Dell :: Beware Replacing Low/Cheap Quality Replacement Parts
Jul 9, 2009
Few days before i started a thread regarding the display issue .. and today i was got a replacement for my keyboard...
the old one was very strong and sturdy ... the new one was fragile, and flexible.. i called the CC then and reported that teh keyboard is very fragile...
he told me that currently all replacement keyboards are like that...
it seems that Indian customers are the ones who have been ill treated with cheap parts...

However measurements conducted using a professional grade meter severe issues:Yes the colors do pop but green is widly oversaturatedMost colors have incorrect hueYes maximum luminance is very high but black levels are very poor, so the contrast remains below 580:1Color temperature is too high (greyscale suffers from a greenish tint)
Those issues cannot be solved:Calibrating the greyscale to a different color temperature (65K standard) reduces the contrast significantly. Adding some red will fix color temperature but also increase black luminance and hence reduce the contrast. The color saturation and color hue controls do not alter the green color in any significant way.
While the display may be ok for gamers who like nuclearly inaccurate colors, the display is very poor for what it is supposed to do: displaying Bluray films and other video content (after all this is a 16/9 HD media laptop)The poor black levels mean the picture looks flat and 2 dimensionalThe color inaccuracies lead to radiating grass and foliage as well as incorrect skin tones.
I am including the details of my measurements below, as well as examples of ow the color settings of the ATI Catalyst Control panel affect the readings.
Contrast
Black Level: 0,48cd/m²
White Point (maximal luminance): 270cd/m²
Contrast: 560:1
Unfortunately, this is merely average, as most competing non LED panels have contrasts of 600:1 or higher. Also any good screen should have black levels below 0,3cd/m² .....

I got the dreaded GFX card fail on my 1710 a couple of months ago (about a month after warrranty expiration).
Is it possible to get some kind of dirt cheap GFX card replacement to fit to get the notebook booting up again properly (not in safe mode hell)?

I talked to the guy who repaired my laptop about what brands he thought lasted the longest and needed the least repairs (he's been fixing computers all his life pretty much). And he said hp/compaq were the best.

I'm looking for an extra Hard Drive bezel/Caddy (the flimsy plastic piece you screw onto your hard drive) for my Vostro 1500. The piece has to cost pennies to make, but I'm having a hard time finding one.
I was appalled to find it here at this price ($45):
http://www.laptopking.com/kingpartde...ategory=caddys
Anyone know of a good place to find this part?
They have the entire caddy for sale on ebay, but I'm just looking for the plastic piece:

yesterday i placed a complaint on my dispaly since there were few black spots and two white spots on my disaplay . the CC told e that they will replace it . Mine is WXGA+ display.Today a technician came along with the display. he replaced it and when he restarted the system . i noticed that the black contrast ratio were poor.. i thought it was some glare. windows booted and i viewed few photos and video just to check the clarity... they all were glaring..or say the contrast ratio was not as like my prev one.i asked the technician to take a loook.. he too found it different.. so he called his superior .. they said they will replace it again.the funny thing is the one which came new also had pixels and it had the same WXGA+ printed ! so wht shall i do when the new display which is about tot come on monday to have the same contrast ratio.. or poor clarity ?luckily i asked the technician to put back my old display.

Bought a Dell XPS 16 i7 with te RGBLED a while back BEFORE reading te numerous postings on this setup.
My first issue was the OVER saturation of reds with the RGBLED monitor.
It WILL look fairly decent when watching a movie but if you're thinking about getting it for photography, you WILL NOT be able to CORRECTLY adjust the saturation levels...and also, the brightness is WAY too bright even at its lowest setting. Be cautious about 'reviewers' who say the extra $$$ is TOTALLY worth it to get this monitor...it might be ok for gaming and multimedia (alto even during those applications, I found it rather distracting) but I NOT recommend this for professional uses...don't be fooled by 112% gamut. If you feel the need to purchase this laptop, stick with the 15.6 LED...but then that begs the question: Why buy a 16 inch laptop that as a 15.6 monitor??
Secondly, Ive begun find reports that the 90w power adapter is inadequate to power the laptop. Forum users have posted benchmarks showing decreased performance using the 90w adapter compared to the battery (lol). I think this may explain why my monitor was flickering every so often while plugged in. Very annoying. Ive read of people calling and calling and calling and calling Dell CS and finally calling getting them to ship out for free the 130w power adapter which seems to fix that problem. (pretty sure you can search here and find info on this)
Thirdly, Ive been researching DDR2 compared to DDR3 and, please, correct me if I'm wrong, but using 2 dimms of DDR3 is rather ineffectual since the i7 core is built to utilize a triple channel setup. So it seems the XPS 16 doesn't really get to sow off ALL its performance.
And lastly, the idea of a subwoofer in a laptop SEEMS like a cool idea, but considering the build quality of the XPS 16, all it really did on mine was VIBRATE the plastic seams...and I couldn't really turn off or lower the bass enough even as a workaround.
I guess since Im writing this, I might as well share about the 9 cell battery...again, seems great to get a larger capacity battery, but I found it annoying to have this BULGE coming out of my laptop bag. And considering I wasnt getting much more than an hours worth of battery with the RGBLED and an i7 cpu, I always had my underpowered 90w adapter with me. Im pretty sure they include the 9 cell b/c it adds some room underneath the laptop for extra ventilation. Im wondering if they've had some warranty returns due to overheating.

Well returned my E6400 today went quite smoothly. The system was great with the exception of sending it with the wrong display a CCFL not the LED WXGA as in the outlet Details and Order Confirmation.
I been looking in the Outlet several times daily since Tuesday for a suitable placement, Tonight I scored one similar specs as the one I sent back , now I’m thinking ” see persistence and patience pays off”.
Check the specs one more time everything looks good, click checkout and confirm. Soon I browse my email Order confirmed WXGA LED click on the hyperlinked Order Number for a detailed view of components installed ……Lo and behold CCFL !!!!!!!
I immediately contacted Dell and explained the problem and cancelled my order, the agent told me to stay on the phone as she would transfer me to a sales rep who then will make sure I’ll get a LED display on a comparable spec’ed machine. 30 minutes later the sale agent answered and questioned what system listed in the Outlet would I be interested in.
I explained I was told she would work that out for me and find something similar to my past orders but with an actual LED display, she then said all she had was what was listed and further stated that one cannot go by order confirmation of what the system specs were

I was going to be assembling an m1710 this weekend....
I called Dell Spare Parts a few days ago, and placed an order for the following;
HG345 Refurb bottom plastics, m1710
FF084 Refurb palmrest assy, m1710
J8841 Refurb speakers, LED, m1710
CF426 Refurb hinge cover, m1710
I've been watching the order on Dell's site all week, as it was scheduled to ship (on or before today) (2/21/08), and I opted for Next Day shipping.
When I placed the order, the woman I spoke with asked for my Service Tag number. I, um... don't HAVE one... I didn't say this, I simply said I don't have that information at the moment. She asked how I got the part numbers, and I told her from their own Spare Parts page.
Well....the order got cancelled today. Saw it online while at work, just before I left for the day. Another order number with the identical items was created, with a scheduled ship date of 3/3/08. WHAT?
The woman just called....she states they cannot process my order without a service tag number. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!
I told her I don't have a tag number....she asked if I was building one. "Yes." To which I hear...
"Oh....well, I don't think our supplier will allow that without a service tag number, because we reserve those parts for people who bought m1710's."
I said "That's amazing...because I know a number of people who have done the same thing I'm trying to do, and had no problems getting these parts."
"Well, that's because they have m1710's"
*mad enought to scream at this point* "Um, no...where do you think I got the idea from?? I'm certainly not the first person to have this idea."
how I can get them to sell me some refurbished plastics? What's the secret password?

Dell M1730: 320gb 7200rpm to 128gb SSD is $100, and to RAID 256gb ssd (128x128) is $300
HP HDX 18t 320gb 7200rpm to 160 gb SSD + 500gb 5400rpm (who wants that?) is $600.
Sony AW: 320gb 7200rpm to 64gb SSD + 500gb 4200rpm (!) is $420.
Are the SSD's that the Dells use worse quality or something? I really want an SSD with my next laptop, and I'm leaning towards HP or Sony because I think I want an 18.4 inch model, but it really, really surprises me that the Dell SSDs are so much cheaper. Anyone have an explanation, or am I missing something obvious?

Aloha im planning on buying a S16 XPS in about 9months - 1year (or like a few weeks before dell would be discontinuing it from their website).
Since ive got an inspiron 6400 at the moment, and while it does get hot and the back panel cant be opened to clean the dust off fan,
and the graphics card is CRAP and cant play any games like call of duty 4....,
its still a nice laptop and works fine in all other ways and for everything else.

I tend to take my laptop around a lot and I get kind of annoyed at having to constantly hook up all the various USB cables and the monitor it interfaces with.
Docking stations seem ideal for convenience, but they seem awfully expensive.
Are there any affordable docks or USB hubs out there? Like less than 30-40 dollars?

The macbook pro screen is great, and a key insight was to realize that the latitude E6500 screens are the exact same ones (as the last generation before the unibody macbook pros). I got the AUO screen, and it's great. It is the exact same screen as a macbook pro. I had one, so I know until it broke. A great screen totally changes the entire perception of a notebook in my opinion, especially when using it for multimedia.
I have used a thinkpad before and I loved the keyboard. Newer generation ones that I have seen don't feel as cushy and soft. The E6500 keyboard is every bit as good as the current thinkpad keyboards if you like a softer, spongier feel with good key travel. So if you care about the keyboard alot, the new latitudes are I think tied for the #1 spot with anything else that you can throw out there.
Oh, and the price simply can't be beat.
The backlit keyboard is also a very underrated feature. I would absolutely get this if anyone is hesitating.
The one knock on this laptop is the fan noise. It's not bad, but it's not the most silent one out of the macbook pros and the thinkpads. However, I don't believe that there is inferior cooling or inferior design that makes the E6500 run louder. I think that it's probably just a BIOS setting that Dell has put in there to make sure that the system stays cool at the expense of having more noise. In other words, if Dell didn't mind hot system temps like the macbook pros, then I suppose it could run nearly as quietly. Either way, I do wish the notebook was a bit quieter. I do have the nvidia gpu and am curious if getting the intel gpu would cut down on the noise. I'd also gain some battery life and to be honest, I never use any 3d stuff but just like to have the real gpu for resale purposes and to futureproof the laptop.
But for price/performance, this is the laptop to beat because now I can watch videos, even hulu ones, without intrinsically wishing for more brightness and contrast in the dark scenes. I feel like I've got a 15" hdtv.

I am going to upgrate my Acer 5672.
On tigerdirect I found 2 nice Hds
Seagate Momentus 7200.3 ST9250421AS 250GB Mobile Hard Drive - 2.5", 7200RPM, 16MB, SATA-300 for $74
and
Hitachi / TravelStar 7K200 / 200GB / 7200 / 16MB / 2.5" Mobile / SATA-150 / Hard Drive for $90
It seems to me first one is much better, more size , more speed, but I don't understand why it is cheaper.
One guy told me Segate's disks overheat laptops. Is it true ?....
So... why is it cheaper? I everything ok with this brand ?
I am also planning to add more memory, 4GB instead 1GB.
Should I be concern about overheat ?

I'm going to be ordering the Sony SR in a couple of days probably. Today I went to Best Buy to look at it. Everything about it I liked except for the casing. It's so flimsy and seems like it's made out of cheap plastic. I recognize that this helps to keep it light, but still, just touching it made me feel like my palms will break the computer after a while, lol. Seriously, why do they make it like that? The thing bends so easily, including the screen. Making it of something a more strong would not add considerable weight!
