Dell Inspiron 1520 :: Restored But Hangs During System Boot
Dec 21, 2014
Laptop has not been used regularly for quite a while. The system booted up fine and loaded Windows Vista with no problem. Everything seemed to be in working order. Decided to wipe the system, load productivity applications, and give it to my grandson who is starting college. I depressed the F8 key during start up and entered the recovery routine. I selected the "restore to factory settings" option.
The system indicated it was first formatting the drive and then restoring the system. When I restarted the computer I got to the Dell Boot Screen. Displayed on the screen is the Dell logo, "Inspiron 1520 Series", progress bar, and "BIOS Revision A03". The progress bar fills from left to right and restarts the process in a perpetual loop. When I power the system off the on; the first boot cycle seems to take a lot longer for the progress to fill, but after that it loops with the progress bar filling quickly. The system no longer responds to the F8 key being depressed during start-up.
Consequently, I can not repeat the "Restore to factory settings" process. I have tried to boot the system several times with the same results. When I press F12 during and get "boot options" choosing "Internal Hard Drive" or "Onboard NIC" makes no difference. When I run the diagnostics option from the F12 screen; the system displays the heading: "Pre-boot System Assessment Build 4106" and passes all tests.
It appears to me that the recovery to factory settings routine has in some way damaged the system. It had been working fine before the procedure and hangs during boot afterward. How to get the system back into proper operating condition with the factory settings restored.
When I open System Preferences, then 'Network', I'm trying to add "BLUETOOTH DUN" to this list of available connection choices and the Beach-Ball (coloured spinning progress wheel just sits there and spins forever). (I inadvertently hit the minus button to the Bluetooth connection feature. It's available, it just won't populate in the field). I tried re-installing my Snow Leopard CD and took an hour doing that and it made no difference. I need to get my System Preferences restored.
As a routine maintenance task, I ran chkdsk /r on my Inspiron 1545 last night and it hung at 69% in stage 5 for over 10 hours. I figured it was hung for good, so shut the machine off. When I turned it back on I got the black screen with a "missing operating system". Message.
Worst case, is it as simple to get a factory restore by hitting F8 at bootup like I;ve seen posted on the web? If not, I do have the factory system recovery disks I made, but I really want to save what's on the laptop already.
I just uploaded this video of my problem, you should be able to stream it, if anyone has any problems then let me know. And sorry for the quality, I only have a camera phone to hand, you should be able to see what happens anyway...hopefully

Basically what happens is, I press the power on button of my machine, everything appears to be normal, the power LED turns on, the Hard drive activity LED flickers on and the DVD drive "clicks" (im sure some Dell owners know what I mean by this) BUT then all the lights go out (besides the power) and nothing is shown on my screen, no BIOS loading, nothing.
Does anyone know what might cause this?
I tried yesterday to get it to work but after about 7 hours I just gave up, nothing I did changed anything (I thought the CPU/GPU may of come unattached from the motherboard but after reseating them the problem was still there
i discovered a problem with my refurbished inspiron 1520 that i just bought....when i use battery power, it will not boot into windows..
when i use the ac adapter, it does boot into windows......on battery power, it will get to the screen with the bar going acrosss, just before windows shows up....what is causing this.?
I Have an Inspiron 1520, 2gb ram, 8400M GSI installed a webcam driver and tried to reboot.Num-lock Scroll-Lock Caps-Lock on not flashing. No beeps. No dell logo. After 5 secs, it restarts. I don't have a battery. The power indicator is on. My AC adapter light is also on.What I've tried so far:Removed both 512 ram 1 at a time and still the same results. Tried other ram.Unplugged and plugged back in the CMOS battery. The battery works on another laptop. Removed WLan card.
I want my Inspiron 14z Ultrabook to have two Operating Systems, Fedora (Linux) and Windows 7. Is it possible to use the SSD drive to accelerate the System's performance on both operating system?
Secondly, Can I still restore my machine to Factory settings???
i've successfuly flashed my 4810t to bios 1.10, 1.20 and 1.22.. but yesterday i tried to get to 1.23, it installed ok in windows and restarted... now it wont go past the "press f2 to enter"... i press f2 and nothing... after a few keypresses it starts to make a sound... oh and the leafy button works here...
is there anything i can do? or i must use the warranty?
After rebooting I got an error message that I was missing hal.dll and that windows could not stat. Note: XP has been working great for about 8 months now.
I got this message after trying to boot in safe mode as well.
I put the XP installation disk in and went through the recovery process but no dice. It just loads up the dell logo then goes to a black screen but no more error message. I can hear the hard drive spinning.
Yesterday I noticed that the machine had rebooted itself and was stuck at the green bar. I powered down and turned it on again, and got the "Windows did not start properly" screen.
I chose Safe Mode, but partway through the boot, it restarted again and went back to the same screen.
No matter what I choose I can't get Windows to boot.
So I then put the DVD in the machine and it would not boot from there. It went straight to booting from the hard drive with the same result.
I changed the boot sequence in the BIOS so that the DVD was first, and it still would not read from the DVD.
Giving up in disgust, I tried again several hours later. This time it would read off the DVD so I thought I was on the road to recovery.
But it still doesn't boot. Most of the time I am getting to a black screen with a large white cursor on it, and go no further.
One time, and one time only, I got as far as the menu you get when you start with the DVD, I chose repair my computer, and then it proceeded to sit there and do absolutely nothing again. [Note also - it took a very long time to go from the black screen to the Vista screen - way longer than normal]
So I now suspect a hardware failure. Hard Drive? RAM? I can on occasion see the hard drive light flashing for extended periods of time.
My HP Pavillion Notebook 17-e110dx has stopped working for no discernible reason. When I turn it on it says F1 system information and automatically goes to the F1 screen where it displays the sys info. It says press ESC to exit but that does nothing. In fact, no keys do anything. I tried to get to other screens when booting but it won't let me do anything. The laptop is only a few months old and I still have the basic 1-year warranty. Who should I contact to have HP repair it?
My daughter's Acer is 2.5 years old and it's running Windows 7. She recently rebooted it last week for a Windows Update and since then it starts up but hangs, with the hard drive light blinking slowly. I ran it in Safe Mode and it gets through CLASSPNP.SYS then hangs. According to articles this is usually a hardware problem. The only option I have with this OS is to bring up the Command Prompt. I've tried System File Checker - no go. System Repair comes back with unknown error and what looks like a bad Driver.
I was able to build a new partition (100+GB) and do a clean install of Windows 7 x64 Ultimate w/ SP1. This went through fine, though I would have to load the Acer drivers for the network card, etc. to finalize it. The point here is that this shows that the hard drive isn't the issue.
My fear is that Windows installed either some sort of driver or other update that has now caused the current OS on her laptop to be unusable. I went to do a System Restore and the only restore point it had was the Critical Update that she rebooted to on 2/13. Trying to roll back to that Restore Point didn't work.
I have dell isnpiron 5110 and currently I have installed a new copy of windows 8, windows 8 is working fine but when I plu gin the charger, laptop hangs, no mouse movement, every thing freezes, ctl+alt+del does not work, then only option to shut down the computer forcefully

I purchased an inspiron 15r 5520 a few months ago. I ran assassins creed 3 on it and have run into some problems.
Now I read a lot about this problem on other forums. Whenever I run the game it crashes after some time and hangs up my computer too. Many think its because the dedicated graphic card (Radeon 7760M).
I have had my Inspiron 7347 for a few days. When operating on the battery, the touchpad exhibits some quirks that make this P:C extremely hard to use as a portable laptop.
The mouse on the touchpad hangs up intermittently, sometimes for several seconds. This erratic behavior makes using the mouse terribly difficult.
When scrolling using the mouse on a vertical scroll bar, the right click menu for the desktop keeps popping up. I must move the mouse away from the scroll bar, left click to get rid of the right click menu, and return the mouse to the scroll bar. Sometimes this behavior is constant when scrolling through a long page, making it impossible to use the mouse to scroll.
I have a problem in my inspiron mini 1012,it Hangs and wont pass BIOS loading.. i have tried to press f2 it can but it takes long time to pass and went in bios menu after any minutes its hangs again..and i tey to press f12 to use another boot option, but it can not pass...
I'm trying to upgrade the operating system on my laptop. Preinstalled Windows 7 x64 Home Basic, and I update to Windows 8 x64 Professional. At the end of the installation process hangs and all I see on the screen - this is the logo in the center of the screen, a few words at the bottom and five frozen in one position points that previously ran in a circle.
I repeated the installation several times, but all of these attempts have ended the same way.
Have any of you have a similar situation and how you solved it?
I have an HP pavilion dv5000, running XP. I recently had to use the recovery partition to restore it to factory condition, but now there is no wireless. I checked in the Device Manager and it's as if it never existed, I can only use it hooked up to my router by cable...
So I'm trying to upgrade my ram, right now I have 2Gb that the system sees, however when I crack open the back all I see is 1 slot that has 1 chip in it which is a 1GB chip...
Recently my fan has been making a lot of noise whenever it starts up.
Sometimes it sounds like it's getting caught on something as it spins and it trips for a few seconds. Other times it makes a high pitched, not particularly loud but noticeable, noise,
or it'll sound like it's blowing out a lot of air, usually more then it really is. It's also made a sort clicking sound before, similar to the noises a processor on a normal computer might make when loading or booting or something, but I know it's for sure coming from the fan
First of all I wanna say that I'm a new member on this site. I've checked it out a few times and it seems that people get good help and tips so I decided to register too.
Anyway I bought an inspiron 1520 right about 2 years ago. It's my first laptop and I havent had any troubles with it whatsoever and it's been surving me great.
However 2 years of wear and tear have taken its toll on the outside plastic cover of the computer. One of the corners is cracked (the one to the right of the volume and play/pause buttons) the metal part is a bit bent but it's nothing serious .......
A month after getting my new toshiba (insignature) and letting my sister being to use my old laptop because her 9 year old system decided to fail at life.. the computer decides to fail completely.
I have no idea what the issue is... The laptop will turn on, and turn on I mean the power light will come on for a second or two.. and then the light with go back out and the computer is completely off
