Dell :: E6500 Or Lenovo W500

I am looking around for a replacement for my 4 year old Precision M70. It has it is well-built, has a fantastic keyboard, lovely 15.4" WUXGA screen, and strong (for then) but power-hungry gpu. The obvious replacement would be the Precision M4400, but in Australia the WUXGA screen is only available on the lower-gpu'd version the Latitude E6500. I don't really need an awesome gpu anymore, but do want a quiet machine, a great keyboard, good build and WUXGA. I have read so many unfavourable reviews of the E6500 that I am now considering the Lenovo W500. Can anyone comment or help me choose between the E6500 and the W500?

Well I was trying to buy the M4400 a few days back and the call dropped with the rep and she never called me back. So this gave me time to take a look at the W500 again and I was pleased to find that they had the P9500 offered, so now I am having difficulty deciding which to get.
I will be using the laptop for a lot of CAD work. I do finite element analysis, CAM programming, and part design using CATIA v5r17. I also use MATLAB and Simulink. So CPU, memory, and videocard performance are quite important to me. However I also travel around a lot and I would be bringing this laptop around from the office to the machine shop several times a day, so it needs to be rugged.
What I like about the W500 is that it has the switchable graphics so that it will run cooler and save battery life when graphics power is not an issue. I also like the fact that it has the lower power consumption and higher performance DDR3 memory. Finally, I like that it can be configured with the low power P9500 processor (2.53Ghz, 1066Mhz FSB, 6MB L2, 25W).....................

I've got thinkpad W500 and the PrtSc  key is not capturing screen I want to copy.  It doesn't require the Fn key because it's labeled on top row ("sysrq" is below it on 2nd row on same button key). Â
-I also tried pressing Fn + prtsc just to see if that would work. Â Didn't work.
-Then I tried pressing Alt + prtsc... nothing.
-I even tried pressing Ctrl + PrtSc.... nothing.

I've looked all over Forum, no one addresses this, or at least not for the W500 (which is different from the other W510 through W540 series laptops. Or other ways to capture a screenshot?

I have a W500, ATI Mobility FireGL V5700, Windows 7.

When I press FN+Home and FN+END to regulate brightness up or down, the brightness symbols turn on and goes up/down, but the screen brightness is not regulated up or down but stays constant somewhere in between.

What can I do to get "brighness" working?

It has never worked, the computer is 2 months old. I have upgraded from Windows 7, 32 bit to 64, but brightness is still not working.

I have a thinkpad W500 and I'm reinstalling Windows 7 after years of running linux (I got tired of my video drivers being unsupported due to the age of the card). Â However, when I attempt to install system update, I get the message "an error occured while gathering user information" and I cannot continue. Â How can I get the switchable graphics, power, and keyboard drivers properly installed? Â I don't really care about the rest of the software, it just that system update is the only way I know of to get it.

In fact, my W500 is over 5 years old but I do not have any complaints on its performance except the WUXGA display is rather dim which makes it hardly useable on open-air. I do not recall that problem at purchase time. When googling around I see different reasons for a dim display

a) cabling - would not consider this beacuase the screen is not flickering and does not show any discrepancies - it's just dim
b) inverter - this is not a real inverter, is it?
c) display panel - it does not seem very difficult to replace
d) motherboard - I am unsure whether I would challenge a replacement

Is there a way to find out which way to start working around? I mean buying a panel if it comes out at the end that I had needed a new motherboard would rather make me blue.Â

Or should I accept the fact that time has gone and I have to look for an other computer because it does not worth bothering. What do you think?

I have Thinkpad W500, Windows 7 Professional, 64bit. Â When I turn on laptop, i forget when (before or after Windows loading) it brings me to the FingerPrint icon. Â This part is ok because the laptop seems to continue booting without my clicking it which I prefer. (I don't even have my own FingerPrint saved in laptop and I find that strange. I bought this W500 used). Â After FingerPrint icon disappears, the User or Admin Icon is shown on screen. Â That picture needs to be clicked for laptop to continue booting up or loading up. No password required, just click the icon. Â I'd like for laptop to just bootup without doing anything, and go to the desktop page automatically (like all my other thinkpads).

How can I turn off that second Icon or feature? Â Is it a User or Admin icon? Â I'm only user of laptop so I don't need feature to use a password or to click the Icon.

I have a W500 running Windows 7 which unexpectedly turns off, usually when asleep but sometimes also while on. The turn off happens as if the power is lost (say, the battery/AC cord are yanked out). After a turn off like that, I sometimes need to reconnect the battery and the AC cord. Did some reading here and elsewhere on the web and came upon the electrostatic suggestion. Was able to get it to turn back on at least a few times by touching the underside of the laptop, but that worked inconsistently.

Since it mostly happens when the unit is asleep, I pretty much ruled out the temperature and software issues.

Decided to check out the memory section pin bending solution. My laptop has to have it's palm rest taken off to access the RAM modules. People kept referring to some RAM door pins but since mine doesn't have a special RAM door, I bent some pins on the bottom of the palm rest and so far, not power loss but too early to tell.

I intend to use it primarily for some fairly intensive gaming (Fallout 3, etc), media (music, movies), and general work stuff (web surfing, word processing, etc)
I have had an IBM for the last four years and it has served me quite well. My experience with IBM tech support was always good, and the one time I had to get it fixed it was returned promptly, no questions asked.
However there is an HP ProBook that looks quite appealing.
It costs $1865
It ships with Windows XP (important to me)
It has a 2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo Processor
It has a 512 MB ATI video card
3GB of DDR2 Ram
It has a 320 GB 5400rpm HD
It has a 17.3" widescreen 1600x900 display
And here's the kicker: a Blu-Ray drive
The Lenovo is a Thinkpad W500. It is generally quite similar in specs, and a bit cheaper, but it has a 15.4 inch screen (albiet a higher resolution one) and lacks the Blu-Ray drive..............

Got a new E6500 last week, and I love it! I got the audio crackling to go away, though there are minor latency spikes every couple minutes,
that however don't affect the audio/video. The screen is wonderful, the keyboard, everything.
But one thing that bugs me is that when the fan starts going it will never stop. According to HWMonitor, my processor (P8800) can be at 29-30 deg C (right above ambient!) and the Nvidia card at 43 deg C and it won't stop! It's extremely annoying

I managed to buy a E6500 through a special promo at my university. Although I wanted an integrated graphic card (I'm not going to do *any* gaming so the nvidea cards are completely useless for me, right?), the promotion was limited to the nvidia 160.
Now what do I see upon receipt, they screwed up at dell: they delivered a notebook with the intel graphic card and no bluetooth. I've noticed them and they'll replace the notebook. Now I was thinking if I would be able to make a deal with Dell: send me the BT card that I'll install myself and some compensation for the missing graphic card (which I actually didn't want anyway).
Would I be able to pull off something like that, and what 'compensation' would you try to get (I already have max RAM, extra 6 cell battery, mouse, ...)

I'm planning on getting an E6500 with the 64GB SSD (performance option - I assume this is the Samsung SLC version).
It's my understanding that SSD's run a lot hotter ( since they are solid state chips) than a corresponding conventional HDD.
I would also think that they would consume less power than the conventional HDD, but what about the additional heat causing the fan to come on more often and/or at higher speeds? Would this negate the power savings?
Any comments would be appreciated. Also, FWIW I will be sticking with the Intel 4500MHD integrated graphics.

I recently purchased a Latitude E6500 with fingerprint reader. I was so impressed with the Studio15 that I had. Here is the problem the software with the E6500 doesn't let you login on websites or programs, like the Studio did.
When contacted Dell they stated that it will only work with Vista. My E6500
came preloaded with XP Pro. So I bit the bullet and downgraded to Vista.
Guess what still no use except to log into windows. Wave software SUCKS!
Does any one know of software that will work in XP with the Latitude?
Digitalpersona does not have a XP version yet. Yet on my Studio I converted to XP and it worked. Anyone have a link to the fingerprint software on the Studio?

I just play a few games here and there and I am seeing my system slow WAY down when even just doing light gaming. Is anyone else having these issues? I have the NVS 160 and the T9600 and even playing games like Command and Conquer Generals Zero hour which is a game that is several years old, I have to play it at 1024*768 with details turn down to min just to get the game not to spit and get jumpy. Its like it freezes every 2 seconds for a half sec or so..
I have speedfan monitoring temps for CPU and GPU and both are well within normal ranges, infact the fan is not even turning much past 4000 RPM and GPU getting no hotter then 64C at MAX..
Any ideas or experiences would be greatly appreciated. I just feel that the NVS 160 should be able to play a 3 year old game MUCH better then it is...

I have recenltly bought a e6500 everything was fine till I tried to install windows vista 32 bit again . The boardcom USH w/touch sensor was not installed in my former OS and I didn't have boardcom TMP neither .
But my fingerprint worked fine .
Then I reinstalled the windows and installed the latest drivers in order . I also updated the firmware but none of those helped me solve this problem .
When I try to enroll my finger print I get : "Device opened" and when I choose my thumb as an enrolling finger I get "an error occurred during enrollment please re-enroll"
Is there any thing that I can do ?

I've been wavering back and forth between the T500 & E6500 for the past few weeks, but been pretty satisfied with our past Dell fleet and their service.
Up to Monday I was pretty much set on the E6500's, but I'm starting to see more and more threads about troublesome issues on the E-series. Things that would certainly bother me and my team.
Maybe we can keep track of all the issues and hopefully resolutions to them on this thread.

I just got my dell Outlet e6500 today and I have a few questions/issues that you may be able to help me with:
1) when I opened it up, there's a small piece of plastic broken off the right side of the laptop (the piece is actually in the plastic bag that the laptop was in, so I assume it broke in shipping?).
If you look at the picture to which I've linked below from the review on this site (not actually my own picture),
it's the piece just to the immediate left of the wireless switch, along the bottom of the side, about 1 inch long (some kind of bay or card reader).....

I am in the process of ordering a new e6500. I have been reading through the forum for the last week and I came to the following configuration but would like to clarify a couple of questions.
Just an idea of what laptops I have, I am using Latitude D610, Latitude D620, Thinkpad T60. This might give you an idea of what I am used to. I find T60 is the best overall, D620 very mobile but slow, D610 ok and stable.

I saw that the contrast ratio of the E6500 screen is something like 650 as is the Studio 15 's 1440x900 screen.
Is there a general consensus that these are superior to the 14.1" LED screens? I am led to believe that the T400 and E6400 are using the same Samsung/LG LED screens. I have seen the T400 and sent it right back b/c I got a Samsung screen that looked like milk. It was bad.
Is there a lottery to the Studio 15 and E6500 or will any LG or Samsung or AUO or Chi-Mei panel do? Are you guys pretty much happy with these screens? The notebook check or notebook journal numerical evaluation would put these screens on par with macbook pro, at half the price.

The E6500 I'm using has the P9500 (2.53 ghz, 6mb cache), Nvidia 160M, 2gb RAM, and 80gb 7200RPM HD. When I try to play a 1080P trailer from Apple's site, the thing doesn't seem like it can handle it. It's not smooth at all. I let it DL all the way too, so it's not a buffering issue or anything.
I was planning to use this on a 1920x1200 display, but if it can't even play the 1080p trailer properly...

Well I'm pretty much sold on either the e6400 or e6500 as a basic CAD electrical engineering laptop for college.
After reading a lot of reviews about weight, battery life, heat and screens. I wanted get some opinions.
I am for sure getting the quadro 160m for rendering and probably the p8600 since it's plenty fast and will consume less battery life and produce less heat.
I'm not sure whether to get the 14 or 15" model because of the size and heat and battery life.

I have a Lattitude E6500 with an intel 5300 (AGN) wireless card which has 'N' connectivity. I also have a netgear DG834N which is also draft 'N'.
Both should work on N out of the box, but for some reason I only ever seem to have 54mps connection from the connection manager popup bubble

Since my good old 15" notebook (from summer 2003) died in the beginning of the year, I was looking for a replacement and soon came across the E-series leak. I was immediately impressed by the sleek look and the nice set of features, but I couldn't decide on a certain configuration until now. The result was spending almost 9 months with my old Pentium 3 desktop and its 17" CRT - not exactly the finest web experience you can imagine. This desktop will soon be replaced by a budget gaming system, but I'm sure it will still play a secondary role. Became too accustomed to solely using a notebook, I guess
I should first introduce myself a little bit and talk about what I'll do with this machine. I've just finished school and I'm beginning to study Computer Science at a nearby university this week - staying at home and commuting every day with the notebook in my backpack. Its main purpose will be nothing special, the usual word processing and internet stuff, but also coding and anything else I'll do for university. I still have to try out if it's necessary to take notes on it during part of the lectures, but I think the battery life of the 6-cell should be sufficient. If not, I might just buy a second 6-cell, which doesn't cost much more than upgrading to the 9-cell battery and is more flexible in my opinion.
Here are the parts I've almost decided on, while I'm free for your suggestions:
- P8400 processor
- Vista Business (unsure if I should get Home Basic, it will be secondary besides Linux anyway)
- 2 GB of RAM
- Intel X4500 graphics (keeps cool, saves power, and runs fine with Linux)
- WXGA+ LED display with webcam (WSXGA+ would have pushed me towards 15,4")
- DVD burner (don't need it much, but still hope the firmware issues get sorted out)
- Intel Wifi Link 5100 (good Linux support in the future, but won't pay EUR 45 more for the 5300)
- Bluetooth (standard except for the absolute budget class, isn't it?)
- Backlit keyboard (pure gimmick, but might be nice for those nightly sessions )
- NO fingerprint reader
- 6-cell battery
- 3 years NBD service and nothing else

I have an E6500 with a T9400 CPU (Core 2 Duo, 2.53 GHz, 1066MHz FSB).
I would like to upgrade it to a CPU that is either a quad core or dual core with hyper-threading. The only CPU I can see that is even a possibility is the QX9300 (Core 2 Extreme, 2.53 GHz, 1066MHz FSB)..
The CPU I have is listed by Intel as supporting BGA479 and PGA478 sockets. But, I don't know which my motherboard has...
The QX9300 is only listed to support PGA478 sockets.
Reading on here, it seems like even if I am able to upgrade, I might be opening myself up to heat problems... ..
OTOH, I also read that the the E6500 is identical to the M4400 except for the lid. And the M4400 is available with the QX9300 CPU...
So, can anybody tell me if I can replace my CPU with the QX9300? If so, would it require anything more than just buying the new CPU?..

From what I've read, it *should* work, but the computer does not recognize a 32GB SDHC card that reads fine on other computers and my PDA.
I've installed the latest driver available from Dell and the XP hotfix, restarted the computer, but whenever I try, I get a "device cannot start" error in the device manager.
A regular 2GB SD card reads fine.
