Apple :: Overclock / Benchmarks 9600M GT On Macbook Pro
Apr 25, 2009when the MBP first came out, but with no results other than people saying it would get too hot... maybe now people have had some experience with overclocking it on the MBP?
I gather you can essentially patch the firmware so it behaves as a 9700m GT. Are there other ways, as that sounds risky to me? Anyone overclocked theirs?
Alternatively, do any recent drivers give significantly better results?

Jun 16, 2009I just want to get an idea of the power of the 9600m GT video card that comes with the macbook pro's. Now on my desktop computer I have a 3 year old ATI 1600x 512mb PCI-e video card which is definitely getting old. My question is can anybody tell me how the 9600m GT compares to the ATI 1600x, is it better? this way I can get an idea of the power of the 9600m GT because I know pretty well what the 1600x is capable of.

Apr 6, 2009any display oddities when using the 9600M on the 17-inch Crapbook Pro in spite of (or possibly, because of...?) the firmware update.
I get 'tearing' of the window contents quite often - e.g. when scrolling in Finder, but also similar display issues in other applications as well. It's pretty annoying. Before the probably inevitable call to Applecare I was wondering if there was anything I could do about it? I've seen it on both of the machines I use in the main, while I haven't seen it on the spare - although this is probably because I only power it on to keep the machine in sync.

Nov 16, 2009I am ready to purchase a new MBP that I will use all day long with hotcomm voice and picture chat, email, powerpoint, word, excel,browsing, and a professional stock trading application called realtick that will run through vm ware or parallels and skype. This will not be my only computer but it is the one I would like to use the most. I am sensitive to heat problems and am considering the 2.4 processor because I have it in my head that it may run cooler. I recently used a thinkpad, (i know not a direct comparison), with a t9300 and dedicated video and it was so hot it could______ fill in blanks... Ultimately the heat is what killed the motherboard so I would like to stay as cool as reasonable.
I am considering the refurbished 2.4 15" with the nvida 9600m GT and 9400m GPU's because I like the price. I also think I can get some value from the dedicated video on my stock charts, (but am really not sure). I do not want to outsmart myself and get the wrong thing. Would someone here with some experience maybe give me an opinion if I should be looking at the 2.53 15" without the switchable video. The heat is one issue, but the other is my realtick charting software that will have to run under windows xp that I am concerned about with regard to needing the stronger GPU.

Would foliage appearing as if by magic be a result of having less memory in the GPU? or would it be down to system memory, the CPU or another factor I'm unaware of?

Feb 13, 2010I have been playing with nvidia powermizer but as soon as i started scrolling down webpages, the gpu temp would increase. So i requested help and was referred to this thread: [How To] Use Rivatuner as a better "Powermizer" alternative
I followed the instructions but i was still getting mid 60's degress celcius on my gpu(i set it on low power 2d). I wasn't quite satisfied. After considerable research i found out a program called lubbo's fan control. There was a previous version released which was a fiasco. However, i noticed something. That one had a releae date of 20-jan-2010. I decided to try it and wow!! That is a keeper!!! I can select the maximum rpm of my fans, the minimum rpm. I can even go below 2000rpm (But i didnt risk it). The most interesting feature is that i can select what us the maximum temperature i want my system to be. I chose 60c and now, while i'm typing this, my gpu is reading 56c. That's the first time i'm getting a steady sub 60 temp. It isnt going less and it isnt going more than 56c. My fans rpm are at 5000 but while listening to a music or even using it without music, it isnt that disturbing. Also, it will kill your keyboard manager. Who cares and who needs it. We can control the keyboard from the bootcamp manager.
One last thing that i will add is that this software detects both gpu's (9400m + 9600m), a proof that the apple guys are being lazy to provide the gpu switching software. Tested working in w7. To make it start everytime you log on, just create a task and schedule it to run when you have logged on.

I thought a memory upgrade would give my laptop a bit of a boost in terms of handling large LR libraries and PS files.
I looked up my chipset specs and went hunting for RAM, ending up with Kingston HyperX 2x2GB as my primary choice. KHX5300S2LLK2/4G has 4-4-4-12 timings for my setup

Feb 5, 2009To start I should remind everyone that i'm not a mac user. I have never owned a mac or used OSX properly before today. As such, my opinions should be taken as coming from someone who has much knowledge and experience as far as PC's are concerned, but who is a total mac n00b.
First Impressions
When I first walked over to the Macbooks I was quite taken aback. The build quality is out of this world. In fact, I immediately walked over to the latest PC laptops to compare and immediately thought "manufacturing FAIL". Really, the Macbooks are italian sports cars, and PC's are 30 year old farm tractors to use the typical "car analogy".

I really only had any interest in the Macbook when I first went to the Apple stand, but came away with the intention of buying a MacBook Pro. Let me explain:

Dell :: 7900GS Why Are Clocks Resetting
Jun 24, 2008I've got my 7900GS flashed so I can change the Clockrate, but the drivers I'm using I guess are causing my ATI tool to reset the clock settings I put.
I used: This site to flash
I set the slide and hit "set clock" it just resets to 375/507.
I'm guessing it's the drivers. I had some drivers that would let me do just the memory, but I'm looking to get both memory and core. What do you think it is?
I feel like somehow it isn't flashed anymore. Not sure, I know I flashed it, but I can't get it to respond to overclocking at all.

Dell :: Stop Switching To 3d Clocks
Jul 13, 2007if it is possible to stop the video card from going into 3d clocks for certain applications. For instance, my skin for my computer uses a lot of transparencies and any simple movement of a window causes the video card to go into 3d clock mode. To me that seems like an unnecessary waste of heat for just everyday simple tasks like surfing the internet etc. I'd still want it to dynamically change to 3d clocks when I run a game or something though.

After I've been gaming for about 30 min the cpu clocks down to 0.27ghz and the bus to 182Mhz. I downloaded some software of intels website just to identify the CPU and this is what it reads:

Mar 7, 2009I have been speculating over this prospect giving the direction that Apple took with the starting price of the 24" iMac (upgrade everything else and downgrade the VRAM).
I mean, this is something I would like to see, but I wonder if it is a smart move on Apple's part given how much they make off the current MBP's with the so called Apple Tax.
And, if they made this move, one has to wonder if it still would be considered a Pro.

Feb 5, 2008I did the nvflash 79XXXXX.rom command and it asked me if I wanted to accept, I pressed "y" for yes, and it said it was successful.
So I load up windows and install coolbits and atitool, I got a steady clock at 640/1250, obviously I didnt want to keep it that high, but I benched with it and it did great, +2000 points on my 3dmark05 score. 8500!
I then changed the clocks to 450/1100 which is where I was going to keep it for everyday use, I clicked apply and went back in to verify and they were still there.
I reset my laptop and came back online the clocks were set to default.
What did I do wrong? on the newer nvidia control console it doesnt have the "apply settings upon startup" option.
i am using the 169.04 drivers so these drivers are correct(I read the newer ones do not allow the overclocking).

May 9, 2009I downloaded this updated for my unibody Macbook Pro, and I think it's pretty vital. However, it gave me this error when I tried to install it: "You cannot install Macbook, Macbook Pro software update on this volume. This update requires Mac OS X 10.5.5 or newer." Now don't tell me that I have selected the wrong partition to install the update, or that I need to update my OS to 10.5.5 because I already have 10.5.6 and I chose the Macintosh HD partition to install the update.

Sep 12, 2009So I'm definitely getting a 13" Macbook or Macbook Pro. Apple has some great prices on refurbs so that's probably the route I'll be going however I'm having trouble discerning the difference between the 13" Aluminum Unibody standard macbook and the 13" Unibody Macbook Pro. From what I've read they both have the upgraded screen, they're obviously both unibody, both have the large button-less trackpad, and both have the 9400m. They even have the same dimensions and the only difference I can see between the images is a slightly different case bevel (also the firewire and sd card ports, both are useless to me).
Unfortunately, none of the Apple stores or BestBuys in the area have a non-pro unibody 13" Macbook for me to actually handle and compare. So, basically, what makes the pro version with the slower cpu and smaller hard drive at the same price point worth it?

Jul 6, 2009If I make an image of my hdd from my white macbook with disk utility onto a hard drive I take out of a unibody macbook pro will it work and boot properly?
I will do this by taking the 250gb hdd out of the unibody macbook pro and putting it into a sata external usb hdd enclosure, then making an image of my current 120gb white macbook and writing the image onto the 250gb. After, I plan to put the 250gb hdd back into the macbook pro and boot it up normally as if everything from my white macbook was just copied onto the macbook pro.

Aug 12, 2009She has a white macbook with leopard I think, and has a separate partition in which she has boot camp, she uses specialized software that can only run in windows (doesnt run in vm). She got a new macbook air but wants to keep everything intact.
Do programs like duper clone drives with all files intact, including partitions? Keep in mind that the windows side is more important, installation of this software can only be done remotely from Russia, so it's a bit of a hassle if we screw up, we have to contact IT at a specific time and get them to do it.
Would I have to take the drive of the macbook air out? Or can i just clone to an external hard drive and then move that to the mba hard drive, in target disc mode or something.

Apr 16, 2010I've been looking at basicly two models, both got almost the exact same price tag here in Norway, so I'm not sure which one to go for.
The first ones is a MacBook Pro 15" with High-resolution 1650x1080 glossy screen, featuring the top of the line Intel Core i7-620M CPU the other is a MacBook Pro 17" with even higher resolution (1920x1200) glossy screen, featuring the slightly slower Intel Core i5-540M.
I don't list the other specifications as I don't really care about them, I already got a pair of 4GB 1600MHz CL7 (2x2GB) DIM's and a Intel X25-M 80GB SSD that I'll be using anyway.
There will be lots of movies and series played on my MacBook Pro, that's why I don't really considering paying a premium for the anti-glare screen, even though I love anti-glare and tend to struggle with glossy screens I don't see the point in actually paying more for it. And when watching movies and series, in often very dark rooms the glossy screen actually have some advantages.
The hard thing to decide here is slicker and lighter, with smaller screen and lower resolution, but better CPU versus the bigger, more heavy but featuring bigger screen and Full-HD+ resolution but slower CPU.....................

1-a 13" MacBook Pro, primary use will be Internet and e-mail and manipulating music files. Will my husband really notice a difference/benefit between the basic 2.26 and the 2.53GHZ (and is it worth about $250 more)? If he uses it for video downloading will that make a difference?
2- a 15" MacBook Pro- here I'm debating between the 2.66 and 2.8. My daughter uses it for Office apps, PhotoShop, music, Internet and e-mail. Again, would video downloading make a difference?

May 7, 2009I am currently returning a dell studio xps 16" as its so sooo much hassle to deal with dell and the fact that i got 3 messsed up replacements in a row. i am looking to get a macbook or macbook pro. i would prefer a macbook pro (lowest model) although the cheapest method i can find is £1163 from the higher education store. is there any other way or place that sells it for less? apple seem to charge crazy prices for a low spec. een £100 would be expensive but maybe afordable. only discounts i found for the macbook/macbook pro are 14% higher education (the one i am looking to use) and 6% EPP and school discount. iv looked at the macbook but im going to use the laptop for movies, work and internet. movies on a 13.3" arnt exactly enjoyable to watch so thats why im looking for a macbook pro.

Apr 27, 2009I finally decided that i am going to take my desktop HTPC from home to grad school for movies/TV and playing demanding games.
So now I cannot decide upon which notebook to get -
the base Macbook Pro 2.4 or the base Macbook Air 1.6
I am going to be mainly doing work: taking notes, photo editing, and also some light gaming (2d games and old 3d games (red orchestra, combat mission) when away from apartment) on the notebook.
So I was wondering which is a better choice for me.
The macbook pro has a faster core 2 duo cpu, but the FSB and RAM are all the same speed. Obviously the 9600mGT is 2.5x faster than the 9400M, but I am not going to need it for intensive gaming.
Also the macbook pro has a larger screen.
But the Air is so much lighter and thinner, and would be a good thing to take to libraries. And it is 200 cheaper....................
