Dell :: Info On The No Payments For 12 Months?
Oct 2, 2009
So here is how I have read the Dell terms.
I am looking at getting a Studio 17 or a Studio XPS, both have the 12 month no payments, no interest. I was approved for 4 grand so everything will fit into my budget.
I also noticed, while reading the terms, that anything else purchased while purcahsing a qualifying product, will also be on the no payment/interest for a year.

The main points which I'm pretty happy about are:
Long battery lifeCool and quiet operation of the machineSmall form factorRelatively lightFlawless, bright and crisp displayKeyboard has a good feel to it
One of the major reasons I purchased this machine was because the hardware that came with it was plenty and mature. When I purchased the T400, the hardware was squeaky new but that brought with it tons of issues primarily with compatibility and bugs in the drivers. I'm a Linux user and the I13 worked out of the box with Debian and Ubuntu. The drivers are very stable and the machine is very quick.
This machine is *not* for gamers or heavy duty graphic artists. Its for the average Joes and Janes of the world who like to word process, surf the internet, watch movies and want to use Linux
I do have some gripes about this machine ( nothing is perfect you see ).The display seems to be a little loose. It wobbles while typing on a soft surface. Its not annoying but its something I dislike. It has only 2 USB ports. Dell could've put in atleast 3-4 ports. It would've been nice
Over all, my journey with this machine has been uneventful! Just the way I like it

I've had my XPS 720 desktop since January. It can be a good computer, but I've had too many problems with it and Dell support has been terrible. I've had to literally contact them at least ten, probably a lot more times, for each problem that I've had. Since I'm typing this in an iPhone, I'll just list them.
Two weeks after I got the system it would freeze during the middle of its' boot up and I had to have a mediocre Dell technican fix it.
The system reboots (turns off out of nowhere and instantly powers back up).
The system got the "screech of death" and was repaired ten days afterward.
The technican that came scratched up the system a lot.
Tons of boot up errors before getting into Windows.
Does anybody have any tips on how to get a full refund from Dell? The system has gotten really annoying and there's really no excuse for them not to do something other than another repair and Dell isn't as good as it should be at fixing it. I'll probably focus on each point individually and put up a good arguement, though refunds are really hit and miss. I'll be talking to an agent's manager's manager tomorrow and I really just want a refund at this point.

I bought an XPS 1530 four months ago. I went through 4 hard drives - one would fail, Dell would send a replacement ... that was the cycle. After #4 Hard Drive failed (and a tech came out to try and replace the motherboard & hard drive without success), I finally got them to agree to a "System Exchange"..
They sent me a new XPS 1530 - within 2 days the Hard Drive died! (#5)..
Anyone have any ideas (besides bad luck) of what could cause 5 failed hard drives in two different brand new systems?..
Electrical? I used the laptop at home and at my office. My office is a rented space inside another company's building.
I thought maybe electrical, but I use my old laptop their (Dell Inspiron 6000) and it has been fine. Unless something electrical causes a problem in the XPS only for some specific reason.
I have no idea, but does anyone have any "out of the box" explanations for me?
Dell is sending me a box so I can mail this 2nd laptop in to the Dell Depot for inspection and repair. My faith in the XPS 1530 is zero.
Any ideas or advice?

Got my M6400 in early December.
Now, using RMClock I note that my fully charged capacity of the battery is now only 85% of the designed capacity. (72361mWh out of 86580 mWh)
What does everyone else get?

I have the European Black version with Core i3 and HD graphics called VPCS11X9E.
I ordered the VAIO S as soon as it was released in Denmark, I actually wanted the Z, but it's too expensive for me, I did some changes to my VAIO S to get at least some of the screen quality from the Z to my S (read below):
1. Great build quality, no flex anywhere.
2. It's basically silent during surfing and light office work. The fan will turn on only under stress.
3. Keyboard is excellent. It's actually the best keyboard I have ever used, I love it. Makes me want to write more than I should.
4. Lots of connections, HDMI, VGA, Card Reader, 3 USB, everything I need.
5. Integrated DVD-drive, few 13" actually have this.
6. The screen is by default not very good, but I did 2 things that really helped a lot. First I purchased a Vikuiti ARMR200 screen protector , which turns the VAIO S glossy screen into a matte screen. Second (and even more important), I calibrated the screen using Spyder3 Elite from Datacolor (download my current calibration below). After this, the screen is excellent, the viewing angles are still not that good, but at least the screen is good enough for me to my webwork with proper colors, I would have prefered a little higher resolution, 1440x900 pixels would have been perfect.
7. I also have the matching dockingstation called VGP-PRS10, again great build quality and I really like the idea of not having to plug in all the cables when working from the desk, just note that the HD graphics version that I have, does not support DVI out on the dockingstation, don't ask me why.
8. Btw, after re-installing Windows and doing a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate, the notebook is blazing fast, I have no speed issues at all, amazing.

I recently bought a Sony Bluetooth mouse and on the packaging it says that the provided batteries could last for three months. I'm confused on how this is supposed to be used. Does it mean that it will last three month even if I leave it on and connected all the time? I have my laptop docked and it stays on 24/7. If I leave this mouse connected with the laptop, will it still last three months?
In the mouse settings window of the Control Panel, under Bluetooth, the mouse shows only 85% charge remaining after only 4 days of the type of usage described above!

This laptop seems to be the only one on the dell site that is ~$1000 with a good graphics card and portable (14" or lower).

Just a quick question please. Been wanting to buy a laptop probably with an i5 520 processor.
Seen very good deals on Lenovo, unfortunately came to find out their BIOS is locked, and so with Sony too. Is Dell BIOS locked also, main reason is because I use virtualbox and other related software, and I need VT enabled, will this be an issue with Dell too, as with Lenovo it is (at least as per the threads on the Lenovo side, and no fix yet).
One other thing, talking about Lenovo again or even Acer, I've seen them offer a i5 520 on 14/15" laptops, then why is that I don't have an option to get an i5 520 on a Studio 15.
One last no-brainer question, sorry.. 15.6" screens have a resolution of 1366x768 (16:9) and newer 14" laptops I've seen also have the same resolution, is that also 16:9 and 720p ?

I have been see-sawing between the Sony Z and the E4200 (two very different machines) but being a Dell customer for the past decade, and having access to Premier and EPP, tipped the decision in favor of the the smallest E in the new Dell portfolio.
I thought I would start this thread as a 'catch all' place for all the folks who are ordering the new E4200. I have been looking for info on the E4200 in particular but there isn't much to be found though a few folks have indeed received their E4300s.
There seems to be some disappointment with the E4300. I am holding out until the backlit keyboard as well Latitude ON (hardware-based) are widely available. It does seem that some of the kinks still need to be ironed out from the lilliputian E-class Dells. Here's an early review that pretty much sums up the disappointment that some new owners are feeling:

Is there a big advantage to getting the complete care warrenty over the standard warrenty.
Im not worried that I am going to spill something or drop my laptop so I dont think the complete care is worth it, but I wouldnt mind some feed back from people who have had first hand experience.

Dell has released their solution to the throttling issue, if you have updated to the latest A07 or newer bios, and recieved a 130w adapter from dell. Need to call the reps and get a 130w sent free of charge.
After more testing looks as if the A07 bios has indeed greatly improve the performance of the laptop. More testing will continue to see where the limit is at, as there may be close to the throttling edge perhaps.
Purpose of this thread is to educate those about the throttling issues with dell's laptops. Specifically to the xps 16 with i7 processors. Also to show community driven solutions as we wait for dells response to this issue.
This is an advancement from the power investigation thread, to summarize the thread here is a quick list. The 1645 is supplied and designed for a 90w adapter which is undersized and cripples the laptop under gpu + cpu stresses,
such as gaming and photo editing.Running on battery seems to let the laptop run more towards it potential. The problem severity varies and depends mostly on configuration and type of program being ran.A 130w or bigger power supply will not solve the issue alone, as the bios actively throttles to main 90w anyways.Through reps Dell seems aware of the issue. As of yet there has been no official announcement and is .....

Just wanted to give this info for M1210 owners out there because I found it pretty interesting.
I recently changed my M1210's thermal assembly, new motherboard (due to failed Go7400), and the new one I obtained to replace it was a new revision, A02... the old one I removed is A00, so it seems there have been two design changes to the heatsink since my computer was assembled.
I haven't been able to identify any other differences yet, but one obvious difference is that it uses a different heatpipe .....

Has anyone out there any information on the integrated contactless reader in the E6400/E6500?
I know it's based on the Broadcom 5880 chipset, but not much else. Even Dell can't tell me much, other that it's supposed to support RFID and ISO 14443.
I'm looking at developing a RFID application to which would use the Dell reader if I can find any information.

Just upgradeed from 3GB to 4GB and had a look at the CPU cooler (my lovely SP9400, 25W, 6Mb cache, 45nm, 2.4GHz its on its way from taiwan ).
The existing memory was nanya 2G+1G ddr2-667. I've bought a new Kingston stick, 2GB ddr2-800 and made the swap. The lappy works fine.
Next week (probably friday) I'm gonna post the CPU upgrade process and some tests, before and after, maybe someone will find it interesting.
