Dell :: Better For Photo Editing-Inspiron Or Studio
Jan 18, 2010
I have been reading all the comments and most of the tech stuff is over my head, but you all seriously know what you are talking about.
Do you have a suggestions for a laptop for someone who doesn't game, but wants to use as a desktop replacement especially for photo editing. I don't have to lug the thing around

My warranty has no run out so dell can't actually support me. Whenever I try to use the camera the blue light comes on as if to say that it is working but the picture is just black. When I click to take a picture regardless a box pops up that says "Unable to capture a photo. Please reconnect your camera and try again". But if the camera is integrated how can disconnect it? Have tried reinstalling drivers and even the webcam manager itself but it has not worked.

looking to use a computer for image/video editing. Due to 'budget constraints' hah, I am unable to afford a new laptop. I do, however have a Dell Latitude C840. Unfortunately, it has a couple of problems that I hope you, my reader, will be able to help me with. I am hoping for upgrade information. I will list each thing to make it easier to respond to. If you can, please make your suggestions detailed (for example, the exact name of something I can use to upgrade).
Things to upgrade:
1. The speed, as I said, it is very slow with both image and video editing. The computer has a Pentium 4m processor (2 ghz), and 512 mb of ram. Can either of these be upgraded?
2. I am constantly running out of space. I am currently outfitted with a 60 gb hard drive, but I have 33 gb of photos, and I am constantly having to delete photos after uploading them to the external. Is it possible to buy a bigger hard drive?
3. Now, I would be fine just working on my photos right off of my external hard drive, but the slow speed of the usb connection between my computer and the external makes this nearly impossible. I have Usb 1.1 (I think). Is it possible to upgrade my usb port to 2.0?

My work associates like both the 1730 and the new Sager 9261 for gaming and video editing etc. This has caused a real discussion that gets heated. I would like to get some Dell users input. It is true that the Sager has quad core but is 1 pound heavier than the 1730 and the Sager gets only 1 hour or so battery life. What would you say to them?

I'm torn between deciding whether to get a high end cto of a z, sr or fw series laptop for video editing. I am familiar with the fw series. It's very good but weighs a ton and only has ddr2 memory available for it. I'd like to get a high end cto of a z or sr. I see they both go up to 2.8 ghs core 2 duo and use ddr3 memory and have dedicated video cards.
While the builit in screen is not 1080p, it seems big enough for video editing. My concern is performance.

Anyone know of a good cataloging program for photos? Either for cataloging an external hard drive that is full or for cataloging CD's (my collection is on both). I do need to be able to do key word searches as my collection is of railroad photos Oh and I am kind of worried that if I happen to switch back to Windows oneday, this will all be lost, odd of finding one of these that can go both ways?

When I bought my DV6-1264CA last summer, I got the "Artist edition" laptop with BUNDLED software in Windows Vista 64. It came installed on the laptop, no disks. It's nice, it's COREL PAINTSHOP PHOTO X2 (about $89 retail value)
When I got the laptop, I created recovery disks (3DVDs). A few months after, I received the Arvato HP WIN7 upgrade and installed it. I couldn't recover the Paintshop pro.
Now I installed a CLEAN copy of Win7 Home Premium 64 bits ( to avoid the darn created recovery partition PITA) and used the "upgrade" win7 activation key and it works...I browsed the old recovery disks to try to retrieve PAINTSHOP photo X2 to no avail...
The software is interesting and a good value.

I saw a Sony Vaio Z today in a local store, and was incredible impressed with it's weight and size and keyboard.
But if I am going to use it for some video editing(Avid Media Composer) and to play some future games(Dragon Age, COD4 MW2 etc) is it powerful enough .....

I'm looking to get a new Macbook Pro for Christmas and I am pretty decided on everything but processing speed. I will be using my laptop for web design (Adobe Creative Suite CS4-sometimes multiple programs at same time), video editing (Adobe Premiere CS4, Final Cut Pro) and possibly sometime in the next 3-4 years, animation (Maya). I have two 2 TB hard drives and I'd be editing with video footage on them most of the time. Not playing any games. I'm pretty decided on getting a 15" (have one now and like the size for traveling+editing), 320 GB 7200rpm hard drive and 8 GB memory. However I have no idea what processor speed would be best for me between 2.56, 2.66 and 2.8.
What processor do you think would be best for me? Is there a big difference between the three making the higher ones worth the money? Is there anything in my current setup that I should change for optimal results?
Also, you can get a spare battery and use it as a second battery right? I'll be traveling a lot (like round the world) so extra battery time will be needed.

When I open Windows media center all the photos that are installed on computer are still there. They do not come up and display on the HP media smart program. When I go to a space that is to have a photo but is blank, I can press "ctrl and enter" button and that picture and file opens up in windows media center.

I've narrowed my laptop choices down to Studio 15 and Inspiron 13. I've heard a lot about the Studio and its problems but nothing about the Inspiron . But before I make my final choice I want to weigh the pros and cons of each system and go from there. so, what are the pros and cons of each and which would you recommend?

Well I am considering 2 different laptops. I am mainly wanting a laptop for school to type notes. I will use Microsoft Office, web surf, and store music, documents, videos, and pictures. I was trying to keep my budget under $850.
I really like how the the Studio 1558 offers a 9cell battery, better screen, and backlit keyboard but is it really worth the extra $100?
Also if I were to get the Studio I would add the backlit keyboard. Thats just an addition $25.

There both basically the same. Which one would you get? Im going to be getting one of them from best buy in the new few days but dont know which one to get. Im going to be financing it so it has to be from there. They got the 1525 for $750 with a core 2 duo t5750, 3gb ram and 250gb hardrive. I dont know if they got the Studio 15 but on the dell site the configuration seems the same!

The Inspiron 1464 looks thinner, lighter, better designed than the new studio.
The studio is heavier, bigger.

After putting up with countless BSOD's and failed harddrives on the Inspiron 1720, they send me a refurbished Studio 1747. Bigger hard drive space, HD screen, and twice the ram are very enticing to keep this machine. But the Inspiron's GPU AND CPU processors are faster (compare Intel Core i7 720QM processor and ATI Mobility Radeon 4650 graphics to the dual 2.0GHz centrino duo nvidia geforce 8600m GT). And I also found it silly that they would include an HD screen but not a blue-ray disc reader. So since DELL told me over the warranty phone line that they would "match the specs of your [my] old computer," should I just keep this or run some benchmarks on some games and figure this out? I don't want to spend more time on this if I have to if it is common knowledge that I got a good ad deal.
edit: forgot to add that the studio runs windows 7 64bit and inspiron is running w7 32 bit

Does anyone know if the 900p screen on the inspiron 14 is the same as the one on the studio 14z?
It seems like people here are saying the screen on the 14z is great and I was wondering if the same panel is used in the inspiron 14, as that would be the laptop I'd like to buy.

=I'm from Canada and I'm about ready to buy one of these laptop but I'm interested in knowing which laptop between the New Inspiron 15 and the Studio 15 has the better build quality, which one is less likely to eventually fail ? I've read a few topic concerning the Studio, seems like there's some failure here and there but it's tough to tell for the New Inspiron 15, doesn't seem like there's alot of people who have it.
But basically, is it worth spending the extra 100$ to get the Studio even though they have the exact same configuration ?

After getting fed up with my Studio 1535, I sold it and purchased an Inspiron 1420 from Dell Outlet. I sold the
Studio 15 for $445 and purchased the Inspiron 1420 for $467. I got 15% off and free shipping, so that saved me quite a bit of money. Below are my thoughts on the Inspiron 1420 vs. the Studio 1535.
Inspiron 1420 Pros (As opposed to the 1535)
-It is very lightweight. The Studio 15 was a little heavier than I wanted for carrying around at school. I carried it in a messenger bag which started to hurt my shoulder after awhile. The Inspiron 1420 is the perfect weight for school ....

Assuming a vostro, inspiron and studio have the same processor + gfx card, what is the difference between all three? any upgradable components like RAM, HDD, DVDRW, mini-pci, etc doesnt count.
Is there a build difference - I am really liking the new Inspiron 1464 and its brushed metal look, but I want to figure out whether the build is better on a vostro/studio?
