Dell :: DVD/CD RW Drive Will Not Read Or Write CDs
May 9, 2009
Dell XPS M1710. Phillips SDVD8820 DVD/CD RW Drive. Shows up in hardware manager, but all of a sudden, after writing a few discs in the morning, the drive just stopped being able to either read or write a CD.
I've tried reading both commercial audio CDs as well as audio CDs I've written on the system, and it just behaves as if there is no CD in the drive. Using iTunes, WMP, Media Monkey, and Nero 9...
When I stick a DVD in the drive and let Nero 9 check the drive out, it recognizes what type of drive it is, etc. But if I ask any of those apps to read or play a CD, they all say no CD is in the drive..

This might sound a bit trivial but could somebody clarify Dell's Bluray option to me pls:
Fixed Internal Blu-ray Disc (DVD+/-RW + BD-ROM) Slot Drive including SW
Obviously it reads and writes dvds both + and -; read bluray discs only but not write...

I have a brand new Ideapad G710 with 1TB Serial ATA 2, 5400rpm with advertised speed of 3 Gb/s (= 384MB/s). I am running Windows 7 ultimate x64 with SP1.
When I test hard drive read/write speed (I used CrystalDiskMark) I get results of about 100MB/s, which is 3-4 times slower than it should be. I am not running any resource heavy applications (Resource monitor reports Disk I/O to be 0 most of the time in idle state). I have 3 partitions, each with 16-32GB paging file size and all are >90% empty. All partitions have been defragmented before testing.
Is this normal? Are there any lenovo drivers or utilities than I might be missing or that can slow/speed this?

I decided to get a brand new macbook pro 13" and I'm lovin it so far.
Then one day I plug in my 1tb hdd and come to find out Macs can't write to NTFS hard drives.
What....the....heck, so now I have to wait 10hrs again to reformat my 1TB to FAT32, oh wait fat32 is limited to 2GB files. Great.
Is there a reason why MACs can't right to NTFS drives?

this is how you get native support for Read/write for snow leopard running 64-bit kernal.
After a ton of frustration and jumping through hoops, I thought I'd save a few people out there some headaches.
NTFS-3G + Macfuse does not work in snow leopard 64-bit kernal If anyone got it to work I'd like to know how as I have tried everything an it doesn't work.
So here is an even better alternative.
Remember when Snow leopard was supposed to support NTFS natively out of the box? Well it does...kind of. I'm not sure what happened but Apple was working on it, but in the end decided not to activate it. Kinda almost like the ipod touch with the camera.
Before you can do anything, you must completely uninstall NTFS-3G and Macfuse. Heres on how to uninstall.
Q 2.3. How can I uninstall MacFUSE?
A: Launch the Mac OS X System Preferences application and go to the MacFUSE preference pane. Click on the "Remove MacFUSE" button. This will uninstall all MacFUSE components except the preference pane itself.
You can keep the MacFUSE preference pane around should you decide to install MacFUSE again in the future. If you do wish to remove it, you do it just like how you would remove any other non-Apple preference pane: In System Preferences, control-click (right-click) on the MacFUSE icon and you will see "Remove ..." as an action............

I've had my L520 for over a year now and have not previously needed to burn stuff to disk, so I do not know if my problem is new or old.
Essentially the drive recognises disks when they are inserted and accurately displays files already on the disk, but it gives available space as nil regardless of disk or existing file size. Additionally if a blank disk is inserted it will say that the disk cannot be read and to try formatting. These are standard preformatted disks I'm using.

I've tested a couple CDR discs that work on my friend's computer but not mine. Anybody ever experience this before .....

I have a Dell 17inch E1705/9400 notebook and Vista home. I recently purchased a [url]Samsung DVD burner. I replaced the stock one, and once I turned the computer on the OS does not detect the new drive at all . The drive will not open when the button is pressed, but the power (reading?) light is on ALL the time. I do not hear the drive making any noise, only at startup.

I got this Laptop with Ubuntu to dodge being locked into only having Vista and hit my head during many attempts to install Vista Home Premium SP1 64-Bit.
First problem is I keep getting a "can't use this volume" or "can't find volume suitable for Vista" during partitioning.
Got the Intel driver on a flash drive for it but not sure if I need the flash cache driver or not. Vista 32-Bit hung during setup so..

On my W510, the CD drive will not read any media. It sounds like it's trying to spin up but then comes to a grinding halt and repeats this a few times before giving up. Though in My Computer it does show up as an Audio CD so it might be able to read a little bit.
Here's a recording of the sound [URL] ....
Is the drive able to be fixed?

There's a "disk read error occured" when I startup and it won't boot into windows at all. I did a hard disk test in BIOS and the Short DST failed and the failure id is GTU23F-5QF788-XD6V5F-60UR0 for Hard Disk 1. I know there's an 80 SSD and 750 HD but which one failed?
If the ssd failed can I use the 750gb HD or does it need both?
If I do need to replace the SSD can I replace it with a regular HD (on a budget) and what size drive do I need? 2.5?

My T500 was slammed very hard one day, once I reboot, it worked for half hour and gave up. I tested it via BIOS, it gave me error code 0000 read verification failed.
I presumed the HD is dead, inserted a healthy one inside and works fine for a couple of hours and gave up again, tested through BIOS gave me the same error code.

Like most I've replaced the motherboard once for the bad video chip. I've used Nero and Roxio to write files from my desktop to the DVD disk.
The error after the hour long write process is "Unable to open ####.zip" for all of the files.
Yet placing the disk after burning it "shows" all the files, but you cannot open them.
I've tried this four times with two different type DVD disks

I've been a lurker for a while now and I just received my new VGN-FW390 today. I tried to create the recovery discs and the drive will simply not recognize any DVD+Rs. I've tried the built in Windows DVD Maker and Click to Disc.
I just got the computer today and I'm trying to get a clean version of Vista installed so I can get rid of these apps and install my own but I can't even get the recovery discs created.
The drive I have is the Pioneer BD-RW BDR-TD01 .....

Just bought my 5920G laptop from Dixons - looks great BUT - I cannot write to any DVD media. I can write to CD and I can read DVDs no problem.
Windows media player suggests I get compatible DVD media for the drive speed - I have used 3 types - all up to 16x.
What speed should they be and what media is recommended?
I want to create some backup image DVDs as the PC comes with nothing!

I have an HP DV2700 laptop (core 2 duo T5450 @1.66Ghz, 2GB of ram with vista home premium 32-bit).
I have a Western digital scorpio 250GB HD at 5400 rpm (WDC WD2500BEVS) and I am having some trouble enabling the write catching (and in extension, advanced performance mode.) I have tried accessing device manager and selecting 'enable write caching on the disk' however the policy does not persist once i apply the change. Despite my disappointment, this was to be expected since the comment 'this device does not allow its write cache setting to be modified' can be seen underneath the option. Being a tweaker of sorts with regards to vista, I was certain there is a way to allow such modifications to take place.
As an aside, I wanted to know whether enabling these policies would decrease spin up time? More specifically, decrease the amount of heat emitted from the hard drive. Of those who own DV laptops, this is an understandable request, seeing as the base of the laptop, under stress, becomes uncomfortably hot.

I was reformatting my iPod the other day and I left the house to go run some errands and when I got back I was greeted with the BSOD. So I just restarted my computer like always when suddenly I was greeted with this:
PBR 2... done
A disk read error has occurred
Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart
So I pressed Ctrl + Alt + Del and got the same message. About 5 times later I was able to run some sort of diagnostics and it was showing something with my HDD. So I tore my computer apart and put everything back in just to see if that would work and I'm still getting the same.
Am I just screwed out of my 20GB of music and all those programs that I had on my computer or is there some sort of fix to be able to recover the data? And will I just have to cave and get a new HDD?

I have a Studio XPS 1640 with Blu-ray drive. As I don't have any Blu-ray movie disc with me at the moment, I tried putting several PS3 BD game discs into my 1640's blu-ray drive, but none of them can be read by the drive (when I try to explore the drive with Explorer/My Computer).
So I'm wondering whether:
a. My blu-ray drive is broken; or
b. This is normal. Blu-ray cannot be read within Windows Explorer like DVD.
c. Has something to do with region locking?
My blu-ray drive can read CD or DVD just fine.

It was expected to ship on thr 10th and I actually received it today. Dell is the best. But anyways, here are just a few questions to you current owners:
1.) How can I adjust my RGB settings to perfection and what settings would you recommend (Please don't post a thread of a 10 pages that I will have to read through).
2.) I purchased the 9 cell. Do I want to fully charge it, then let it die all the way down so the sensor is correct or what would you recommend?...........................

I have a new Dell M4400 Precision running Windows Vista 64bit. Th only function that works with the fingerprint reader is pre boot and windows log on.
I am not able to log onto web pages or applications. The fingerprint reader (in my case the FIPS unit but both are effected) is not attached to the system and will not detect as a biometric device. The fingerprint reader is connected to a unit called a Broadcom USH (Unified Security Hub). Since the unit is not detected as a biometric device you cannot use it with any fingerprint software such as PSQL (Upek's Protector Suite QL) or the built in software with Windows 7. The only software that it works with is ETS (Wave's Embassy trust Suit) which officially from Wave does not support and will not support 64bits OS. The ETS software however does not work even when a 32bit OS is used, Well at least not work in a practical manner.
I AM IN CONTACT WITH DELL LEVEL 2 SUPPORT AND ENGINEERING. BUT NEED HELP FROM OTHER DELL OWNERS TO FORCE DELLS HAND TO RESOLVE THIS POOR DESIGN FLOOR WHICH ONLY EFFECTS THE NEW DELL LAPTOPS.
FACTS KNOWN SO FAR
1. The Fingerprint readers used are standard USB readers
2. The port on the USH is a standard USB port.
3. The fingerprints are stored in the fingerprint unit.
4. The fingerprint reader will still work with the TPM disabled
5. The FIPS and HSPD security is part of the UPEK reader and has no bearing on the broadcom USH.
6. It is the USH that is blocking the fingerprint from Windows.
7. Up until approx 10 days ago Dell did not see this as an issue. But now see it as a high priority to resolve and are talking about developing a 64bit ETS.
8. Being able to use PQSL with the FIPS reader would resolve issues. Allowing webpage logon and application logon as all previous Dell units did.
9. The FIPS reader is supported by PSQL 2009 confirmed by UPEK.
10. Not confirmed only commented by a UPEK Tech that they are trying to resolve the broadcom compatibility issue that effects Dell.
11. The Broadcom USH controls the Smartcard and Contactless smartcard readers. The fingerprint reader is only connected to a USB port on this device which is restricted from the system. Like a locked port on a USB hub.
12. Which with out Dell owners speaking up as a whole Dell engineering will not listen to the Dell Pro support.
HOW WE CAN FIX IT
After speaking with UPEK and Dell pro support is is confirmed that this solution will resolve the issue of the fingerprint reader not being a biometric device and all of the problem associated with this simple fact.
SOLUTION
If Dell engineering was to update the firmware on the Broadcom USH allowing the USB port that the fingerprint reader is attached to be seen by the system then all would be resolved and windows would see the fingerprint reader as a biometric device instead of Broadcom USH w/ fingerprint touch sensor. This would work the same way a USB port on a hub sees a device. For example a memory stick on a USB hub intergrated into a keyboard is not seen as a "Keyboard w/memory stick".
CONCLUSION
Dell pro support has already requested the update from Engineering and was told they are looking into a 64bit ETS. This does not add inbuilt support for windows 7. Unless Dell owners speak up together and in numbers ENGINEERING WILL NOT LISTEN. So please reply to this post if you are not able to use your new fingerprint unit in the practical way that a HP, Acer, Toshiba or owner of another brand laptop can.
