Acer :: Gemstone Blue 6920
Oct 20, 2008
Well I just Bought the last saturday an acer gemstone blue 6920. The model with the intel gma x3100 and it came with Windows Vista Premium. The first thing that i did was to install the newest drivers of vga..i downloaded them from the intel website but the results were ugly..
I decided to downgrade the OS to Windows XP Pro...And I did it i have to put my HD on IDE MODE from the bios and install without a problem..
I downloaed the xp drivers...
After this i played fifa 09 but in two time the game crashes and when i closed the game with ALT+F4 i saw the next message:
THE SCREEN DRIVER IGXPRD2 STOP WORKING etc etc and the screen went like if I doesnt have any driver so i have to restart
Searching via google I found that there is an old driver(6.14.10.4859) that makes the performance on gaming a little better...well i found the driver and installed.
The results? Yeah it was true the fps in games were a little better but when it seems to be all normal THEN THE GAME CRASHES AND BSOD!
Yeah Blue screen of death so i have to restart...only have been happenned two times and the gameplay is much better than with the latest drivers but i need to do something with that BSOD...It doesn't appear much but its a problem.....

Are the new models by Acer, the 8935G and the 5935G, based on the Gemstone Blue design?
Because both look very different from the 6935G, 8930G etc.
Is that a new design and Acer hasn't announced it yet?

The Definitive Guide to Acer Aspire Gemstone Blue Throttling Issues v2.0
Credit Due to DarkSilver, ATG, Sgogeta4, and Unclewebb
This thread is specifically designed to put an end to the multitude of threads about people asking why their Aspire 6920G, 6930G, 6935G, 8920G, or 8930G is experiencing lackluster performance in gaming.
What Causes It
We’re not 100% certain, but through a process of elimination, we believe there are two possible causes:
•That a sensor on the motherboard is going haywire, reading internal temperatures entirely wrong. As a result, the system’s BIOS believes the CPU’s temperature is reaching dangerous levels when it’s really well within operating limits, and causes a thermal throttle to be activated. This halves the CPU’s performance until the temperatures are returned to what the system perceives as safe levels.
•It could also be potentially linked to a ridiculously low setting in the BIOS and not the fault of a motherboard sensor – this was refuted by my travel to Acer’s Canadian headquarters, where a stock 6920G was shown to operate just fine, with no throttling whatsoever. That being said, given the large number of users affected, it's still a possibility.....................

I have ordered an Acer Gemstone Blue 6920g which is due to be delivered next week sometime.
I was wondering if anyone else already owns one of the gemstone blue laptops and has tried a laptop bag or case out for it.
The gemstone blue laptops come in a 16 inch and 18.4 inch screen size and have an aspect ratio of 16:9 instead of 16:10.

I experience stutter and frame rate drop after about 40 minutes of gaming. Something is triggering Nvidia Powermizer to slow down my GPU. After the GPU drops in performance it stays there unless I restart my computer. this is not related to cpu downclocking because i'm running throttlesop. more info in my sig.

my laptop has just died. I purchased the product just under 1 year ago and it came with a 1 year warranty.
I have an ACER 4920g 2Ghz (T7300), 2Gb RAM, 256Mb Graphics, Vista Home Premium.
Fortunately I store very little on the laptop so this is not a data retrieval exercise!
I was sat surfing the net tonight, and pop!, the whole unit went dead. I was running it from the mains at the time and there were no performance symptoms that suggested it might be on its way out.
The battery pack has a green light on it which flashes when it is connected to the laptop now, but is solid when I unplug it from the laptop. the light used to be solid all the time. Is this flashing an error code?
When the power pack is plugged into the laptop, the blue power light on the laptop does not light up. pressing the power button does nothing, the fans do not kick into action, absolutely nothing.
The laptop has no signs of life whatsoever - at the time it went pop, it just powered down within 1 second, like a power failure. it did have a charge in it.
The fact that it had charge in it and it was connected to the mains is making me think there has been some kind of internal failure - a processor failing? or motherbaord failing? or the connection between the motherboard and the power button?

From what i see from the Acer Aspire Gemstone official page. It would seem like all models in that series has 1020p display regardless of screen size from the specifications page.
However, I have two laptops in question right now.
First is my friend's 6935G which is featured in the official page and is said to have a Full HD display on its 16" screen. However, the maximum resolution available on my the laptop is only 1366x768. Furthermore, there is a sticker on the laptop indicating "Full 1020p HD display" and no, I did not get confused with it over the "Full 1020p HD Playback"
Secondly, is my own personal 6930Z which is essentially almost the same except the lack of the 9600GT, biometric fingerprint reader and blu-ray player found in the 6935G thus its low price. As seen from the website, the WHOLE series is supposed to have 1020p resolution display which mine is part of. However, my max display resolution capable is also the same as the 6935G although mine doesn't have the sticker that the 6935G has. I'm not complaining due to mine being a budget model but shouldn't the 6935G have the touted 1020p display?

I am quite tempted to buy the AS8920-6048. This model is available in the USA now and comes with 802.11a/b/g wlan. Due to my need to stream HDTV I'd like to have 802.11n. The AS8920-6671 comes with it and is almost double the price. So the question is can I get the AS8920-6048, replace the a/b/g mini-pcie card by the 4695AGN and be done with it? The latter has 3 antenna leads, while the former only 2 antenna leads. It boils down to whether acer uses the same anteannae setups for all the 8920s and just varies the card, or do they actually put in extra antenna in the as8920-6671?

I'm kind of interesting in making a laptop cooler like this

I was under Windows Seven when i got some virus problems. i format my whole HDD and start to have some problems. sometimes the computer randomly stops. Often when i'm copying files or defrag the disk. there, my laptop seems very hot. it shutdown when I play (whatever the game played the temperature are (according to SpeedFan) about 100°C))
I firstly think about dust. so i have clean by removing the trap at the bottom and cleaning the ventilation holes.
That change nothing. my computers stops 10 minutes after the game's started. but it boot right now after it stops, (i've head that in case of a too ward hardware the computer will not boot right now after it stops) metimes after a program ask a reboot and i say yes , the fan don't work at all after the reboot.

I am in the process of doing some minor upgrades to my 6920g, gonna be adding a T9500 and 500gb drive in about a week, and was curious if it is at all possible to add a blu-ray drive to my model. Now I know several models had the option to come shipped with the drive and a quick search on google came up with replacement drives for those models, so mainly I want to know if any of them will work in my 6920-6864.
Also on a semi unrelated note I am trying to find the 6920g service guide to help me with the processor upgrade, but all I can find online are places selling it. I know the link to it can't be posted here but if someone has it let me know and we can get in touch elsewhere.

I had vista installed on my laptop, Acer 6920, (first OS) and it was direct from factory so everything worked fine. I then installed ubuntu and everything still worked fine. I then deinstalled both of those to put on windows 7 RC where all my hardware was working perfectly (minus the fingerprint reader but i honestly couldnt care about that thing) so my computer eventually got pretty bogged down with crap to the point where boot was about 30 minutes. during this whole time my sound seemed to work, but near the end windows stopped finding any internal sound related hardware (the speakers and the mic). For other reasons i did a clean reformat (3 times) and reinstalled 7 Professional 32 bit and when i booted i downloaded all the drivers and everything seemed to install correctly, but when i rebooted the sound still didnt work nor did the mic. the exact error message windows is giving me is "No Audio Output Device found" however when i plug in a headset or a bluetooth adapter + headphones there is audio and it works perfectly. I really need sound to work as some programs crash if they dont detect a sound output and also for monitoring audio recordings.
I have tried installing all of Realtek's drivers. Literally all of them. None of them worked what so ever despite clean installs and deinstalls.
I now am running 64bit and ive almost given up on this problem. I bearly saved this computer and i dont wanna have to buy a new because of sucha stupid issue like this.
More info:
Under the hardware manager in windows there is no tree for sound devices. there was an unknown component which i put forceware on as i thought it was the sound device but no go.

when i insert a dvd into the drive, the drive tries to read the disc and the yellow led turns on, after a few seconds it finishes reading and when i go to open it in computer, double click on dvd drive, there is nothing on the dvd. i tried a couple of different dvd's, but the same thing happens.
One thing that makes me think that the problem is software, is my ability to boot from disc. i can boot the recovery disks, windows xp, linux... whatever.
i've updated to bios v1.14 from 1.10, but the problem persisted. i always tried removing upperfilters & lowerfilters and even restoring to factory default settings. nothing worked. i remeber that this happened to me about 5 months ago, and that suddenly it was fixed, but two weeks ago it returned.

I've been dealing with the fallowing.
Audio issues, "while playing world of warcraft. most attempts at running background audio like music or team speak results in under water gargle sounds as if the sound card cant run two programs with audio at the same time"
I've reinstalled the drivers, and tweaked with the sound settings and more without any positive solutions.
Video card issues, "video card is a 9500m GS however has been having frame rate issues with world of warcraft and other basic games. I've tried to find updated drivers of the video card online with sad results from acer's side with their lack of work on updates."

I got some great information from the people on here previously and I'm back for more advice.
I have the ACER 6920 Gemstone Blue, it has a built in webcam called Acer Crystal Eye.
As I get older the paranoia gets worse, and lately I've been wondering who is watching me! I have been using Skype, Msn, Yahoo messenger and Facebook to stay in contact with family back home. I am not at all convinced about the secuity of these programs and wonder if I have been hijacked.
How can I check to see if my webcam has been hijacked?
Is there some where that I can look to see if it is in use?

I have the above model and it seems to be performing quite nicely. However, what I've noticed on all Valve games is that after a few minutes, the frame rates drop from mid 70s-80s (low) to 10-15 regardless of whatever resolution, texture or ingame setting I change post this sudden drop. restarting the game makes the problem temporarily dissapear but is back within a few minutes. The effect is especially noticeable when there are about 30 zombies on top of you
I've tried disabling one core, reducing sound to low and have even monitored temperatures via nvidias system checker as well as speed fan. At no point does GPU/ CPU temperature exceed 60 degree celcius. Have also tried several drivers all the way from 178.x to 182.x (using modified infs) to no avail. Please share your input regarding this problem.
I also accidentally uninstalled acer bioware protection and upon reinstalling cannot set it up since clicking a blinking finger on the setup menu states "Unable to select fingerprint device!"
Music sounds rather "tinny" and baseless using these inbuilt speakers. I assumed with all this dolby gee whizz, id get a sublime experience

My Acer Aspire 6920 Laptop freezes occasionally, and nothing but a cold shutdown fixes it. Sometimes after I turn it back on again, the keyboard is unresponsive until after I've logged into my Windows 7. If I was playing music at the time of the freeze, it plays the last few seconds of music in slow motion over and over again.
There does't seem to be anything in particular that causes the crashes (sometimes I'm running games, other times it was idling).
How can I stop it freezing?
What I've tried: Reinstalling my Windows 7 64bit, Installing the latest drivers (from various sources)
I took a video of the laptop in it's frozen state, if this would help anyone? If it would, I can upload it to youtube... Basically nothing but a cold shutdown (holding in the power button) does anything.

I'm looking for a new laptop (for basic use, nothing fancy) and am having trouble deciding between these two. I'm basically looking at the base models, specifically at, say, these two: this 6920 [url] and a 6930 with these stats [url]
With comparable hardware, is there much difference between the two? I like the keyboard layout on the 6920 better than the 6930 (not a fan of the number pad) but that's mostly aesthetic. Do the two differ much in any significant way? Why is the 6930 a little bit pricier?

It had Windows Vista installed. I deleted all the partitions including backup (Yes I found out that was stupid), and tried installing Windows 7.
It wouldn install Windows 7 so I went back to Windows Vista. I found my recovery disk and it sort of worked. There where no errors in the setup but when I start my computer it doesnt go to Windows.
It has a black screen with a white _ blinking.

my screen bezel has sooo many fine scratches in it from all these years. So does the glossy part of the speaker bar above my keyboard, for some reason.
I've tried to remove or hide them with the Pledge (furniture polish) trick, but I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. Am I supposed to wait like 10 minutes for the applied polish to dry, wipe off gently, then do it again until the scratches are gone?
Also, are there any other budget methods? And if all else fails, where can I find a replacement bezel (with the screw hole covers) and a replacement speaker bar? The speaker bar might be easy to find, but I've looked everywhere and can't seem to find a new bezel.
I need one- the current one I have has cracks near the screws, so the fine scratches aren't the only eyesore on the machine.
