View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently set an HDD password on my W510. Now I would like to disable it again.
Unfortunatly the option to set the password is now inactive in the BIOS: It says "Hard Disk1 Password [User]", but I cannot select the option in order to change it. This appears to be a bug. I once had a T61, where changing the password was no problem.
I would really like to get rid of the password again.
I have a W510 with Q720 CPU that absolutely will not clock above 1.60GHz. I am using the 135W power supply that came with the laptop and have my battery settings set to maximum performance. I've also installed the latest power management driver (1.67.09.03) and have checked in the BIOS to make sure that the scheme for AC power is set to Maximum Performance.
Funnily enough, i have another W510 that i use for other purposes and have replicated it's state to match my laptop and it's Q720 CPU has no problems turbo boosting above it's 1.60GHz ceiling. Even sitting at the desktop at idle, it hovers between 1.7-1.9GHz and shoots above 2GHz when opening applications and doing other things as it should. Mine on the other hand absolutely will not clock above 1.6 and the lack of performance im getting because of this is becoming frustrating.
On my W510, the CD drive will not read any media. It sounds like it's trying to spin up but then comes to a grinding halt and repeats this a few times before giving up. Though in My Computer it does show up as an Audio CD so it might be able to read a little bit.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI got a thinkpad w530 with Windowd 8 from the factory and its ultrabay worked really well. I use a few SSDs in the ultrabay and used to swap through them by just ejecting the one currently in use and plugging in another one. However, since Wondows 8.1 update I haven.t been able to do so, as I have to turn off the machine and change the drives.
I believe it has something to do with the OS set up. How to enable the hot swapping capability of the ultrabay?
I`ve just received my new notebook and I had already bought the SSD drive I would like to use with it.In the first moment I thought it would as easy as described hereURL.... but my notebook has the windows 8 and the OKR 8.0 and I can't find the option to create recovery discs.
I found out that I can make a recovery media, a pen drive with at least 16Gb, to recovery the system. I would like to make the same with DVDs. create the recovery discs or to reinstall the windows 8 from scratch with the same license key (not even sure if I have one) the one preinstalled in my notebook?
My x120e has been getting hot ever since I've got it.
Not doing much of anything, it'll be 75-80 degrees C. Full load, 95-99 C.
I've tried replacing the thermal compound, replacing the heatsink, the cpu is undervolted. It still runs quite hot. As I write this, the computer is 97% idle and still at 77 degrees C. It's sitting on a hardwood floor, so the vents on the bottom that I just blew out are clear.
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X40 - 2371 that I would like to reset to its original Factory Settings. It does not have a CD-ROM drive so I can not use a Recovery CD. Its operating system is Windows XP Professional. I have tried to use the "Access IBM" and the "F11" buttons to see if I can find any Factory Restore option, but there is none.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI got my w540 in about 2 weeks ago, and finally had a chance to start migrating everything to it last week. I bring my laptop(s) to and from work everyday and right now I'm bringing a w520 and my new w540. But everyday since I started bringing my w540 home with me when I get home the laptop is running when I take it out of my bag.
So yesterday and this morning, I made 100% sure the laptop was in sleep mode and nothing was running before I put the laptop in the bag. I get to work 15 minutes later and the laptop bag is about 150 degrees because the w540 is running even through the lid is closed.
My X1 Carbon started running super slow since last week. The disk C: shows I still have 49.2 GB free space to use. So I think the problem does not relate to the space size. I am wondering if there is any way to clear something in my computer and make it run as fast as before.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy W540 recently became unable to charge while the laptop is running. When the laptop is off, the battery will charge completely. As soon as Windows (or Linux) boots, the charge terminates and the computer starts running off battery power. The computer will boot without the battery installed, but the computer turns off as soon as either operating system is booted (a few seconds after the desktop appears).
I have tried a different power adapter without success (both adapters are Lenovo 170W supplies) and also put a different battery in (also genunie Lenovo battery) but the issue still remained.
The laptop is still under warranty, could it be the charging circuit on the motherboard? Will I have to ship the laptop back to Lenovo for repair? I am out at sea and might have to wait a while to get back into port to be able to ship the unit back to Lenovo, so I would like to investigate other options.
I'm contemplating upgrading from my Samsung 830 128gb to a Samsung 840 EVO 250gb, on my trusted x120e. The EVO has Full Disk Encryption (FDE) and I am curious to know if:
1. Turning on the FDE is done through the BIOS?
2. Do I need to enter the FDE password each time I reboot (like I have to with the hardware passwds?)
3. Is there a performance penalty (finite but negligible perhaps) for turning on the FDE?
4. Is the FDE significantly greater protection (in a practical sense) than just the (non-encrypting) hardware passwd (which nonetheless is quite effective in that the disk isn't recognized at all if used in another pc)?
5. My X120e is an AMD machine and the Samsung Magician software (most recent versions) works only for Intel machines. If the FDE is controlled through that sw, then I have a problem.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a W500 running Windows 7 which unexpectedly turns off, usually when asleep but sometimes also while on. The turn off happens as if the power is lost (say, the battery/AC cord are yanked out). After a turn off like that, I sometimes need to reconnect the battery and the AC cord. Did some reading here and elsewhere on the web and came upon the electrostatic suggestion. Was able to get it to turn back on at least a few times by touching the underside of the laptop, but that worked inconsistently.
Since it mostly happens when the unit is asleep, I pretty much ruled out the temperature and software issues.
Decided to check out the memory section pin bending solution. My laptop has to have it's palm rest taken off to access the RAM modules. People kept referring to some RAM door pins but since mine doesn't have a special RAM door, I bent some pins on the bottom of the palm rest and so far, not power loss but too early to tell.
I have a Lenovo ThinkPad W540 running Windows 8 (64 bit) connected to a ThinkPad Pro docking station and hooked up to a 24" widescreen monitor.
All was working perfectly for the past couple of days (since I got it) until today when the monitor will go blank, display a 'no signal' message, the laptop screen will flicker then after approx 15 seconds all is back to normal excepting the following message is displayed:-

I have a Pavilion dv7-1103ea laptop which I need to restore to factory settings. I created a recovery disk from the system but it has become corrupted. I gave my laptop in for repairs to a local repair shop. My laptop is now working but it is not in the same format as when I purchased it. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a "HP Pavilion TouchSmart 14-n005eo Ultrabook" running windows 8.1. This last Friday my computer got stuck and when I tried to reboot it said that something was wrong with windows and gave me the alternatives to fix it. I first tried to backup trough the program but got a Bluescreen (System thread exception not handled (iaStorA.sys). I then tried to just restore the Windows part (not effecting my files) but I got Blue screen. I then moved on to a full system reset (with my recover DVD that I fortunately had made just a couple of days before the crash) but after completed all 5 discs the computer rebooted and told that the system restore wasn't completed so I tried again, but I got the same problem.
The last thing I have tried is to make a factory reset and now (after the 5 disc) it started to reboot and a information that told that HP software were about to get installed came up. I left the computer to finish the install and when I checked later on it was turned of so i turned on the PC and after the message "Wait" I got Blue screen again (System thread exception not handled (iaStorA.sys)) and the same happens when I restart the computer.
I have an R61 and the green volume indicator bar has disappeared. I have googled for a solution but so far, nothing has worked.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just noticed that the green hotkeys volume bar has disappeared from two R500’s (2714-CTO) that I own. Both are running Windows 7 professional. One is running Windows 7 Professional 32 bit, while The other is running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. The 64 bit machine has just been re-imaged from a set of original Lenovo supplied recovery DVD’s. The reload process installed Norton Internet Security (2009). After the re-load was complete, I installed Windows 7 SP1 from an original Microsoft Windows 7 SP1 DVD. Next, I manually installed the latest version of Update Retriever and System Update, turned on the antenna for the first time, and ran System Update to update all Lenovo drivers.
The other machine has been running Windows 7 professional 32 bit since being purchased in 2009. It has never been re-imaged, and the green volume bar was working until recently.
Both are currently running Hotkey Features Integration V3.89.0000, and Lenovo Power Management V1.67.04.05.
which software, and which version of that software, is needed to get that functionality back.

I recently acquired a new Thinkpad W530 with Windows 7 Pro.
I want to immediately replace the 500gb main drive with a larger one. I plan to do this by imaging the system partition of the current drive to an external USB hdd, and then then writing the image to the larger one after it's installed in the W530.
My question: Can I then just store the original drive away as is, to use for recovery (should the need arise), in lieu of creating recovery media now?
It seems pretty clear the answer should be "yes," but since I've always used XP up until now I'm wondering if there are any kinds of Win 7-specific watchouts (maybe licensing-rleated?) that would keep things from being as simple as popping the original drive back in the main hdd slot to get things back to exactly where they are today?
I have made a Recovery disk on a USB Flash Drive using the Lenovo “create a recovery disk” in the Lenovo Solution Centre software.
The USB Drive seems to have been created successfully. It shows in Windows Disk Management as cbd_drive (D 14.48GB NTFS Healthy (Active, Primary Partition).
When I interrupt the boot with F12, The USB Drive comes up as an option (USB HDD: Sandisk Ultra), but when this option is selected, the screen flashes briefly, then returns back to the boot options again, so the USB drive will not boot properly – the boot fails and reverts back to the boot options screen.
The root directory of the USB contains the following -
BOOT (Folder)
FactoryRecovery (Folder)
usb.tag
winRE.wim
I have read other threads on here, and think I have covered the issues raised there. This is the first time I have used a USB flash drive as a recovery disk, so I may be missing something very basic.

I have a laptop in our lab that was full of a bunch of software that had been installed over the last year or so and I was trying to bring it back to how it was shipped from the factory. After booting with the F8 option then through Advanced Options I selected to restore the laptop to the factory image since there was no data that I needed from the unit. After the laptop restoration was finished I now boot to the BSOD and it perpetually asks for a startup repair which does not work. I made this unit a door stopper needless to say since there are no disks included in the purchase. Is there any way to get this laptop back to factory?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently ordered a new Carbon X1 20A7 for a VP here and noticed that it, as well as all the other sets we receive for the T430's, W530, etc all contain 4 things - 3 discs and a small pamphlet. The Pamphlet explains that the discs should be labeled 1 2 3 and all (Ive checked an order of 100 T430s and the first 17 boxes are all wrong) contain 2 x #1 and a #2 - I have looked in the old lab and found older shipments that all contain similar 1 1 2 instead of 1 2 3 .

I want to upgrade my S230u with the 500GB HDD to a 7mm 2,5" 480GB SSD (Corsair Force GS 480GB SATA3).
I am wondering how can I later on clone my OS from the HDD to SSD? Is it possible to plug the SSD in over USB, use some tool to clone the entire disk (including the recovery partition) and then simply switch to SSD?
Also, once I do that, how do I disable express cache and ideally disable using the built-in 24GB SSD? I am not interested in IRST as I tend to use hibernation a lot.
