So Dell sent me a 1647 as a replacement for a faulty 1640 but they didnt install the bluray drive like my 1640 had, and now they said that they are not going to !
My 1640 has a slot load bluray drive in it and I want to swap them myself, how hard is this?
Did a clean install of Win7 Pro the day after I received my 1647 (see specs in signature). Updated the BIOS to A04 and received my replacement 130w adapter via courier yesterday.
Migrated my data from my old daily use machine and started to use the XPS1647 as my new daily use late last week. I immediately noticed that the hard drive tends to "click" (for lack of better terminology) on a regular basis. It almost sounds like the drive head is constantly parking and un-parking.
Note: I am pretty sure it is the hard drive causing the noise. Front left hand side next to the track pad is where the noise seems to be originating.
I have the power settings set to never turn off the hard drive when plugged in (this was my initial suspicion of what was causing the noise).
I am thinking of calling Support and just having a tech come and have a look at it. The problem is the noise seems to come and go as it pleases (ie I can't reproduce the issue at will). Of course if and when the tech comes to have a look at it and the noise isn't being produced they will just tell me I am nuts.
Are any other XPS1647 owners hearing the same thing I am? If this is indeed the Hard Drive I am a little concerned as it seems flaky already...

I have been getting a random blue screen popping up every once and a while, that will "dump my physical memory" or something and then reboot itself after like 30 seconds. my hard drive was the reason for these constant errors. So I backed everything up, in preparation of a real crash. I am in the process of ordering a new hard drive from Newegg.com, and I would like to know if it is hard to replace a hard drive in a notebook, or if I should have Geek Squad do it for $50. Also, I dont think I have the Operating system disc that came with my computer, so how do I order that from HP and how much is it?And last but not least, Is there a post or video with instructions on how to install a hard drive and the operating system?
It says that the updater isnt compatible with 64bit versions, despite being listed under windows 7 64bit. So when I click on "flash" it doesnt work, i just get error
View 4 Replies View RelatedThe notebook is about 5 yrs old and has the original 20Gb HD which I wanted to upgrade to a 120. The operating system is XP and the computer runs fine; it just needs more HD space. I purchased a new WD HD which will not install. When I put the new drive in (with XP install disk in CD drive) the system will hang for about five minutes before finally getting to the setup routine. The setup sees the new HD and prompts to format it and I did. Once the format is done and it reboots, I get a BIOS message saying "fixed disk failure." At this point, it will not proceed to install windows. I've also tried booting from a floppy. Basically, the machine will not boot from a floppy with the new HD installed. If I remove the HD entirely, the machine will boot from a floppy and it will also boot correctly from the XP setup disk. It will also boot from a floppy with the old hard drive installed and it also boots from the CD with the old hard drive installed. I have sent the drive back to the seller and they tested it and said they could find nothing wrong. I tried installing the new HD about a half dozen times and it behaved the same way each time. I just went through this proceedure with another computer (replace old HD with brand new one), so I know how it is supposed to work. There is nothing I can configure in BIOS as far as the HD is concerned, and I have not been able to find anything that would indicate that I need to update my BIOS. My basic question is; why will the computer work with the old HD, but not a new one if there is nothing wrong with the new HD?

View 10 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to help my roommate out on this one and I think that the issue is hard drive is corrupt, but I'm not sure. A few days ago, he told me that Vista has been taking ages to start up.
I tried looking at to see what was going on and we couldn't even get passed the welcome screen. At this time, there were no errors showing up before the Welcome screen loaded. I got the Dell Vista reinstall disc and attempted to repair the files. Doing that didn't do anything. Therefore, I figured that his only option was to reformat.
I followed that guide that's stickied which shows you how to install the mediadirect and vista to each of there own partitions. After doing deleting the partitions and installing mediadirect to its own partition, I proceeded to installing Windows Vista.
Vista then finished installing and restarted automatically as it normally does. After restarting and going passed the first black screen (here you can hit F12 to get to bios), I get an error that reads .....
I recently got a Sony Vaio Sr-210J/H through some private deal...but when I got it I noticed that I got scammed and the laptop didn't have a Hard Drive . So, I buy a 250 Gb Hard Drive, I open the hard drive slot, and i notice that I don't have anywhere to connect the hard drive to. I finally found this thread: Guide to : Upgrading Sony SR HDD & Ram which helped a lot and confirmed that i wasn't crazy. I'm missing the metal part and whatever connects the HDD to the motherboard. Does anyone have any idea where I could get the parts, or what to do?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI had a problem with my old windows vista, and cannot restart windows. I put in a brand new 500hd. The windows 7 goes through the whole install procedure, but the last step "completing installation", it does not complete, but locks up. I have tried several times, and even removed the cd before the final restart, to have it search the HD for start-up soft ware, as I have read, but nothing works.

I went to install Win 8 back on it from a CD I have, it go's all the way thru the steps up to where you you pick a Drive to install on, and a messege appears saying; No Hard Drive detected- install Mass Storage Driver for detection of Hard Drive. I am probably getting the sxps 1640 and I was wondering would a bluray drive be worth it? I do have a Sony 40v4100 lcd tv. Can this drive output 24p through the hdmi port? And why isnt it a bluray burner like the xps m1530 line? How hard would it be to swap in a bluray drive, do you have to pull the whole computer apart to do so? Should I just spend the money on an external bluray player for my tv?

I have to send back my studio XPS 1645 the thing is I have a Bluray drive in the system but the original configuration is a DVD slot load drive.

Do you notice that when playing the game there is a lot of crazy distortion sounds and popping noises? Never truly the same or in the same place.
I had this problem with my 1640 and my new 1645.
1640 was P8800, Ati 3670 and similar features as listed in my new configuration.
Bios updates don't seem to have resolved this issue, neither has different laptops. Only thing left is to check if this is specific to my copy of transformers.
I've not really checked to see if this is replicated via other titles but thats next on my list of things to figure out if this thread doesn't garner any useful results.
All of a sudden my bluray drive is missing from my computer and every other programs. What is the problem and how can i fix it? I can open the tray n put a dvd inside. It even spins but nothing comes in screen.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have had this laptop for just about a week and a half, and although last week it played "The Dark Knight" BluRay disc, it will not play any bluray at this point in time.
The Acer Arcade Deluxe program is apparently supposed to do that function, but it will not. I have updated the software for AAD a couple of times. I have tried reinstalling it, I have tried checking the driver for the multi-drive. All to no avail!
Right now the Device Manager calls the optical drive a CD-Rom. I do not know if it was a Windowes update that screwed things up, or what, but what is the point of buying a laptop with a blu-ray drive, when 10 days later it won't play a blu-ray disc?
I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 15 that came with the partitioned data recovery feature. I immediately created 2 recovery disks. Yesterday, I sectioned my active hard drive so that I could have, in effect, 2 hard drives. The newly partitionedsection of the hard drive is naturally blank and I would like to install my data recovery or disk recovery information on it.

I've been looking at the new timeline series notebooks for a while and got really excited when newegg put up this model for $799! Anyways, I plan on getting an external drive and was just wondering if the SU9400 with Intel GMA 4500MHD could support playing a bluray disk on an external drive? From what I'm gathering through the numerous posts about these models, it appears that the SU9400 should playback 1080P off various websites but I couldn't find any info about a bluray player.
If so any suggestions on a compact inexpensive external bluray drive?
Using my inspiron 2330 (only 18mths old ) as normal next thing it tells me it encountered fault and has to reboot anyway it keeps saying scanning and repairing drive (c) then does not allow me to log in so i manage to get into bios to do a scan and it guves me a error code of 2000-0142 validation code of 112406 and and then says harddrive 0-s/n wd-wmc152946178

Something recently happened to my laptop, and now whenever I boot up my laptop, I get a message stating that "No drive detected", and I don't know if the hard drive might be damaged or not.
I tried connecting the hard drive directly to a desktop pc since it's a sata hard drive, but my desktop pc just froze on the boot screen whenever this hard drive was connected.
I also was going to try and use a hard drive external case to maybe connect it to the pc this way, but I wasn't sure if it would work
I'm thinking of removing my DVD drive and replacing it with a caddy and hard drive as explained here.
I don't use the DVD drive very often and would much prefer a 500GB or 1TB hard drive in there. The DVD drive can then be used externally via the eSATA port using this cable.
The ideal solution would be to use this NewmodeUS caddy as it supports the larger 12.7mm 1TB 2.5" hard drives and has a removable faceplate. The problem is the price.

I hate for this to be my first post, but after looking everywhere on the internet and on this site (I've been lurking a while) I'm still at the same place I started with my Studio 15 laptop. I'll try to include as much detail as possible.
I had my laptop plugged into my LCD tv via an HDMI cable as I often do, and when I went to close the laptop to use just the LCD, the tv flashed, showed a blue screen of death for a quick second and then went black. I opened the laptop and it was still on, but the screen wouldn't go on.
I restarted my computer and from there on out it kept making a beeping noise and stalling for a really long time at the "Dell Studio/progress bar" screen. After leaving it at that screen for a while the clicking stop and then it allowed me to access the Boot Options and Setup. Under setup, when I click on the drive under SATA hard drive, it shows something like 10GB and nothing more, and I have no options on the screen .....
I have a HP 15 Notebook PC with no dvd drive recently I was sent the system recovery cds from HP. I dont have an external dvd drive. What i do have is a Toshiba Satelight laptop with Widows 7 and a good dvd drive. Also I have a 500 GB external hard drive. I was thinking maybe I could copy the disks onto the external harddrive with the Toshiba dvd drive. Then attach the external hard drive to my HP 15 Notebook by usb port and install Hp recovey disks from the external hard drive.

Laptop was working fine with the factory Hitachi HTS541680J9AT00 80gb drive.
I purchased a Samsung HM160HC 160gb drive as it's supposed to be the fastest PATA laptop drive available.
I put it in and the laptop just kept saying "no operating system found" with the XP disk in the drive.
I tried several optical drives and got the same issue with all of them.
I then hooked a USB optical drive up and it wouldn't boot from it.
I removed the internal optical drive and the system then booted from the USB drive and loaded Windows fine.
I just assumed it was a fluke and once Windows was done loading I removed the USB drive, installed the factory internal optical again and turned it on...
"No operating system found".
This is where I'm stuck. If I remove the optical the system boots into Windows fine. There were no issues like this with the other hard drive.
I have tried setting the hard drive as Master, Slave, and Cable Select with no change.
Laptop has the newest BIOS.
Samsung does not offer firmware updates on their hard drives.
who opened I believe Z and connected a hard drive to dvd drive connector while leaving dvd drive in for cosmetic reasons. Can't find this thread. Where exactly can the hard drive go? Inside the tray?
I am afraid there will be too much vibration if I put regular HD there. For this reason I would rather put there SSD but is there a way to make this a primary OS drive? Seems like last bios allows to boot from optical drive.
