Lenovo ThinkPad W Series :: CD Drive Will Not Read Any Media On W510
Sep 14, 2013
On my W510, the CD drive will not read any media. It sounds like it's trying to spin up but then comes to a grinding halt and repeats this a few times before giving up. Though in My Computer it does show up as an Audio CD so it might be able to read a little bit.
Here's a recording of the sound [URL] ....
Is the drive able to be fixed?

I recently set an HDD password on my W510. Now I would like to disable it again.
Unfortunatly the option to set the password is now inactive in the BIOS: It says "Hard Disk1 Password [User]", but I cannot select the option in order to change it. This appears to be a bug. I once had a T61, where changing the password was no problem.
I would really like to get rid of the password again.

I have a W510 with Q720 CPU that absolutely will not clock above 1.60GHz. I am using the 135W power supply that came with the laptop and have my battery settings set to maximum performance. I've also installed the latest power management driver (1.67.09.03) and have checked in the BIOS to make sure that the scheme for AC power is set to Maximum Performance.
Funnily enough, i have another W510 that i use for other purposes and have replicated it's state to match my laptop and it's Q720 CPU has no problems turbo boosting above it's 1.60GHz ceiling. Even sitting at the desktop at idle, it hovers between 1.7-1.9GHz and shoots above 2GHz when opening applications and doing other things as it should. Mine on the other hand absolutely will not clock above 1.6 and the lack of performance im getting because of this is becoming frustrating.

I was trying to run Factory Recovery utility on my W510, and after getting a message that no more than one copy of recovery set can be created (which is true - i already created one set a while ago), one of my local disks "disappeared". I still can see my System disk (C, but can't see or open my local disk (D.

I had a problem booting and tested my hard disk with the BIOS tool and it reported an error (Error code 0000: Read verification failed), so I guess it is time to find a new hard disk. I also scanned with SeaTools and long generic test also failed.
I was looking at the Seagate SSHD 1TB SATA-600 (model number: ST1000LM014), but I am not entirely sure if this is supported by my system...
I am a bit unsure if my system can handle the disk of this size, but so far I haven't been able to locate the info of limitations for my system....
I read in another post here on the forum that all SATA drives are backwards compatible, so I presume that even if my system is not SATA-600 (as far as I could figure my old hard disk is SATA-300 model number: ST9160827AS).

I have a brand new Ideapad G710 with 1TB Serial ATA 2, 5400rpm with advertised speed of 3 Gb/s (= 384MB/s). I am running Windows 7 ultimate x64 with SP1.
When I test hard drive read/write speed (I used CrystalDiskMark) I get results of about 100MB/s, which is 3-4 times slower than it should be. I am not running any resource heavy applications (Resource monitor reports Disk I/O to be 0 most of the time in idle state). I have 3 partitions, each with 16-32GB paging file size and all are >90% empty. All partitions have been defragmented before testing.
Is this normal? Are there any lenovo drivers or utilities than I might be missing or that can slow/speed this?

I recently acquired a new Thinkpad W530 with Windows 7 Pro.
I want to immediately replace the 500gb main drive with a larger one. I plan to do this by imaging the system partition of the current drive to an external USB hdd, and then then writing the image to the larger one after it's installed in the W530.
My question: Can I then just store the original drive away as is, to use for recovery (should the need arise), in lieu of creating recovery media now?
It seems pretty clear the answer should be "yes," but since I've always used XP up until now I'm wondering if there are any kinds of Win 7-specific watchouts (maybe licensing-rleated?) that would keep things from being as simple as popping the original drive back in the main hdd slot to get things back to exactly where they are today?

I have made a Recovery disk on a USB Flash Drive using the Lenovo “create a recovery disk” in the Lenovo Solution Centre software.
The USB Drive seems to have been created successfully. It shows in Windows Disk Management as cbd_drive (D 14.48GB NTFS Healthy (Active, Primary Partition).
When I interrupt the boot with F12, The USB Drive comes up as an option (USB HDD: Sandisk Ultra), but when this option is selected, the screen flashes briefly, then returns back to the boot options again, so the USB drive will not boot properly – the boot fails and reverts back to the boot options screen.
The root directory of the USB contains the following -
BOOT (Folder)
FactoryRecovery (Folder)
usb.tag
winRE.wim
I have read other threads on here, and think I have covered the issues raised there. This is the first time I have used a USB flash drive as a recovery disk, so I may be missing something very basic.
Is something wrong with the USB drive

I recently ordered a new Carbon X1 20A7 for a VP here and noticed that it, as well as all the other sets we receive for the T430's, W530, etc all contain 4 things - 3 discs and a small pamphlet. The Pamphlet explains that the discs should be labeled 1 2 3 and all (Ive checked an order of 100 T430s and the first 17 boxes are all wrong) contain 2 x #1 and a #2 - I have looked in the old lab and found older shipments that all contain similar 1 1 2 instead of 1 2 3 .

Today I received my new worklaptop, a W540 with Windows 8 installed.
The first think I wanted to do was to create recovery media (I'm going to re-install on a SSD). However, trying to run the Windows 8 "Create recovery media" tool, as sugested by Lenovo, results in the following:
The option "Copy the recovery partition ..." is grayed out, and I can not select it. Pressing Next results in the following:

Followed all the instructions to the letter, but the Defender Offline media won't boot on this new W540, either on USB flash drive, or on the CD drive.

I just got a new Lenovo W540. I installed a new Samsung EVO SSD inside to replace the stock mechanical hard drive. I'm now trying to boot from a flash drive to clean install Windows. I've done this so many times before on other laptops and desktops without a problem. For some reason now it will not boot from the flash drive. It shows it as available in the BIOS but it looks like it reads it for just a second and then goes right back to the screen that allows me to choose which drive I want to put to.The same flash drive works fine in other computers to boot to.I did check to make sure the USB drive was not excluded in the BIOS and it is not.

I've recently got an ultrabay adapter and wanted to know if I could run two separate OSs, one from each hard disc.
Effectively, I would like to have one version of windows on the internal HDD for general day to day stuff and one as a programming environment and be able to select which to boot from at start up.
I know I could just use a VM, but some of this stuff (Siemens PCS7) can put quite a strain on the system and I'd rather not have that overhead.

I can't get past BIOS when my W530 is connected to an external hard drive, in my case a WD My Book Essential 3TB (USB 3.0).
Here are some previous threads I've found:
-W520 hangs on boot when a WD SES USB drive is connected
-W520 won't boot with SES device connected to USB
-W530 stuck or won't boot when WD external drive plugged in.
I would be satisfied if I could disable USB Legacy Support in BIOS and move on, but I can't find that option anywhere on my W530.
Here's what I've tried so far:
-Updated BIOS to the latest version (1.11) and updated WD My Book firmware.
-Changed the port (tried both USB 2.0 and 3.0, powered and unpowered) that the drive is connected to.
-Removed everything except my MSATA drive in boot priority. I can't enter BIOS settings when the WD drive is connected so I can't actually exclude it from the boot priority, but I've tried to enable Boot Order Lock.
-Disabled USB options in BIOS (USB UEFI BIOS Support, Always on USB, etc.).Switched between Quick and Diagnostic boot. With Quick it's stuck at the Thinkpad splash screen, with Diagnostic I just get a black screen.
-Tried with both GPT and MBR partitions styles for the external drive.
-Changed between UEFI and Legacy.Tried it with my friend's Thinkpad T520, wouldn't boot either with the drive connected...
Other information:
My Thinkpad is docked to a Thinkpad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 with USB 3.0 (170W). I haven't bothered to try it undocked, but judging from the other posts it's not likely to fix the issue.
Surprisingly I don't have this issue with my older WD My Book Essential Edition 2.0 1TB (USB 2.0) external hard drive. I don't think it would work to simply remove the drive from boot priority. I've removed my other external hard drive but I can still hear it spinning up during boot (when the Thinkpad splash screen shows up), which suggest that it's still being identified during boot. Is there really no workaround other than "get a different enclosure" or "unplug it when powering on"? Are there any >3TB external hard drives, preferably USB 3.0, that are known to work?

I just ordered myself an S430 with a 128gb SSD HDD included. I didn't see an option to replace the optical drive with a secondary HDD (e.g. a 500gb) so have the optical drive in as standard. Now, I would have rather changed this out for a secondary HDD or for a Blu-Ray drive, thinking I could do this myself once bought...Looking at other posts it looks like you can swap out the optical drive for a Blu-Ray drive, although I would preferably get a secondary drive over the Blu-Ray, but I'm hesitant over a few things:
Is this possible to do myself (swapping out for either secondary HDD or blu-ray drive) without voiding the warranty? (I got it with 2 year warranty). Is it actually possible to do at all? (swapping out for a secondary HDD)....

The problems still exist after I do a fresh restore with Lenovo DVDs. Also ran the Lenovo Update & Driver utility.
1. My W530 wont boot or start if I have a External drives plugged in. It stucked at "ThinkPad" screen. I have to unplug the external drive and press/old power button to shut it down. Same thing happened when the laptop is docked.
=> Contacted the technical support today. They told me I have to unplug and plug it back in everytime. I told him that there is a reason I got the dock station so I don't have to unplug and plug my external drive every time.
2. I have no problems booting if thumbs drive plugged in. But it keep "Auto run" everytime I turn on the machine.
I do not have this problem with my W500 and W510.
W530, Intel Core i7-3820, 32G DDR3 RAM, 180G Intel SSD, Windows 7 x64, NVIDIA Quadro K2000M.

I was able to install a new: PNY Optima SSD7SC240GOPT-RB 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) in my ThinkPad X220 model 4287. I installed the latest BIOS before the upgrade and did a clean install of Windows 8.1 Pro. The installed went smooth with no issues. I proceeded in installing all Drivers and utilities. Then I noticed that when I restart Windows, the BIOS does not recognize the drive and proceeds to try to boot from the Network, Intel Boot Agent. It does not seem to recognize the SSD drive.
The only way I can get it to boot from windows again is to TURN OFF using the power button and then turning it back ON. I tried the Lenovo SSD firmware update utility to see if my drive needed an update but it did not find any update for my drive. I also tried to the PNY support site and downloaded the firmware update to see if it found any updates for my drive and none where available. I hope LENOVO can release an update to their SSD firmware update tool to fix my problem. I am also not sure if any of the utilities that I installed may be the root of the problem. So right now the only way I can get Windows to load is to turn off and turn back on the laptop. Windows restarts will not work.

My T500 was slammed very hard one day, once I reboot, it worked for half hour and gave up. I tested it via BIOS, it gave me error code 0000 read verification failed.
I presumed the HD is dead, inserted a healthy one inside and works fine for a couple of hours and gave up again, tested through BIOS gave me the same error code.

On my W510, I would like to set the volume on the internal speakers to "mute" while setting a different volume on the headset jack, in windows 7
This is so the laptop will not play any sound when the headset is unplugged, but work normally when headset is plugged in.
Normally I can find 2 different audio devices in windows, and control them separately.
Does the thinkpad support this? Do i need special drivers?

The tests in which my laptop G505 59379534 is failing are given as Targeted read and smart short self test. Also against local connection test warning is shown. My OS is windows 8.1. Only couple of days back I have installed HP2545 printer on my PC. I do not know wheher this has something to do with present status of laptop. Also I am using Kaspersky internet security 2014. I am worried whether this alert message points to any serious impending problem for my laptop. Laptop is almost 9 months old. It is still under warranty.

I have an R52 Thinkpad running XP that was "virgin" (not connected to the web) until I did some updates to get a new optical mouse installed. Below are the updates:

Also a mouse driver from Microsoft for the Wireless Optical Mouse 3000: IP32Eng6.30.191.0.exe
The optical mouse still doesn't work, but I have a new problem: I can't remove the CD from my CD/DVD drive. I push the button - no light - no open - no nothing.
