Dell Inspiron 6400 :: Unable To Boot From CD / USB?
Jun 16, 2012I need to reinstall xp on my Dell Inspiron 6400. I don't have any recovery disc or what so ever, only windows xp disc.
The weird thing is that the laptop won't boot from anything but the HD. To format the drive i had it connected externaly to other computer then formatted it from there. I tried using boot selector menu (F12) and selecting cd-rom - nothing happanes.
Also tried booting from bootable usb drive with xp installation on it - nothing happens. Also tried changing boot sequence in BIOS - no affect.
I thought my disc maybe is bad - but i checked in other laptop and it boots great,both from my disc and from my usb flash drive. How to make it boot? Tried resetting the bios to its default.
Also, I thought maybe its sata drivers issues which needs to be slipstreamed onto the windows xp installation - but i hardly think that's it, cause this laptop doesn't even have an option for AHCI mode.

Dec 15, 2014I inadvertently upgraded to Windows 8.1 which I had been trying to avoid doing and don't know how it happened as I had continually knocked back prompts to upgrade. I originally did upgrade to 8.1 last year and had such major graphics issues I eventually restored factory settings to get back to Windows 8 which solved all the issues. Now the same problems are happening i.e. breaking up of the screen with loads of horizontal lines running across it.
I downloaded all the updated drivers I could from the Dell site but the graphics driver and video driver would not work and I kept getting the message that the laptop was not compatible with the downloads. It is a Dell Inspiron 3520 and the recommended drivers just will not install. I don't want to have to go through all the hassle of restoring factory settings again. I am sure the problem is with these 2 drivers mainly the NDJN4 video driver.

Nov 7, 2009I use this HP pavilion dv2000 laptop for more than 2year but I don't have recovery cd and I never thought to write. But recently my laptop affect with virus which is not allowing to login into window xp, as soon as I login it get logs of immediately and i decided to reinstall xp,So while booting the computer I pressed to F11 to load HP recovery option and it loads but after few point no display on the screen. So, I don't know what to do. If I get some recovery CD/software so that I can download and write in it and load in my affected computer.Or Can you please suggest how do I load windowsxp freshly in my laptop. I don't have any important data's in my laptop, so I can even do format HDD is necessary.

windows xp home.
On start up as soon as you first press the power button, there is no display no life at all on the laptop's screen. No POST screen or Windows loading screen. Now after windows have loaded the display appears back on the laptop.
If i hooked up an external monitor and do a cold start i can see everything working the way it should on the external monitor and then as the windows have finished loaded the
image switches back to the laptop screen.
It seems like the bios is using the vga out as the primary video until widows drivers have take over and switch back to the laptops screen. The same happens when the external monitor is hooked up and when it isn't.
There is no option in the bios to change the default screen.
I tried everything i could think of.
FN+F5 key dose nothing until windows have loaded
CTRL + ALT + F1 or F3 (alternative keys for changing the display)
Did a full system recovery(format and reinstalled windows)
Flashed and updated the Bios, From 1.25 to 1.27
removed and reinstalled ram, battery, to draining complete power from the laptop.
2 display drivers show up. I tried removing and disabling them one at a time.
Still no change.
No power, no lights, no display, no nothing on the laptops screen until windows have loaded. After windows have loaded everything works perfect, except when resuming from hibernation, the screen that says resuming from hibernation do not display because the bios is using the vga out as the mains.
After a few seconds the screen lights up and continues to resume as it should.
The netbook has not been dropped one or had any damage what so ever.

May 31, 2012I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 and have had this laptop for 3 or more years. Last night I shut off my laptop normally but today, upon booting, the screen just turns black and nothing else.When starting up, the Dell logo still loads and the screen still shows "safe mode or start up regularly."
Upon choosing either option, the screen loads for awhile then fades into black. Nothing else happens after.I would atleast like to know how to save my files within the laptop. [Atleast to start it up once more to save all the files to a USB and not lose them forever..]

Jan 31, 2013I own an Inspiron N4010 14R dell laptop. When I restarted my laptop yesterday, i couldn't boot into windows and windows logo was rotating forever. So I thought OS was curropted and tried to reinstall OS. But it also didn't work. I couldn't able to install OS. But I could able to delete a partition and refresh it.
Then I ran a diagnosis on my computer and it showed an error code 2000-0146. (saying HDD needs to be replaced)
I called Dell support center and asked them about the issue. They said my hdd nedds to be replaced. So I bought a new 2.5" SATA seagate hard drive and installed it in the system.
But even after that, the same problem exists. But this time Diagnostic doesn't show any error. My warranty period is void.
Acer :: Aspire 9500 Powers Off (possibly Overheats) Before Windows Loads
Mar 28, 2009Acer Aspire 9504.
First of all it runs in Windows completely rock solid. I have ran stress utilities for over 24 hours, and the system is completely stable.
My problem is that it is very unstable before windows loads. For example, if I simply leave it in the BIOS setup for 5 minutes the computer will just power off. It is also quite hot underneath. This occurs also if I boot from DOS (or other e.g. XP recovery disk) boot disk to run some utilities - the system will run for 5 minutes or so, and then just power off. The time that I get before it powers off decreases if I immediately switch it on again, suggesting an overheating issue. I did not have this problem when I first got the laptop 3 years ago.
This problem is really annoying as I want to run some low-level utilities to repartition my hard disk and also possibly reinstall windows, but this problem is preventing that.
Any ideas? Perhaps some strange software that I installed? ACPI config? Memory issue? BIOS issue? Computer is hot in several areas under where the CPU / TV tuner / graphics / memory are located .
My system spec:
- Pentium M 760 2GHz
- Ati X700 256MB graphics
- 2GB crucial RAM (2 x 1 GB DDR2 533 CL4) (upgraded from 1GB over a year ago and fully tested to be working)
- Newest BIOS from Acer installed

And if I press power button, its turning off. Later I've pressed F8 key to login in Wiindows Normal Mode, its opening Windows. So every time i've to press F8 key to login. Sometimes the beep sound continues and not logging in normal mode or in Safe mode.
I thought it might be RAM issue and I checked 'System Settings' in Control Panel, it shows the usable RAM is 2.77GB of 8GB.
I went to Dell laptop service center near by my location and they said its keyboard problem, they charging too much amount to replace keyboard. but my keyboard is working properly.

Apr 22, 2014I have a training environment using W530 laptops that are enclosed in an area in front of the desks. It is not pratical to get to the computer as it is hidden away and therefore I need to be able to use the dvi cabled external monitor for bios setup, boot order, etc.
Right now the boot options are hidden from the external monitor until windows loads. Then the external monitor becomes active. Any way to bypass the laptop monitor altogether?

I am looking at the new Inspiron 15, which has a 15.6" display.
Can anyone tell me whether the actual laptop itself is bigger or smaller than my current 6400? I am interested in knowing width.
I see a lot of dead space on my 6400, and hopefully Dell realized this, and instead of making another 15.4" with dead space, they made use of this and gave a better display!

Current RAM is dual channel interleaved 1024MB total DDR2 SDRAM CAS 5-5-5-15 while in use is 667MHz (memtest+).
Memtest+ reports my FSB to be 166MHz.
I'm looking to get 2GB total memory, I currently have 1GB.
