I want my Inspiron 14z Ultrabook to have two Operating Systems, Fedora (Linux) and Windows 7. Is it possible to use the SSD drive to accelerate the System's performance on both operating system?
Secondly, Can I still restore my machine to Factory settings???
The hd on my Inspiron 1545 has crashed and subsequently will not boot up. I have purchased a new hd and fitted it.
The recovery disks I have go through the local dell recovery routine but fail on the second disk. I only have the utilities cd from dell no other CDs.
I have windows 7. What I need to restart the laptop?
I have a Dell Inspiron 15z with a 500GB HD and a 32GB mSATA SSD drive. The original setup was using this SSD drive to accelerate. I have since reformatted and reinstalled Windows 8.1 Enterprise on this system. I can not get the Intel Rapid Storage Technologies (Rapid Start, Accelerate, etc.) to work at all. I have gone through the forums here and looked at other places via Google with no luck on all the different things people have done to correct this. My first issue seems to be that the accelerate button is complete missing.
My other issue is that if I attempt to install Intel Rapid Start application, it fails with the error, "This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software.". At one point I was able to get past this error and actually install the software. However, I can not get that to work anymore either. I've also noticed that when I go to Support.dell.com and let it analyze my computer for updates, it always finds the Intel Management Engine Interface driver as an update needed. If I install it manually, or use install feature after the analyze is complete, it still detects it's needed after analyzing again.
I have updated my BIOS to A05(which was the latest available) and have checked my BIOS settings are configured for Intel Rapid Response for the controller, and there is even an option for enabling or disabling Intel Rapid Start technology, which I have turned on and off in attempts to troubleshoot.
I have lost my performance and maintenance system in the control panel, and I would like to know how to retrieve it or replace it for free.
I like to use the sleep and hibernate on my laptop but I need to get the performance.
My dell laptop is dell inspiron 14R with preinstalled windows 8.I want to install ubuntu 10.04 side by side. I switch to legacy boot option too.But could not install it through disk since during partition table creation, it is not showing any os that is preinstalled.Its imp for me to install ubuntu.

I recently purchased a samsung 840 pro 250 gb ssd that i wouold like to make the system drive and make the original drive my data drive. confused on how to do so. want it fresh not clone. all i can find is restore or backup stuff. i just want to put the original computer on the new drive.
View 5 Replies View RelatedLaptop has not been used regularly for quite a while. The system booted up fine and loaded Windows Vista with no problem. Everything seemed to be in working order. Decided to wipe the system, load productivity applications, and give it to my grandson who is starting college. I depressed the F8 key during start up and entered the recovery routine. I selected the "restore to factory settings" option.
The system indicated it was first formatting the drive and then restoring the system. When I restarted the computer I got to the Dell Boot Screen. Displayed on the screen is the Dell logo, "Inspiron 1520 Series", progress bar, and "BIOS Revision A03". The progress bar fills from left to right and restarts the process in a perpetual loop. When I power the system off the on; the first boot cycle seems to take a lot longer for the progress to fill, but after that it loops with the progress bar filling quickly.The system no longer responds to the F8 key being depressed during start-up.
Consequently, I can not repeat the "Restore to factory settings" process. I have tried to boot the system several times with the same results. When I press F12 during and get "boot options" choosing "Internal Hard Drive" or "Onboard NIC" makes no difference. When I run the diagnostics option from the F12 screen; the system displays the heading: "Pre-boot System Assessment Build 4106" and passes all tests.
It appears to me that the recovery to factory settings routine has in some way damaged the system. It had been working fine before the procedure and hangs during boot afterward. How to get the system back into proper operating condition with the factory settings restored.
I'm doing a bit of research - I'm getting an M1730 as a replacement for a dead M1710 (Cheapest DELL XPS M1730 ever???) .. so I can't really change the spec of the machine until I get it .........

Its Toshiba hard drive(320 Gb) crashed 8 months before so I bought new WD hard drive(500 Gb), which also crashed again 2 weeks before(OS drive had bad sectors apperently) . Hence i got it replaced by WD for a new 500Gb hard drive.
Now, when I am trying to install OS in my new hard drive, i am getting following error:

after learning about possible mistakes by reading some forums
1) I checked that hard drive is installed properly, all connections are good.
2) DVD I'm using to install Window 7 is bootable one & i have used it before
3) BIOS settings are checked to boot fromCD/DVD drive. (It is not booting from network adapter which supposed to be reason for ethernet error as per many other forums)
4) I tried draining current by pressing power button for 20 sec to reset settings.(I read in some forum) but even that didn't worked.
BIOS is detecting hard drive...so that is also not issue. Could new hard drive be damaged? should i get this new one also replaced again? I need some way to confirm this before me sending it back to WD.
In one microsoft forum, I read for same problem

I've recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 7520 SE FHD and following the indications on the drivers download page I upgraded Bios to A9 version. Now I'm having 2 issues, one minor and one that bothers me pretty hard.
1. I can't boot fro USB stick when I try to install WIN 7 again. If I have the bootable usb stick with WIN 7 (created with Microsoft USB DVD Bootable Tool) plugged in the usb port and I press either F12 for boot options or F2 for Setup everything blocks and won't have any other option but to keep the turn on button pressed until the laptop turns off.
I also tried F12/F2 without the USB stick plugged in and I can't find the option to boot from USB neither under F12 menu or Boot menu when pressing F2 for Setup.
2. After doing the BIOS upgrade, the first thing I see, the black page with the Dell Logo seems to be a little broken, meaning the logo is bigger then it used to be and so is the blue line that shows the loading status below it.
My hard drive went bad (CHKDSK fails), so I replaced it. When it boots, I see the Dell starting up screen with F2 and F12 options but then it immediately displays a black screen with the text "Operating System Not Found". I've tried to press F12 with no luck, it always displays "Operating System Not Found". I double checked to ensure the hard drive is not loose and everything looks fine.

I have just purchased a Dell Inspiron 17R Special Edition 7720. It came with a preinstalled Windows 8 (so 64-bit and mandatory UEFI boot). I want to use Linux (more specifically, Archlinux) for work and Windows for games, so dual boot is needed.
I almost completed the Linux installation except for the bootloader: I need to boot Linux from UEFI and didn't manage to do it so far. Here is what I did after I received the PC:
-Disabled Secure Boot; updated BIOS to version A12
-Resized the main Windows partition and created a few partitions for Linux;
-Switched to legacy boot mode and managed to boot a MBR-bootable Arch linux installation USB drive;
-Installed most of the system switched back to UEFI boot mode, Secure Boot off.
At this time I needed to boot the kernel from UEFI for the bootloader installation program to have mandatory access to the EFI environment variables. So I created an UEFI-bootable Archlinux installation USB drive (with a FAT partition) but so far I couldn't manage to successfully boot this drive from UEFI instead of Windows 8.
I think I really tried every single combination, such as:
different USB ports; different boot entries created with F2 boot setup, with different parameters; different orders for the boot entries; hit my boot entries directly within F12 boot menu.
No matter what, in UEFI mode the system always boots the Windows partition.
Also, I could not find any relevant manual or software documentation about the A12 BIOS on the Dell site, did I miss something?
The solution that the user described in this thread to UEFI-boot to a DVD did not work for me with a USB drive.
Dell Inspiron 15Z model 5523 laptop less than 2 years old. Locked up during a Windows update. Refreshed it and lost all my programs. Downloaded Firefox accidentally from a bad site and it was bundled with malware. So I refreshed the laptop again. Had everything working and then later that day it just quit. Locked up and when I rebooted, it said no hard drive could be found. I have a new hard drive, but how do I get my Windows 8 (paid for with the computer) and a boot disk from Dell?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI formatted my XPS M1530 using this guide (How to: Step-by-step guide for installing Windows XP on XPS M1530) and everything worked perfect.
But when I rebooted, I realised that the computer booted directly to XP and didn't let me choose between XP and 7. Normal, I thought, so I stuck in the W7 CD and selected the "repair" option. This did the trick very neatly, repairing the W7 install. The only problem was that now it will boot ONLY to W7 and I still have no selection screen for the OS.
I am trying to dual-boot Windows 7 on my XPS M1530 which is currently running Vista Ultimate - BUT I stumbled upon a problem. As I understand it, Vista will only allow you to have 4 partitions and magically I have 4 already.
I reformatted the laptop right after purchasing and no longer have the recovery drive. Here is what Vista says I have:
(1) EISA Configuration - 47mb
(2) C: (Vista) - 179gb
(3) Primary Partition - 4.25gb
(4) Primary Partition - 3gb
I have an inspiron 9300 with 100 GB HDD. Recently I had a huge malware or even virus that slowed down my computer tremendously.
I took it to geeksquad and they where able to remove it, but it still ran a lot slower than I ever remembered.
I purchased a Dell 7720 (contains 2 1TB HDD's) after speaking to Dell technical support who reassured me that when I install an mSATA drive, it is possible to install the OS on the drive and use it as the primary boot device.
So I received my 7720, plugged in the mSATA drive and cloned the OS partition to the drive. When I restarted the machine, behold... it is not in the list of bootable drives, however it has been recognized as an mSATA drive. After messing around with the BIOS for 30 minutes, I am unable to get it to be a bootable device.
I had to install a new hard drive onto Dell Inspiron 17R (5720, Mid 2012). Ordered new hard drive from Dell, and also Operating System reinstall DVD. Windows was loading, but computer shut down and did not restart. I pressed the power button to restart, but now get 'BOOT MGR is missing' error, and don't know what to do next. I chose 'Custom Installation' and selected the only hard drive that was visible when prompted. Computer will not restart with DVD or without DVD. What now? Windows 7-
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've finally managed to find someone to replace my optical drive with an SSD (wouldn't want to void the warranty, do we?) and I've got quite bit of a problem here. After installing Windows 8 on the SSD, I get the error "winload.exe missing or corrupted" and error code 0xc000000e. The installer automatically put the boot data on the original HDD, while the OS is on the SSD - and it seems the UEFI can't find the OS like this.
The OS itself seems to be intact, since pressing F12 at booting and selecting Hard Drive starts the computer normally.
I've tried to move the boot sector to the SSD, but it seems I'm missing something... Would a BIOS update maybe work with this?

I'd like to try this on my xps 1530 first, but I want to make sure that I don't do something that would crater the Vista OS currently on it. Would I be better off waiting for my 1640 to arrive to play with Windows 7?.
I partitioned my HD and installed Vista on e: drive. Vista worked fine, and I have the option to boot either XP32 or Vista 64. However, both OS can see C: and E:. Therefore when I do an install I have to make sure I don't install anything on C: when running Vista.

I messed the booot manger while deleting xp..so i did a full format of the machine and reinstalled vista...and then i partitioned the hard drive...so i can install XP...
now I instered the XP disc and and restarted my laptop and try booting i from the cd...it starts of fine.. and it gets to a point where it says Windows Will Start Setup or somthing along that line....and then the blue screen of death comes up and i have to restart....
I'm wanting to install XP on my Vista machine so I can play games better on it later on. What do I need to do other than get a copy of XP to make it work? Do I just install them both and then boot whatever one I like when the computer starts up?

View 11 Replies View RelatedMy uncle has a Dell Inspiron 1545 with 3Gb RAM, 160 Gb HD and Windows Vista Home Premium. On boot up there is an error message stating that a back up should be performed immediately as the hard drive has a serious problem.
The good news is that I managed to make a clone of the 160 Gb HD to a 1000 Gb HD (Western Digital Blue) using Paragon software before the original drive failed. The bad news is that the cloning process stopped at 42%, but this 42% included the recovery partition and another part of the HD called Dell Utility.
I installed the cloned WD drive and pressed F8 on boot up, but the advanced boot menu did not appear. Instead I get the error message 'no bootable devices'.
I ran the diagnostics program using F5. All the tests were completed and 'passed'. The BIOS recognizes the new drive as 1000 Gb.
Question: how do I boot the laptop? My uncle does not have any recovery media.
Note- Vista has ability to manage and shrink partitions->Start->right click 'Computer"->manage->Disk Management->click drive (C)->shrink volume
If you have XP or need to partition a space bigger than Vista will allow, follow this walkthrough with MEPIS:
Step One

Burn it to CD/DVD as an ISO image

Step Three..
Boot from the CD drive, put Linux CD in drive and boot. It will run Simply MEPIS from the CD, but it will not install
Step Four..
Sign in as: root, password: root
Step Five..
Click on "Run QTParted"- that will open a box showing your partitions. The main Windows partition is usually /dev/hda1
Step Six..
Right click on your Windows partition, and choose RESIZE
Step Seven...
In the box labeled FREE SIZE AFTER, type the size (in MB) that you want the new partition to be. That will create free space.
Step Eight..
Right click on the free space, click on create
Step Nine..
Select partition type (NTFS or FAT32), click OK
Step Ten..
Click on file(top left), then commit- changes will take effect
Step Eleven..
Click close, then click on the K in the lower left of screen and logout, restart computer
Step Twelve..
remove CD and it will boot to windows, check your partitions. Insert Vista OS to install on new partition
