Apple :: Macbook Pro Processor Speeds For Video Editing

Dec 21, 2009

I'm looking to get a new Macbook Pro for Christmas and I am pretty decided on everything but processing speed. I will be using my laptop for web design (Adobe Creative Suite CS4-sometimes multiple programs at same time), video editing (Adobe Premiere CS4, Final Cut Pro) and possibly sometime in the next 3-4 years, animation (Maya). I have two 2 TB hard drives and I'd be editing with video footage on them most of the time. Not playing any games. I'm pretty decided on getting a 15" (have one now and like the size for traveling+editing), 320 GB 7200rpm hard drive and 8 GB memory. However I have no idea what processor speed would be best for me between 2.56, 2.66 and 2.8.

What processor do you think would be best for me? Is there a big difference between the three making the higher ones worth the money? Is there anything in my current setup that I should change for optimal results?

Also, you can get a spare battery and use it as a second battery right? I'll be traveling a lot (like round the world) so extra battery time will be needed.

Sony :: Z, SR Or FW For Hd Video Editing

Jul 12, 2009

I'm torn between deciding whether to get a high end cto of a z, sr or fw series laptop for video editing. I am familiar with the fw series. It's very good but weighs a ton and only has ddr2 memory available for it. I'd like to get a high end cto of a z or sr. I see they both go up to 2.8 ghs core 2 duo and use ddr3 memory and have dedicated video cards.

While the builit in screen is not 1080p, it seems big enough for video editing. My concern is performance.

Dell :: Upgrading A Latitude C840 For Video Editing

Oct 18, 2007

looking to use a computer for image/video editing. Due to 'budget constraints' hah, I am unable to afford a new laptop. I do, however have a Dell Latitude C840. Unfortunately, it has a couple of problems that I hope you, my reader, will be able to help me with. I am hoping for upgrade information. I will list each thing to make it easier to respond to. If you can, please make your suggestions detailed (for example, the exact name of something I can use to upgrade).

Things to upgrade:

1. The speed, as I said, it is very slow with both image and video editing. The computer has a Pentium 4m processor (2 ghz), and 512 mb of ram. Can either of these be upgraded?

2. I am constantly running out of space. I am currently outfitted with a 60 gb hard drive, but I have 33 gb of photos, and I am constantly having to delete photos after uploading them to the external. Is it possible to buy a bigger hard drive?

3. Now, I would be fine just working on my photos right off of my external hard drive, but the slow speed of the usb connection between my computer and the external makes this nearly impossible. I have Usb 1.1 (I think). Is it possible to upgrade my usb port to 2.0?

Dell :: M1730 OR The NP9261 For Gaming And Video Editing

Oct 14, 2007

My work associates like both the 1730 and the new Sager 9261 for gaming and video editing etc. This has caused a real discussion that gets heated. I would like to get some Dell users input. It is true that the Sager has quad core but is 1 pound heavier than the 1730 and the Sager gets only 1 hour or so battery life. What would you say to them?

Apple :: Macbook Pro - Processor

Jan 25, 2009

im moving over from a pc to a mac. As far as the processor, this is where i am torn. Between the 2.53 and the 2.8 Ghz processor. I am a pretty intense gamer (i play World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, Counter-Strike, TF2 and in the future Diablo 3), but also am going away for school this upcoming fall(so battery life is a + also). So when i go away for school, i want to be able to play my games, while also being able to bring a extremely portable laptop that can run on a full battery for a while.

Apple :: 13" Macbook Pro - Upgrade To The Faster Processor

Dec 10, 2009

I am headed out to the Apple store tonight to pick up the 13" Macbook pro for my wife. Is the upgrade to the faster processor, HD, and ram worth the jump from 1199 to 1499? Would it be worth the bother for me to upgrade the components myself? I have no problems working on notebooks, just never have worked on a macbook before.

Apple :: 13" MacBook Pro - 15" MacBook Pro - Processor Speed

Dec 1, 2009

equipping 2 machines:

1-a 13" MacBook Pro, primary use will be Internet and e-mail and manipulating music files. Will my husband really notice a difference/benefit between the basic 2.26 and the 2.53GHZ (and is it worth about $250 more)? If he uses it for video downloading will that make a difference?

2- a 15" MacBook Pro- here I'm debating between the 2.66 and 2.8. My daughter uses it for Office apps, PhotoShop, music, Internet and e-mail. Again, would video downloading make a difference?

Apple :: MacBook Pro Looks Like It Lost The Video Card

Mar 21, 2010

Daughter told me that her MacBook Pro looks like it lost the video card again. I plugged it into my MacBook Pro and got her homework files off of it. I'm going to bring it into the Apple Store this morning where they will most likely replace the motherboard but it will be down for a week. The system is a few months shy of three years old so the extended warranty should cover it.

My question is do current MBPs still have the video card problem? This is the second MB replacement for this computer so I expect the replacement motherboard to last about 1.5 years. I would probably want to buy a replacement before then so that she doesn't lose her system during school. I think that we have enough in the way of spares so that she can get by - I'm probably going to give her my Dell XPS M1330 for the week but I'd like a long-term solution. I don't think that I will give her my MBP as she games and I don't want to lose my system.

Apple :: Poor Torrent Speeds With Transmission

Feb 20, 2010

Using Transmission to download a torrent, I've noticed that download speeds are consistently hovering around 15% of what my connection is capable of downloading -- which is to say, it's still a triple-digit kb/s, but quite a bit slower than it should be.

In Transmission, my port setting tells me that the chosen port is wide open, which leads me to think that neither Snow Leopard's firewall nor my Time Capsule / router is getting in the way, even without me checking specific settings. The download speed in Transmission is set to unlimited, and even if I set upload speed to 60% of what your usual residential cable internet line can handle, there doesn't seem to be an improvement.

The online Glasnost test tells me that there is no ISP throttling being done.

The torrents can have anywhere from seven seeds to dozens, to hundreds, and into the thousands, and can be left to run for minutes to a couple of hours. It doesn't matter. I've also seen torrents connected to north of 300 seeders without an improvement in speed.

Apple :: Macbook V Macbook Pro (My Short Review Based On 2 Hours At PC World's Stand)

Feb 5, 2009

To start I should remind everyone that i'm not a mac user. I have never owned a mac or used OSX properly before today. As such, my opinions should be taken as coming from someone who has much knowledge and experience as far as PC's are concerned, but who is a total mac n00b.

First Impressions

When I first walked over to the Macbooks I was quite taken aback. The build quality is out of this world. In fact, I immediately walked over to the latest PC laptops to compare and immediately thought "manufacturing FAIL". Really, the Macbooks are italian sports cars, and PC's are 30 year old farm tractors to use the typical "car analogy".

The Macbook

I really only had any interest in the Macbook when I first went to the Apple stand, but came away with the intention of buying a MacBook Pro. Let me explain:

The MacBook's build quality is awesome. It's solid, no creaking plastic or flexable build, completely and utterly solid. Awesome.............

Apple :: 15" Macbook/Macbook Pro With Integrated Graphics For Less

Mar 7, 2009

I have been speculating over this prospect giving the direction that Apple took with the starting price of the 24" iMac (upgrade everything else and downgrade the VRAM).

I mean, this is something I would like to see, but I wonder if it is a smart move on Apple's part given how much they make off the current MBP's with the so called Apple Tax.

And, if they made this move, one has to wonder if it still would be considered a Pro.

Apple :: Refurb MacBook Unibody Vs MacBook Pro

Sep 12, 2009

So I'm definitely getting a 13" Macbook or Macbook Pro. Apple has some great prices on refurbs so that's probably the route I'll be going however I'm having trouble discerning the difference between the 13" Aluminum Unibody standard macbook and the 13" Unibody Macbook Pro. From what I've read they both have the upgraded screen, they're obviously both unibody, both have the large button-less trackpad, and both have the 9400m. They even have the same dimensions and the only difference I can see between the images is a slightly different case bevel (also the firewire and sd card ports, both are useless to me).

Unfortunately, none of the Apple stores or BestBuys in the area have a non-pro unibody 13" Macbook for me to actually handle and compare. So, basically, what makes the pro version with the slower cpu and smaller hard drive at the same price point worth it?
