Dell :: M1530 Differences In Parts (especially Heatsink)

Oct 9, 2008

I received a new M1530 because the one I received have a couple of cosmetic flaws that were due to poor worksmanship (dents, scratches, etc.). I've been playing and comparing these two M1530's and I've noticed several things. My old M1530 came with the Optiarc DVD+/-RW drive and the new M1530 came with a Matsh1ta DVD+/-RW drive. I know a lot of people have complained about the DVD drive being noisy. Well.. the Matsh1ta drive is quiet! The Optiarc drive is super noisy. On to more things.. The old M1530 came with a Samsung 5400rpm 250GB harddrive, the new M1530 came with a WD 5400rpm 250GB hardrive.

None of that matters though because it has been replaced by a Seagate 7200rpm 320GB hardrive, and stuck the WD 5400rpm 250GB into my PS3.

OLD M1530:
Optiarc DVD+/-RW drive (SUPER NOISY)
Samsung 5400rpm 250GB harddrive
MADE IN CHINA 6-Cell battery
Cheaper Heatsink Assembly (Metal alloy transfer surfaces)

NEW M1530:
Matsh1ta DVD+/-RW drive (PRETTY QUIET)
WD 5400rpm 250GB hardrive
MADE IN JAPAN 6-Cell batter
Better Heatsink Assembly (Copper transfer surfaces)

The heatsink assembly is a big deal because we all know these things can get pretty hot, and we all know that copper has very good heat transfer properties. On the old M1530, the transfer surface is copper ONLY FOR THE CPU, leaving the GPU and Chipset with some metal alloy. Well the new M1530 I received have copper for all the transfer surfaces! COPPER IS BETTER!

Dell :: Changed My Heatsink/fan Unit On My M1530

Nov 7, 2009

So as far as I know fan behavior can be determined or changed via the following:

1) The bios determines behavior and it can be changed if the bios supports such features
2) Through software that can monitor and change fan behavior such as SpeedFan.
3) Through hardware such as a fan controller, where the user can control the voltage that reaches a fan, thus the speed.

I recently changed my heatsink/fan unit on my M1530 and the fan does this annoying "speed up cool down and stop then heat up" cycle rather than retain a constant temperature.

I dont want the 10C cool/heat cycles to constantly wear down my components. Someone told me that the fan on my old heatsink/fan unit would not have variable speeds like that and retain a constant temperature and speed.

I can not tell from the past as the heatsink was terrible and the temperatures where always high (thus the fan was constantly going full blast).

Dell :: XPS M1530 Heatsink Copper Or Aluminum?

May 10, 2009

There are 3 known revisions of the heatsink. The first and second shown here while the third being another copper one but with smaller heat plates.

I know technically copper should be better since it is a better conductor than aluminum.

I have the aluminum revision but was thinking of buying a copper one off ebay. However before doing so I found a thread which noted some differences I didn't notice.

Which parts of the M1530 can be upgraded or exchanged for similar parts? For example could I switch out a 2.5" 128GB SSD with any 2.5" HDD, or would it be possible to upgrade from a centrino duo santa rosa core 2 duo processor to the new centrino 2 monteniva core 2 duo processor? (since it voids your warranty would it be possible to switch the processors back if needed?)

Dell :: I Can't Buy M1710 Parts From SPARE PARTS W/o An M1710 SVC TAG #

Feb 21, 2008

I was going to be assembling an m1710 this weekend....

I called Dell Spare Parts a few days ago, and placed an order for the following;

HG345 Refurb bottom plastics, m1710
FF084 Refurb palmrest assy, m1710
J8841 Refurb speakers, LED, m1710
CF426 Refurb hinge cover, m1710

I've been watching the order on Dell's site all week, as it was scheduled to ship (on or before today) (2/21/08), and I opted for Next Day shipping.

When I placed the order, the woman I spoke with asked for my Service Tag number. I, um... don't HAVE one... I didn't say this, I simply said I don't have that information at the moment. She asked how I got the part numbers, and I told her from their own Spare Parts page.

Well....the order got cancelled today. Saw it online while at work, just before I left for the day. Another order number with the identical items was created, with a scheduled ship date of 3/3/08. WHAT?

The woman just called....she states they cannot process my order without a service tag number. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!

I told her I don't have a tag number....she asked if I was building one. "Yes." To which I hear...

"Oh....well, I don't think our supplier will allow that without a service tag number, because we reserve those parts for people who bought m1710's."

I said "That's amazing...because I know a number of people who have done the same thing I'm trying to do, and had no problems getting these parts."

"Well, that's because they have m1710's"

*mad enought to scream at this point* "Um, no...where do you think I got the idea from?? I'm certainly not the first person to have this idea."

how I can get them to sell me some refurbished plastics? What's the secret password?

Dell :: Latitude Vs Inspiron Key Differences

What's the difference between Latitude vs Inspiron Dell notebooks?

Now, I know that Latitude is for business use and Inspiron is for home use, but what does that mean?

Is there like any annecdotal evidence over the years that Latitude notebooks are more reliable than Inspirons? Less prone to breakdown? After all they were built for stability in mind. Is it worth paying the extra price for a Latitude model of comparable specs to an Inspiron model?

Dell :: Latitude E6500 Vs. Precision M4400- Differences?

Jan 27, 2009

I currently have a Latitude E6400 that I LOVE...except for the display. I bought it from the Outlet and it was such a good deal that I couldn't pass it up. But it has the WXGA (1280x800) CCFL display and I really wanted the WXGA+ LED.

I'm in the process of finding its replacement, again from Dell Outlet. I'm seriously thikning about stepping up a size to the E6500 and getting the WUXGA (1920x1200) display. The Outlet also has a surprising number of Precision M4400s in stock, too. I've also found several of those with the WUXGA display that I want.

I don't "need" the more powerful graphics card in the M4400. But I really like (make that- LOVE) the exterior design of the Precision

Apple :: Differences Between Late-'08 MB & MBP

May 20, 2009

I'm winding down my search for a new laptop for business and personal use, and after a week or so of due diligence researching windows alternatives I've all but decided to return to Apple.

In deciding whether the MBP is worth an extra $400, my question to the Apple subforum is: What (other) differences are there between the MB and MBP?

Obviously, their footprints are different, and they have different screen resolutions, and the 9600 GPU is exclusive to the MBP. The MB isn't offered with factory 7200 hard drives, but since Macs don't need to be restarted as often as Windows PCs, I don't place a lot of value on that. I have a 1TB external drive w/ FW and USB. I'd be sad to give up Firewire, but I could live with using its USB connection...

What I'm wondering is whether there are other differences that add value to the MBP. I've read that, resolution aside, the MBP has a higher-quality display. Is there any truth to this? Is it that noticeable? Is it true, but inconsiderable? Or is it just flat-out wrong?

Along those lines, are there other differences that would make the MBP more attractive?

Dell :: Heatsink Replacement...

Have finally got Dell to agree to replace my motherboard (my 3rd in 18 months), but they say I also need a new heatsink/fan to fix my overheating GPU problems (100 degrees + under load).

They are doing the motherboard under warranty, but refusing to pay for the heatsink. According to them, the two issues are not connected...

My question is, is there any point having the heatsink replaced if it's just going to be the same defective component?

Dell :: ESata Plug Differences: E6500 Vs. E6400 Vs. E4300

Mar 5, 2010

I wanted to share with the forum some strange, yet interesting findings that I've come up with in the last week or so.

First, some background. I am the IT manager/senior admin for my company. I do all of the purchasing and high end tech stuff, so I get to play with a fair amount of hardware and equipment before deploying it to the company.

For the last year or so, I've owned an E4300 as my work laptop, and have been purchasing E6400's to deploy to our company. Some of our consultants have dual internal hard drives using the Newmodeus optical bay caddy, and use an esata/usb combo port to power their optical devices when they need. We also utilize the Coolmax esata/usb enclosures for external drives. All of these devices work great on our older E6400's and my E4300.

Recently, I made another order of some E6400's and 2 E6500's as a trial. No matter what I do, the Newmodeus cables (I have a hard drive one as well) will NOT work with the E6500 and 1 of our new E6400s. Occasionally, by wiggling the cable in the plug and pushing hard, I can get a device to be detected for a few seconds. I decided to have Dell come out and replace the motherboard in 1 to see if I got a defective board.

Well, that didn't help at all, so I dug a little deeper. I borrowed a colleagues Coolmax enclosure, and plugged that in. To my amazement, it worked fine. I compared the esata cables....and the Coolmax cable is ~1-2mm longer than the Newmodeus cables.

The port depth on some of these machines must be a little deeper than others, not allowing the cable to fully seat and get a good connection. I have 2 E6500's and 1 E6400 with this issue.

My next plan of attack is to use a small saw to cut a little of the plastic off the Newmodeus cables to see if I can get them to seat a little deeper. I will report back my findings. I never thought something so simple would be such a PITA.

Acer :: 5942/5740 Differences

I'm in the process of identifying my next laptop to replace my 4 year old aspire and have come across the i5 core 5740 and 5942...

Both have the same processor i5 520
Both have the same graphics card ATI 5650
Both have a BD-ROM/DVD-RW

But the 5740 i've seen at £700 and the 5942 at £940.

Apart from a slightly larger hard-drive, the media board instead of the number pad and the backlit keyboard. What else would does the 5942 have that would constitute a £240 difference?

Dell :: Vostro 1400 -- New Heatsink

Feb 18, 2010

I should have said microprocessing cooling unit, not heatsink!

My Dell Vostro 1400 laptop has been running hotter with age (it's two years old). About 5 minutes after startup the core temp hits 50-60C, the fan kicks in, the core goes down to 30C, the fan kicks off. This cycle occurs about every 5 minutes or so. I've cleaned the fan area thoroughly and am using i8kfanGUI. I'm wondering if replacing the microprocessing cooling unit will help keep the core temp down. They're pretty cheap, about £15 on eBay. Here's what I'm looking at:

What do you guys think? Will a new microprocessing cooling unit make a significant difference in keeping down my core temp?

Dell :: Heatsink Mod M1330 XPS By BlackRussian

Jun 24, 2009

Above the two types of cooling units with standard heatsinks of the M1330 XPS

M1330 XPS Heatsink Mod by BlackRussian.

This mod is to provide a better cooling system on my Dell M1330 XPS laptops which already has a cooper plate on video chip.
The main mod is concentrated around the nVidia video chip, the CPU will be done at a later date for all you overclockers out there!

3x Aluminum Heatsink. I use a heatsink taken from an old desktop PC motherboard and cut/file to size.(Chipset or Video card)
1x L 38mm x H 6mm x D 11mm for the bigger heatsink and 1x L 38mm x H 6mm x D 8mm for smaller heatsink.
1x Thermal paste (AS5 etc to your fancy)
1x Thermal adhesive kit (Aritic SilverThermal adhesive) Warning! See foot note below.
1x Copper plate.
Cleaning agents (Pure alcohol or something like Aceton) , cotton face wipe..
1x Junior hacksaw
Set of flat files
Clean work area.
Oven. (Preheat on high temp 5mins before placing cooling unit inside oven)
Set of screwdrivers size #0 and #00 Philips or Pozidriv
Optional tools. 2 mini G clamps

Thermal adhesive Do not use this product on your CPU or Video chip as it will bond to it and you will not be able to remove the thermal adhesive once it set's on the chips without damaging the chips.

Measurements had been taken with the cooling unit still in place and allowing enough space from Ram cards & base plate inner edge for removing the final cooling unit. See
All done and back in my M1330 XPS laptop photo.
Once you have your heatsinks cut/filed and cleaned to the right size maximum height 7mm (5.5mm should be used to be on the safe side otherwise final adjustment with a flat file will correct any over high problem) we need to open up our laptop.

Before under going any services to your laptop make sure that you ground yourself or be very careful of static change while workings on your Laptop refer to your handbook or service manual.....................

Dell :: XPS 2 Northbridge Heatsink: E1705

Feb 27, 2008

I'm buying either a FX2500m or 7900GTX so I'll need the heatsink to complete the mod of course.

Is there anyway to tell if I already have the heatsink without dismantling my laptop and peeking inside? (I know if I have a dual-pipe card I'd of course have it, just wondering if there was a way to assume). I have a 7800GS in this thing so I'm not 100% sure if it's a single pipe with no heatsink or a dual pipe with a heatsink.

So I just wanted some opinions on if it was safe to assume that I need the heatsink. (I would rather only dismantle the laptop once, when I'm putting the heatsink and card into it, figured some people who have opened them up a few times would know if I'm more likely to have a single pipe or dual).

Dell :: Heatsink Part # From 1340 With G210M GPU

Dell just upgraded my faulty 9500m mother board to the latest rev with the G 210M. Problem is the old heatsink and fan combo (part number U943D) will no longer fit as the screw post location has changed.

Images below reflect the changes.
1st 1340 w/9500m with dell part #U943D
2nd 1340 w/G210m (just cant read Part#)
3rd My mainbaord and fan the tech said would work (without a heatsink on gpu. Yeah I know.. )

If you look close the heatsink right under the fan (and fan is different too) is different on the right side as the screw moves up.

Can anyone with the G210m give me the part number of the fan and heatsink?
Dell for the life of them cant figure it out and have sent the wrong parts 4 times already. Its really getting frustrating. Any and all part numbers or High detailed readable pictures would be greatly apreciated!!!
