Jul 19, 2009
I've realized that I need to replace my MBP superdrive, this is the late 2007 MBP.
I went into About this Mac and then More Info
The disc burning is listed as
MATA DVD-R UJ-857E:
and the only parts I can find on ebay are the UJ-857C

notice the letter difference, since im a n00b at the whole apple parts things i was just wondering if this is the correct part to replace my drive with?

I am pretty sure the optical drive on my MBP is failing as I am having trouble installing software like windows, office for mac, and just burning stuff. So, I did a search here and look it up at ifix it, but I am not sure what is the right model I should be looking at. I have the first gen MBP with the Core Duo CPU. iFix it lists two models UJ-857-C and UJ-867. So, will both work or is one of them only going to work? I know my original optical drive could not burn DL dvds, but it seems like both of these can though?

I just bought a MBA and don't want to pay for an external drive that won't work on any other laptop. Does anyone know if there are any third party external DVD burners that will work with the MBA?

I'm recently doing a lot of video editing stuff so...
I burned a video file to a CD and tried to play it off the CD to test it, but the read speed is so slow that it keeps on lagging. And when I try to copy the file back to disk (me and my paranoid testing), it also says its gonna take like 2 minutes even though its only ~160MB.
And when I'm importing a CD into iTunes, it won't go much faster than like 8x.
Is this normal? I'm plugged into the wall if that makes any difference. I ask especially because the rated read speed according to the Apple website is 24x.

I've been off the forums for quite a while now, but it's great to be back and part of the discussion again. I missed this place!
So I've got a discussion topic:
How easy is it to swap your internal HDD and put it in the SuperDrive slot? Has anyone done this? Can this be done in-house without having to send my computer away?
I'm talking uMBP 15" - the one where you can actually open the battery pack out and flush the HDD (and ram) out.
I'm thinking of buying a SSD for my main (boot) drive and having the 320GB one swapped with the SuperDrive.

It seems most of the people I know who do a lot of burning and use of their superdrive's on the macbook pros are buying external optical drives because the internal optical drive in the mac is failing (not responsive or working anymore).
I'm just wondering, for expensive as Macs are, why is it that this is happening? I thought with the price one could expect high quality parts and not parts that fail within the first two years of owning the laptop.

It's been doing this for a while... Whenever it boots up, returns from sleep, anything, it does this. There is no disk in the drive...

My son's MacBook Pro (15 inch) has a case warp problem that's probably caused by something in the superdrive pushing out the plastic strip on the front of the laptop. I suggested taking it to the Apple Store to see what it would cost to fix (probably a Superdrive replacement at a minimum). I also asked him if he'd like a new 15 inch MBP but he likes his current system despite the problems. It has a Windows XP partition and all of the software that he likes on it which would have to be moved over. I'm disappointed with this generation MBP with the nVidia problem, the failed superdrive and now the current problem.
I have the 17 inch model of the same generation but I haven't had any problems with mine. I'd personally just prefer getting him a new one and I might just go ahead and get one and set it up (he's at a university for the summer and uses his MBP for his job there).
In general, are the Aluminum MBPs more problem free than the previous generation plastic models? Are there fewer Superdrive issues?

Alright so I just want to know if I should be worried or not about this:
Lately, when I open the lid, the drive starts "moaning". You know that sound as if you just inserted a CD or DVD into it. It does it three times with a couple of seconds gap in between.
It still reads just fine, I just tried it with a DVD, but I'm still concerned about the sound.
Usually there is just a small and short sound when opening the lid, just like when booting up, when (as much as I can figure) the head realigns to center.

I need to replace the broken screen on my late 2006 Black Macbook. The thing is I do not know which screen to buy. It would appear that the Macbook was sold with various different screens.
I was just wondering which one was the best? I heard that the Samsung one was terrible. I think the others were LG Philips and AUO, there could have been others Im not sure. As I am replacing it I want to get the best one.

I currently have everything I ever need on one laptop -- a mid-2009 15" MBP. Having had a slew of hard drive problems over the past few years, and given that such disks are regularly the source of problems (before, say, a logic board), I'm considering purchasing a spare hard drive and keeping it, or the one in my machine, as a backup disk for the day when my current drive dies. The closest Apple store is ~45 minutes away, and I'm perfectly capable of doing my own computer surgery. An inoperable laptop would be a pretty significant problem for me.
So basically, my questions are twofold:
- From perusing the hard drive threads a few months back here in the Apple forum, it seems like WD's Scorpio Blue (500 GB, 5400 RPM) is the popular choice. Given the time that's elapsed since its release (and the thinning of hard drive threads after the last "big one" I found), are there any other drives, SSD or standard, that can beat it in terms of power usage / noise / performance overall without gouging the bill too much?
- I use Time Machine with a Time Capsule to keep everything nice and backed up, but an HD/SSD swap would be best done with an image of my entire drive. Is Carbon Copy Cloner still the go-to for that?

I'm having a tough time replacing the hard drive in my dell xt. The hard drive (a pata 80gb) started stuttering so I had a replacement sent out.
The replacement has a cable that is a female connector and my connector from the motherboard is a female also so it won't connect.
My original connector had sensitive copper pins that I broke when doing this install so I can't use that one.

I read lots of people getting replacements for their 2-4 yr old laptops with Dell warranty. I've been using my e1505 since June 2007 and just ordered 1558 last weekend, but with only 1-yr basic warranty.
Which warranties are those people using? Premium or Advanced? Which is comparable to "Complete Care"? Also, would it be cheaper to buy more expensive warranty at the checkout or buy extension once I receive the system?
Warranties cost only a few hundred dollars and people just seem to be getting amazing replacement laptops, like e1505 to SXPS 16.

I ask because i was offered a m1730 straight replacement but with a 8700 card rather than a 8800 which i have in my machine.
They said the card would be replaced at a later date. Does that count as an equal exchange?

After some issues i had with my GPU, Dell agreed to replace both my Heatsink and Motherboard, and i wanted to ask those who have had replacements in the past; has anything changed since july 2008? (when i bought my m1530)
have they improved the heatsink, or even changed it? ( i got the aluminum one, crappy piece of engineering right there )
and im sure the GPU issues are still present, but do they run cooler now ?
im asking this because in July the "defective Nvidia GPUs" were still in the dark, and the news about them was a mere rumor...

Have finally got Dell to agree to replace my motherboard (my 3rd in 18 months), but they say I also need a new heatsink/fan to fix my overheating GPU problems (100 degrees + under load).
They are doing the motherboard under warranty, but refusing to pay for the heatsink. According to them, the two issues are not connected...
My question is, is there any point having the heatsink replaced if it's just going to be the same defective component?

I have to buy a new notebook for work before July - before the money disappears. Wondering if anyone has any info if Dell will have any new Latitudes out by then or not. I am looking at the 14" size.
I could not find any roadmaps that showed if there are any mainstream quadcores on the horizon.

So i called Dell today to try and get a replacement for my broken XPS and was told that although my laptop would probably have qualified for a replacement, it has been too long since the last repair for it to qualify.
The rep said that in order for a replacement to be issued the laptop must break within only 1 month of the repair. So after about 1.5 hours on the phone i am getting a guy to come fix it within the next couple of days.
I still want a replacement as this laptop no longer fits with my needs and i know it will break down eventually again anyways whether it be in a month or in a year.

I have read a lot of posts which refer to faulty laptop replacement within the first 21 days of ownership. I am in the UK and recall that when I bought a Dell 20" monitor a few years back there was a limitation of 30 days for replacement with a new item.
Following that period, any replacement would be a re-furbished unit. During the 30 day period Dell sent me 3 replacement monitors before I got one with acceptable backlight bleed. They kept sending them without picking up the previous ones. Eventually they arranged a time to collect all the less than perfect monitors.
Can someone post a link to this policy of replacement with new for the first 21 or 30 days only? I have read the Customer Master Service Agreement, the Basic Hardware Support and the XPS NBD Warranty, but I can still find no reference to this policy.
