Aug 3, 2009Is it worth it to pay the extra $250 for the RGBLED? Or is the WLED LCD just fine for Blu-ray viewing?

Aug 13, 2009RGBLED vs WLED, both 1920x1080. I already ordered my sxps16 on 8-4-09, I went with the WLED, I bought it when it was 25% off select laptops, couldn't pick RGBLED at that time.
I have been racking my brain about this, tried to cancel but it was to late. Should be here soon, ten days since order and still not shipped. I HATE WAITING! They told me after I recieved the laptop I could return it.

Aug 23, 2009I just orderet an Dell XPS 16 with a WLED 1080P screen and i should have it on the 25. of August.
Then yesterday i went to dell's side and now they offer the same laptop at same price but with the RGBLED screen instead.
It seems its a new RGBLED screen as its not 16" but 15,6" as the WLED screen.
I dunno what to do. Would you guys return the laptop and order a new one with the RGBLED instead?

Nov 5, 2009my order is being messed up with a 15.6" WLED 1080p screen, but I asked for a 16" RGBLED 1080p screen. I read on here that sometimes Dell installs an RGBLED even though it says WLED. How would an end user tell the difference, apart from "colour", which is subjective? Like is there a way to show it in something such as Device Manager or is there a way to look at your part somehow? I'd rather not rip my screen apart, but if it's not RGBLED then Dell is going to have to send a tech and the right screen.

Mar 3, 2010Has anybody ordered the RGBLED display and received the WLED one instead? I ordered the RBGLED (as shown on my receipt and Dell confirmation email) but my shipping confirmation says WLED. I am on the phone with them now, but they are only seeing WLED now (since that's what it's now showing for them). If you had this issue, how did you get it resolved?

May 5, 2010I just bought a Dell Studio XPS 16 second hand, advertised with an RGBLED screen.
The laptop works great but I am very sceptical about this display, all the reviews harp on about how amazing it looks but I can't really see much of a difference between this screen and my WLED monitor.

Is there like any annecdotal evidence over the years that Latitude notebooks are more reliable than Inspirons? Less prone to breakdown? After all they were built for stability in mind. Is it worth paying the extra price for a Latitude model of comparable specs to an Inspiron model?
Dell :: M1530 Differences In Parts (especially Heatsink)
Oct 9, 2008I received a new M1530 because the one I received have a couple of cosmetic flaws that were due to poor worksmanship (dents, scratches, etc.). I've been playing and comparing these two M1530's and I've noticed several things. My old M1530 came with the Optiarc DVD+/-RW drive and the new M1530 came with a Matsh1ta DVD+/-RW drive. I know a lot of people have complained about the DVD drive being noisy. Well.. the Matsh1ta drive is quiet! The Optiarc drive is super noisy. On to more things.. The old M1530 came with a Samsung 5400rpm 250GB harddrive, the new M1530 came with a WD 5400rpm 250GB hardrive.
None of that matters though because it has been replaced by a Seagate 7200rpm 320GB hardrive, and stuck the WD 5400rpm 250GB into my PS3.
OLD M1530:
Optiarc DVD+/-RW drive (SUPER NOISY)
Samsung 5400rpm 250GB harddrive
MADE IN CHINA 6-Cell battery
Cheaper Heatsink Assembly (Metal alloy transfer surfaces)
NEW M1530:
Matsh1ta DVD+/-RW drive (PRETTY QUIET)
WD 5400rpm 250GB hardrive
MADE IN JAPAN 6-Cell batter
Better Heatsink Assembly (Copper transfer surfaces)
The heatsink assembly is a big deal because we all know these things can get pretty hot, and we all know that copper has very good heat transfer properties. On the old M1530, the transfer surface is copper ONLY FOR THE CPU, leaving the GPU and Chipset with some metal alloy. Well the new M1530 I received have copper for all the transfer surfaces! COPPER IS BETTER!

Feb 16, 2009There was a discussion on this subject before but I can't find it. Currently I own XPS 1330 with nVidia GPU and LED screen. My GPU died a while ago, was replaced.
After that I applied copper mod. But it will die some time in future again. So I'm thinking to replace my mobo with one that has integrated GPU.

Jan 27, 2009I currently have a Latitude E6400 that I LOVE...except for the display. I bought it from the Outlet and it was such a good deal that I couldn't pass it up. But it has the WXGA (1280x800) CCFL display and I really wanted the WXGA+ LED.
I'm in the process of finding its replacement, again from Dell Outlet. I'm seriously thikning about stepping up a size to the E6500 and getting the WUXGA (1920x1200) display. The Outlet also has a surprising number of Precision M4400s in stock, too. I've also found several of those with the WUXGA display that I want.
I don't "need" the more powerful graphics card in the M4400. But I really like (make that- LOVE) the exterior design of the Precision

May 20, 2009I'm winding down my search for a new laptop for business and personal use, and after a week or so of due diligence researching windows alternatives I've all but decided to return to Apple.
In deciding whether the MBP is worth an extra $400, my question to the Apple subforum is: What (other) differences are there between the MB and MBP?
Obviously, their footprints are different, and they have different screen resolutions, and the 9600 GPU is exclusive to the MBP. The MB isn't offered with factory 7200 hard drives, but since Macs don't need to be restarted as often as Windows PCs, I don't place a lot of value on that. I have a 1TB external drive w/ FW and USB. I'd be sad to give up Firewire, but I could live with using its USB connection...
What I'm wondering is whether there are other differences that add value to the MBP. I've read that, resolution aside, the MBP has a higher-quality display. Is there any truth to this? Is it that noticeable? Is it true, but inconsiderable? Or is it just flat-out wrong?
Along those lines, are there other differences that would make the MBP more attractive?

Feb 15, 2009Following up on some discussion of how small the text is on the RGBLED (pronounced R G Bleed?) in standard DPI, it's just too small for me. I would have preferred a resolution around the 1680x1050 range on a notebook this size.
The other standard definitions that are available are not 16:9 so they don't work well, and using other resolutions than the native LCD resolution generally results in a loss of sharpness.
It also occurs that using non-standard DPI settings result in skewing or lowering quality of images and page layouts in browsers and some desktop applications as well. Someone else can probably give a technical reason as to why this is. All I know is I see it. I see text running over into other text on web pages and text out of place on desktop applications (rarely), especially dialog boxes (more often). I'm sure this is due to the fact that the rendering program is expecting smaller text. What is happening, I think, is that the DPI setting is just changing the rendered size of the text, but the rest of the rendering (images, graphics, borders, window edges, etc.) is using standard dimensions/resolution .....

Mar 5, 2010I wanted to share with the forum some strange, yet interesting findings that I've come up with in the last week or so.
First, some background. I am the IT manager/senior admin for my company. I do all of the purchasing and high end tech stuff, so I get to play with a fair amount of hardware and equipment before deploying it to the company.
For the last year or so, I've owned an E4300 as my work laptop, and have been purchasing E6400's to deploy to our company. Some of our consultants have dual internal hard drives using the Newmodeus optical bay caddy, and use an esata/usb combo port to power their optical devices when they need. We also utilize the Coolmax esata/usb enclosures for external drives. All of these devices work great on our older E6400's and my E4300.
Recently, I made another order of some E6400's and 2 E6500's as a trial. No matter what I do, the Newmodeus cables (I have a hard drive one as well) will NOT work with the E6500 and 1 of our new E6400s. Occasionally, by wiggling the cable in the plug and pushing hard, I can get a device to be detected for a few seconds. I decided to have Dell come out and replace the motherboard in 1 to see if I got a defective board.
Well, that didn't help at all, so I dug a little deeper. I borrowed a colleagues Coolmax enclosure, and plugged that in. To my amazement, it worked fine. I compared the esata cables....and the Coolmax cable is ~1-2mm longer than the Newmodeus cables.
The port depth on some of these machines must be a little deeper than others, not allowing the cable to fully seat and get a good connection. I have 2 E6500's and 1 E6400 with this issue.
My next plan of attack is to use a small saw to cut a little of the plastic off the Newmodeus cables to see if I can get them to seat a little deeper. I will report back my findings. I never thought something so simple would be such a PITA.

Dec 27, 2009Is the 15'6 inch full hd wled screen the same good viewing angles I hear about on the 16'' RGB? or are they different?
This is really important to me because I have allready returned a handfull of laptops due to rubbish viewing angles and a washed out black on darker images/websites,
really irritating me now! and the dell xps 16 seems to crop up as having the best screen, but I can't really afford the RGB screen, so was wondering if the wled is just as good viewing angle wise?

Feb 23, 2010I'm in the process of identifying my next laptop to replace my 4 year old aspire and have come across the i5 core 5740 and 5942...
Both have the same processor i5 520
Both have the same graphics card ATI 5650
Both have a BD-ROM/DVD-RW
But the 5740 i've seen at £700 and the 5942 at £940.
Apart from a slightly larger hard-drive, the media board instead of the number pad and the backlit keyboard. What else would does the 5942 have that would constitute a £240 difference?

i found the 1080p in my studio xps crap.
i think 720p is perfect for that screen.

If usage is web browsing, movie watching, some digital pics manipulation (non-professional), does it make sense to get i7 with WLED or i5 with RGB?..
