Dell :: E6400 Docking/undocking Problems : BSD Or Freezes
Feb 9, 2010
I have a Dell E6400, Windows XP Sp3. I updated bios, reinstalled the latest drivers, everything is newest.
The laptop works perfectly undocked and docked. Whenever I undock the laptop the mouse and keyboard stops working or I get the bluescreen saying Multiple IRL Complete Requested.
This looks like a driver issue. There is no bluetooth nor nothing in the startup.

We have a user whose Latitude E7240 shuts down every time she tries to dock or undock her laptop. We have replaced the motherboard and both docks that she uses. The problem disappeared after she worked, undocked, several days from home. She returned to work and was able to dock/ undock with no issues. I have another motherboard, and can replace again, but not sure that the motherboard is the issue.

I have a wireless mouse and printer plugged into the USB ports of my docking station and generally have no issues with them functioning. However, when I take my laptop off the docking station and then return it to the docking station, the laptop no longer recognizes the keyboard and also says that the printer is not connected. Once I restart they both work. I have also tried to unplug the wireless receiver for my keyboard from the docking station and plug into the laptop, but it still does not work without reboot.

Dell has sent me 3 E6400 computers and all of them fail when using the docking station and then the BUILT IN Verizon card. I have more than 50 hours with technical support.
Finally they put me with their top tier support. You will not believe their answer! I would never belive it if it wasn't in writing so I am going to copy it here for you .....

don't know if others had this same problem already. I've disabled sleep and hibernate and such and only set the display to turn off after 10 min. Pretty much every time the laptop is frozen when i start using it again.
Sometimes it takes a while and it's usable again but mostly it just stays that way and i have to do a hard reboot

My Dell Latitude E6400 laptop reboots when inserted in the docking station. I can run all day and say I hot dock it out of the docking station and go away for half an hour. While away I use the laptop. When I return I snap the laptop back onto the station and.... it reboots! It started about a week ago. Always worked before. The peripherals are two displays, ext kybd, mouse. No USB stuff. Ethernet connected in the dock. This setup is unchanged for months now. Docking contacts clean. Under laptop too.
BIOS is most recent (did a few months ago). I reset defaults in the BIOS today after looking for any setting that may change this issue, but no improvement. Device Manager has nothing relevant either. What's wrong? The hard reboot is really bad as I lose all my in progress work and get all these Auto Recover files to manage... and logins... and restart apps... I'm not interested in putting the computer to sleep between transitions, as it has always been working flawless up to last week.

I have an XPS M1530 running Vista Home Premium 64-bit, T-9300 Processor, 6 gig RAM, 320 gig 7200-rpm harddrive. I am using it with the Kensington SD100S Laptop Docking Station (with stand) and a 22" Samsung monitor (monitor as primary display and laptop display as secondary display) and the Dell Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. The Kensignton docking station attaches to the M1530 via USB.
My question is, is it safe for me to detach the docking station when the M1530 is booted up and running? What about detaching the monitor? Except when I have an external USB harddrive turned on, there is not anything in my tray icons to indicate (as far as I can tell) that any hardware needs to be safely removed.
I have a 2nd AC adapter in my den separate from my home office, but I so rarely take the laptop mobile in the house since I power down first. Please let me know whether I am being too cautious, and if it is safe to detach the docking station and monitor while running any precautions that I should take. I do have my XPS backed up via Ghost if a problem should happen.

I am using a Precision m4500 and a ePort Plus replicator on windows 7even 64bits.
On my previous one (m6300), the "eject computer" option was available on windows but I don't find it on my current machine.
Does it mean that I have to shutdown the pc to undock it or is it safe to make a hot undock just by manually removing the laptop from the replicator ?

I have a brand new (month old) Precision M6800, I generally use it docked on my desk at work attached to two monitors via the docking station (I have confirmed via dell support that it is the correct model of dock). The laptop works fine attached to the dock, and fine on its own undocked.
However during the act of undocking (especially if the screen is locked, although this could be a coincidence) the laptop screen will often be left black. The laptop is still running, programs are still open etc. RDPing into the laptop shows all the programs still open and windows functioning fine. Plugging a monitor into one of the external ports will often solve the problem and bring the screen to life.
I have checked the bios version (it's a new model there has been no release) and the GPU drivers.

I'm looking for a laptop that has a port that allows it to connect to a docking station that will actually provide power to it.
I see a lot of them have docking stations available that connect via USB, but you still need to connect a separate power supply to the laptop. Ideally,
I'd love to have one that connects to the docking station by "sitting" in it... i.e., rather than plugging a cable into the "special" port on the laptop, the port is underneath or even just in the back of the laptop in such a way that it connects to the dock by simply resting the laptop up against it.

I just ordered a docking station from ebay. Everything looks good and works fine except when I plug in my power cord to the dock it the computer says the adapter doesnt supply sufficient power to charge the laptop and requests that I plug in a 90W adapter.
The thing is I'm using the 130W adapter that came with my laptop. If it makes any difference my adapter is a PA-4E model and the dock is the E-Port Plus Replicator

I tend to take my laptop around a lot and I get kind of annoyed at having to constantly hook up all the various USB cables and the monitor it interfaces with.
Docking stations seem ideal for convenience, but they seem awfully expensive.
Are there any affordable docks or USB hubs out there? Like less than 30-40 dollars?

Or, more to the point, since I have only one VGA out from the laptop itself, would DVI be of any benefit at all?
Would dual DVI mean that each external monitor would run better?
If not, I'll just get the cheaper docking station. For my desktop, which the E4300 is replacing,
I have had one VGA and one DVI, and it is OK, but I like things the same if possible.

My laptop's fan WILL NOT turn off. Its spinning at blow dryer speeds all the time.
Initially I thought I had a lemon with some heat issues, so I returned it and DELL sent me a new one. I received it today and it has the same problem as the one before.
Apparently this laptop runs super hot when in the docking station-the reason being, I have no clue.
im worried that the internals are going to overheat cuz this fan is blowing out really hot air.
When I use it on the go or anywhere outside of the docking station-no fan problems.
Would hate to lose my docking station/external monitor...

My daughter's D610 slowly died during a 10 week car holiday trip in Northen Australia. From the description of how it gradually happened I assumed it could be bad power connection and eventually the battery failed.
Completely dismantled very carefully and tested the power connector, whilst not perfect I believe the solder joints were acceptable.
When power supplies PA10 or PA12 plugged in directly to the laptop no lights of any kind, with or without battery. Checked with other battery too, same result. The power supplies do deliver right voltage and good under load.
Have a docking station and partly to my surprise with the 95W or PA10 power supply the D610 works fine. With the PA12 or 65W power supply the docking station refuses to work telling you to shut down and replace the power supply.
Ran into a problem when I tried to test with the car power converter, which delievered enough power but was not recognised so docking station again refused. The second D610 I later had to hand allowed the car power to be used but under "protest", warning that performance might be poor. Eventually I got the PA10 which was accepted.
I have a second D610 which works fine on all 3 power supplies. Now having option for swopping parts, I would like to know what I can try to figure out what is causing the power interruption?

I have tried looking at Dell's webpage, but couldn't find any lists over compatible docking stations. Not to mention that when trying to "buy" another identical computer dockings are never mentioned in the "Buy accessories for your Dell" subpage. I have seen a few cheap, used docking stations on the web, but I don't know if they will work. This is the one I can get really cheap:
Would that work on my Preceision M6500? It's for my second and third office (a.k.a. my wife's pet shop and our cabin by the sea), so I need two dockings. And this way I can save 80 % of the cost!
For some stupid reason the M6500 has no SPDIF output, and I see that there is one on this docking. But I don't care if that works or not, I only use SPDIF at home, and I have an USB sound card with SPDIF there.

I have a Dell d820, docking station, and monitor stand. I am running Vista ultimate.
My problems are two-fold:Hot docking does not work. If I take my laptop out while it's running and open the screen, it is blank, and it never comes back. Pulling it out while asleep results in similar issues. The only reliable way to dock and undock is to shut down completely

I have a Dell Precision M4800, only a few months old. My docking station is a Dell E-Port Plus II, which came with the computer. Very recently, after an update to Dell Command Power Manager, whenever I dock my laptop to the docking station, Dell Command Power Manager will say 'The power adapter attached to your docking station is not recognized', and my system will run slowly. I have a power cord separate from the docking station that, when I plug in, will charge the laptop just fine. I am using Windows 7. What should I do? Is it the Dell Command Power Manager's failure?

We have an unusual problem with a Dell Latitude E5520. It has been built with Windows 7 32bit SP1 and McAfee EndPoint Encryption, as we do with all of our laptops.
When the laptop is powered on and then docked, everything works fine. If you then give the laptop a restart whilst docked, it just doesn't! It shuts down and stays in some kind of power save mode. I have been through all of the Power options, including closing of the lid and turned off everything that could be causing this to happen, but still nothing.
If the power button is pressed whilst docked, the light comes on but that's it, no activity. Undock it, power up, close the lid and dock it again, all of the external screen, keyboard and mouse work as you would expect. I believe all of the drivers are up to date (it is a new laptop).
The docking station is an E-Port Plus DP/N: FFCV6 A00

I'm running a D820 and I just installed Vista 64 Ultimate. I ran the entire install while disconnected from the dock and everything went smooth (SP1 and all patches afterwards).
After connecting the laptop to the dock I'm getting a very annoying latency with my mouse and keyboard. The mouse stops responding for as little as half a second, up to 4 or 5 seconds depending on what
I'm doing. While typing, the keyboard will also repeat the last key I touched when the issue occurs

My Latitude e7240 when docked onto the PR03X docking station, the power adapter that is plugged into the PR03X completely goes dead. The only way I can reset the power is by unplugging and replugging the AC adapter FROM THE WALL. Tried the spacer. Tried double powering (1 adapter into the PR03X and another adapter into the e7240). Also tried plugging the laptop on first without power, and when powering up the laptop, it would boot up 10x slower than normal and sometimes hang. Also tried multiple other PR03X just to be sure the one i have is not faulty. The same problem is repeatable. The laptop has the latest BIOS.
It seems there is a power mismatch of some sort that would cause a) the adapter to fail, and then b) for the laptop to run extremely slow because of what?Is the problem caused by a faulty docking port on the e7240? I assume the PR03X is compatible to the e7240??
