically all the wishes I've had for a laptop: it's very light (3.8lbs), very fast, fantastic build. The only two issues that I don't like about it: the quality of the screen is subpar and it does get noisy - by that I mean fan activity. But overall i have not seen a more impressive computer than this.
Thus would Acer be able to beat this? What about screen quality? Heat issues? How bad are the speakers? etc. Btw. does Acer offer Solid State Drives with their units?

In sum, can anybody suggest a model that would equal the performance and specifications of Lenovo 410s and make a persuasive argument why to go with Acer and where to possibly buy it? (of course Acer being cheaper is one such argument).

Dell :: 1520 Strange Hdd Noise

Sep 16, 2007

i recently buyed a dell 1520, i'm very pleased of this laptop, my first laptop, but i'm worryed about one issue

from time to time, like 20-40 seconds, the hard drive (wd 160gb) makes a strange clonk/clink sound like it would park his heads and power off then power back on, and in that time, my games freeze for 0.5 sec or so, just a very fast freeze, and i have no ideea if this is good and normal or not, but from my previous experiece, it does not sound very healthy

i tryed with bypass/quiet/performace settings in bios at hdd management and it's no difference, and ofc the power saving is disabled both on hdd and on display so i'm getting to think the hdd has some problems, what you think?

the thing is that i have no errors on smart, i have no boot problems, i have no errors, just the annoying sound and the very small freezes

Acer :: Which 4810 Should I Get

Jan 11, 2010

My GF and I are getting a new laptop, and the Acer Timeline 4810 is at the top of our list. It's almost $200 cheaper than the ASUS UL80. I know Best Buy is far from the best source of info, but the kid we talked to said that the Acer is basically no more than a word processing computer and internet-surfer. Given we don't need much more than that, but I'd still like to get the best processor in this model I can, but there are so many configurations!

Would the best and fasted computer in this line be the 4810tz-4508? Does anyone think I should pony up and get the ASUS UL80?

Acer :: 4810 Tthe End Of The Freezing Saga

Feb 7, 2010

I flashed the BIOS, I tested the hardware, I custom installed Windows 7, yet still the freezing continued.

Now I've custom installed Windows 7 again, and this time I haven't installed or updated any drivers, apart from those that were installed during the OS installation.

So far, no freezing.

Obviously, this has limited some of the functions on my notebook, so I was wondering what was the best way to install each driver, one-by-one, to find out which one was the culprit?

I may leave it a few days, to make sure the freezing issue has gone away, but should I set a system restore point before every installation?

Should I also switch driver download to manual? I believe Windows will always ask permission to download (and I presume install) new drivers, but should I make sure?

I tried many ways to recover bios with Fn+Esc tricks using CD and usb flash with sort of different filenames (BIOS.WPH, jm31x64.fd, ICL50HW.fd, ...), but i'm not happy yet.

It seems, that the old finesses doesn't work with x810 Timeline series with Insyde bios inside. After many hours with uncle Google, it seems that nobody on the planet know the right way.

Acer :: 3810T Strange Windows 7 BSOD

Jul 2, 2009

Having some very strange Win7 RC install problems on my Timeline 3810T.

First - If the SATA was in AHCI mode in the BIOS, I would get a BSOD every time the partitioning was complete and copying files begun. When this was switched to IDE mode, installation went off without a hitch. This is with the machine's stock 320GB hard drive.

Second - I've received a Corsair P256 SSD drive, based on a new "very compatible" Samsung controller. After installing this SSD, the BSOD occurs no matter which mode I'm in (IDE or AHCI). I cannot seem to find a way around this. I've tried loading all different version of AHCI drivers from Intel for the ICH9M-E, but no go.

I'd really like to unleash this SSD

Acer :: Ferrari 3400 Dead (again) With Strange Behaviour

Nov 10, 2007

About a year ago my Ferrari 3400 kicked the bucket, but it turned out that it was the RAM that had gone bad, I replaced the stick and it worked beautifully again.

Around that time I also bought another 1 gig stick to get it up to the 2 gig mark.

Both sticks are Ultra PC3200 400Mhz Sticks.

This evening while working on a website my computer froze up completely. I rebooted and similar to the last time it died, it wouldn't post.

So I tried pulling out the RAM, trying 1 stick at a time, one slot at a time, reversing the sticks etc.

Once the screen actually lit up and there was a flashing cursor. But the next time I tried there was nothing.

Following this I tried a spare 256mb sodimm I had kicking around, this time it posted fine and seemed to be good, but following the post screen hung at a black screen. I reset and it once again refused to post.

So I tried swapping in all the sticks again with different combos, finally once more the spare stick managed to get it to post but with the same result.

I'm completely baffled now. This thing's well beyond the warranty period now, my gig sticks I think are both still covered, but I'm really doubting that the RAM is really the issue. Could it be a processor issue?

Acer :: Aspire 5920 Making Strange Noises After Spill

Mar 22, 2009

A few weeks ago I spilled green tea (no milk or sugar) on the desk around my Acer Aspire 5920 laptop. The tea went into the back left quarter of the machine, mainly through the ventilation holes and the ports on the left side. I removed the battery, drained the liquid, and let the machine dry out thoroughly. Since then the machine has worked fine. However, it occasionally makes strange noises, especially on start up. It's a fizzing/popping noise, in short bursts, like static. It sounds as if it's coming from the loudspeaker.

does anyone know the machine well enough to diagnose the fault? Only the components in the back left quarter of the machine got wet. Could there still be water in there? Is the noise a sign of a serious problem? What can I do to fix it? As I said, the spill happened several weeks ago, and, apart from the noise, the machine works fine.

Acer :: Timeline CPU 100%

Jun 17, 2009

this thread is for all Acer Timeline owners who suffer from 100% CPU load, when only thing that helps is restart.

1. If you are a Timeline owner - having this problem or not, please do report here, what model you own and tell us how is this happening for you.

2. Please inform Acer about this, so they know and can offer a solution (especially if you're from United States as this will have greater impact rather than me telling this stuff to Slovak Acer service)

Alright, this is what I got so far about this thing:
-CPU will just go nuts at no specific time (idle, browsing, ...)
-Proccess explorer shows 'Hardware Interrupts' as source of 99.9% of CPU power
-unlogging won't help, only restart does
-updating BIOS doesn't help
-uninstalling acer epower managment doesn't help, even though it seems making these episodes less frequent somehow

Mine notebook is:
5810T with SU3500 and GMA 4500MHD.......................

Acer :: Second IDE In Timeline 1810T

Mar 7, 2010

I actually have a Gateway EC1815U and heard it is identical to the acer 1810t.

In the Gateway bios (insyde) I see an option for a device on IDE1. IDE0 is used for the internal hard drive.

I am wondering if there is either

1- a way to expose the 2nd IDE externally to use like a eSATA device with it

or

2 - Be able to install a 2nd IDE device like a SSD to use that interface

I'm wondering out loud and checking here to see if anyone can offer some advice.
