Acer :: Choosing Replacement Drive
Dec 2, 2007
I have a Acer 1710 which came with a DVD drive, which turns out to be a UJ-820B.
It has died but finding a replacement seems an issue, I can get one on ebay but would prefer to get a newer model if possible.

I've got a 5610 (5612wlmi).
The Hitachi-LG GSA-4082N cd/dvd burner seems to have mostly died. It only occasionally recognises that a disk is in the drive, and burns almost always fail.
I've tried cleaning the lens and I've removed the unit and given the contacts a clean and a dust down. Still problematic.
I'm assuming that there's a hardware fault on the drive.
I'd like to replace the drive but the only GSA-4082N I can find are 2nd-hand out of old lHPs etc on eBay.
Is there a new and not-too-expensive unit that will work as a drop-in replacment?

I'm trying to choose a laptop at the moment and I'm finding it hard to do. I primarily want it for gaming and want it to play all the latest and greatest games.
Originally, I wanted an Alienware but I can't justify the price to be honest. Maybe the M11X but I'm not too sure if thats very good for gaming.
These are the laptops I'm looking at:
DELL Studio 17
DELL Studio XPS 16
Alienware M11X
The studio 17 has a 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 560v
The XPS 16 has a 1GB ATI® Radeon™ HD 4670 graphics card
&
The Alienware M11X has a 1GB GDDR3 NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 335M
Which is the best graphics card out of these? I know theres more to it than just a graphics card but I thought that would be a good place to start. Also, the i7 processor would be best I think so does that cancel out the M11X? Which laptop would you get for gaming? Personally, I'd like the 17 inch screen size as I'm out of college and don't really need the portability anymore - I use my iPhone for most of my web browsing nowadays. Basically, I'm looking for a really powerful gaming laptop for around €1,200.

I'm looking to upgrade the harddrive in my Santa Rosa Macbook Pro and am currently choosing b/w these two
Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD5000BEVT 500GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache
[url]
Seagate Momentus 7200.3 ST9320421AS 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache
[url]
From what I have been able to gather the 500gb is quieter but has the slower revolution rate and less cache and obviously more space

1. Dell S-XPS 15.6" Intel® Core™ i7-720QM Processor (1.6GHz,4 Cores/8 Threads,turbo up to 2.8GHz, 6MB Cache) with ATI Mobility RADEON® HD 4670- 1GB.
Cost-73,900 INR or 1650 USD
2. Dell studio 15.6" Intel® Core™ i5-540M Processor (2.53GHz, 4 Thread, turbo boost up to 3.06GHz, 3M cache) with ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5470 - 1GB

Both has 4GB DDR3 1333MHz SD-RAM with 500GB HDD and all other configurations are same.
My sole purpose is "gaming".
P.S: Dell S-XPS looks are good compared to Studio.

They have 32-bit or 64-bit Vista option and I'm thinking to choose the 64-bit, since 64-bit sounds newer than the 32-bit.
But is there a known problem with 64-bit Vista? Should I be concerned about something? Maybe a huge compatibility issue?

if you can take apart a Sony Z and replace the optical drive with a standard hard drive? Would the older tutorial here be the same way you can take apart a new sony Z or how do you think you could get in there?
[url]
Or is that a different model? I don't suppose there's a new tutorial out for the new Zs as they just came out.
On another note - I heard you're suppose make a new connector for the hard drive because the Sony Z uses microSATA or uSATA or something like that for their optical drives. There isn't a connector that you can readily purchase now.

I bought a hard drive (Seagate 320GB SATA 2.5") intending to upgrade my storage space which is currently 160gb. I checked to see if the drive was compatible (the drive my HP dv6500t shipped with was a Toshiba MK1637GSX) and I had figured it was since both were SATA.
The hard drive arrived today. I decided that before I begin putting my drive image on the new drive that I check to see if it'll fit. I open it up and take the drive out and to my surprise I see that the drive that was inside the laptop had some kind of pin-connectors.
The Seagate laptop did not. I took off the caddy that was holding the hard drive, but I noticed that the pin connectors were a part of the hard drive itself.
So this has left me rather perplexed. I looked online and found caddies and SATA connectors for a dv6000 laptop but they were going for around $35.
Is this normal or am I just missing something here? Should I have ordered a different drive?
My laptop is a Pavilion dv6500t purchased October, 2007.

How much would the difference in the Display be if I choose:
i) 16.4" VAIO Display (1600x900) with NVIDIA® GeForce® 310M GPU (512MB VRAM)
While customizing the F instead of:
ii) 16.4" VAIO Premium Display (1920x1080) with NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 330M GPU (1GB VRAM)
The second option is Full HD and seems to have a more powerful graphics card but I heard with the first one I would have more battery life?
What are the positives and negatives of each?

for now it looks like Sony will not offer any possibility of Windows upgrade for machines bought before January 2009. So the only possibility will be to buy new OS from MS and install drivers by myself.
Right now, I have original Japanese Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit shipped with the nb and I'm thinking to upgrade to Win7 Ultimate 64-bit. Is it possible for me to buy just Win7 Ultimate Upgrade for $219.99 from MS Store? Is it possible to make clean install with that?
And what's the difference between OEM and regular version? I have possibility to buy OEM version for much less...but I thought OEM versions are just shipped with new computers.

I want a 7200 500GB drive in the E6400 that I plan to purchase..
Dell doesnt offer a drive this big.
These drives are quite cheap these days. So i will get the the E6400 with an 80GB and swap it out with an aftermarket 7200 500GB.
Im hoping to use the OS disk that comes with the machine to install Vista on the new drive.

got a customer who called in looking at a SN-S082H/BEBN as a replacement to the stock drive which he says has died.
I checked the Dell site to see if it had any part #'s listed for possible replacements but the only thing it shows was a HDD recommendation.

I have an XPS M1330 with a faulty hard drive. The warranty has just expired (2 weeks ago) and Dell were not able to give me the part number to buy a replacement hard drive myself.
Do you know if these notebooks would accept any standard 2.5" SATA drive?
OR are the laptops BIOS protected or have some other Flag set on them so that the laptop would only recognise drives from certain manufacturers

I replaced the 40 GB hard drive that came with my VGN-B100B with a Western Digital 250 GB drive. When I installed Windows XP Professional on it, the partition was only 127 GB. The WD drive is a PATA, which I understand to be synonymous with EIDE, which should work on this computer. Is there a limit to how large a hard drive this computer will recognize?

I received a replacement hard drive, but the description says it is a 250GB 5400 RPM hard drive. The hard drive I have on the system is 250 GB 7200 RPM. I also checked further specifications on the internet.
The replacement Toshiba 250GB hard drive (MK2552GSX) has 8mb buffer while the hard drive currently on the system Seagate 250 GB (ST9250421ASG ) has 16mb buffer.
Has anyone receieved a weaker hard drive as a replacement. I have to return one of them as part of the warranty service

I would like to purchase a Z590 which is currently configured with a SSD Raid of 60GBX2
I was hoping I could break the raid configuration and use one SSD for OS and other for data.
But 60gb for data might be less. Can I replace both SSDs with
1 2.5" SSD and 1 250 GB standard SATA notebook hard drive

I have the same problem as the user in another thread Acer Aspire 6930 screen replacement
but since the layout of 6920 and 6930 are different, I stuck at the part when I have to pull out two video cables beneath speaker cover, cause there is only one cable (that I am aware of) in 6920. So I hope someone could explain to me what to do next after removing speaker cover, cause I don't want to brick my laptop

My 6920G went down a few days ago, I sent it to local computer store to have it diagnosed. It turned out that they say it is a mobo issue and said that it would cost aroun 400 to get a new mobo + labour fee.
I don't have any warranty on theis laptop, and the 1 year warranty by the manufacturer has expired. I am just wondering if I can order the mobo fron Acer and maybe replace it on my own.... I don't know which would be better, to have the guys at the store do it for me or phone Acer....

My laptop has recently overheated, and after 2 years of serving me, I still want to keep it, for memories, and as a backup.
The ati x1400 has overheated inside of it, and only part of the display shows, rest are lines of colour :P.
Question is, I need an ati x1400 replacement. Or if it's possible the upgrade (to x1600).

I have a 1 year and 10 month old Acer Aspire 9300 laptop and the motherboard recently bit the dust. My retailer in Gananoque Ontario could not find a replacement. I called Acer which took forever to get to someplace where I could leave a message. I received no reply. After you've called once it's impossible to call again. I guess their answering machine recognizes my phone number and then asks questions that makes it impossible to get through. I sent a detailed explanation of my problem by email 3 times asking a few simple questions, the most important being 1) where can I send the laptop to be repaired? 2) do you sell replacement motherboards and if so how can I buy one? Am I asking too much or getting too technical for them? I've been trying for several weeks now to contact Acer to no avail. What kind of an idiot company is this? A techie put me onto a company called Grand Tech in Richmond Hill Ontario that can replace the motherboard on an exchange basis but the replacement will likely be a repaired one.
Someone told me that the problem I have with the motherboard is common and it is because the solder used at least when mine was made was of poor quality. I hope that problem has been resolved. I'm afraid a repaired replacement my have the same problem. Some people just say to trash it and get a new on which I did. I bought a Dell Inspiron 17 which is supposed to arrive on Nov 11. I would however like to repair the Acer if it can be done cheaply and use it to replace my 8 year old PC in the rec room.
