Dell :: New Nvidia GPUs Use Older Solder Bumps To Avoid Failure

Sep 18, 2008

from [url]

There's been plenty of coverage surrounding Nvidia's admitted "abnormal failure rate" among what remains an unknown number of GPUs, but in case you missed it, here's the Cliff Notes version: Earlier this summer, Nvidia announced it would take a one time hit of $150-$200 million to cover warrany and repair costs associated with a bad batch of mobile GPUs. The chip maker insisted (and still does) that the failures were an isolated incident, but that's come into question. News and rumor site The Inquirer has been particularly vocal in its questioning of how widespread the problem really is, bringing up the possibility that the defective parts could be affecting both mobile and desktop parts, including G92 and G94 based GPUs.

Now that you're caught up, it's TGDaily who's bringing more speculation to the table. Referencing industry sources, the news site claims that Nvidia's future 45nm GPUs that have recently entered the qualification stage are being built with high-lead solder bumps. Earlier speculation pointed to Nvidia having made the switch to eutecic solders in reaction to the GPU failures, and if that's the case, the switch to solder bumps raises more questions than answers as to what's going on, and whether or not the problem has been solved or is ongoing.

Dell :: Is The 8 Degree Offset On FanGUI Correct For Nvidia GPUs

Dec 26, 2007

I always put 8 degree offset on my 2500M/7900GTX. I never questioned it before. But couple of days ago a guy wrote this on this forum (read bellow), so can someone comment or clarify this for me?

"I hit 87C in Crysis, so you're doing damn good there. DON'T use an 8 degree offset in FanGUI. ATITool reports wrong temps. To prove this, put your system to sleep long enough for all components to reach room temperature. Resume the system and immediately bring up FanGUI. You'll see with an offset that the GPU is for some reason about 8 degrees higher, when everything should be at room temperature. If you have no offset and then resume, you'll see that your temps are nearly identical, which they should be from a cold start up."

Apple :: Failure Of Nvidia Gpu In New Unibody Macbook's

May 18, 2009

this might've been asked but do the new unibody macbook/macbook pro gpu's (9400m, 9600m gt) have the same problems in manufacturing that caused higher than normal gpu chip failures in the last generation of nvidia gpu's (8-series)?

i've heard so much bad press about those chips but i'm not sure if nvidia has fixed the issue with their current 9-series chips.

Sony :: Vaio VGN-SZ780 NVidia 8400M GPU Failure

Aug 15, 2009

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-SZ780 that passed its 1 year warranty a few months ago.

My laptop was experiencing overheating and would either reboot suddenly after the blue screen of death or would just shut down in the middle when using the nvidia 8400 GPU.

From Sony's explanation, I read that the shutdown of the system is a normal behavior under high temperature and I assumed it was not a problem and just an inconvenience.

Just 30 minutes ago, my laptop screen turn white completely and froze so I shut down the system immediately and since then, my SZ780 DOES NOT BOOT when using the Nvidia GPU!

Sony's recent replacement annoucement of defective Nvidia GPUs EXCLUDE the SZ models so for me, I have no additional warranty that can cover this.

Dell :: How Do I Avoid The 15% Restocking Fee?

Jul 29, 2009

So I ordered a Dell Studio XPS 1640 laptop and I tried to cancel it, but they already stated that it went into production and so not one person of any position and department would cancel it.

I recieved the laptop just a couple days ago and just got to calling Dell to return it.

I just called and the lady stated a 15% Restocking fee would apply to this return of the laptop that is over $300!

How do I avoid this 15% Restocking fee? I also ordered the 9-cell battery with the laptop, how do I avoid that Restocking fee?

Dell :: Avoid Or At Least Gaming On Laptops

Dec 15, 2009

I recently had the pleasure of having a laptop (inspiron 1520) crap out on me after only just two years (i bought it November 2007). I had a laptop cooler and used the laptop for ocassional LAN parties, gaming and also to do my homework until I broke. I know some of you might say it's my fault for not buying the extended warrenty but come on, a $1300 dollar machine should last at least four years with normal care. That's the least I expect from a normal laptop. Is that too much to ask for? Anyway after that whole expierience I'll never get another laptop for gaming again, especially from Dell.

If you are considering buying a laptop for gaming consider other options unless you really need to game on the go.

Flame on Dell lovers and laptop gamers!

Dell :: New Brick, Older Precision

Mar 11, 2010

guys, can I use the new 210watt power brick with the M6300? and does it weigh less, or is there an after market solution outthere?

I still occasionally use an old 90watt brick but just for short times as it gets hotter than hell.

I'm trying to cut down travel weight, hence the new brick.

Looking ahead I think my next laptop would be something like the M4500 (dropping down a size for mobility) or something from HP. I don't game on laptop anymore, well nothing more than old titles, so just need fast CPU and good screen and something better than integrated.

Dell :: Precision M4300 Installed The NVIDIA Drivers For The NVidia Quadro FX 360M ...

Dec 29, 2008

I recently got a Dell Precision M4300 from a friend and had a few questions.

When i got the laptop, I reformatted the Laptop and Reinstalled Windows XP Pro SP2. I proceeded from Microsoft to Update to SP3 and so on.

Well I also Went to Dell's Website and downloaded all the necessary drivers (using the service tag) for this laptop and installed them.

Now here is where I ran into a problem,

When I installed the NVIDIA drivers for the NVidia Quadro FX 360M video card, everything seemed to go fine. Then I rebooted the Laptop, and now every time I reboot, my hardware acceleration is defaulted back to None, and it gives me multiple pop ups about this issue. I go into the settings and turn the Acceleration back to full and it goes away.

This is a major problem, and is really frustrating to deal with everytime the laptop is booted up.

My other problem, is when I open up Internet Explorer, It tends to lock up the browser for no reason when Loading a website. I then CTRL+ALT+DEL and attempt to close iexplore.exe via the task manager. It closes the browser but does not shut down the browser, making it impossible to browse, so then I have to reboot.

here are the specs of the PC, from the device manager and drivers I have gotten

Dell Precision M4300
NVidia Quadro FX 360M 512mb Video Graphics Card
TSST 8x dvd+-R burner
120GB Hard Drive
3.5GB of Ram
2.5GHZ T9300 Core 2 Duo Processor
1394 Port
2 USB ports
External Monitor Ports
Wifi Support
Bluetooth Support
Windows XP SP2 Pro

HP/Compaq :: Working With An Older Computer

Jan 20, 2009

about an older HP Compaq computer I'm running here.

It's a desktop for starters, a Compaq Presario SR1810NX. I've been using it for about two years now, and have run through all of the most current updates (to my knowledge). The only problem is, until tax refunds come back (blah, blah), I won't have a new laptop to game on.

So my question is this, two years ago after I first purchased it, I could run (most) games on their highest setting while still running more than decent FPS. I'm looking at it now, and it can barely sustain anything anymore. What used to be max settings and 60 fps is World of Warcraft is now only lowest settings with a meek 12 fps. Is there anything that could cause this? I've upgraded the ram to 1G, as this is a shared family computer, and putting more money into a pre-built computer isn't my idea of fun. Is it just the two years of wear and tear that have brought it to this condition? Currently, what am I looking at to solve the problem? I can edit the post if my DXdiag is needed.

Sony :: Beefing Up An Older VGN SZ-370P Laptop

Sep 13, 2009

I am trying to figure out a way to upgrade different components on this older machine the VGN SZ-370P, which unfortunately is not appearing easy to do.

Searches on this and other forums have either not yielded much results, or some with thousands of pages that I couldn't possibly read, hence my questions here,
apologies if they have already been answered.

The original specs for this late 2006 model are 2 Gigs of RAM (max) , NVIDIA® GeForce Go 7400 128 Meg, and a 2.0 GHz T7200 Core 2 Duo processor, FSB Speed: 667MHz.

I have already upgraded the hard drive to a larger 7200 rpm unit, and re-installed a clean, uncluttered Windows XP system as per this most excellent tutorial,
as well as gone dual-boot with Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty.

Can the graphics card be upgraded to the 256-Meg model of same (gaming is difficult with 128 Megs)? Can the T7200 processor be swapped for a faster one, and if so with what gains? (like a T7600 Merom at 2.33 GHz, looks expensive at around $250 on eBay)Is there a way to overclock this machine to try and yet squeeze a bit more performance out of it?Will Windows 7 run on it, or are there missing drivers for some of the hardware?

Having invested in accessories like docking station and so on, I would love to be able to get a bit more useful life out of it, as it had been a lovely machine otherwise.

Sony :: Expanding Hard Drive Space On Older SSD TZ

Nov 5, 2009

I've got a TZ-195 which is about two years old. It has a 48gig SSD drive which was just too small to accomodate data plus a biggish .pst file for using Outlook offline. I bought a TT-190 with a 128gig drive which solved the problem, and left the TZ lying around.

Now the TT is on the fritz (won't boot up) and I want to revive the TZ so I can use it while the TT is being fixed.

What is the best way to expand the storage space?

1. Swap out the SSD drive for a bigger one.

2. Plug in a 32gig ExpressCard drive.

3. Install a Mini PCI Express drive (like from an eee) in the one empty Mini PCI slot.

Easiest and cheapest by far is Option 2. But I am thinking this is going to have a very slow data transfer rate? The Express Card standard allows either USB or PCI bus to be used, but as far as I know the ExpressCard SSD drives all use the slower USB bus. Or will it not be enough to make a difference, given that all my programs will be on the main hard drive?
