Apple :: New IMacs A Sign Of Things To Come For Discrete GPUs
Oct 20, 2009Looks like Apple's gone all-ATi now for discrete GPUs on the new iMacs. Could this be a sign that going forward, all MacBooks' discrete GPUs will be from ATi?

View 10 RepliesI'm looking for an HD movie/video to download for free somewhere and show off to customers. I work in a future shop and represent apple(if that matters)
All I'm looking for is something short, HD, colorful and PG rated.

Apple's new Core i7-based iMac might be a performance monster, but it looks like the whole family's having some problems getting out of the gate: in addition to the previously-noted performance issues with the Core 2 Duo models, a quick glance across Apple's support forums and on other Mac boards around the web reveals that some machines are showing up DOA and / or with cracked screens. We're a little more familiar with the DOA issue, since the new i7 we just bought doesn't boot at all, but the cracked screen issue seems to be equally common and mostly affecting the bottom left corner, from what we can tell. Now, our review Core 2 Duo 27-inch iMac is perfectly fine, and Chris Ziegler's new Core i7 machine doesn't have any problems either, so these obviously aren't universal issues, but if you're about to stick one of these under the tree for someone it might be wise to do some surreptitious testing first.
Wouldn't surprise me if it was happening during shipping, the box my MBP came in had a big hole in it. (luckily it was double boxed) Maybe they have a problem with their packaging design.
do you think it's a good idea to get an iPad for things you would do on a PC or a MAC? I mean, would you get an iPad instead of a PC or a MAC as in to do the things they would be doing for you? and what do you think of the iPad? what would you use it for?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI just got my new MacBook Pro 15" (with auto graphics switching) and was a bit surprised that the discrete graphics card was always on... so I started investigating what apps might be triggering that! As far as I could tell, I wasn't running anything graphics intensive... so it was a surprise to me what I found out
There are a lot more apps causing this than the ones I listed initially... a more complete and up-to-date list can be found at this thread on MacRumors forums.
It's possible to know what graphics card you're currently using by installing GPUInfoMenu or gfxCardStatus, the latter also allows to force switching from discrete to integrated, or vice-versa.
There are files in my Recovery that are not supposed to be there. When I try to delete them, the computer will not let me.

I was wondering what folks are doing for the Webcam and Ambient Light Sensor?
Do these things work properly after a Win7 install (without Dell Drivers) or are you guys using the Vista Drivers off Dell's site for these two things
Acer's site does not list them. I was hoping they would be available by now.
So far a few with i3s have shown up in Amazon, but no sight of models with the i5.
Are Aspire models good for extended periods of time? Like 7 hours.
This is weird, only just noticed it. The dv7t is not really a dv7t anymore. Its screen ratio has changed. And is now available with ATI HD45xx and 46xx GPUs. Oh and, Quad Core Intel CPUs.

I always put 8 degree offset on my 2500M/7900GTX. I never questioned it before. But couple of days ago a guy wrote this on this forum (read bellow), so can someone comment or clarify this for me?
"I hit 87C in Crysis, so you're doing damn good there. DON'T use an 8 degree offset in FanGUI. ATITool reports wrong temps. To prove this, put your system to sleep long enough for all components to reach room temperature. Resume the system and immediately bring up FanGUI. You'll see with an offset that the GPU is for some reason about 8 degrees higher, when everything should be at room temperature. If you have no offset and then resume, you'll see that your temps are nearly identical, which they should be from a cold start up."

There's been plenty of coverage surrounding Nvidia's admitted "abnormal failure rate" among what remains an unknown number of GPUs, but in case you missed it, here's the Cliff Notes version: Earlier this summer, Nvidia announced it would take a one time hit of $150-$200 million to cover warrany and repair costs associated with a bad batch of mobile GPUs. The chip maker insisted (and still does) that the failures were an isolated incident, but that's come into question. News and rumor site The Inquirer has been particularly vocal in its questioning of how widespread the problem really is, bringing up the possibility that the defective parts could be affecting both mobile and desktop parts, including G92 and G94 based GPUs.
Now that you're caught up, it's TGDaily who's bringing more speculation to the table. Referencing industry sources, the news site claims that Nvidia's future 45nm GPUs that have recently entered the qualification stage are being built with high-lead solder bumps. Earlier speculation pointed to Nvidia having made the switch to eutecic solders in reaction to the GPU failures, and if that's the case, the switch to solder bumps raises more questions than answers as to what's going on, and whether or not the problem has been solved or is ongoing.
I just bought Lenovo G510 Laptop with Intel HD 4600 and Radeon 8750M. Everything fine exept the fact it doesn't switches GPUs when I play games. I tried everything. I set it the max performence when pluged in to AC and I set it to use max performance when playing games. Nothing works, the games show that the Intel GPU is working and the Radeon not. I have the latest drivers from Lenovo, I searched over the internet, nothing works. I just cant get the 8750M to work.Â
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'll be buying an XPS M1330 soon. The only option I'm still confused on is the graphics card. I'm not a gamer and battery life is important to me as I'm on the road every week for work. However, with Vista now - which I have no experience with - is it true that you need a discrete graphics card to efficiently run Vista (and I guess certain options such as Aero).
Specifically, my questions are:
1. Will an integrated graphics card impair the ability to use Vista in any way and, if so, how?
2. What's the difference in battery life when using a dedicated vs integrated graphics card? I.e., how much extra battery life will I gain by choosing integrated?
3. Will an integrated graphics card cause my system to just not operate as efficiently in general - just every day navigating even - since Vista relies so heavily on graphics? And, if so, how does any inefficiency manifest itself? Slower time bringing up screens? Computer running hot because of a strain using graphics?
Subject says it all - 1555 appeared in UK this morning but only has
15.6in Widescreen High Definition (1366x768) WLED with TrueLife
I posted about a week ago about WXGA+ suddenly dropping off the 15.4" version and was hopeful of holding out and getting a higher res option with the 1555. No such luck.
I have a 1340 with the nvidia 9500m.
The thing is: I use Linux and I don't really care for the discrete card nor this whole SLI thing.
I am fine with the 9400 only, but I got the laptop with the 9500 in a promotion and they only had this option.
As I use Linux and there's no support from nvidia to SLI, the discrete card even though useless consumes power lessening the battery life and running the computer warmer.
I just went to the Dell US site to configure a 15 Studio laptop and notice when you go to configure the laptop the only choice for graphics is the integrated 4500HD!
View 10 Replies View RelatedThe Travelmate business line of computers that are based off of the Timeline series have discrete ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 4330 graphics cards. I think there are even some models in the European market that have the ATI graphics card.
Do you think it would be possible to install a graphics card like the HD 4330 into a 3810T (13.3" Timeline) or a 4810T (14.1" Timeline) notebook?
Is it even possible to do this with any notebook?
I'm leaning towards a 4810T as my first choices (the Asus P30A and Acer Travelmate 8371) have not been invited to the Canadian market. The only thing that holds me back is the integrated graphics card. Should I hold my breath and wait for a Timeline notebook with a discrete graphics card?
Why would Acer be reluctant to release a Timeline esque notebook in North America with a discrete graphics card? The ATI card doesn't suck up that much power.
Can anyone please tell me how to find the pound sign on my Dell Latitude laptop.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm thinking of buying a Thinkpad E540 with a discrete nvidia gpu. I am planning to install linux on it and I don't really need optimus for it (nor is it well supported) but I'd like to occasionally be able to use it on windows.
Â
I'd like to know if it's possible to completely turn off the nvidia gpu from the BIOS so it works only with the integrated intel one or should I buy one with intel gpu only.
Â
I have read that the lenovo changed the dual gpu implementation on the latest generation thinkpads.
I am new to having a thinkpad and I know that my system has a the intigrated graphics and the discrete nvidia nvs 3100m Optimus card. Here is the issue though. Â I have been trying to run some programs that are more video oriented (gaming). I discovered that my system is only reading the intigrated graphics and doesn't even acknowledge that the nvidia card is there. Â
I have updated to the latest drivers and checked the Bios to make sure things are there. Â Sadly they are not. Â I looked at the bios, followed the directions I found on the forum to set that to card to on only to find that the the only card it recognizes is the intigrated graphics. Â So the question is, how do I get the bios and the computer in general to recognize the nvidia card on my T410 (2522)?

After a bit of research I managed to do an electrostatic discharge unplugging everything attached to my laptop, removing the AC adapter and the battery, and pressing the power button for about a minute, past that minute I plugged the AC adapter and pressed the power button, it turned on for about a second, it was pretty much a blink. Then everything was the same. I tried discharging again, several times, without success.
