Dell :: Are Adding A ATI 4XXX GPU Is The Studio XPS Anytime
Mar 11, 2009
iv notived that the studio 15 (1555) is getting a upgrade soon and a slight design change, and maybe the 17" studio too. the studio 15" is getting the 4570 soon and maybe the studio will get a better one too.
so will the studio ps get a new GPU too?
it would be amusing to see a low budget 15" multimedia laptop perform near dells high end gaming/multimedia made for performance and quality.
also even more funny to see a studio 17" maybe beat it.
i find it stupid how only MSI have started using the 4XXX ATI cards when they are so good.
some companies are on 3XXX still, its been like over ayears and a half now.
the FW wont get a 4XXX GPU and i need a upgrade now at my pc is a pain.

Anyone heard of Dell upgrading the Studio XPS 16 with one of ATI's new video cards?

Is the Dell Studio XPS 16 getting a graphics card upgrade anytime soon? I'm thinking about buying one soon, I really like 'em but the graphics card is the slowest thing in it for me. I know it's a multimedia laptop, not a gaming laptop but cmon now. On Dell's page, GAMING is the biggest keyword for this laptop. ATI HD 4670 is last gen and DX 11 is upon us. Competitor HP Envy 15 is already using the HD 5830. So can we expect a graphics card upgrade anytime soon from Dell?

I've been thinking of getting a Studio XPS 16.
However, before I buy one I want to know if there's been any word on dell refreshing the CPU or chipset on this model? I would rather wait 6 months to buy a new laptop than to buy it and have a newer model come out.
It's been a while since I kept up with the latest mobile processors and chipsets. I found a powerpoint presentation that indicated Intel would release the T9900 in the second half of 2009, but not sure if this would also include new chipset.

I ordered my 1737 with a 160gb main drive, knowing I could buy a larger one at a later date and install it as a second drive.
I understand in order to do this I'll need a special cradle and connector for the second drive bay.
Where can I get these in the UK? I've searched the Dell site and can't find anything even remotely like what I need!

I purchased a refurbished Dell Studio 17 laptop today from Dell Outlet. I know if you buy one new, you can add Sprint WWAN, but can this feature be added to a refurbished model at a later date

If this is true then the Studio XPS will most likely also get an upgrade.

You look at the wattage of the desktop versions of the cards and its insane. 165 watts for the 8800 gtx. [url]
the 7xxx cards didn't drain anywhere close to that much, the 78xx around 90watts peak and the 79xx 80watts.[url]
Nvidia and ATI have both been criticized for their lack of performance per watt in their dx10 cards over any previous generation, and its seems to be directly turning around in the mobile market.
It seems they can try and severely limit the stream processors (32 in 8700m gt compared to 128 in 8800gtx) and the memory bandwidth to compensate on a technology that is just built on power consumption.
And of course, even if notebooks can give that much AC power, the problem of heat still remains. People may be waiting for nothing, at least not in the near future until the next round of nvidia cards are released (maybe the jump from 88xx to 89xx will provide much more power savings than 78xx to 79xx) and allow dx10 tech to truly hit the mobile market.
corrected 8700m gt processors

Has anyone done this on an Acer laptop? I recently bought a 5515 for my parents and after seeing all the bloatware that came on it I figured I'd do a clean OS install. I backed up the CD Key using the ABR utility and backed up all the drivers. I then started the new OS install and get all the way to "completing installation" and it sits there spinning for a good 20-30 mins before it freezes. I tried the 32 bit version first followed by the 64 bit and had no luck either try. I eventually reinstalled the factory settings using the recovery disc.

I bought my Wife a m1730 with a single 320gb drive a few months ago and she's already filled it up.
Do I need to buy a kit from dell or is all the mounting equipment there already for adding a 2nd drive? Also, what drives do you recommend for the m1730?

This is more for other people's information than my own. I upped my RAM from 2gb to 8gb and when booting afterwards, the system would repeatedly hang before the BIOS screen.
I removed each module one at a time, finally getting down to zero and putting my old RAM back in. The problem persisted. Apparently when the amount of system RAM changes, it scans everything for quite a while or something. I really don't know why.
It took nearly 5 minutes to boot the system. After that, I rebooted and it was fast as can be. Anyway, it was kind of nerve wracking and I was upset by the whole thing, so I'm hoping maybe someone will see this and be able to avoid the same stress I went through

I've decided to add more RAM to my laptop. I have a Vostro 1500 and it's already 2GB but i want a 4GB. My question is that if I have a 1 2gb in the slot or 2 1gb RAM in the slots. I don't want to open up and laptop and possibly screw something up. Also what type of ram do i need? DDR2? PC-XXXX?

I like my Dell D620 so much that I just got another one. I've heard that I should not add an additional 1G module to the existing 1G in this laptop, but rather that it is best to replace the existing 1G with either two matched 1G modules or one 2G module. Is that correct? Seems a shame to toss the 1G that's already in there . . .
Could I add a 2G module to the 1G that's already in there? I'm assuming that the bay will accept two RAM modules.
The OS is XP-Pro, SP3, if that matters.

I bought yesterday the 640GB WD HDD and I tried to install it but Windows will not load. It will get stuk in the "loading screen" and will not advance to ask my password.
To complicate things, Windows actually loaded once, the driver setup programm was launched, the HDD was not visible and when I tried to restart it got stuck again.
Once I removed the drive everything loaded as usually.

I've searched the forum and found a service diagram on installing the bluetooth card into the M1530 notebook. My question is, I never choose to have it put in by dell, so I know I need to purchase the card and I'm going to guess that the cable will need to be purchased as well.

Sure it sounds ridiculous, but from the pics of the reader online, it looks as if its practically dropped in in place of the right speaker panel.
What complications are there in doing something like this?

I have a Dell Latitude E4300 laptop that came without an integrated camera.
I am thinking of adding a camera to this laptop by ordering:
a) A new LCD Front Bezel and rear LCD cover
b) a Dell camera
I would love your advice on the following questions:
1) Is this possible?
2) Do all E4300s have a slot for adding a webcam on the mother board?
3) Will I need to update the BIOS or anything else to enable it?

I have a Acer inspire 5100 series laptop. Today I went out and bought a dual thingy of ram for it. I flipped the computer over and opened what I thought was the door that led to the ram, but just had a big silver immovable protector thing over it. I felt this was it, since the other things I can unscrew on the bottom will take off almost the entire bottom of the computer.
Where do I install the ram?

I originally purchased my E1705 with a 60GB 7200RPM drive. I believe at the time it was mainly to save a few bucks and that the largest 7200RPM available may have been around 120GB and added $200 to the price of the machine.
I am constantly finding myself uninstalling applications and looking for things to delete to save space on this tiny little drive, it has gotten to the point that it is a hassle. I recently moved my music library to an external USB drive to free up about 20GB only to fill it again right away by installing Visual Studio 2008 and the MSDN Library.
I need more drive space!
I know there are a ton of options out there for drives which I can easily swap right into this machine but I am having a tough time trying to decide if I am willing to sacrifice the added speed of a 7200RPM drive for the additional space offered by the largest of the 2.5" drives.
I use this machine for everything, it is my primary computer so having the fastest available options is desirable. I frequently render digital video for the creation of DVDs and believe it or not I perform this function currently on external USB drives because of the space issues. Having th space to move this to the primary drive with the full speed interface will be a big plus.

I recently picked up a used d630. It currently has two 512 dimms in it. Do I need 2gb or 4gb? I know Windows XP won't use all 4gb.
If I do upgrade to just 2gb. Should I use 2x1gb or just get 1x2b and leave the other 512 dimm in there for now??

When reviewing this machine I found that it had a second HDD drive bay which I thought would be helpful if I ever needed extra space, that time has come. I made the mistake of buying an identical toshiba drive to put in the second bay as when I opend the second drive bay, it was totally empty, no chasis, no connector, or any sign of where I could attach a connector to the motherboard. Why promote a second drive bay if it can't be used; or can it?
