Apple :: Black Macbook - When It Is Charging The Screen Feels Different Than When It Is Running On The Battery
Feb 20, 2010
On my Black Macbook is it when it is charging the screen feels different than when it is running on the battery. For example, when it is charging and I run my finger along the screen there is more resistance and it is not as smooth as when it is running on the battery. Is this normal?

Should i keep charging my MBP while it's fully charged? Or i should unplug the ac power and wait until the power ran out then charge again?

Two questions:
1) Is it normal for the battery to take several hours, i.e. 4+, to fully charge after being mostly depleted? For example, my battery says it's like 95% charged, yet has 40 minutes to go.
2) Is it normal for the battery time-left indicator to jump all over? When I run it on battery, the amount of time remaining constantly changes. It goes from 5 hours to 3 hours to 4 hours, etc, etc.
The first time I ever used the computer when I got it in December I charged it up fully, kept it plugged in for several hours, then let it completely die out overnight and fully charged it again.

I recently got the Macbook for Christmas and it has been giving me no problems until last night. I was watching a video on it and I had it plugged in, as the battery was running low, when it all of the sudden went blank and shut itself off. I thought that maybe the battery had died for some strange reason, since it had not been in its charger long, went on my other computer and dismissed the situation until this morning.
When I unplugged it, checked the battery life (it was full, by the way, 8 green lights came on) and then tried to turn it on, nothing happened. I held down the button for a long time and still, nothing. I tried plugging it back in and turning it on, still nothing.
I got the manuel out and tried the Command, P, R and Power button thing, which made the laptop make a small noise. Then I tried once again to turn it on, but the screen just went to a lighter gray and nothing happened. When I pushed it again, it went dark. I tried removing the battery and putting it back in, but it still did the same, and I even tried holding down the power button for five seconds while the battery was out. Still nothing.

i'm having a issue with my santa rosa mbp. I left for dinner and left my notebook on. Naturally the machine went to sleep. After i came back the machine would not boot up, the screen doesn't even turn on. The light on the latch release remains on. When i try a hard reboot, i'm having the same issue. Black screen, doesn't even get to the grey screen with the apple logo. I've tried going on 1 dimm or ram to see if it's a issue with the ram and still doesn't fix it.

I have a late '08 unibody MBP. Every once in a while, generally not every day but once every few days, I have a split-second issue where half of the screen on my MBP flashes black for a split-second. Everything's perfectly normal before and afterwards, just that. I suppose it's not terribly bothersome, but it is noticeable. I've done some searching and it seems to be happening to many people and may be software based.

This is going to be my very first Mac. I'm really excited about it, but I don't know which one I should go for... I narrowed it down to these two models. Which one should I go for and why?

I bought a black macbook this summer and every night when I'm in bed trying to do work I can barely see which keys is which. Obviously this wouldn't be a cheap fix but is there a way or is it possible to install the new light up keys of the new macbooks onto a pre-remodel macbook?

Besides running Onyx, what can I do to keep my Macbook running smoothly?
I don't have very many things installed, and am sure to delete bits of things when I get rid of them.
Also, what exactly does Onyx do?

I got the keyboard Eject key to work. Post has been updated accordingly.
This was done on an early 2009 white Macbook, with Vista SP2. Your mileage may vary. I'm not responsible for any damage or loss of files. On that note, always remember to backup data before doing a reformat!
First of all, I booted from the OS X Install disc, went into Disk Utility, clicked on the hard drive and selected Partition. From there, I created a new single partition, under options I selected Master Boot Record table. After it was done I rebooted, holding the ALT/Option key until I got into the boot manager, and I ejected the OS X disc and inserted the Windows disc (I am using the original Vista RTM disc in this case, and I installed SP1 and SP2 later)...........

My first mac is almost a year old now. What should I do to keep my macbook pro running quickly? I maxed out my ram, but what maintenance should I do? I have a lot of programs that I don't want to loose by reinstalling OSX.

I absolutely love the new Macbook Pro 13" hardware. The unibody case and high quality panel makes me want to buy one right now. Nobody really offers anything similar. The problem for me, however is the fact that it comes with and runs OS X, and as far as I understand I will need to use Apple software (bootcamp) to run Windows. Is it at all possible to modify the computer to run Windows exclusively? And if I do run Windows through Apple software, are there any limitations to what I can do there or is it exactly the same as on a regular PC laptop? Running OS X is not an option, as alot of very specialized software I use is Windows only and I frankly dislike Apple OS.

I'm going to uni next year to study CSc and have been told nearly every system they run is an XP machine. I also checked what software they run, and it turns out the majority aren't available for the mac. I asked them what would be best for the course and they told me I would get better support if I had a PC and that there may be workarounds for macs. However, the person I spoke to (head of faculty) has no experience whatsoever with OS X.
Anyway, the thing is I want to keep my current macbook mainly because I find it hard to part with and the second being I don't have the cash to dish out on another notebook of comparable quality.
The question: Which version of Windows (XP/Vista/7) runs best on a Macbook?
By this I mean which has the greater support (drivers), and is most stable to work with (incl/ battery life, less glitches etc).
Also, will Snow Leopard provide better compatibility with Windows and how? Thank you in advance for any information you can provide me with.

About seven months ago, I bought a Lenovo T400 for law school and left my 2006 13" MB with my dad (the computer mentioned in the subject line). All he did was install Snow Leopard on it, and then let it sit and barely use it. So, last time I was home I took it back from him to have as a fun/backup laptop.
I know the fan on this model (compared to the older G4 iBooks) always did run somewhat frequently, but usually I could tell what I was doing that would do it (something CPU intensive). However, since I've been messing around with it, I've noticed the fan runs a LOT more often, at a high speed. I could even let it sit for five minutes with no applications running and the fan will turn on for a bit.
I don't think I'm just spoiled by the cool-running T400, but I'm fairly sure the fan is running more often than when I used this MacBook. Can anyone tell me if Snow Leopard (at 10.6.2) is making a difference? Or is there some other issue that can be present here? I've also done the PRAM reset tricks to no avail.

I bought the unibody MacBook some weeks ago, probably nearing a month now. And I'd like to perhaps get some answers on some things that have been bothering me a little here and there. I've called AppleCare but they almost always tell me to bring my MacBook down somewhere to have a look at it, and that is not a very viable option. Unless it of course is something major.
1. What is the normal temperature for a MacBook running say Firefox with maybe 5+ tabs open and a video streaming in one of those tabs? Along with maybe aMSN and Pages. Before I had SMCFancontrol running, with power attached it would run at or between 55~61 degrees celsius or so. Currently with SMCFancontrol running, it runs at about 45~51 celsius but the fans are working doubly hard.
While running games on my Win XP partition, it gets hot, sometimes if I put it on my lap for a second or two, it almost feels like the surface could scald me. But I guess that's because I'm running games.
2. Is it more advisable to have the battery out or in if when I'm at home and using just the power adapter?
Applecare has advised that I leave it in all the time, but I'm not entirely convinced on this. Macs aren't PCs but most if not all of the people I know that use PCs have the battery out all the time and only plug it back in when they need it.............

ALSO about hairline cracks on the macbook, i read that apple would replace/fix it for free, and there are some hairline cracks on the palm rest, think apple will still honor it?

So earlier this year the original battery in my black MacBook died on me. Machine is out of warranty, but took it in to the Apple store anyway, and they ended up replacing it for free. Well THIS battery only has 40 load cycles on it, and it looks like its dead now too. MagSafe adapter plugged in, green light, battery indicating its not charging. I've pulled the battery out, checked pins on the power adapter (hooked it up on a friends MacBook to be sure it wasnt the adapter, and it did charge).

I have a Blackbook 2.4, with 2gb of ram. Right now I don't have the stock ram, my friend took it when he sold it to me, there's some random mis-matched slow 2x1GB sticks of stuff in there, I can buy a 4GB stick (800MHz) off of another buddy soon for 100 kuai ($14), I was wondering, I know OSX will only take 4GB or whatever, and that the book wont support more than 4GB, but will ONE slot support, and fully utilize the 4GB stick?
I only need this computer for another month before I buy a new MBP, so I don't want to spend any actual money on Ram, I'm doing semi-ok with 2gb.

My battery is at roughly 50% charge and I only have 7 cycles through it, yet I get a (Not Charging) message when I plug it in to the wall.
I've tried a few other bricks that other people own, all of which work to charge their MBP13s, but it doesn't work on mine. I even tried booting to Win7 and it still doesn't charge.
I tried shutting down then holding the power button for a long time, but didn't work.
I tried shutting down then holding shift-control-alt and hitting the power button once, then waiting 5 seconds before turning it on and that didn't work either.

I am looking into getting one of the new macbook pro's. Though I must say the non removable battery does concern me a bit. In past laptops I have had, I without a doubt saw increased battery wear and tear when I left the batter in the laptop while the laptop itself was plugged in. I completly destroyed a battery on my Dell laptop by doing this for about a month when it was asking as a desktop. I took the laptop which used to get around 4 hrs of battery life and then after a month it got no more than 15 minutes.
So after that I always took the battery out, so now with the new macbook pro's you cannot take the batteries out, so wont the batteries wear down to nothing faster than if you took them out when not using them?

I've had my MBP for about 4 month now and have been having problems with its keyboard since I bought it. First, the "Z" key sank in (I think there was a problem with the spring). I took it to the Apple Store, and they "fixed" on the spot (it's much harder to press and only registered a key press 70% of the time). The lower right corner of the "E" has noticeably sunk in, and I need to resort to pressing the upper left corner. Also, the left side of the keyboard feels "mushy", not hugely so, but definitely noticeable after typing a few sentences. Can I request that Apple just replace the entire keyboard instead of just individual keys?
