View 7 Replies View Relatedjust got my mac last week, been using windows since forever. It's definitely a pleasure and exciting experience to us Mac OS. However there was a problem, I like to put my files on the desktop, but I couldn't figure out how to check the size of them.
View 4 Replies View Relatedthere is something I am not able to understand. After I upgraded RAM to 4Gb (from 2Gb) with original Apple RAM. I ran an H/W check (the short and the long one) at next boot and everything was OK (NFF). In spite of this I noted that there were 2Gb less on my HDD and I do not really understand why. Do you have any idea on the reason of this event?
Was it because of the H/W check? Or something odd after RAM upgrade?
why this happened (if you got an idea) and what I could do in order to recover these 2GB (I have plenty of space now but I would prefer to have 2Gb of photos / mp3 instead of stolen space).
I recently had some problems with my MBP...

I have the 17 inch MacBook pro...just got it yesterday.
Right now, it will not boot passed the white screen with the apple logo.
I inserted the OSX CD and booted from the CD by holding C... now I guess I'm installing OSX onto the HD again to see what happens.
This problem occurred after my thumb drive was acting up. When I put in the thumb drive, and then start transferring files into the thumb drive... the little progress window would freeze up. I could not force quit, as you can't force quit "Finder" for whatever reason. So I had to do a restart by holding down the power key. Again, same thing happened and I had to do the power key reset...
In this article it states that the Macbook pro will receive a massive update with a new CPU and GPU. Is this true? What are your thoughts and opinions?

I downloaded and installed a firmware critical update for the fan functioning. It was for OS Tiger
Now my fans I never hear come on and the bottom near or above the battery and the top above the keyboard get hot. I would say hot because I touch it and it is amazing something does not burn. I would definitely think plastic if left there for a while it would start to bend.
I know the downloads are on apple/support but I will just damage it more. has anybody heard of this, did anybody download this update? It said what it was before it started downloaded it.
it is indeed handy to have coolbook on the menu bar and it shows that at the time when temperature went up to 80~90; the cpu was running at full speed.
at the task i was running where i underclock down to even 800mhz things were fine, but it just shot up to 2.5k ghz for no reason.
and after locking at the range of 800-1600, the temperature did indeed dropped to a more desirable temperature of 60 but still sticked to the upper limit at 1600 w/out reason.
all temperatures stated are Celsius.
there weren't any cpu intensive tasks running either; once again, i turned off everything after seeing the temperature went up.
since it has nothing to do with the GPU(every unibody mac user love to say this, but no, not the gpu this time.
for those who didn't know what happened prior; my macbook pro loves heat and more so reaching 80~90 w/out reason. venting is clean enough there is no visible dust gathered, it had been used with a cooler at home so it wouldn't be the entrapment from desktop material either.
I just checked software update. Apparently it'll eliminate the startup noise that you hear from the DVD drive.

Seems like there are still problems with the SATA II 3.0gb spec.
Since the 10.5.7 update i've noticed that plugged in my Macbook Pro is MUCH faster. About a second faster in every respect.
However, now, on battery, the Macbook Pro is a second SLOWER with everything that it was originally and scrolling is now choppy?
Well there is a iTunes update. Witch means we will probably see iPhone OS 3.0 next week. And maybe the real iphone 3g

Apple has released Mac OS X 10.6.3 v1.1, what is essentially an update to its recent update for Snow Leopard. It contains a typical round of stability, compatibility, and security fixes for Mac OS X, though apparently not enough to warrant a bump to 10.6.4.
Included in v1.1 of 10.6.3 are improvements to QuickTime X, OpenGL-based apps, coloring messages in Mail, and printing reliability. This update also resolves issues with opening files with some special characters in Rosetta apps, color problems with HD content in iMovie, recurring events in iCal when connected to an Exchange server, and it improves performance of Logic Pro 9 and Main Stage 2 under 64-bit mode. Apple digs into greater detail in its release notes.
Mac OS X 10.6.3 v1.1 weighs just over 785MB, but is strangely not available via Software Update. You can grab it as a Combo update from Apple's support site.

Is there a reason why it isn't available via Software update?
My 15" 2.8GHz mbp works fine (only had it for 2 days now) with the stock 500gb hitachi hdd. BUT if I try to install a hitachi travelstar 320gb 7200rpm 3.0 Gb/s hdd it freezes occasionally with the color wheel of death!
View 8 Replies View RelatedIs it possible that problems with implementing the new Core ix series processors in the 13 inch MBP be the cause of the hold up?
I know that Dell faced this problem with their XPS 13 line. There was a problem with the chassis and it could not be upgraded. So instead continuing to sell a laptop with no future, they just decided to scrap it altogether.
Is it possible that the 13 inch simply does not have enough room for the new processor + whatever type of graphics solution they want to add?
I tried downloading the latest Nvidia notebook drivers for x64 and installing on vista x64 and i get this error message

I see the cpu raise and my fans will kick on well above 2000 rpm. Before this my computer would normally be stable around 1999-2000 rpm. I can clearly tell by just typing that my mbp is runing hotter.

View 10 Replies View RelatedWhen I click "download all free updates" it says that they cant not be purchased because i do not have write access to the iTunes media folder. View 3 Replies View RelatedI updated to 10.5.7 and it runs quite well however I noticed a flaw of video flashing and I wanted to confirm this with others. In Stacks I use the Applications folder in list view. I have a long list of applications so I always have to scroll to go through all of them. When I use two finger scrolling to zip through them I see flashes of video artifacts while two finger scrolling. This only happens when you have enough apps in list view to require scrolling to see them all. For example, with no windows open I click the Applications folder and begin rapidly two finger scrolling through list view and I can see artifacts of the desktop flashing within the list view box. Anyone else notice this after the update? I have already reformatted and installed nothing but my basic apps and still see this.
Apple mentioned that they updated the Nvidia drivers for the unibody Macs. I have a Macbook Air.
Someone over at the official Apple forums noticed that the description of the Macbook Pro 17" keys was different from the 15", then apple silently updated the wording on the 15" models too to match the description of the keys from the 17" models.
There is speculation, that since there have been some complaints about the Macbook Pro keyboard, Apple have silently updated it for the Macbook Pro 17" and for every Macbook Pro 15" manufactured since early to mid January onwards?

So I was wondering, does anyone here have a Macbook Pro 15" that was manufactured since mid January (not just store stock purchased since then), and are the keys "better" than the earlier model Macbook Pro's?
I have a time machine backup of my macbook, can I update to snow leopard, and restore everything from the backup? I have a bootcamp partition if that makes a difference.
