Apple :: 7200 Rpm Laptop Drive Vibration
Jan 31, 2009
I was wondering if any apple owners could post if they are using a 7200 rpm drive in their macbook. Does the new aluminum unibody experience vibration from this drive or is it ok. I suppose the macbook pro would also fall under this since its also aluminum.
Im looking for a faster drive but im afraid the whole macbook will shake like crazy spinning up and down.

How hard is a HD swap on a Macbook PRO? Part of my whole conversion of the MBPRO to a "desktop" includes a display, keyboard, mouse...and I'd like a 7200 RPM drive....anyone done this? What's involved? What did you do with the old drive? I'm not interested in transferring data...I don't have barely anything saved on it which makes it easy.

Whenever my DVD-drive does any form of reading, it vibrates very... very... hard creating this really irritating sound along with it. The drive vibrates so hard that my entire desk shakes and I can feel it even when I work from the other end of my table.
It's especially annoying when I'm actually using my laptop keyboard and not my external as the vibrations are so strong, my hands get numb after a few minutes.
It's actually barely noticeable when I'm playing games because the drive usually only reads the CD for the initial load-up. But when I'm playing a music CD and the drive is reading constantly, it'll be like 2 hours of constant vibration -_-.
I've already gotten this DVD-drive replaced twice, and every single time, it does the same thing. Also, if it matters, I've had to get my motherboard replaced once XD. So even though the mobo + DVD-drive is brand-spanking new, I still get the same problem.
So if anyone could help me fix this problem, that would be great. And another question just to help me to stop worrying . Will the extremely strong vibrations damage any inner components of the laptop over time? I'm not exaggerating about the strength of the vibrations, they actually are that strong , so if its a possibility that it will cause any damage, I think I'll refrain from playing music CD's on my laptop -_-.

So I got my dell 1558 a week back and I love everything about it. Except for the annoying hard drive vibration I can feel to the left of the touchpad, a bit on the touchpad and the left side of the keyboard.
Initially, my research said it was an issue with the Seagate 7200s, so I got a WD Scorpio Blue 5400RPM, Cloned my existing hard drive and used that. After re-seating it again, the vibration had become less but still noticible.
I also found out that if I applied pressure/weight to the left of the touchpad, the vibration would be gone.
Anyway, I want to know if other Studi 1558 owners are noticing the same issue or not?

I've this GSA-U20N DVD drive on my T400 running Win 7. It create an irritating humming noise with vibration while playing DVDs. It doesn't happen all the time but every other time. The DVDs are in good condition and play well otherwise well with or without the drive noise.
I tried another new drive UJ8B2 and does create the similar noise.

Is it possible to get the 1530 with the 320GB 7200rpm hard drive as opposed to the 5400? Months ago on the dell site they had the choice between the two. And now...not. ???

It seems they top out at 500 gb. Although I saw there is a 640 gb drive called the Samsung Spinpoint MP4 that is supposed to be out, but I can't find anywhere to buy it yet.
There are other larger drives, but they are only 5400 rpm.
My 320 gb laptop internal drive which came with my Dell finally crashed completely, blue screen, and all tests regarding the drive say 'fail', so I guess it's time to buy a new one...it was 5400 and I should upgrade to 7200 anyway....
Fortunately everything is backed up.

I just ordered the new 2.66Ghz 15" UMBP. I just realized after it has shipped from Shanghai, that I forgot to upgrade the HDD from 320GB 5400RPM to 320GB to 7200RPM.
Will this make much of a difference in terms of performance? Are there any advantages to having the 5400RPM drive?

Before I even get into that ... How does one rename an application on OS X?
I just installed MATLAB R2009b. OS X insists on calling it "MATLAB_R2009b" and I don't like having the underscore character in my application names ... I tried going to the Applications folder and renaming it there but when I tried to start it up aftre doing that ... It would quit on itself. Help?
Anyhow, about the slowdown, I think it's from some uninstalls that I made recently ... I also just installed CS4. Anyway, how do I ensure that uninstalled applications didn't leave clutter behind ... How can I get rid of said clutter?
I'm getting into some serious photography now and it's become apparent I will be using CS4 for HDR. if the files I'm going to be editting are 10 MP ... I expect them to be huge on the disk ... I'm sure the 5400 rpm won't hold up.
The question now remains ... SSD or 7200 rpm HDD? Cost is a factor, space is a factor, performance is a factor.

Pending my purchase of the new MBP this Wednesday, I bought a 320GB WD Scorpio 7200 RPM HDD to replace the OEM 160GB 5400RPM. Will I experience any problems? Ive been hearing of people experiencing vibrations and loudness compared to the OEM, but only from the Seagate 7200.4 one. Im on my dad's MBP (2.53, 9400M) and its dead silent all the time. He has a 250GB 5400RPM. I have a 128GB Patriot SSD but want more storage and speed so I opted for the 320GB. What should I do?

I am trying to find out if you guys have the same issue.
I have ST9500420AS Momentous Seagate 7200rpm 500GB HDD. Since day one I am feeling a light vibration in the laptop next to the touchpad. This is not too bad but is very annoying since it is constantly there.
For those who have a 7200 rpm Seegate drive please see if you have this issue. It is noticeable when fan is off.

Just received my HP Mini 1030NR and love the way it looks, size, everything..EXCEPT....that I have noticed a distinct vibration in the wristpad area on both sides.
As I was adding anti-virus and tweaking as I usually do, I noticed this vibration and wonder if this is an issue with SSD-based laptops.

Something recently happened to my laptop, and now whenever I boot up my laptop, I get a message stating that "No drive detected", and I don't know if the hard drive might be damaged or not.
I tried connecting the hard drive directly to a desktop pc since it's a sata hard drive, but my desktop pc just froze on the boot screen whenever this hard drive was connected.
I also was going to try and use a hard drive external case to maybe connect it to the pc this way, but I wasn't sure if it would work

I connected a dvd drive to my laptop using, a sata to esata cable. my laptop has a ESATA port.
I don't know if you should post some kind of config summary (if yes let me know, I will do it promptly) basically I have a HP DV6t quad edition with an Intel 5 serie chipset,
PM55 express chipset (dont really know if it make any sense but still, I will just say state it) so I installed Intel Matrix Storage and when I connect the drive I can see it, but windows 7 does not see it, it's like I didn't plug anything in. [url] also my bios is almost configurable, I don't know why I can change the time, the date, the admin password, the boot order, virtualization, fan on/off that's pretty much it. so what options do I have if I want to make this dvd drive work?

What i do have is a Toshiba Satelight laptop with Widows 7 and a good dvd drive. Also I have a 500 GB external hard drive. Then attach the external hard drive to my HP 15 Notebook by usb port and install Hp recovey disks from the external hard drive.

Laptop is an Acer Aspire 1640. 2.26GHz, 2gb RAM.
Laptop was working fine with the factory Hitachi HTS541680J9AT00 80gb drive.
I purchased a Samsung HM160HC 160gb drive as it's supposed to be the fastest PATA laptop drive available.
I put it in and the laptop just kept saying "no operating system found" with the XP disk in the drive.
I tried several optical drives and got the same issue with all of them.
I then hooked a USB optical drive up and it wouldn't boot from it.
I removed the internal optical drive and the system then booted from the USB drive and loaded Windows fine.
I just assumed it was a fluke and once Windows was done loading I removed the USB drive, installed the factory internal optical again and turned it on...
"No operating system found".
This is where I'm stuck. If I remove the optical the system boots into Windows fine. There were no issues like this with the other hard drive.
I have tried setting the hard drive as Master, Slave, and Cable Select with no change.
Laptop has the newest BIOS.
Samsung does not offer firmware updates on their hard drives.

I'm looking to replace the hard drive in my XPS Gen 2. We currently have the original 60 GB 7200 RPM drive and I want at least an 100 GB 7200 RPM drive. I'm having a bit of trouble finding much - I need EIDE, not SATA, right?
I have come across this:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...437&CatId=2680
This would do, but is there anything else available that would be better? 120 GB or more would be nice, and so would having more than 8 MB buffer. It must be stable, too.

Since I haven't seen this posted anywhere, I felt it was worthy of mentioning. You can now purchase half a terabyte (aka terrorbyte <- yikes) in a convenient 2.5" form factor for your laptop.

Edit: Well actually 512 (actual) GB would be half a terabyte but you get the point

While waiting for my new GPU to arrive from Hong Kong, I've been looking at other components on my Acer 9920G.
I currently have two 250GB hard drives (no other details in the manual) I know they are 5400 rpm and wonder if the improvement in performance of a 7200 is worth the cost?

Choice is Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500 GB
5400 rpm or Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500 GB 2,5 S-ATA 7200rpm. Is the speed noticable on these two

any opinions on the Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500gb st9500420asg hard drive when used in an acer 6935g. I am looking to replace my existing hitachi 250gb hard drive with the seagate, for when i upgrade the os to win 7 pro 64bit.
I am interested in the following aspects:
- Hard drive speed in real world use, ie is the laptop noticeably faster in use and in booting up, shutting down? Yes, i know it is 7200 compared to the 5400 but does the speed actually make a difference..?
- Power (battery) useage, is there much reduction in battery life (20 minutes or more)?
-noise, is it noiser than the stock hdd, if so is it annoyingly noisy?
I have done my research on the web and in some reviews it is highly rated but in another they recommend the wd scorpio blue and in another the equivalent hitachi. So that is why i am asking here for peoples actual experience of the drive in an acer 6935g or similar acer laptop and not relying on the tests done with some other pc rig that they used.

I have Envy dv6t-7200 Quad Edition notebook and I recently installed Windows 8.1.
I can't seem to find how to enable bluetooth. Some things I can narrow it down to:
1) I am pretty sure that model DOES come with bluetooth (I think I remember using it before, but not 100% sure).
I can't seem to get the specs page of this product, but I bought it directly from HP site ...
2) I downloaded and installed the Qualcomm Atheros Bluetooth driver and Ralink Bluetooth Software driver that I found on the HP Support & Downloads site.
3) I don't have any mention of bluetooth in my Device Manager (generic or otherwise). From first appearance it would seem I don't have bluetooth on my notebook but again, I'm pretty sure I do have.

Whenever i turn on my laptop it connects to the wi-fi for a brief period of time and then disconnects and i have to reconnect to the network manually. after doing this, it takes an extremely long time to autoconnect and says "connecting to the network is taking longer than usual".
I have the "Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless-N 2230" Wi-Fi Card/Adapter and the Driver version is "15.10.3.2" i'm not sure if this is the newest version but i have tried to update and wasn't able to successfully do so.
Also this occurs on any wifi i connect to, even wi-fi that i connect to for the first time takes an extremely long time to connect (2-5 mins).
