I upgraded to windows 8 from Windows Vista Home Basic. My problem is that on the windows action centre, I get the report that my antivirus and firewall are off and I can't switch them on. I am using Norton 360. Is there a way to solve this? In my Norton, the are both ON. How can I solve these issues, I'm not feeling safe when I go online.

I updated security essentials and windows and then it stopped working after updates had installed. I tried system restore and it still does not work. View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter connecting to the internet on my laptop(Dell inspiron 1525, Windows Vista), the internet connection will work great for 5 minutes or less than it slows down drastically or essentially not working at all. If I disconnect and reconnect it will work again but just for a short amount of time. The wireless connection works great on other laptops, tablets and mobile. I have Mcafee antivirus, and it could not detect any malware or viruses. Tried restoring the computer to factory settings and the internet stays connected for what seem a few minutes longer.

I have an Acer Aspire 5610. every time I switch the laptop on a warning bubble appears warning me that my firewall is not turned on. I go to my control panel and the firewall icon there but when I open the firewall settings it is on. Do I need to download a new version or something?? Not seen this before.
A guy also attempted to fix my laptop when it broke last year and since then the acer orbican webcam hasn't worked. the message says to check connection and that it isnt being used by another user. Do I need to download a new driver?
some solid firewall settings for a MAC? Would be using the native firewall.
Also, what is the best anti-virus (freeware) to use? I'm not looking for debate on how an Apple OS doesn't need it. Just what is the best and most widely used freeware. not familiar with MACs.

i ordered webroot because of the recommendations but i'm not so sure if it'll run smoothly with the E6400
i'll never go back to mcafee, slows my system down like no other.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a HP Pavilion dv7 notebook with Windows 7 64-bit. Last week after I was attacked by some virus that's called Win 7 I installed a virus removal program Super Anti Spyware Free Edition. The problem went away but so did my ability to access the Firewall. I tried a few different options from the Microsoft site like trying to find it on the services menu, it wasn't there. I tried saving a repair sequence in Notepad then running as administrator from the desktop that didn't work either. Every time I try to reset the firewall an error code pops up. Error code- 0x80070424
Now I have to keep jumping around from different user accounts on the computer because the same malware/virus keeps trying to pop up. It keeps trying to make me buy the full version even though it appears to be nothing wrong with the computer according to other programs. i googled it and it's a scam to get you to pay for something you don't need.

After googling. I found that It meant a hard disc failure.

my Acer travelmate 5720 (same laptop that had problems last time) running Windows Vista Home Premium has recently been having some problems.
I.e:
-Any of the Acer Empowering Technology Applications crash uncontrollably
-I can't find any networks, and it's not my router I checked.
-My windows firewall won't turn on which is strange.
-There might be other problems but I haven't found any others yet
I have run a "Deep" virus scan and found nothing.
if anyone can recommend a firewall application that controls both the incoming and the outgoing traffic. The built in firewall protects from incoming request, but I'd like to control the outgoing connections as well. I did a search and found 1 thread, but it's more than a year old.
Little Snitch and WaterRoof (and its simpler version NoobProof) seem to fit the bill. Any recommendation besides these?

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy cousin has an Inspiron 1525 laptop which has had an issue of booting. Randomly one day she received the following message, "Internal hard drive not found. Reseat hard drive". It also said from below "Boot to CD by pressing any key" that the "BOOTMGR is not found".
I received the laptop in this state. I booted from the CD (Windows install disc) and was able to reinstall Vista. I then updated all the drivers and had everything working like a charm. I thought I had hit jackpot with an easy reformat. After about 4 hours of having it running perfectly, as I was installing Windows updates, I received the "Internal hard drive not found. Reseat hard drive" message. Now I cannot boot into Windows and booting from the CD no longer works.
Here are some of the specs:
T2390 Dual Core 1.86Ghz
2GB RAM
160GB SATA HDD
Is the hard drive dying? Is it the SATA controller? The motherboard? Anyone have any ideas or past experiences?
I have a Dell Inspiron 1525. It has a Intel Celeron 540 1.86Ghz CPU. I would like to upgrade the cpu in it. I would like at least a Core 2 Duo. What processor will work well and fit in this laptop.
