Dell Inspiron 7720SE :: Noisy Fan And Disk Processing
Apr 6, 2013
I got this 7720SE from woot 3 days ago and after i played metro2033 on day 2 problem came up.. before that the laptop was really quiet even though steaming its like silent mode . and you wont hear anything .
right now you can hear the fan sound even though i am not doing anything and when i try to open up some folders or software like Steam the scratchy sound ( not loud but annoying) Â came out ( the ones you hear from old computers.
i tried online support but they keep saying i have to call customer care because theres a "pending issue" with my account ...
I have a new 5721 running ubuntu 12.04 and the fan runs full speed constantly from seconds after loging in. I am using s fraction of the CPUs' power and still the fan runs full belt and is pretty noisy. I have read that Dell computers are certified to run ubuntu, but this seems to be a problem with no solution after hours of searching the web for an answer.
I've tried to collect all the info I can. Please add as you seem fit.
Recently returned a dell 1745 due to bad fan control. While idling the fan would rew up to max each 3-5 minutes easily detectable by speedfan (see the last link). The core temperatures would slowly ("") increase to around 38 degrees when the fan starts at horrendous pace for ~10-15 seconds and cool the cores to sub-30 degrees and the whole show starts again. This is a showstopper and noone should really by these products.
It is as though the cpu fan only has two paces. Silent and Noisy. There shoudl of course be some kind of gradient in the fan speeds at different temepratures but his has not been implemented though very easy for BIOS coders to do so. The fan vigorously tries to cool the cpu to 30 degrees each time it hits ~40 degress - we're talking intel cpus that could easily go to 60-70 degrees without fuzz.
While idling any laptop should keep a constant temperature - the current lineup of inspirons and studios (at least 1564, 1745, 1747 an 1749) cannot achieve this and unleashes fan hell very often.
Untill fixed (which dell seems very reluctant to) don't buy dell. It's simply not worth it.
This have nothing to do with throtteling. And don't even get me started on doing something "cpu intensive" like browing.
2 days ago I was given a new work laptop - the E7440 (its brand new).
Straight away I noticed some loud buzzing noises which a fellow colleague said was the fan. It's quite annoying. I soon noticed however when my laptop was idle these noises would stop, and when I clicked they would start again. Whenever I ask the Laptop to do anything these noises start up, and considering im active on the machine all day.
There are high pitched, buzzing noises. And as mentioned are aligned to when the laptop is processing something. They also make sounds when I scroll the mouse for example.
I recently ordered a Vaio FW-490 CTO with an estimated ship date of 9/16, but the order has been processing since the day I ordered it. Also, today I recieved an email:
"We regret to inform you that all or part of your Sony Style order SW********* has been delayed.
In order to serve you better in the future, our warehouse system was shutdown tonight. Regrettably, we encountered problems with your order that prevented your order from being fulfilled in time for the shutdown. Unfortunately, we will be unable to ship your order until 9/18/2009."
Is it normal for it to be in processing this long, or should I call them to see the the "problems with my order" are?
It worked fine for a year but starting the second year, the sound card started to fail, and by that I mean that the sound sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't, but I solved this problem by buying an external sound card.
Two months ago I accidentally hit the laptop in the wall and after that incident the Graphics card can't process anything that requires high or medium graphics for example:
-When I play 720p videos the video runs very slow, it should be noted that I used to play 720p withouth any problem before the accident.
-The Windows Experience Index for Graphics went from 3.4 to 2.0 after the accident.
-Games that used to run at 30-40 FPS, now run at 2 - 3 FPS max.
- Windows AERO runs very slow now, so I if I want to use windows I have to run Windows Classic theme.
Things I've done:
1) Format my PC and tried different OSs XP, 7. 2) Flash the BIOS. 3) Change the Hard Drive with another one. 4) Change the RAM. None of these things worked.
Does anyone know what might be causing this problem?
I don't know what happened, but my laptop's not working.
I was using my laptop as a desktop computer (no battery) when I accidentally switched the switch off. After switching it on, I tried to turn on my laptop and the first thing I noticed was the blank screen. Then the power turned off, and then turned on again. The fan is working, but nothing else is. I don't hear or notice any processing, so I'm pretty sure nothing's working right except for the fan and the lights indicating that it's on.
I tried to reset the laptop by disconnecting it from power and then turning it back on after 30 seconds - but no luck.
I did a search and read various thread on the older Sony Vaio Z battery life. However, these are all in the year 2008 and pre Windows 7.
Vaio Z battery life tests
Vaio Z reviewers getting 9hr battery life!
I do a fair bit of transatlantic flights. So I'd like to know what battery life I can get with the Sony Z890, Windows 7, with all processes such as WIFI, Bluetooth etc turned off and being used in word processing and reading mode using the integrated graphics, with brightness at 50%. SLOW is fine as word processing is easy.
Anyone has a sense of the battery life I should get?
What if I turn on WIFI and use it as a netbook for surfing at airports?
I can't seem to find a recent discussion on battery life. The 2008 threads has a huge disparity with some people claiming something like 9 hours doing basic stuff! Hard to believe but thought I'd check with you guys.
I bought four Dell Inspiron 15 this black Friday from the Microsoft Store. All four of those have the exact same problem of 100% disk usage at the start up right out of the box. I don't want to return as I am a lifelong dell user. But If there is no solution of this problem then why the <profanity> dell sold these laptops?
Here is what I have done to try and fix this problem: Used windows repair tools to check all hardware. All hardware came back okay/// Ran chkdsk /f on the drive //// Disabled windows indexing //// Turned power management to Maximum performance //// Downloaded and used the Dell tools to update all drivers //// Checked programs and removed all unnecessary programs //// Used MSCONFIG to remove certain programs from the startup and from running in the background //// Tried Microsoft Fix It to improve performance //// Nothing works.
I am planning to buy New Dell Inspiron 15 series 7000. I would want to replace the harddisk with SSD by next year or so. But i wanted to know if i can have SSD along with hard disk in this laptop.
I wanted both good performance along with large storage. So i was wondering if i can have two disks at once.
On my xps the fan i running nearly all the time...is this normal. It runs all the time if i turn on the laptop and do nothing on it. Sometimes it stops for 2-4 min. It is quit noisy...... Are you guys xps' doing the same thing???
Just got my Dell Windows 8 laptop and looking at disk management I can see 4 partitions in there in addition to the one containing the OS. See image below.
I just bought a latitude E6500 (intel 8600 - 2.4 GH, 3GB RAM, Samsung HDD 200 GB 7200; Vista Business) from an ebay resaler here in UK. From a one day experience I can tell that is is a beautifull machine but it is VERY NOSY all the time no matter what i do - it is like this from the time it gets turned on and stays noisy the whole time. When I put it next to my old Latitude D520 it is almost like a desktop noise. I am not sure if it is only the fan because there's no air flow coming from the radiators neither from the side one nor the vent on the bottom. I thought that there can be somehow that the fan is not working but it turned and blew very hot air for a vew seconds when i updated the BIOS. The noise is mixed with some high friquensy noises coming from where the wents and the proc is. I am confused if it is a hardware issue or it can be fixed somehow ... It comes with a 3 years warranty but i wonder if i should use the 7 day return policy and return it to the seller; which will be pityy because the machine is really beautiful..
Is there any way the DVD drive noise can be reduced? When I put in some DVD/Cds it is so loud I can't even here the sound coming out of the computer. And the all laptop vibrate , I am almost afraid it will damage the drive altogether.
The thiing is, it does not do it for all dvd/ cds. but when it does, it is pratically useless using them. And when I am in a public place it is outright embarassing!
I've been frustrated all week dealing with a new HP dv7t that arrived on Monday (9/15). The moment I powered it up, the fan started running at full speed and hours it hadn't kicked off a single time. I've never heard a notebook fan more audible or more annoying before. It would be impossible to use the system in a library or other quiet setting without distracting others. Even with fan running at gale force, the wrist rest to the left of the touchpad was always uncomfortably HOT! I did figure out how to change the BIOS setting that had the fan set to 'Always On'. But it still ran 90% of the time!
I called this morning and got my Return Authorization, so it's going back on Monday and I refused to trade it for another HP....the fan in a store model I checked out yesterday was just as loud as mine....so that puts me back to square one- looking for a new laptop!
I've decided that I'd rather have a 15.4" model than a 17", so the Dell Studio 15 is high on my list. I also love the XPS M1530, but both of the nVIDIA graphics cards offered are included in the current nVIDIA mess that's been all over the news....
So, the Dell Studio 15 with the ATI Radeon HD 3450 graphics card and either the 2.1GHz T8100 or 2.5GHz T9300 is my front-runner at the moment. But I've got a few questions for those of you with some hands on experience and knowledge of the Studio models-
What percentage of the time does the fan run during normal usage (email, spreadsheets, internet)?
Is the fan noise muted like most other notebooks? Or is it more audible?
Are there any areas of the keyboard, wrist rest or touchpad that become uncomfortably warm to the touch?
I just bought an ultrabook dell inspiron 14z with msata 32 GO cache + 500 GO hard drive. But I would change my mSata 32 go cache by another mSata 60 GO. I would like this disk doesn't work in cache but like a real SSD with Windows on it.
How can i disassembly the laptop ? I'm stuck with a part near USB port on the left.
I have had this computer for about 6 years- all through college. I've had an issue where my disk cleanup doesn't work for a while, but it has just become serious enough to worry about. My disks are full! How do I clean them up. That's the first of the problems we'll work on.
Is it possible to put an additional hard disk in an inspiron 15R - 5521? I would like to put a SSD in it, but would like to keep the 1TB disk that is currently in it.
I recently bought a new Inspiron 15R 5521 preinstalled with Windows 8and I have never powered it on because I want to make an entire disk backupas it is in a "pure" state.
I removed its harddrive (Western Digital, 1 TB) from my laptop to connectit to my desktop with 2 harddrives (one for system (Windows 7, 64 bit); the otherfor data (2 TB)), but never started the installed system to prevent the systemfrom writing some system information into the Inspiron disk.Instead I inserted a Windows PE CD embedded with Acronis True Image 2013.I chose "Disk Backup". The Inspiron harddrive had 6 partitions. The destination drive (where the image created was to be saved) was the 2-TB data disk.Clicked "Finish" and writing Partition 1...done, 2...ok, .... 6 ok and"Backup Process Failed!" at the final stage.
The final stage seems to be a partition layout.BTW the Acronis backup system has an option "Ignore Errors" (force complete).I gave it a try too, but the image created was incomplete with only 4 partitions.Macrium Rescue Disk is a similar one but with no ignore error option.I also tried this and failed at the final stage. No image created. The error message was "Unable to read from disk".Both the Inspiron disk and the destination drive happened to be Western Digital ones.I tried Western Digital Lifeguard checker on each and found no bad sectors.
I have diagnose my system with dell system detect and with window diagnose tool and find that there are some bad sectors in my hard disk, how can i recover them and also some of my friend remove my window 7 Â home edition and install window 7 ultimate edition in my laptop Inspiron N5010Â so can I again remove and reinstall the home edition in my laptop and how to remove bad sectors cause i can't afford new hard drive right now ....
One day I came home and opened my laptop to see a black screen with a blue bar and white font saying Harddisk Security SAT Port 0 Hitachi HTS723232A7ALock. I don't know what to do, nobody put a password on it, and the manual doesn't give a password.
I currently have a Dell Inspiron 1720 with a second hard disk I bought and fitted myself. If I get a Studio 17, will I be able to fit this hard disk into the second bay in there? As far as I'm aware the disk itself should be okay, but the caddy might be slightly different for that model - is that right? If so I'll just buy a new caddy or modify this one - otherwise I'll be £100 down for this hard disk!
