I am pretty sure the optical drive on my MBP is failing as I am having trouble installing software like windows, office for mac, and just burning stuff. So, I did a search here and look it up at ifix it, but I am not sure what is the right model I should be looking at. I have the first gen MBP with the Core Duo CPU. iFix it lists two models UJ-857-C and UJ-867. So, will both work or is one of them only going to work? I know my original optical drive could not burn DL dvds, but it seems like both of these can though?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just bought a MBA and don't want to pay for an external drive that won't work on any other laptop. Does anyone know if there are any third party external DVD burners that will work with the MBA?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've realized that I need to replace my MBP superdrive, this is the late 2007 MBP.
I went into About this Mac and then More Info
The disc burning is listed as
MATA DVD-R UJ-857E:
and the only parts I can find on ebay are the UJ-857C

notice the letter difference, since im a n00b at the whole apple parts things i was just wondering if this is the correct part to replace my drive with?
I'm recently doing a lot of video editing stuff so...
I burned a video file to a CD and tried to play it off the CD to test it, but the read speed is so slow that it keeps on lagging. And when I try to copy the file back to disk (me and my paranoid testing), it also says its gonna take like 2 minutes even though its only ~160MB.
And when I'm importing a CD into iTunes, it won't go much faster than like 8x.
Is this normal? I'm plugged into the wall if that makes any difference. I ask especially because the rated read speed according to the Apple website is 24x.
I've been off the forums for quite a while now, but it's great to be back and part of the discussion again. I missed this place!
So I've got a discussion topic:
How easy is it to swap your internal HDD and put it in the SuperDrive slot? Has anyone done this? Can this be done in-house without having to send my computer away?
I'm talking uMBP 15" - the one where you can actually open the battery pack out and flush the HDD (and ram) out.
I'm thinking of buying a SSD for my main (boot) drive and having the 320GB one swapped with the SuperDrive.
It seems most of the people I know who do a lot of burning and use of their superdrive's on the macbook pros are buying external optical drives because the internal optical drive in the mac is failing (not responsive or working anymore).
I'm just wondering, for expensive as Macs are, why is it that this is happening? I thought with the price one could expect high quality parts and not parts that fail within the first two years of owning the laptop.
My son's MacBook Pro (15 inch) has a case warp problem that's probably caused by something in the superdrive pushing out the plastic strip on the front of the laptop. I suggested taking it to the Apple Store to see what it would cost to fix (probably a Superdrive replacement at a minimum). I also asked him if he'd like a new 15 inch MBP but he likes his current system despite the problems. It has a Windows XP partition and all of the software that he likes on it which would have to be moved over. I'm disappointed with this generation MBP with the nVidia problem, the failed superdrive and now the current problem.
I have the 17 inch model of the same generation but I haven't had any problems with mine. I'd personally just prefer getting him a new one and I might just go ahead and get one and set it up (he's at a university for the summer and uses his MBP for his job there).
In general, are the Aluminum MBPs more problem free than the previous generation plastic models? Are there fewer Superdrive issues?
Alright so I just want to know if I should be worried or not about this:
Lately, when I open the lid, the drive starts "moaning". You know that sound as if you just inserted a CD or DVD into it. It does it three times with a couple of seconds gap in between.
It still reads just fine, I just tried it with a DVD, but I'm still concerned about the sound.
Usually there is just a small and short sound when opening the lid, just like when booting up, when (as much as I can figure) the head realigns to center.
Does anyone know of a App that can boot into bootcamp from OS X, So I don't have to wait and hold option, I can just click the App or something in the menu bar and it will boot into bootcamp?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to compel Dell to issue a return authorization for an item, but they've been evasive for over a week now. I looked up some posts on the subject, and it got me to wondering if I should even continue to pursue it.
If they were to eventually allow me to return the item, what happens? Do they give me a shipping label and arrange for a pickup themselves? Is it possible they will charge me for shipping outright, or if I can't be available at the pickup time they schedule, will they charge me for shipping then? I guess, basically, if they offer the return, can I still decide not to return it, or will they penalize me somehow?
The item really isn't worth that much for me to have to pay for shipping, or anything, so if there's any chance they might charge me for something, I'd rather not take the risk. Is there any chance they could slap me with an extra charge just for requesting to return something?
i'm looking into getting another studio 1555 to see if it has the same fan issues mine has.
If it does, i would most likely return it, but if it doesn't i'll keep it and sell mine. Was just wondering if they offer free returns or if there's a restocking fee.
I have a MBP (Oct 2008 Model 2.53Mhz with 4gig ram)
I have recently had a problem where the computer (when lid is open and computer goes to sleep) will not come out of sleep. The sceen stays blank and will not wake up (odd, when screen is closed-- it will wake up from sleep mode, just not when computer goes to sleep with lid open). No key actions will prompt a wake up and I have to do a hard shut down with the power button.
Computer is running "Snow Leopard" (installed when Snow Leopard was released) and everything else has been running fine.
I have done a "Permissions Repair" to date
I've noticed a strange occurrence with my MBP (unibody late 2009 model, 3 weeks old).
It's happened since purchase and It's intermittent and hard to isolate, but I'd like to hear if anyone has noticed this too or a potential fix. It could totally be normal.
Essentially what is happening is that my MBP's fan will sometimes ramp up to around 2700rpm after waking from sleep (typical unloaded speed is ~1900rpm). It will then slowly speed down to the typical fan speed a couple minutes afterwards.
It seems that it occurs only in battery mode and when:
a) It is used on material surface, ie couch or bed OR
b) It is woken quickly after entering sleep
I haven't noticed this happening when plugged into AC, perhaps because it's always on a desk when on AC?
What I've done to try : resetting the PRAM, logic, etc, reinstalled the OS (in case a software issue).
How often do u recommend shutting down a mac? I usually just keep it in sleep mode until i want to use it again. is this bad?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have my MBP set to put the screen to sleep after 5 mins of inactivity and system to sleep after 10 mins.
This works fine when not plugged in, but when connected to the power the screen goes to sleep but not the computer.
I am not running any apps in the background except Quicksilver...
I have a Macbook Pro (17" Penryn model just before the unibody one) and it's been working great so far until recently...
Lately it's been randomly going into sleep mode and waking up just as randomly as if nothing happened. Someone told me its a RAM issue, but i'm sure it cant be that since that will usually shut the mac down instead of putting it on standby.
I got the new aluminum macbook 2.4ghz and it is taking a long time to go to sleep. I cant figure out what it is. I close my lid and the apple logo takes about 4 seconds until is shuts off and another 30 seconds until the light starts to fade in and out. I've shut the lid of another macbook at an apple shop and they go to sleep instantly.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI left my 15" (late 2008) MacBook Pro in sleep for a few days, and when I opened it again today there are red dots flickering across shades of black on my external monitor, with both the 9600M and the 9400M. Since so many people leave their MacBook Pro on all of the time (I don't usually), I'm assuming that I haven't damaged anything. My MacBook Pro didn't seem hot, either. After restarting my MBP (and installing the new updates), the flickering red dots are still there.
Do you think that this will go away if I leave the system off for a day or that the logic board/video card is permanently damaged? I really, really don't trust that the Genius Bar could do a repair without damaging my MBP, and I really never take it anywhere so I wouldn't have a way to bring my MBP in that I would be happy with without spending money on a case. What are the chances that I could get a replacement MacBook Pro or a $2500 credit? I figure that a Mac Pro or an iMac would suit me better, anyway, since I don't travel with my MacBook Pro. My MBP is in pristine condition (you literally wouldn't be able to tell between mine and a brand new MBP) partly because I always have it hooked up to an external keyboard, mouse, and monitor, and because I prefer it that way, it helps resale as well. I wouldn't want to be dissatisfied with a repair for a $2500 system, which I could already see happening, so I'd really just like a replacement system if this problem doesn't go away...
it happened two times today, the screen went totally black, the fans stop working and the "sleep lights" turned on and off. Soon after the disc drive made the sound that id usually makes when turning the computer on.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a new XPS 1340, That seems to be having issues with starting up in the wee hours. Monday morning 4:30am I woke up for work, looked over at the Laptop sitting on the desk and the side hinge lights were on.opened screen and saw the login page. I always shut my computer down completely I don't use the hibernate feature.
Several Times last week I noticed when I came home from work and powered up the laptop instead of "starting Windows" it said "resuming Windows". I really don't know if this just started or has been this way since day one. I do know that the battery level always indicates 100% when I shut down and when I start up it's down to about 92% from just sitting turned off? Again I don't use hibernate I "Shut down". using windows 7.
Are their scheduled tasks that can start my machine I have noticed about 34 scheduled tasks in the scheduler can't quite undertsand why so many tasks come pre loaded. Anyway, most have never executed can I just delete them?any help, suggestions, greatly appreciated.
Spent the past 45 min trying to talk to Dell, been on hold guess lunch time is a bad idea.
Could I have a Progrram that is trying to "auto run once" ?
It won't boot and shows only lines across the black screen or blurs when HDD is plugged in.
When i remove HDD (any HDD, i've tried three so far), laptop boots to BIOS.
I have a Dell Inspiron N5010 and about one year ago it starting booting slowly. I created a second partition and installed a vanilla Windows 7 on it and booted into it and it still boots slowly.I've tried every form of optimization that various sites, including you, have told other people in forums. Drivers, defragmentation, chmod, and various other things I can't remember.
It takes about 3-5 minutes for a cold boot and about 9 minutes from hibernation. Sleep mode works normally.I don't know what the issue could be. There's only two more things I have not done: backup and reformat the whole drive and update bios.I have recorded me starting my laptop in safe-mode to show that the drivers load very slowly: URL...
I hope to find an answer here, I have an Acer Aspire 8930G. It came with Windows Vista but I bought Windows 7. I installed it and it runs fine up to the last boot (right after the accountname and internetconnection questions) After it boots it will go to the recovery straigt away. I called Acer and the guy was a man of few words, he basically just told me it couldn't be installed unless it was a Windows 7 bought from Acer. Is this really the case that Acer is like all those horrible telecomcompanies with their customized firmwares?
View 15 Replies View RelatedMy Acer Aspire 7520G suddenly refused to boot, leaving blank screen only. No boot logo or anything. However, after googling around a bit, I found one thread with a solution, which is to press hard around the touchpad, and to my big surprise it did indeed work.
So does anyone know what's wrong with the computer that behaves this way? I never found the cause, and before I start disassembling the laptop, it would be nice to know what to look for. (Can't take it to the service as warranty expired a couple of months ago)
I used the nVidia VGA BIOS mod a few weeks ago, this is probably not my problem, though. I booted blindly using the USB stick (had to remove the HDD) and flashed the old BIOS, yet I still get a blank screen.
Before this happened, my laptop was acting really sluggish for some reason, so I thought I should restart to fix it, I did that and it came up as a blank screen! First restart, it seemed to boot to the OS, next time, it did not.
It's pretty much like the 5315 post (what a coincidence).
Windows 7 by the way
I have a laptop model inspiron 1564.it didnt want to boot up at all.took battery out and put back in. And now it boots up but it beeps 5 times then boots up.
