Dell :: XPS M1530 Upgradeable/Exchangeable Parts
Dec 8, 2008
Which parts of the M1530 can be upgraded or exchanged for similar parts? For example could I switch out a 2.5" 128GB SSD with any 2.5" HDD, or would it be possible to upgrade from a centrino duo santa rosa core 2 duo processor to the new centrino 2 monteniva core 2 duo processor? (since it voids your warranty would it be possible to switch the processors back if needed?)

Meaning if I buy with just 4GB, can I upgrade later without breaking the warranty? Same with SSD and optical options

I received a new M1530 because the one I received have a couple of cosmetic flaws that were due to poor worksmanship (dents, scratches, etc.). I've been playing and comparing these two M1530's and I've noticed several things. My old M1530 came with the Optiarc DVD+/-RW drive and the new M1530 came with a Matsh1ta DVD+/-RW drive. I know a lot of people have complained about the DVD drive being noisy. Well.. the Matsh1ta drive is quiet! The Optiarc drive is super noisy. On to more things.. The old M1530 came with a Samsung 5400rpm 250GB harddrive, the new M1530 came with a WD 5400rpm 250GB hardrive.
None of that matters though because it has been replaced by a Seagate 7200rpm 320GB hardrive, and stuck the WD 5400rpm 250GB into my PS3.
OLD M1530:
Optiarc DVD+/-RW drive (SUPER NOISY)
Samsung 5400rpm 250GB harddrive
MADE IN CHINA 6-Cell battery
Cheaper Heatsink Assembly (Metal alloy transfer surfaces)
NEW M1530:
Matsh1ta DVD+/-RW drive (PRETTY QUIET)
WD 5400rpm 250GB hardrive
MADE IN JAPAN 6-Cell batter
Better Heatsink Assembly (Copper transfer surfaces)
The heatsink assembly is a big deal because we all know these things can get pretty hot, and we all know that copper has very good heat transfer properties. On the old M1530, the transfer surface is copper ONLY FOR THE CPU, leaving the GPU and Chipset with some metal alloy. Well the new M1530 I received have copper for all the transfer surfaces! COPPER IS BETTER!

I was going to be assembling an m1710 this weekend....
I called Dell Spare Parts a few days ago, and placed an order for the following;
HG345 Refurb bottom plastics, m1710
FF084 Refurb palmrest assy, m1710
J8841 Refurb speakers, LED, m1710
CF426 Refurb hinge cover, m1710
I've been watching the order on Dell's site all week, as it was scheduled to ship (on or before today) (2/21/08), and I opted for Next Day shipping.
When I placed the order, the woman I spoke with asked for my Service Tag number. I, um... don't HAVE one... I didn't say this, I simply said I don't have that information at the moment. She asked how I got the part numbers, and I told her from their own Spare Parts page.
Well....the order got cancelled today. Saw it online while at work, just before I left for the day. Another order number with the identical items was created, with a scheduled ship date of 3/3/08. WHAT?
The woman just called....she states they cannot process my order without a service tag number. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!
I told her I don't have a tag number....she asked if I was building one. "Yes." To which I hear...
"Oh....well, I don't think our supplier will allow that without a service tag number, because we reserve those parts for people who bought m1710's."
I said "That's amazing...because I know a number of people who have done the same thing I'm trying to do, and had no problems getting these parts."
"Well, that's because they have m1710's"
*mad enought to scream at this point* "Um, no...where do you think I got the idea from?? I'm certainly not the first person to have this idea."
how I can get them to sell me some refurbished plastics? What's the secret password?

I have been looking in this forum for the answer but I've yet to find it. I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to get the BIOS to use the entire 4GB of ram that is installed when putting 2 x 2gb RAM? Is there a BIOS hack that will work? I currently have BIOS ver. A09.

Wondering if the the CPU and / or GPU on the Precision M4400 / M6600 are user upgradeable? Both in terms of is it physically possible and how does it affect warranty. If it voids the warranty, how likely is it that they can tell that it was upgraded if you swap the oringinal components back in before sending it in.

I'm looking into a college notebook that has great specs. I know it seems a little on the big side, but I think I can manage. Usually college students don't take laptops to class all the time, right?

I want to save money now and get this notebook with the regular DVD RW drive. Maybe later I want to upgrade to Blu Ray. However, is this even possible? If so, does it void my warranty?

I got a Acer Extensa 4420-5239 in September 08 and now im running into problems. I want to upgrade my video card and RAM but i need to know if it even is upgradeable. If someone can tell me if it is and what Graphic cards and RAM are compatible with it that would be great. Also if it is upgradeable I was going to have the Geek Squad Upgrade it, if they can.

I'm considering buying a new Vaio Z series, and I'm trying to keep the initial price to a minimum whilst maximising what I need Sony to do at the factory.
So, what components are upgradeable?
Obvious ones:
- RAM
- HDD/SSD
- CPU
- GPU
- WWAN - can I add this at a later date should I find I need it?
From my research on here, I (think I) understand that the SSD isn't upgradeable due to a proprietary connector - what about buying a Z with a standard SATA drive? Does this use a standard SATA connector (and enable purchasing SSD drives aftermarket)?

I'm thinking about diving into the purchase of the HP dv8t, everything about looks good on paper except that the video card is a bit anemic.
I want to know if the motherboard uses the MXM standard and if the GeForce GT 230M inside is upgradeable in the future or is it soldered onto the motherboard?
Isn't it the replacement for HDX18?

I just purchased a refurb XPS 1640. Its got pretty good specs for the price. P8700, 4670, 16" RGB 1080p., 4GB, 320 HD. The things it seems to be lacking are:
1. Backlit keyboard??? I assumed these were standard. Am I wrong?
2. Bluetooth
3. Slot loading DVD. It appears to be a tray system???
I love all the other specs on this system and I'm super excited about the screen. I plan on getting an aftermarket bluray drive. So, my question is can I upgrade all of these things on my own? Is the keyboard swappable with a backlit one? Can I add the internal bluetooth card? and can I replace the non-slot loading DVD drive with a slot-loading bluray drive??? Parts seem to be readily available on ebay.

I was interested in getting another hard drive caddy for a 1545 but looking on Dell's website by model # they do not even list the 1545 per se.
They have a choice for "15" which I assume will include anything across the board for the 15 "family" models so I looked in there but no parts like this.
I tried ebay and googling around, found several places that sell spare Dell parts, even called & spoke to one but it seems to me that (a) Dell doesn't sell a part like this separately, and (b) places that do sell these kinds of parts are salvaging them from old/dead PCs and since the 1545 is a fairly new model spare parts haven't really surfaced for it yet.
Am curious if folks here know of any decent places to find this kind of thing though, since I certainly could be overlooking something!

I'm looking for an extra Hard Drive bezel/Caddy (the flimsy plastic piece you screw onto your hard drive) for my Vostro 1500. The piece has to cost pennies to make, but I'm having a hard time finding one.
I was appalled to find it here at this price ($45):

Anyone know of a good place to find this part?
They have the entire caddy for sale on ebay, but I'm just looking for the plastic piece:

There is now a no-leather option on the laptop, in this config they charge $40 for the leather
There is now a 1920x1080 NON RGBLED screen (it'ss still LED), the upgrade is only $75.
The cart is reporting my BASE screen as 1600x900 instead of 1366...
Here's my config for $1156 (7% discount, no negotiation, not including taxes)

My video card died, so i NEED to get either a 7900GTX, 7950GTX, FX2500, or FX3500. I've found the FX's to be cheaper, so i think ill just go with one of those.
There are absolutely no differences right between the GTX's and the FX's?
My specs as of now:
T2400 (1.83GHz) It's so slow..
1GB RAM
60GB HD.
Thinking about doing a RAM upgrade and CPU shortly.

Few days before i started a thread regarding the display issue .. and today i was got a replacement for my keyboard...
the old one was very strong and sturdy ... the new one was fragile, and flexible.. i called the CC then and reported that teh keyboard is very fragile...
he told me that currently all replacement keyboards are like that...
it seems that Indian customers are the ones who have been ill treated with cheap parts...

My laptop is a 1.5ghz C2D, 8600M GT DDR2 256mb (ARGH no ddr3), 160gb 5400RPM 8mb cache, with 2gb DDR2 667mhz...
yesterday, I got a 2GB Stick, (meaning I will have 3GB under Windows Vista 32-bit), and a 7200RPM 16mb cache harddrive (320gb fujitsu) to be exact.
I saw the processor upgrades, and I kept hearing it's fine for gaming unless I'm going to do heavy video editing, photoshopping do it, but do memory upgrade first, and I kept hearing HDD upgrade helps with everyday flow of operation (faster overall, meaning load up, booting, etc).
Will I see a decent performance/noticeable amount?
So now, it's 1.5GHZ C2D (T5250), 8600M GT DDR2 256MB, 320GB 7200RPM 16MB CACHE, HD-DVD/DVD-/+RW, 3GB DDR2 667MZ.
My next on the lsit is upgrade CPU to T7300, and if I can, upgrade the graphics card.
Maybe Bluetooth add-on since my phone can support syncing with that junk.
So yea, T7300, and maybe Radeon 3650 ddr3 or 8600 ddr3

My Sony Vaio Z's power plug portion is very flimsy and feels and loose (I am referring to the place where you plug your power cord into the computer left of the stamina-speed switch). The entire silver plastic part wobbles significantly.
