Dell :: E6400 And E-Port Plus Dual External Display
Jul 21, 2009
I've got a co-worker that just got an E6400 and E-Port Plus docking station with 130W power supply.
The machine is running 32-bit Windows XP with an nVidia Quadro NVS 160m and she has two Dell 2001FP monitors connected to the DVI ports on the docking station.
I can't seem to get dual displays on the external monitors. With the laptop closed and docked, the machine only recognizes one of the monitors that is plugged in to the dock.

So I've just got a e6400 for e-port plus.
Is it possible to have two external monitors AND the laptop display all running at the same time? If so how?
Even better would be this: I have two external monitors - both vga with no DVI (oh well). Can I get this working?

I am planning to get 2x 23inch monitors 1920x1200. So now here is the situation. I want to connect both of these to my sony vaio z. I have found solutions such as the Matrox DualHead2Go box and what not.. But i was wondering if i can get the sony z docking station and use that for dual output. Unlike some other threads that i've read my situation would be to plug the hdmi on the laptop to monitor1 and the dvi from the docking station to monitor 2.

I have a 13.3" MBP and a HP LP3065 monitor. At times, I would like to use the monitor for more real estate. I know there is the Apple mini display port to dual-link dvi adapter. Are there any other options that I will be able to use my monitor at 2560x1600 resolution with the MBP?
The reviews for the apple adapter suck and basically all of them have flickering issues. I would hate to buy it, return it, and waste my time on something I know that has a great chance of failure.
I also have Logitech Z-5500 speakers that I would like to use with my Macbook. Would a toslink to mini-toslink cable work?

I have a X230 (model 2357G) with a type 4338 dock. I'm currently running dual 1920x108 monitors via the dual DVI ports in the dock. But I wonder if the dual Displayports in the dock can handle something with a higher resolution like dual 3840x2160 monitors ?

I know there are users who have been able to get sound out of their E6400s over Displayport, but all the users i have heard from and read about this from have had integrated intel video. Are there any E6400 with nVidia quadro nvs160 users that have successfully gotten digital audio out through the displayport using a displayport --> HDMI cable?

I have recently purchased a W540 and connected to my Dell u3011 30" monitor. I used the Dual Link DVI-D cable that came with the monitor and plugged it into my Ultra Dock. The maximum resolution i can get is 1920x1080? When i change over to a Display port cable i can achieve the full 2560 x 1600 resolution? Is there something i need to do in addition to achieve the full 2560x1600 resolution with the DVI-D dual link cable? I want to be able to connect 2 laptops to the one monitor and only have 1 display port input so i need to be able to use the DVI cable on the 2nd machine while still achieving 2560x1600 resolution.

I have a Dell M4400 with nVidia 770 and I also have a Dell 3007WFP which supports 2560x1600 native resolution. Does anyone know if the M4400 will support this resolution if I dock it to an E-Port Replicator and use the DVI output of the docking station to the 3007WFP? When I looked at the Dell manual for the E-Port Replicator (and also the Plus) it didn't say if the DVI output supports dual-link.

I've just received a work Dimension E6400 with E-Port Replicator. I have two Dell 2001FP (max res 1600x1200) monitors that I have connected to the VGA port and the DVI port on the E-Port Replicator.
On the VGA connected monitor, I get 1600x1200 resolution. On the DVI-connected one, I can NOT get 1600x1200 (even with 16-bit color on one or both monitors). On DVI, I can only get max 1280x1024 or 1440x900.
I have tried all kinds of combinations but I can't get 1600x1200 out of the DVI. My E6400 has all the latest specs (I've checked) such as the latest BIOS, latest chipset (incl. graphics).
1. Is the E6400 capable of driving two 1600x1200 displays?
2. If I get a DVI to VGA converter and connect to VGA ports on both monitors, will I be able to get 1600x1200 on both?
3. If I buy a E-Port Plus Replicator and connect both monitors to the two VGA ports on that, will that give me 1600x1200 on both?
4. My old Dell monitors don't have DisplayPort connections (just DVI and VGA). Is there some way that I can connect the DisplayPort, on the E-Port, to a VGA monitor?

USB 2.0 is slow for a back up drive and moving data.
My Studio 17 has a dedicated eSata port which moves data at 3.0GB/sec. Now I would like an SSD drive, with an eSata enclosure. So I can rapidly hookup, back up and go.
Any ideas of what I need or how to go about this.?

just got my new E6400 and I am having a problem with dual external displays. My displays are:
Samsung 204B (20", 1600x1200)
Dell 1708FP (17", 1280x1024)
The problem is the samsung only works using an analog VGA cable. If I even plug in the DVI cable, the samsung will not detect any output from the laptop/dock. I have tried installing the samsing display drivers, but that did not fix the issue. This was not a problem on my old thinkpad T41 that this new dell replaced, so although possible, I doubt the monitor has suddenly developed a bad DVI port.
If I use the Dell as the primary with the samsung hooked up using both cables, I can see two instances of the samsung, it just won't display anything until I pull the DVI cable.
My E6400 has the NVidia NVS 160 card. Running Vista 64 with the 64-bit NVidia drivers from Dell.

After running my B570 (1068) with an extended display, the unit went into hibernation. On wake-up the laptop screen is indecipherable garbage. The second display will run to show BIOS startup but then reverts to the built-in screen - which is illegible. Toggling the F3 key does not get a good screen.
I read another post suggesting this is a hardware failure. What parts have failed?

I just picked up a Z laptop. Got the docking station the VGP-PRZ1. The dock has a vga and DVI connector. When I connect two monitors to the dock the software will only allow me to turn one on. I get an error "this gpu only supports a single display"
Does that mean I can not use 2 external monitors?

I just ordered a new Dell XPS M1330 with the Intel X3100 chipset and then I saw this:

My question: Does it matter what graphics chipset I have? Can I run 2 external monitors with the Intel chipset? If so, that would be very cool!

Does the Latitude E7240 can support two external displays without a dock? Can have one plugged in to the mini displayport and one in to HDMI and output just to these displays?
Or is it limited to just the laptop display and one single external display?

i recently bought a vantex nexstar 3 external hard drive with the option of usb and e-sata. The problem i am having is with e-sata. The e-sata is the prefered method of exchanging information dur to its speed rather than usb.
I would like to know from the community in large if there is anyone who has experienced these problems or has connected an external to their m4400 laptop.
The external laptop has a seagate 7200 rpm FFS(free fall sensor) inside.
The problems:
1) When connecting the exHD to the laptop for the first time the HD spins (i can feel it) but then stops. Windows does not pick it up as well as Intel Matrix Storage manager. Only when i restart the laptop still with the exHD connect does windows pick it up as well as Intel Matrix Storage manager.
I did in both cases check to see if the exHD needs more power and it is sufficient.
2)Another issue is that i have windows reporting to me that an external hard drive has been connect to my system even though i havn't plugged it in .....

Is it possible to use two external monitors with my T440p (20AW-A08500) with Intel HD Graphics withou having to buy a dock? I normally use my laptop at home with the lid shut and two monitors attached.
I used to have X1 (still do - now up for sale) and that was happily connected to two monitors via HDMI and via a MiniDP to DVI adaptor.I wrongly assume when I bought the T440p that I would be able to somehow power my existing two monitors from the single MiniDP port.I have seen their is a Lenovo DisplayPort to DualDisplayPort adaptor - but this talks about ThinkCentre usage - no mention of Thinkpads. Plus the price of this adaptor is pretty steep.

I have Thinkpad Edge E330 bought this July, with win8 downgraded to win7. It recently started a problem where the laptop's own display doesn't display anything (just blank) if I don't have external display connected. The external display doesn't have be in use, just connected, and E330's own display works fine. If I disconnect the external display, the E330's own display goes blank also. It doesn't matter what display setting I have.Currently I'm not able to use my E330 as a laptop at all.

The monitor on my HP Pavilion dv9830us laptop has not been working for some time and I have had to use an external CRT monitor for my display. A couple nights ago, my operating system (Ubuntu Linux 10.04) failed to load and because I can't get video feed to my external monitor until the video drivers on Ubuntu loads, I am unable to run Ubuntu's repair feature and the beginning of boot.
Is there a way I can get my laptop to use my external monitor at all times, even at the BIOS screen? Is there a setting in BIOS for this?

I've had Windows 7x64 running on my E6400 (w 160m) for 4 months now and frequently use an external monitor (Dell E207FP widescreen 1680x1050).
Up until a few days ago, I could plug the monitor in and it would correctly and automatically scale my desktop to the native 1680x1050 resolution.
All of a sudden (with no driver updates on my part) I can no longer scale any output to this resolution via VGA cable.
I examined the device manager and found that the video driver date was not the Oct09 driver I had expected, but instead something from Jun09. Updated the driver to the most recent dated Dec-14-09 and I am still having the same scaling issue.

What are the settings to allow the laptop screen to be closed and still be able to get video to an external display.

Just a few weeks ago, I received a new DELL E6400 with Intel Graphics Card.
Since day 1, I started to notice a strange behavior when I connect an external monitor to the VGA port of my laptop. No matter the resolution, the monitor shows horizontal and vertical blurry lines just like if it was a refresh rate issue.
I reported the issue to Dell, and they replaced my monitor, but the lines are still there...I checked the refresh rate and updated the video card drivers with no luck...
Have any of you experienced something like this?
I'm not using a docking station and I'm running windows XP with extended desktop...

I have a T420 that I'm using with a Mini Dock Series 3 - 90W 433710U docking station. I'm trying to connect to two external monitors (both HP 1965's) using the DVI and VGA outputs on the docking station. From the VGA output, I'm running a VGA (M) to DVI (M) into my monitor. I can only get either the DVI or VGA outputted monitors to work by themselves, but not together. When I connect both external displays, it will switch off one of the external monitors (the first one connected). Both are verified working as external monitors with the T420, just not at the same time. When using the DVI output, I can get dual monitors to work using the ThinkPad display as one monitor and the DVI-connected external monitor as the second. Is there a way to connect to two external monitors from a T420 with a Mini Dock Series 3 - 90W 433710U docking station? Or do you a multi-monitor adapater, such as an Cirago HDX3DV01 to do that?
